Tae was grounded.

Sort of.

Not really, but...

The mandible-marked filly looked over her shoulder, half expecting to see Kygo flitting around. She wouldn't put it past Ampere to send the loud bird to follow her, and given the amount of 'trouble' that she and Grusha had been in lately, being tailed wouldn't be out of the question.

The only thing was ... Tae didn't agree. Of course there are times in every child's life when they are punished. But in most instances that at least knew what rules they were breaking before they broke them, so that when they were caught, the punishment at least seemed fitting. But lately for Tae, she found herself in trouble for things that she thought might be considered honourable. Saved a wolf-pups life? NOPE. Companion bonding is always bad. Tried to save my big brother from a half-crazy demi-God? NOPE. Should have stayed put and let the adults handle it.

So no, the girl wasn't grounded, but she was trying to fly under the radar. At least for a little while, so that she could go back to exploring. The last thing that she wanted to do was have Ampere or Zero or Gaucho find her and Grusha's stash of bones, simply because they were keeping an eye on her.

Oh they could watch all right. Watch her play in the sand, splash in the waves, and do a ton of other harmless boring things. Maybe then they would lighten up. Part of the small filly understood - she agreed with Ampere when she said that she had a lot to learn about the world. Tae wasn't one to ignore her own ignorance, but at the same time ... She knew she had big hoof-prints to fill. But she wasn't going to fill them the way that they already were. She needed to be her own mare first ... needed to make mistakes and just be a kid, at least for now.

She felt that she was simultaneously being told to smarten up and grow up, and to also just relax and be a child.

Caught in the middle, Tae (and Grusha) had been nothing but trouble.

Tae was currently kicking sand into the water. It amazed her that regardless of how much sand she kicked, the sand on the beach always appeared to be the same, and so did the water. Neither seemed any more full, or less full, for all of her efforts. A Frostfall chill was in the air, but the girl ignored it. It was relatively early in the season, and the Throat was still warm enough that the chill was not intolerable. At her side, Mal, the black wolf pup watched with rapt attention as the sand disappeared into the water. Earlier he had tried to catch the granules without much success, and having learned his lesson, now merely sat and watched Tae tirelessly continue to try and destroy the beach.

It doesn't matter, doesn't matter if I scare you
I only wanted, only wanted someone else's skin

Being grounded sucked.
Being in trouble sucked.
Not being understood sucked.
Being told what to do sucked.
Not being listened to sucked.
Being told that you can't do something because you're young sucked.

There were a plethora of other things that Grusha thought sucked, but none of them came close to Ma. She sucked the most with her yelling and her shouting, her not understanding, and her telling them they couldn't do shit because they were foals, and her threats. It certainly didn't make Grusha want to spend any more time than necessary around her. She would suckle and have her meals and then she'd wander away and keep her distance because she was mad. There was a whole big ol' world out there and she couldn't go see it because Ma grounded them for saving wolf pups and accidentally bonding to them. Oh, and she thought Pop sucked, too, for just agreeing with Ma and not standing up for his daughters.

Whatever.

When Grusha and Tae grew up little bit and showed their parents how strong they really were it would shut them up real fast. They'd wonder why they ever doubted the twins.

Oh, but she knew that she was being watched. That was part of being grounded, wasn't it? Ma and Pop and big brother and their companions watched you and made sure you didn't do anything that would cause trouble. That was yet another thing that sucked. She couldn't hunt or play with the bones she had collected because Ma might find them. If she was so upset about her children being bonded how would she feel about her daughters killing small animals and collecting their bones?

She'd lay another egg, for sure.

So Grusha had to spend her time wandering around with Nashoba, engaging in games of chase when she was bored enough. Sometimes she stood and stared across the ocean at the land on the other side and pouted because she wanted to be out there instead of locked inside the Throat. Other times she would lay in the sand and soak up the sun or roll and get her hair more and more tangled. More often than not, however, she would seek out her twin just for company. That was the case now. She saw Tae standing on the beach kicking sand into the water and so she wandered over and watched because there was nothing else to do when you were grounded.

To say that Tae just knew when Grusha approached, would have been a stretch. It wasn't as though there was some weird 6th-sense thing between them. But nor did it feel like this with anyone else. It was like her ears and nose and body was always on alert for her twin, but instead of hearing, or seeing, or feeling her, her senses just sort of ... knew her. So in a sense, it was true to say that she just knew when Grusha approached, but only in the same way that once you were distracted, you stopped noticing that you were breathing. It was there, available to be heard, but you sort of ... stopped hearing it, even though you knew it was happening.

Anyways.

