She had dreamt of home last night.

Not the home where she had grown up as a young foal. No, not that home. She had dreamt of her other home. The home she had once thought to be nothing but a prison and then became the place where her heart belonged. As much as she missed the home of her foalhood, it could never compare to the aching in her heart from the loss of her first and only love.

Shake it off, girl, and move along, Fiachra told herself. She loosed a head sigh and looked around her. Tall, dark groves of trees surrounded her. Only the narrow path she stood on gave her any real direction of travel. Her hooves were weary from the hike and she longed for a rest from the road, but she knew she could not stop yet. She was, after all, in unknown territory. She knew not who, or what, dwelled in these lands. Here on this dark path, she was vulnerable, and she wasn't about to fail her quest now because she'd been attacked by a bear or... something.

With an snort and a shake of her long head, she sped her pace and forged forward at a quick trot. She did not like this forest much. Unlike the bright and airy oak woods of her youth, these trees were thick with undergrowth that made it more difficult to venture off the trail than she was accustomed to and the elevation made her feel like she was being squeezed into a trap.

At last, the wood seemed to open up a little and Fiachra allowed herself to relax the smallest amount. She slowed herself to an easy walk and lowered her muzzle to the ground to see what she could smell. Many new and interesting scents assaulted her nostrils and she huffed out to clear her senses.

A tingle ran down her topline and her head snapped up, once again hyper-aware of her surroundings. She looked around cautiously, ready to flea or even fight if need be. Despite her wariness, however, her heart fluttered hopefully. People? Could there be other equines in this land? Friendly equines?

"Hello?" she called into the trees, eyes narrowed for signs of movement. "Is anyone out there?"

Zahra, Ilham, and Hanna
It was pride that turned angels into devils
It wasn’t so bad.

The snow, the brisk invigorating air, the seemingly endless space of the north; even the little kitsune leaping artfully between the white snowy drifts dressing the tundra was slowly succumbing to this environment and the curious family they had been given. Zahra shrieked madly as she stumbled over smothered, invisible rocks and plunged headfirst into a fresh icy hill, wet and thrilling. As she pulled herself free the painted yearling laughed brightly and shook the sodden grey tendrils of forelock from her eyes - "It’s freezing Bird!". The well furred canine was indeed wet (she was a small creature, barely standing as high as the knobbly knees of her yearling sister), but her clever undercoat repelled the cold and while Zahra began to shiver and regret their early morning antics, the kitsune played on.

Despite the freshly fallen powder snow glittering around them, the air was cold and dry, and it seemed to burn the filly’s lungs as she drew panting breath after breath. The unusual trio (long ago fostered siblings), were journeying towards the Threshold at a bold gait, keen to pursue purpose and gain some favour in the herd; after all, there was only so much digging one youngster could cope each day. Her eagerness to visit the famous forest  on Helovia’s brink, was a curious thing in truth, for her mother had been a frequent visitor during her time, and many had been recruited to the desert by her hand; it seemed like a fitting task for the Starry-Eyed’s child, and one which neither seemed arduous or futile. On they went, until at last old redwoods began to dot the land.

The filly ruffled her useless wings enthusiastically, pausing to behold the blur of murky green spreading out below, as far as her eye could see. There were many such places in Helovia – labyrinths, rabbit warrens, places within which all sense of time and location was lost, and Zahra had so many corners to cover. At a hearty canter, she Bird and Ilham (who rode snug within her concealed web-mane burrow), moved forward, and not long after broke the shabby tree-line to the Threshold. The air was stained a bitter, musty hue and it forced the young horse’s stride to stagger momentarily; pale-yellow eyes scanned brazenly the world beneath the spindly canopy, shifting from one sunny shaft to another, searching inexpertly for any sign of another nearby.

For an hour or more they walked aimlessly through the tired, shadowy undergrowth.

Boredom inched ever deeper through the girl’s mind, and should not a voice have risen so suddenly through the glade they had fallen into, Zahra might have abandoned their ambitious task altogether and sort a very much more exciting game to play instead. Ears pricked instantly, gaze skirted the near vicinity for movement and she turned her tapering muzzle upwards to scent a small breath of wind. "I’m here," she called brightly, without inhibition, stepping in the direction she felt best represented the position of the mare.

