I was looking for a breath of life,
A little touch of heavenly light

It was a strange little collection. The small, rough-hewn rocks made a little pile near the center of the cave where the little girl had put them; carefully separated from the others on a clean patch of the glassy floor. It was Asavvi's tiny treasure trove of what upon first glance seemed ordinary stones in the dim light of the crystal cavern but inside the rough story edges, where crystals of unique and stunning color. There were four so far, and each had been carefully selected from the fragments that been broken of the cavern’s walls, and the little girl seemed to be in the process of selecting a fifth.

Asavvi darted back and forth across the room, carrying various crystals to her little pile in an efficient and determined sort of way. When she arrived with a new one she would set it with the others than pull back to observe the new addition in the midst of its fellows. Her search was not going well, and each she tried was taken away again. Some were removed immediately and some after a minute of two of gazing at it from different angles, but each stone she tried failed to live up to her standards. The first four had been easy: two dark tinted ones and two of burning red, but nothing else seemed right when set beside them.

She must have tried twenty stones, but to Asavvi it seemed far closer to a hundred. With a disappointed huff of breath she, she folded her spindly legs under her and settled down with a bit of a flop. Her white-marked face rested on the cool grounds with the little foursome of stones just beyond her nose so she could stare ponderously at them. One for Ave… One for Mai… One for Mordecai… One for Nizho… She was still determined to find one for herself too, but a rest seemed necessary before carrying on, so she took the time to contemplate her progress. “I’ll have to find a little pouch or something to carry you in so I don’t loose you…” She murmured quietly to the rocks, as if to warn them they better not lose themselves.

Nizho did not know where his sister was going, but she sure as hell was not going without him. Outside of the Dragon's Throat who would protect her? Only him, he knew that somehow, deep down in his fiery chest. Sneaking out of the borders was an art of him, something Mordecai taught him when he was still shaky on his long, thin legs. He was stronger now, aging but still blessed with youthful determination and gall. So he followed his sister, his wombmate, his twin carefully but strongly. His coldfire eyes never left her, until she descended into the mouth of a cave, however. Snorting, the colt trotted briskly toward the entrance and followed the filly with a fearless stupidity. Of all places, closed off, underground, sunless places should be where pegasi were most cautious. He knew that, and he grumbled mentally about Asaavi threatening her own safety.

When he finally found her in the tunnels and rooms and the catacombs, she was resting and talking to herself. Nizho snorted again, digging a cloven hoof into the stoney floor like a bull before crushing a matador. "Asaavi!" He growled, irked at her odd behaviour. What in the hell was she doing, taking a nap in this cold dark and damp cave?! What if something tried to eat her for Sun's sake! Groaning he strode toward her, each hoofstep passionate and purposeful. "Ave would have your head if he knew you made me follow you into a cave." He wanted to say fucking cave like Mordecai would have, but the crass tongue of their older sister often made Asaavi turn sour and Nizho did not want that--he simply wanted to scold her. "What are you doing down here?" He asked, tail flicking behind him and wings ruffling. He tilted his head curiously toward her, though the gunmetal and fire still raged behind dark lashes. He looked to the stones, confusion racking him and making his eyebrows knit together.

Asavvi had very little concern for her own safety, and why would she when there were so many other people who made such a fuss about it. It wasn’t a boldness, like her brother had or rebelliousness like her sister, just a deep lack of understanding that there were creatures who didn’t mind hurting other creatures. Her mother and father always made such a fuss, and Nizho was learning to do the same, but Asavvi drifted on, perfectly unaware that that the world was indeed a very dangerous place. This was rarely a problem though. Her slow and cautious nature meant she rarely got farther than a stones throw from any of her family but this was due more to a deep-seated patience and a liking for home than any fear if what lay beyond.

She sighed again at the sound of her brother’s voice, at the annoyance in it, and lifted her head to look back at him. She was always so pleased to see him that the contented little smile she gave came with a happy hum in her throat. His little lecture was no surprise, but it made her a little ashamed to have worried her twin. “Don’t be mad, nothing’s gonna happen. And besides, Mai said these caves were a safe place.” She sidled up next to him and pressed the flat of her forehead into his neck as a fellow and in the hopes of soothing his ruffled feathers; she never liked to see her Nizho upset.

She pulled back with a bright grin, hoping her would give the safety protocol a rest and join in her enjoyment of the fascinating place. “Mai said she and everyone had to live here for a time and there are so many rooms and I haven’t found it yet but there is one with the fountain where she saw the God of Earth! And isn’t this room beautiful?!” she coaxed, glancing up at the glittering ceiling with near the same level of adoration as the stars. “It’s got every kind of crystal and stone you could imagine and look!” She reached to tug on his mane before skipping back to her little pile and gesturing at them with a flourish of her wings.

The children of the desert were kept safe from the darkness of the land sometimes purely by the sheer amount of sharp, protective eyes that wandered across the borders and arching dunes. Sometimes it was simply luck. However particular circumstances came about, it seemed it was time for Cera to be the one to shield and shadow, his heart a convoluted mess of emotion inside his chest. The young foals slipping out of the borders on small, graceless wings had not escaped his attention, and while Cera could have rushed off to find their parents, it was far more dangerous. Helovia - and the Throat, correspondingly - was huge. He would not have known even remotely where the children would have ended up by the time he had tracked down his best friend and her mate.

So instead, the Golden had followed them. He did not intrude upon their wanderings and playful adventures, aware of the importance of the illusion of independence at that age. He had been swept up in it himself, when he was as young as they were. But he had not been naive for so long, he thought bitterly, eyes helplessly glancing down at the old scar cracked across his breast. Cera gritted his teeth momentarily as he trailed down into the caverns behind the curious beasties. His innocence had been taken from him far too soon. He would not allow the same to happen to them, not while he still held breath in his lungs and life in his veins.

Their enthusiasm - or rather, Asavvi's, he noted with amusement - was a joy to behold. Cera's heart panged with an odd, unknown desire. It was laced with the loneliness he had never outgrown, the desire for family, for love. For a child of the sand, he never could seem to clasp his hands tight enough around the trickling grains. It always escaped him, leaving him bereft with the taste of what could have been. A 'once upon a time' that had never been given a happy ending. And maybe he was slow to grow up, maybe he didn't even consider the fact that he might desire children when he looked longingly upon the foals bickering and playing, but he knew that he wanted whatever he was seeing before him. In some manner or another.

Instead of lingering upon the dark and saddened thoughts rolling around inside his brain, the Prince stepped forward, finally intruding upon their bonding time with a warm smile and gentle eyes that crinkled happily at the corners. "Careful though, the caverns are easy to get lost in," he warned gently at first, though he doubted they would be mesmerized by the shifting hues of the glowing crystals with him there to watch over them now. But he did wander over to where Asavvi was happily pointing out her little pile of colorful stones and gems. His eyes flickered up to her, feeling the stirring of magic in his veins, the metal deposits in the earth abundant so far down below. "Would you like me to make you something out of them? They are very pretty." The Golden smiled, hoping she would respond positively to the idea. Hoping they even remembered him, even if only as their mother's friend. Cera didn't want to scare them in any way.