Tae hardly moved as her larger twin approached. She didn't need to say hello, such trivialities didn't exist between the girls. Nor did Tae need to see the look on Grusha's face to know that she was equally as annoyed with their current state of affairs.

"I hope there are no monsters in this area. Whatever would we do without an adult to protect us." Tae remarked dryly as she kicked another burst of sand into the water. Raising, Mal lunged towards Nashoba, trying to bite the scruff of his neck and pull him to the ground. It was all in good fun of course, but then again, without leaving the Throat there wasn't much to hunt and the wolf pup was growing bored, just as the twins were.

“Go. Find your brother and play.” Her mother had encouraged, though Asavvi would have much rather stayed at her side. The girl liked following her mother throughout the day, watching the Sunspear see to her duties and helping where she could. Perhaps her mother had grown tired of having a little shadow, or at least that was a thought that crossed Asavvi’s mind no matter how untrue it actually was. Though Megaera had only meant to encourage fun in the the filly, Asavvi had taken it as rebuke and so was feeling increasingly sulky as the day moved on.

Nizho was nowhere to be found and Asavvi suspected that he and Mordecai had gone off on some adventure without her. Again. The little stargazer tried not to let it hurt her, she did like to be home after all—home was familiar and quiet and safe—but the unmatched misery of being the odd-one-out was a demon she could not yet vanquish. Nizho loved her, she knew at least that her twin didn’t do it on purpose, but for some reason the girl could not fathom her older sister hated her. It must have been something she had done, but for all her wondering the dark little girl could not think what it could have been.

She moved sedately along the beach, feeling entirely out of place where she should have been right at home. Once in a while she would try and distract herself but chasing a wave or watching one of the sea birds but each little diversion would last only so long and then the burst of energy would dissipate. She’d sigh (Asavvi did far too much sighing for one her age) and move along down the beach.

Storm-eyes found the bodies that roamed the beach ahead, the Sultan’s daughters that she had met so briefly before but at their heels tussled a pair of wolf pups. The Sultana’s daughter hesitated, watching the foursome in their various pursuits (sand-kicking, wrestling, watching) before kicking into a trot.  “Hello, do you mind if I join you?” She mad a valiant effort at brightening her voice despite how glum she’d been feeling; perhaps she’d be able to make friends, they weren’t so far off in age after all. She stopped when she reached them, smiling at the pair of dun girls before glancing at the pups. “Are these your companions?”

The birds knew what was happening below.

In frenetic circles they lingered above part of the coastline, screeching and screaming with impatient calls and wails. Soon there would be food for them to eat - they could hear the cries coming from beneath the waves, inside of the eggs. Soon, they would be fed. Soon, they would no longer be hungry.

Beneath the waves however, something else wanted those eggs. Long limbs slipped from the surface of the waters, trying to grab towards where there or four of them were nestled tightly behind a ring of stones. Water poured in and out of the rocky circle, but it wasn't enough to get the eggs passed the stony barrier. And, from where the creature was on the bottom of the sea-bed, its arms were not long enough to grab the eggs out. It would have to surface and risk exposure, or perhaps find a way to increase the strength of the waves so that the pull would be enough to raise the eggs above the height of the rocks.

"I hope there are no monsters in this area. Whatever would we do without an adult to protect us."

Grusha snorted bitterly in reponse to Tae's remark, but she couldn't help but agree. "What can a pair of weak foalth do in the fath of danger?" She bit out. Nashoba, picking up on his bonded's irritation, growled and bared his small teeth at the ocean. The pup's growl was cut short by Mal lunging for him and grabbing him by the scruff. The pup yipped and bit at Mal's leg as the other pup tried to wrestle him to the ground.

At least they were having fun.

They hadn't been standing there together for long when someone else showed up. Grusha recognized her from a meeting not too long ago when their fathers had spoken. She had a twin, too, if Grusha remembered correctly. A puny little boy-twin. A prince and a princess because their mother was Sultana.

"Whatever." The bigger girl finally grunted with a roll of her blue eyes. "I don't care." It wasn't like she could tell the princess to take a hike, especially since they were in the Throat, grounded, and likely being watched by parents. "Do whatever you want printheth."

"Are those your companions?"

Grusha looked down at the two wolves as they continued to wrestle and kick up sand. Nashoba growled and grunted and howled as he wrestled with his brother, completely oblivious to the new girl. "No, we're juth babythitting." Grusha finally answered, because she felt it was a stupid question. Like wolf pups would just pal around with a couple of foals without their parents anywhere in sight.

Honestly.

Maybe if she wasn't so mad about being grounded she'd have the strength to be nicer to the Sultana's daughter. She'd just blame her rudeness on Ma and Pop and be done with it.