EZITAL

Ezital wound his way through the dense trees and underbrush, nimble as a doe. If he lifted his knees a bit higher than was completely necessary, it certainly wasn't to show off. And if he so happened to trip occasionally, it was because the branch leapt into his path, bent on his destruction. What was there to do but wave his tail at the silly branch and continue on his way? None of them had yet to be successful in bringing down his mood.

He sang to himself for a bit, just a little something he thought he might've heard someone else sing around the herd. But it quickly became clear that he didn't remember any of the words, so he made them up himself. He was far too mature to sing about Ktulu and the giant beaver she called a bear, or Ciceron's overbearing self righteousness.

When that grew tiresome, he switched to humming, swinging his tail behind him like a metronome. The air had a bit of bite to it on this chilly frostfall day, and he liked the way it turned his breath milky white.

He wasn't very concerned with where he was going; he knew this territory pretty well by now. He even felt pretty confident that he could find his way back even if a freak blizzard were to strike the forest and blanket the world in a uniform white. He was just that good.

But of course he wasn't alone out here. He never was. Helovia was too populated to allow anyone a simple afternoon of peace and quiet. Sighing, he steered his trot towards the other horse. Warriors have duties, he reminded himself. As much as Ktulu tried to beat that into them, most of her words stuck to Ezital like wet noodles on a wall. She had managed to instill a sliver of responsibility in his wandering heart, and it was that very sliver that drew him to the horse clearly in distress.

He bounded over a fallen tree to land before the strangers. Surely they wouldn't notice his slight fumble of the landing.

"What's up, Buttercup?" he said in a singsong voice, for not even the pull of responsibility could temper his high spirits.

Fiachra's delicate ears pricked in the direction of the new voice. She turned her body to face the newcomer. She shook her head, reminding herself that it was she who was the newcomer here. For all that she knew, this other person may well be a resident of this forest. She picked her way carefully through the dense vegetation in what she was sure was the right direction, careful not to slip on the frosty ground.

She soon broke through into what may as well pass for a clearing in this wood, where the trees opens a bit and the forest floor was less covered. Her eyes sought movement in the trees and were presently rewarded with the sight of another equine moving towards her. Though she was tired for her journey and in a strange and unfamiliar land, a smile split the mare's face despite herself. Here, at last, was a seemingly friendly face!

She lifted her face slightly and whickered a easy greeting. "Hello, over here!" she called across the clearing. As she drew closer to the other, she took in as many details as she could. Fiachra could tell by the smell that the equine was a mare, like her, but she looked young, as if she had not yet seen her second year. That was nothing to bother Fiachra, who was fairly young herself, but what a youngster was doing wandering these woods was beyond her. Was her herd nearby? Fillies in her homeland were not allowed to wander far until their third year, for fear of succumbing to... well... back to the present, you, she chided herself.

"Hello," she greeted again. She could not keep the smile from herself, so glad was she to be meeting another horse after months on the road alone. "Who are you, then?" she asked, forward as ever. "I am new to these lands, and I am looking for a place to rest my head for a time. Do you live here? Is your heard nearby? Or are you alone?" She looked down to notice a small fox-like creature at the girl's feet. "Oh! What a strange little thing! Does it belong to you?" She paused to catch her breath after this over-eager stream of questions and realized abruptly how foolish she must seem. Relief flooded her that it was such young mare who had found her first and not some high ruler of this land.

She sighed heavily, her forelock fluttering over her eyes as she bobbed her head into a polite bow. "Apologies...," she puffed, her voice quieter now that she had calmed down. "It has been an age since I've spoken with another... um... anyone," she offered by way of explanation for her absurd outburst.

"My name is Fiachra. What is yours, if I may ask?" She looked up and gave the Vraga a hopeful smile just as another equine leapt out of the trees before them. She did not jump, although she scolded herself for being so wrapped up in her desperation for company not to notice the hoof-beats of another's approach.

