WE ARE THE BEAUTIFUL MISTAKE

So much had happened since her birth that it felt like ages had passed. Perhaps that's why she feels older than just a year and a half. Perhaps that's why, then, she tends to wander without first seeking her mother's permission. It isn't out of heartlessness or some sort of selfish need to cause mother anxiety or sorrow or pain but that's how it seems to her mother, isn't it? In just a year she'd taken refuge on the Earth God's ship, dealt with the aftermath of an invasion that split up her fragile family, attempted to find new members for the Edge while making friends (and simultaneously causing a rift between herself and her mother), and even helped to fell two foreign 'gods'. And she has the scars to prove it. The hair still hasn't grown back over the scars on her back legs - it would, eventually, but the hot tar from the strange tiger left a rather nasty wound stretching all the way up to her hocks. It might not have been quite so bad if she'd let mother heal her before she'd rushed off to Mauja's side. But his voice had risen above the chaos, agony present in his tone, and the girl couldn't leave him to face his sorrow alone. Not with their well-meant but endless supply of questions.

Following a particularly strong argument with her mother, Naerys had gotten better about making her aware of her movements (all the while reminding herself it was only for another half a year). But of course, as time ticked by the girl began to shift back to her old habits. It was easier to simply decide where she wanted to go and then just... go. In a mere half a year she'd be marked as an adult in the herd anyway and then she'd have to choose her path in life. Mother has to let her go. So as another day dawns, the filly steps across the eastern border of the Edge without a thought and without looking back. Petyr, her dearest companion, settles himself upon her withers with one of her passionflowers clasped carefully in his beak. His vibrant green feathers and pale eyes stand out against her predominantly brown and white tones. The air is chilled as she exits the safety buffer of the trees and though her coat is fluffy with the onslaught of winter, she still fluffs her feathered wings in disgust against the cold.

And yet, somehow, her long legs seem to be carrying her further north - following the snowy edge of the northern mountains instead of turning south towards the warmer climes like she usually does. Her steps bring her closer to her father's home in the Falls but she knows that isn't her destination; not today, not ever. Instead, as the girl nears the Hidden Falls she hastily turns further north, slipping past on hooves as quiet as she could make them, and begins her ascent up to the Heavenly Fields (an odd place for the girl to go if she wanted to avoid her father - she would avoid it like the plague if she knew but it wasn't like he told her anything.) On long, steady limbs the girl climbs up the narrow, rocky path to the slightly snowy field above. Once there, Naerys inhales deeply of the fresh mountain air and settles in beneath a lone tree - slightly scraggly and all limbs due to the onslaught of Frostfall. Only then does Petyr hop up her neck to begin the delicate process of weaving the flower into her hair just behind her right ear. Despite the cold and snow, the purple and white blooms sprout and grow around her hooves - creating her own personal patch of Birdsong amidst the deathly chill of frost. But it is in silence that they remain - simultaneously enjoying the quiet and loathing the feeling of loneliness in her youthful heart.

Where the fuck did that girl go now? She had paced the borders of the Falls restlessly, ears pricked and nostrils flared in anxiety in search of her little princess. The filly had vanished... again, and Carl had been too slow to follow this time, or she had managed to evade him. The thought was enough to cause December's blood pressure to sky rocket, and for her imagination to wander to the darkest places of what could be. When she had turned up nothing at Meria's usual places she finally decided to leave the depths of the Falls, praying to the Gods that the girl hadn't wandered this far on her own. For all she knew the filly had simply went somewhere with her father, and she was worrying over nothing. But to the grey this wasn't just nothing, it was everything, because Merialeth was her everything. Tears began to streak her cheeks and she continued to anxiously search, trying to find any trace of her baby girl's scent.

Suddenly from the corner of her eye she saw a hint of bay and white splash, causing her hopes to rise and for her to instantly turn in that direction. All that was left behind from the figure was the rustling of bushes, and without another thought the ivory lass was heading in that direction eagerly. She was so blindly concerned that she didn't take the time to realize that the scent was in fact not Meria's, but someone else's, nor did she take the time to think that such a long journey towards the Heavenly Fields would most likely exhaust a foal her age. All rationality was out the window when it came to her, and soon she was in the clearing and bolting towards the painted girl, ready to grab her in an embrace and to scold her for leaving her mother's sight.

