The young one could not sit still. There was a need, a desire to explore grinding behind the gears of her mind. Once more she pressed forward, running towards the water’s edge of her new found home to spread her wings wide – embracing the wind with a sigh of content. Escaping the oppressive confines of the earth, and climbing ever higher into the atmosphere.

This was freedom, being able to dance and chase the streams – gliding comfortably, or darting here or there for a little bit of action. For the time being Ru did not mind the somber pace as she began to plateau in her path. Gazing down across the snow covered terrain with interest. Studying the earth from down below, and amusing herself with the dots of animals or equine as they passed (or so she assumed).

She made her way up north from the Dragon’s Throat, circling around Helovia’s heart – amazed by the breadth and appearance of the crater. She had no prior knowledge of its name, and without a teacher she could only assume that the sky had thrown a piece of itself down there. Or perhaps it was cursed to smolder forever and ever? Despite its tempting warmth, rolling and pushing her about as she flew, she was drawn by what lay further ahead. Recalling what Maren had said of the Hidden Falls; something about following the river and moving north.

Without the night sky it was hard to navigate, especially as the clouds gathered – blocking the celestial bodies from view at most times. Thinking that she was indeed pressing forward, ‘north’, she went ahead and abandoned the hot warmth below. Adventure, it appeared, seemed to have seared into her young heart. For a while longer she felt lost; perhaps she should have turned back? Did she make note of enough land marks to find her way back home…?

It had become second nature for the worries to envelop the girl (perhaps less prominent as they filtered behind her musings). But without due harm, because she had survived thus far – lost in a foreign land, without the assurance of a guiding hand to tell her where to go. It did however; invoke a sense of emptiness, a stagnant will that appeared purposeless until one understood the peace behind it. Because if she had not embraced this feeling, there were other thoughts and questions struggling to gain the child’s attention, such that the child would rather ignore.

Without realizing it then, Ru settled her heart with peace, in the silences, and in the threats ahead, carrying on with a hopeful unknown. She might be lost, but she had been lost before all the same. It was with a growing confidence that she stayed her course, taking note of the terrain and peculiar landmarks to usher her forward.

The sight of a long streaming river brought some reassurance. Noting the pregnant sky, heavy with snow, she dipped below to hover above the meadow. Being several paces from the streaming river, the sound rolled and gurgling beside, procured a giggle from the child. Adjusting her wings then, to settle into the snow.

She squeaked from the cool touch. The snow was rather tall here, and came up just above her knees. Tossing her head she plowed up beside the river, spotting a large tree just ahead. She came to a stop, shook herself from all that frost and snow dust.

Ru stood still then, holding her breath for a moment as her heart pumped behind her ears and slowed. It was awfully quiet here. The clouds up above seemed poised, and without avail snow began to fall from the skies. Big, fat clumps of snow.

She was surprised how quiet it was. How still the world had become, with the exception of the fluffy snow. Her blue-green eyes scanned about the terrain, surprisingly content with the lack of noise. And how very alone she was, how small and insignificant she had become.

The world was still. It was pristine, perfect, porcelain. Amaris felt the cold - but it didn't bother her, for she had a pelt thick and fluffy lined with scales of a dragon (and a new soul-bond to keep her busy besides). Indeed, it was simple to forget about such worries as being cold when one's mind was full of discovering the world through a newborn's eyes. Dragonsblood ran through her veins and a dragonsoul now danced along her own (more-so than the souls her magic would have called in Dramyrth's absence). She called those souls today as well - a red and a green, a reminder of more summery seasons, and discovered a cacophony within her mind louder than anything she had experienced before.

But the mare was in good spirits - her little king was thriving, gliding on the breeze just above her as she walked, twirling and dancing with the other souls that his true-bonded had summoned. Dramyrth didn't question whether he was superior to them - he simply was. It amused Amaris, the surety which with he lived his life, the confidence that he was a king no matter everything else that existed in the world that might deny it. It was more than a simple notion; it was his existence.

The world was still, except for the dragonmare and her companions, pushing through the snowdrifts. Every now and then, the little king would dip his flight to raise up a fresh, powdery shower of snow in front of the mare. Laughter, gentle and exotic, gurgled from her maw as she would then rear and dance beneath the flakes; an angel dipped in gold, silver and caramel.

The moonlight shifted then - the clouds above congregated and seemed to decide that fresh snow was needed - with a draconic song the companions sung at its arrival, and Amaris decided to finally seek out shelter. She was surprised to find a path already laid out for her, as she too followed the river. It had seemed to appear out of nowhere, and, being the semi-predatory being that she was, Amaris followed it with little fear and trepidation for her wellbeing as to what might have carved it.

Surprise coloured her features when she reached the treeline where the filly lingered, her steps pausing as she looked with golden pools at the pegasus girl while her companions flew onwards to investigate for themselves. "Hello?" she called with her gentle tones, lowering her tiara and holding her position out under the falling snow, lest she frightened the girl (any further than her companions may already have done, anyway). "I mean no harm," she added, "and nor do they. We only seek shelter from the snow."

A melody like none she had ever heard before broke into the air gently. It made her skin stand, and her ears swivel – searching for its source. Curiosity tickled the emptiness that settled inside of her, and so did a tinge of fear. It was alien, incredibly foreign and new – as the dragon’s song fanned out with a haunting presence – invisible.

She had yet to reign in on her initial reaction; the shadows beyond her taking shape and vague form. Tricking the eyes, invoking the mind to fill in the gaps with all sorts of demonic and hideous forms. Alarming the child as this sound appeared to increase in strength, two-toned – perhaps three – there were more and more, and she couldn’t see them. The sound was above, below, behind?

Ru pressed further into the old tree. It was cold, but the branches that spread above her provided cover. A tangible thing, to remind her it was only in her head. And that there was nothing to fear. Absolutely nothing.

The child tensed as her eyes grasped Amaris’ form. Ducking her head when – dragons – littered the sky with their sharp and scaly hides. Her mouth opened in awe, procuring a sigh – confused and cautious, all together bewildered. Pressing into the old tree to remind herself: there was nothing to be afraid of.

Nearly unawares of the voice, ahead of her, she snapped her attention back to the mare. A feeling of shame unexpectedly possessed the girl. As if she had revealed too much of her weakness, she was now obligated to show otherwise.

Demons, evil spirits? Pah!

She pressed away from the tree and stood poised towards the mare. Taking deep, calm, breaths… Ru bit back on her tongue as she bobbed her head in a nod.  Glancing now and then to the sky, looking for the flying lizards – somewhat doubtful of the mare’s reassurances.

They had just met after all! And she was… she was - mesmerizing

How could this world be so rich with magic? How was it that the mare had scales – were those really scales?

With a paper-thin confidence, she carefully drew closer – her nose leading, stretching out her neck to take in the mare’s scent. It was a feverish feeling – posing to be courageous, whilst fighting back your desire to withdraw and hide was maddeningly difficult!

Ru was beginning to feel a tad crazy, and perhaps she was – or was it foolishness, that spurred her to Amaris’ side? Avoiding her head on, and swaying away. Eyes grazing the golden body.

But I wish to feel, to touch… She would, she must – and so she did. With a shaky hum she poked Amaris with her charcoal muzzle. Against the shimmering scales of that shoulder, and giggled nervously as she shifted back. Pressing into her heals, and further into the snow walls behind her. Stopping shortly after, near enough for the golden stranger to touch – should she really stretch that neck.

She squealed and reared as she caught sight of the golden one. Wings batting briefly – as if, making herself appear ‘larger’ might warn the beast – beast-s that is!

It looks mother was right after all! There were dragons; living, breathing dragons?