Turning to greet the third arrival, she found a heat rising to her face and could not stop the laugh that rose from her throat. This one was certainly full of himself and in a fine form by his theatrical entrance and tone of voice. She could not believe her luck! Two new friends in one day? Potential friends, she scolded herself inwardly. These are strangers to you, Fia, and you do not yet know their intentions.

Still, she could feel glee welling up in her heart at no longer being alone, for however long it lasted. "Well, hello there!" she laughed, her small smile now a full grin. "You're quite the spirited one, aren't you?"

It was pride that turned angels into devils
Certainly no expert in the business of freeing those trapped in the complex of trees, and certainly no more adapt and finding the prisoners to begin with, Zahra found herself following closely the cunning nose of her sister; they tracked presumably the newest and freshest tinge, amid an utter chaos of colour. Thankfully, the other horse was following, it seemed, a similar inclination and before she knew it, the black and white girl could see the dark silhouette of another horned being striding forward between dense trunks. The glade they came together in was bright, airy, and a comfortable contrast to the musty dimness of the old forest surrounding - nostrils broadened opportunistically, and lungs drew a deep and hungry breath. The stranger offered a smile, friendly enough, and Zahra replied quickly with a beaming grin of her own.

Quietly and thoughtfully she observed the adult coming nearer, her expression maintaining a consistent air of cheer. The Basin had many unicorns, a preference towards them even she felt, and the winged-girl was fairly certain that they would readily accept another just like them - three opal-blue horns adorned this fair face no less. Zahra realised she was staring,  thoughts were rambling and she blinked twice, nodding with a flash of pearly teeth in greeting. "Hi!" She replied at last when the mare was poised at last in front of her. In a well-meant and natural gesture, the filly’s whiskered lips lifted briefly towards the skin of her company. "I'm Zahra," she answered promptly, boldly, altogether forgetting her travelling companions in the heat of the moment.

The conversation (surely that’s what this was) seemed to be flowing rather well - at least, answering questions was something Zahra was very good at!

The mare with the lovely purple eyes spoke on, and a larger grin still embraced the young pegasus’s two-toned features. "I don’t think anyone lives here," she informed the older matter-of-factly, laughing a little, because the idea of anyone finding comfort in the wilderness they stood in seemed far fetched. "Uh-huh, my family is nearby - kinda… They live that way, between the mountains where ice coats the lake and the aurora lights dance at night." Zahra gestured north, turning her tapering nose in the general direction from which she and her siblings had come. By that time the unicorn mare’s attention had diverted downward, and realising, the filly’s own eyes followed.

"OH! Whoops," she blurted suddenly, cheeks flushing red beneath the fine mask of clean white. "…and my sisters are Bird (eyes grazed the still kitsune) and Ilham - but she doesn’t say much." Slim shoulders shrugged and she seemed altogether oblivious that the puny spider was tucked safely from sight. The kitsune’s four tails twirled to the sound of her name however, and sharp emerald eyes passed by the much taller horse; she remained in place, perched tightly against the bony leg of the filly. "We go everywhere together y’know. They are my very best friends!"

Towards the apology then offered, Zahra merely scoffed - she wasn’t fussed at all. In truth, the girl was more than pleased with how easy this all seemed.

Just as Fiachra finally offered her name, there was unexpected commotion nearby. A stallion sailed with all of the grace Zahra might have, from the tree-line and the filly startled, eyes wide with surprise. Shifting a cautious glance by the like-coloured mare, she established that the other was not one to fear - her friend was on the verge of laughter, or so it appeared, and mimicking the reaction of the other, the girl chortled softly beneath her breath. Perhaps they’d already come across each other in this tangle of trees - it certainly seemed that way as the stallion fed his queer greeting forward.

EZITAL

Ezital shook out his mane and took in the mares' reactions to him. One of them couldn't even be called that, she was a filly at best, though she already towered over him. It wasn't much of an accomplishment, really. He'd already come to terms with the fact that Helovia was quite often a land filled with giants after meeting Tembovu several months earlier.

The mare in particular that he had charged in to rescue seemed almost delighted by him. He smiled back at her, puffing out his chest a little. He far preferred her reaction to the ones others seemed to have, largely confusion or irritation. But it wasn't his fault that they were all humorless, dry old bats. He was a hit with the foals though. Vitani always seemed to find him at all the herd gatherings.

