As they traveled southwards the threshold’s forests changed into the moist wetlands of jungle and after that they changed again, this time into the mirrored surfaces of the Halcyon Flats. After a few days travel however, the familiar sight of the island came into sight; hazy and vague, but still there, on the horizon. From afar strangers might believed it to appear as a secluded, empty piece of land. Perhaps even deserted, maybe. The tiger mare’s pace quickened to trot further up the dune hills where she watched the view of the isle grow more vivid before her golden eyes. “There it is!” She said, loudly, excitement brushing through her normally so calm voice. But with the salty wind having fallen into her face, pushing her mane around along with her words, she wasn’t sure if the filly had heard her right. She turned her red-striped neck to see if the girl calling herself Roots had been following. Somewhere in the back of her mind, Maren assumed she must be tired, she was still young after all, but they were almost there and the last bit she didn’t have to walk, anyway. They would sail. “Do you see it?” She asked before turning her eyes once more to the horizon. “It’s there, where the wind comes from.” It welcomes us.

Maren was sure to not let it out of her sight as she trotted down the dune slopes covered in mull sand as she found her way to the beach. As her hoof-beats resounded against the soggy soils, another familiar shape welcomed her home. It was a peculiar shape, one that wasn't found just anywhere on any beach. Only when the Throat's Diviner was around, to be precise. Besides having dried like a tomato in the Sun, Maren’s boat still lay where she had left it. High and dry from the grabby foamy hands of the sea. Not like it would’ve preferred, she was sure, but save to be left for a few days. Her boat was after all a mirror of herself; when it navigated the ocean waves, it had this everlasting cry for knowledge of what lay beyond; What lay further than one could see — ever imagine there could be? And only she could hear it, respond to it, since she knew that pure need so well. Her boat wanted to sail that sea of endless possibilities, not lay here in the mull sand. Where it could only catch the fleeting scents of salty winds, becoming friends with hollowed shells — No.

She rubbed her head against the slightly backwards-bend wooden stem of the vessel, lovingly — Happy it wasn’t stolen. After all, someone had tried once and it could very well happen again if she was not careful. I shall protect you,” she (boldly) claimed in a soft whisper to her utmost treasured possession, meanwhile stroking the wood with the feathers of her left wing in a slightly disturbing manner. But never mind that, since she suddenly remembered the existence of the foal she had promised a ride. “Er, yeah,” she scraped her throat before turning to the matters at hand. Thinking of their return to the sea and island-home, her wings now grew like happy flowers next to her ears. Her eyes moved from the ocean to the filly, back to the boat.  “Here, help me push it back to sea,” she requested before starting to urge the vessel to slide over the wet grains, making the most horrid noise when it did.

It was different when one walked with a companion. Despite their contrasts – because the child was obviously amused by many things, young and inexperienced – somehow another soul brought a platonic comfort to the girl. The first day had been the hardest, but she did not want to show any signs of weakness just yet. To her dismay she legged a little, but as the days progressed she found energy in the distractions of the terrain. Struggling over the desire to stay in each land for a day or two. But the mare was driven by a purpose that set her lips into a contemplative silence, uttering mumblings she didn’t quite catch as she trailed behind: smelling the earth, the moss on trees, and later – the sands and waters of the Halcyon Flats.

The sight was none she had quite seen before, besides a strip of sand bars in the water once. Noting the area she continued to follow, pausing now and then only to pick up her pace with flight. Giggling when Maren seemed to drabble behind her own thoughts.

To the child’s delight the terrain continued to change. And along a growing presence of sand, she realized Maren went off into a trot. Her ears darted forward, increasing her pace Ru replied with a pleased neigh. She swept her eyes from Maren’s gaze to the lands ahead of them. An island surrounded by ocean.

Home? She thought – as the winds twisted around them. Through them, with the taste of salt brushing against her lips. The girl lifted her wings then, licking her lips, shuffling them and giving them a BIG stretch as she squealed and tossed her head. Yes, I do!

This was going to be home.

Excitement sparked in her heart as she darted forward, spurring her legs on below the dune. The child’s wings quivered briefly, aching to run faster, run harder! And take flight! Another squeak broke off from her lips, spotting what must have been the boat.

She tossed her head again, stopping short of the wooden structure to rear up playfully. Kicking out her forelimbs, triumphant! She grinned, falling back to the earth with a happy hum, a sound light and briefly arioso. Ru strutted ahead to take a better look of the carpentry, unaware and glazed in wonder of how such a thing could be constructed in the first place. An ear twisted in Maren’s direction, tugging her eyes to grace her caressing feathers. The child laughed openly, as children do – bright and rolling with a brief scratching tone to it.