But it wasn't her beloved painted princess, but instead another painted girl, wings adorning her back and flowers trailing behind her so beautifully. The view made her take pause, watching closely with those steel eyes as she tried figure out the situation before her. This wasn't her child, and yet she looked so much like her. Though she held wings upon her shoulders and flowers followed in her wake, the similarities were very familiar. This made her wonder for a moment, before she finally decided that instead of sitting there like an idiot trying to scratch her skull, she decided she would simply ask this older filly if she knew where her child might be. So, after a moment of building up the courage, she finally approached the girl with a determination in her step. She trotted so that she was slightly ahead of her, before finally coming to a halt and speaking"Excuse me, have you seen a little girl around here? She would have brown and white markings like yours, except gold barring around her legs and eyes. She was most likely very excited and probably giggling because she managed to escape her mother."

That wasn't exactly how she wanted to put that, but she couldn't really explain it any other way. The only child she had borne was a weird one, full of adventure and mischief, and the dam had a hell of a time keeping up with her. Miykael didn't seem too bothered by it, in fact the woman sometimes thought he actually enjoyed having such a handful in their lives. If anything, December was the one that was ever worried about anything that involved their child. Perhaps it was because the man had actually had children before, and this was her first, but it still didn't change the fact that sometimes she felt that she was insane in his eyes. She certainly wasn't, she just loved their baby, and to even think of her losing their child was something that made the mare ill. So she patiently waited (to the best of her ability), for this young one to respond, to give any answer or hint that she had seen even the most minuscule sign of her little rascal.

WE ARE THE BEAUTIFUL MISTAKE

Naerys hadn't noticed that as soon as she began the long ascent up to the Heavenly Fields she was being followed. Though perhaps she is aware but simply refuses to acknowledge the other's existence (maybe it's father and goddess knows she certainly doesn't want to stop on his account). Petyr, however, completely notices. There's enough fog and other assorted obstacles impeding his keenly sharp vision but that doesn't stop him from watching the path behind them from his place upon the girl's shoulders. He remains quiet as he memorizes every detail he can, knowing full well that Naerys wouldn't listen to him right then anyway but the information he gathers might well be a necessity - depending on how all of this ends.

Not too long after the pair settled in beneath a tree did her teal eyes fall upon the figure of the thicker, larger figure. It didn't take much for Naerys to figure out that the stranger was watching her. Now, were she a far more fearful creature she might have taken to the air in an effort to escape and, subsequently, high-tail it out of there. Instead Naerys holds her ground, her posture far more erect and alert than it had been before. It was a double-edged sword, really. Only moments ago she'd been wanting company but now that she has it, well... she kind of wishes she didn't. Perhaps it was because of the unknown - the complete and utter lack of information on this particular stranger. It isn't her father, that much is clear, but as the figure begins her approach and Naerys' nostrils breathe deeply of her scent - there are traces of him lingering on the mare's coat.

Maybe father sent this mare after her, knowing full well that Naerys would run (or worse) if she saw him.

She almost convinced herself that it was true, almost shifted her expression to one of anger and contempt, almost pinning her ears back against her skull. Instead they merely flicked backwards before she rights them again, resuming her alert and attentive expression. The mare wastes no time in her approach nor does waste any time with her words. Unexpectedly, her words tug at the girl's heart. All she can imagine is her own mother wandering around, relatively calm outside to hide the torrent of anxiety swirling within, and approaching strangers with the same questions she'd just been presented. It hurt. It was like an invisible blade to her heart, sliding in nice and slow to drag out the agony. Naerys' expression rather quickly shifts to one far more solemn and subdued, concern creasing her brow and softening her sea-green gaze. "No. I'm sorry, I haven't but... maybe I could help you find her?" her voice is soft and genuine, sweet despite her earlier irritation.

Had she been anyone other than who she is, she would have left it there and the mare would have likely continued on in her search for her missing child. But the painted girl couldn't seem to forget the lingering smell of her father upon this mare. Naerys bears no love for the man, not after all that he's done, but she is naturally curious. Did he start a whole new family after he dumped her and her mother? If he did, when would he dump them for yet another new family? And he would do that, wouldn't he? Or was there simply something wrong with her. Naerys snorts softly at her own thoughts before shuffling her hooves amongst her own personal flowers and shaking her head softly. Refocusing on the grey mare, her teal eyes (the perfect mix of Alysanne and Miykael's) carefully watching her face. "Pardon me, but...I can smell traces of my father on you. Do you live in the Falls?" she asks, as politely as she is capable. Oh, Naerys. What have you gotten into now?