Spirited, she called him. He decided he quite liked that perspective.

He snorted and rolled his eyes at the filly's exaggerated alarm. Did she not understand that her mere size would account for a lot if he wanted to take an issue with her? His meager fighting skills that he'd acquired couldn't overcome the fact that she had a giant ass set of wings sprouting from her shoulders. He couldn't help but to stare at them a bit overly long. They were impressive, yes, but having never met a horse with this particular affliction he could only assume they were some anomaly. His world simply didn't include horses with wings, or in the filly's leggy, underdeveloped case, a rat with wings.

"What's wrong, kid?" he drawled, trying out a bored tone one of the elder stallions used on him. "Never seen a real horse before?"

He flashed a broad smile at the pair of them to let them know his words were intended to be taken lightly. "I'm Ezital, a minion for Ktulu's army in the Hidden Falls, but feel free to call me by my other title, 'your majesty'".

He bent his knee in a dramatic half bow.

Oh, this little stud was quite full of himself. But, nevertheless, it brought cheer to Fiachra's world-weary heart. She looked over at the filly, Zahra, she had said her name was, and offered her a reassuring grin. This merry fool was nothing to be frightened of, she was sure. Just a zealous, perhaps overly so, young stallion doing what many young stallions do: flirt. And though it may be her long stint of loneliness talking, he was rather good at it.

"Easy, dear," she comforted the white-faced filly. "This one has no harm in his intent, I think. He is only a jester." Flashing a brilliant grin towards the stallion Ezital, Fiachra bobbed her head. "It is wonderful to meet you both. A true pleasure."

She turned the slightest bit to face Ezital. "My name is Fiachra, your majesty," she told him, exaggerating his claimed title mockingly and giving him a slight bow in return. "This is my newest friend, young Zahra. She comes from the, er...." Glancing at the winged filly, she paused for a moment, trying to remember if Zahra had said the name of where she lived. "Um... the north?" she concluded, a bit unhelpfully. She gave a little shrug and moved on.

Her flank twitched with a sudden itch and the agile mare bent easily around to rub her small nose-horn against the irritation. She sniffed herself, but came back to the conversation. "I am hoping for a friendly place to rest my head for a while." Then, to give some explanation, she continued, "I have been travelling for a long time, you see. And from a very, very long way away."

She snorted as the irritation on her side returned. This time she turned and bit harshly at her own hide in an attempt to quell the itch for good and ever. Had she brushed against something in the trees as she had diverted from the path? Perhaps. Or perhaps it was only her tired and aching body making up phantom discomforts in an attempt to hurry her along in finding a place to lie down for a while. She really couldn't be sure.

It was pride that turned angels into devils
The antlered stallion came to rest in the company of the freshly met pair, eyes rolling, staring, before he spoke and issued a rather relieving grin; Zahra, though still very much unsure about his unusual manner, steadied herself under the reassurance of the thrice-horned and with ears dancing between them both listened as the conversation seemed resume. Perhaps his type of flair was something she would through the years to come, learn to appreciate in a world of discord and ill-temper - certainly it was nothing she had ever come across in the wilds of Helovia.

While she stood there quietly, it came to pass that yellow eyes began to inspect (as discreetly as could be managed), both the taller mare, and the shorter, red-bellied male. They were a curious blend of colour - the three of them - crimson, purple and gold; patterned, painted black and white. Zahra and Ezital even shared the same pasty face! It softened her mood in a childish sense, gave her the vague impression of at least one thing in common and certainly it helped to quash that insecure feeling which had risen inside her mind. All at once the stallion seemed a whole lot less intimidating.

All the while, there had been mention of a tulu-army, a hidden fall and titles - none of which made any real sense to the girl, and more than fuelled her distraction. It was only as he bent a knee in strange gesture that Zahra’s full attention resumed. Fiachra had offered forth her name to the curious steed, and the young pegasus nodded quickly (unsure whether she was expected to bow also), as her own name was voiced. Thoughtfully observant eyes found the mare for a second as she stumbled through the filly’s place of residence, but soon enough it was declared well enough - the north. Again her small skull bounced rhythmically, lips brandishing an ever-growing smile.