The amusement of her giggles died into a simple smile, captivated by the expression of the wings on her head. Wondering – if she might be able to grab a feather or two one of these days. But the prospect of such a wild thing did not bode well, and perhaps… that would be for another time and endeavor to plan out…

Ru nodded in compliance, and skipped over to Maren’s side. She pressed her weight against the boat; a shiver briefly ran down her spine with the sound. Procuring a grunt from the girl before she put all her effort and will into moving it.

Sooner or later though, they would be floating a top the waters with all the open sea to embrace them!

She considered herself quite the lucky girl, indeed.

Megaera & Asavvi

“Was it really only two years ago?” The little stargazer asked, looking out across the water. She stood on the beach with her mother, listening with rapt attention and still coming up with a dozen questions to ask. Today’s lesson was the more recent history of the Throat, though the filly’s mind was wrapping her mind around the complexity and relativism of the word ‘recently’. Her life may have began the last time Tallsun had shed its light upon the Throat, but the things she had seen stretched eons. How often did she reach back with her magic to see the events that might once have been monumental but now left no trace upon the earth? For Asavvi, the movements of ancients could happen in the ‘now’ and still somehow two years seemed like such a very long time. It’s all relative.

“Yes! Where the water stretches from here to the rest of Helovia, the land used to be quite different. When I first came here it was a wide and rocky canyon and for a time there was only a narrow strip of land connecting us to the Heart lands.” Meg was patient in explaining the story, though she could hardly understand why her daughter was more entertained by these tales than galavanting off into mischief. Mordecai and Nizho where rarely content to sit quietly and listen to Meg for an extended period of time, but that seemed to be all Asavvi was ever interested in doing. “When I was still a warrior, all of Dragon’s Throat participated in a quest so we could better guard our home. We gather what we had been instructed to gather-your Mai even lit a torch from the fires of the Heart—and the Sun God was pleased with out efforts so he took the land bridge and left his bridge in its place. That’s why we need the keys—“

The sultana cut herself off when she looked down and was surprised to see she no longer had her daughter’s attention. The girl’s blue-grey eyes peered across the waters, half-shut against the winds as she tried to focus on the opposite shore “Is there someone over there?” she murmured, turning to find her mothers eye before glancing back. Meg strained her sight, wishing Gwaihir could have been there with his much keener eyes. the faint lines of figures moved on the distant beach, moved toward the water… Surely no one wound attempt a swim, especially at this time of year. “I think it must be the diviner. Yes look, she’s got that boat of hers…” Meg smiled and gave an baffled shake of her head. The tiger mare was an odd one, that was sure, but after their last (and first?) meeting she had taken a liking to her. “Let’s wait and greet them, shall we?” Asavvi nodded and enthusiastic content and the pair watched out over the water follow the progress of the little boat.

The hellboy had taken his time in arriving back from his journeys away from the Throat. Having only met his little demon he was short of contact, but in fairness that was probably the best idea for any other creatures. His mood had grown sour once more as his muscles swelled underneath his bodice from the work of travelling over days, made worse by the harsh biting winds of Frostfall. But Helovia had given him the Dragon's Throat and he took the warmer sands of its terraria in his dark stride. With fiery pools grimacing at the mild temperatures he walked over the desert before spotting several herdmates in the distance. He decided that now was the time to speak more with the creatures the soldier had essentially abandoned and forgotten his duties. With a kick of his hind pillars, the feathers hitting the sand and blowing up in the air the handsome obsidian brute picked up the pace and galloped over, letting the swollen muscles burn from the effort.

Slowing down he caught the end of the conversation: a new herdsmate. How wonderful, Abaddon thought with a slight sarcastic tone. They were all stood on the bridge that he had crossed when first coming to the Throat. There were four creatures, one an ivory striped fae, a mahogany winged female, a yearling fae and yet another filly. The ivory fae and one little filly appeared to be in a makeshift boat whilst the others stood there waiting on the bridge, and this is when Abaddon shrugged his massive shoulders as he understood that she was bringing this new one to them by the boat.

The outnumbered brute was actually astounded at the amount of females that had congregated in this one place. Yet in spite of this, he knew that they were no match for him should they be in equally foul moods as himself. He lined himself up with the mahogany creature that watched over them along with the little yearling, but he took little interest in why they were stood there. He did not want to bother with the niceties but he reluctantly did so in a bid to watch them bite. With a grunt he took no time in speaking out to them, unaware and uncaring of what they were initially discussing,
"Good day ladies, what are we doing here now?" His sinister pools gazed at each and every one of them, his massive sturdy size towering above the younglings and the strikingly pretty tiger-striped fae, along with the mahogany hued dame. He then continued, "I am Abaddon, a soldier of the Dragon's Throat and it's a... pleasure... to meet you all." Of course it wasn't a pleasure but Abaddon's smile following his words gave this away.