Zahra soon learned that Fiachra was searching for a place to rest, and she stiffened pearly white teeth across her tongue, only long enough for the slender adult to finish her story - it all sounded very much like that of she and her sisters’, and eagerly she licked her lips, wondering if the blue-horned had come from as far south as the Deep Forest too.

"Fia!" she blurted at last (adopting an easier name much the same way she had done for Ashamin barely a month before), hardly noticing her own attempt to rid the other of that itch - subconsciously she moved towards the disturbed hair upon the mare’s raven flank, aiming to place teeth gently and briefly upon whatever was causing that nagging irritation. "Did you come from the forest too? Asha found me there, he asked if I wanted a family and a home. I said yes and now the Basin is my home - you could come and see Asha? And Johnny too, and Eldada and… (maybe not Deimos)." The invitation was as earnest as the glitter in her sunlit gaze as it switched rapidly between the pair. "I reckon they would like you too Ez… Ez… zzza-l!"

EZITAL

Ezital couldn't help bursting into laughter as Zahra butchered his name. "Call me Ezzi if you can manage that, filly," he told her once he caught his breath. He'd never had a nickname before, but allowances had to be made for the trials of youth. He could only vaguely remember being so young, his own youth was a blur of misfortune and suffering. The herd was his salvation, and he no longer needed to starve or worry about predators while he lived in the protection it provided.

So that was why he didn't bother to mask his distaste at the filly's suggestion. "I'm not suited to the mountains," he sniffed. "I would freeze to death within a fortnight! I don't even know why your feathers aren't icicles yet."

He turned to Fiachra and winked conspiratorially. "The falls are really much nicer. The cold months are far milder and the water is always pleasantly cool during the warm ones. Everyone is pretty nice there too."

He paused to consider with a slight tilt of his head. "Well, except for Ciceron, but I'm sure that’s personal. I did bite him on the butt a bit too hard during a spar. And kicked his companion. And screamed obscenities at him after he used his magic on me."

Hmm. Perhaps it was time to approach him again and try to make amends. Ezital had made a few attempts to talk to him since that little incident, but with very little luck. He'd mostly given up on that potential mentoring relationship, which was a shame because it had started out so well.

"Anyway, I think you'd like the falls better, I can take you back with me if you'd like. It's not far from here and I promise not to get you lost." He offered his best you-can-trust-me smile, and hoped it looked different from his I-will-push-you-off-a-cliff smile.

Fiachra's face fell as she realized just what a difficult decision she was now expected to make. On the one hand, this adorable young filly seemed almost as desperate she she was to make a connection with other equines as she, and on the other hand, this charming stud who made her laugh harder than she had in a long while offered a place for her in a more temperate climate, which suited her better. She frowned a little as she thought and shifted her weight slightly to bring her flank within range of Zahra's reaching teeth. The touch of another brought a tiny smile back to her face and her ears dropped a bit as she gave the gold-brushed filly an expression of thanks.

"Well," she began, looking west in the direction she suspect the herd lands lay. "I am a bit overwhelmed by two offers of welcome...." She was putting off the inevitable decision she would have to make, of course. "The warmer grounds of the... 'falls', did you say?... sound wonderful, but...," here she glanced at Zahra and gave Ezital a meaningful look. She let out a soft sigh. Does this vraga have anyone to look after her? she thought to herself.

"I need to think about this," she concluded at last. With a smile at them both, Fiachra took a few steps towards Ezital. "Let's walk together for a while, the three of us." She nodded her head towards the west and continued confidently in the direction. "We'll take Zahra near to her home, and then, Ezzi," she directed, only putting a slight tease on his new shortened name, "I shall decide whether to go with you to these falls."

And I can see if this girl has anyone taking care of her, she finished the thought in her head. Hopefully....

OOC Edit: I am going to go ahead and post a welcoming thread in the Basin, since that is where Fiachra is headed, to try and speed things along a bit so that she can start getting involved. Feel free to join w/ @Zahra there, or whatever. ^_^
