“We cast a shadow on something wherever we stand, and it is no good moving from place to place to save things; because the shadow always follows. Choose a place where you won't do harm - yes, choose a place where you won't do very much harm, and stand in it for all you are worth, facing the sunshine.” -- E.M. Forster

It was a long flight from the Threshold back to the Throat, and an even longer walk. Meg would choose the aerial route over the terrestrial every time if given the option but she didn’t begrudge the necessity of staying afoot given her new accompaniment. (Well, maybe she might have a bit, but the curiosity the antlered mare sparked far outweighed it.) The Eagle had Gone on a head when the left the threshold, and would reach the Throat before them with orders to hurry back and fetch her with all haste if anything was amiss. Meg watched Tuppence carefully thought their journey, taking note any other habits that, like Tuppence’s greeting ritual, betrayed her as a foreigner. The way she spoke was strange too, a slow, gravely drawl that seemed to lure you in and yet had turned so unexpectedly sharp with grief in that instant at the threshold.

As they moved through the Deep Woods, the Flats, and finally into the grassy lands of the Heart, Meg took care to explain each land and it’s features. In that times between she sketched a rough outline in words of the layout of Helovia: what lay in each direction, the placement of the four herds… There was so much that the would have rather asked the mare though, and it was a test to keep up the guise of polite interest. I have worn bones before…What do yours mean?

They were nearing the beach now, and Meg almost purred with happiness when they crested the last dune that brought them in sight of the sea. Beyond the water lay her home, and her family; she always missed her children and her husband so dreadfully when she was away. She paused on the sandy ridge, and looked back to find the antlered mare. “Well, there it is. Our God of Sun provides the crossing. I’ll have to ferry you across this time, if you aren't afraid of heights.” She stretched out her left wing, spreading the fathers to reveal a glint of the golden key that was tucked securely there. “The crafter’s will provide you with a key soon enough, and you’ll be able to come and go as you wish.” She paused, unsure how to bring up what had seemed to be a touchy subject. “If, ah… If there is anything the herd can do to help you on your mission, I hope you’ll let us know. We have quite a few resources that might aid you.”

tuppence

a touch of destiny

The eagle and his mother was kept keenly in Tuppences sight as she followed the Sultana south. The further she trod in the path of the pegasus the warmer the atmosphere became. Frostfalls clutch on the south seemed much lighter then the threshold it seemed. Tuppence wished she might borrow a pair of wings for the journey to take the weight off her old hooves, though she would never wish to permanently own some. How large they were! It made it harder to hide, and possibly much less nimble in a fight. One would always have the advantage the air gave though.

Megaeras running commentary of the landscape was hard to hear, but very welcome. Tuppence was noticing different kinds of fauna and flora to anything she had seen in her homeland. How exotic Helovia was turning out to be! Particularly the south. "Your world has much beauty" Was just one of the many things Tuppence cooed up to the sky. Most of the journey she spent listening intently to the southern matriarch, having no questions yet to ask. She would just flit in Megaeras shadow and hold onto the excitement of seeing her new home.

Scrambling over sand and burning hot dunes was something Tuppence was very much used to, but that didn't guarantee she enjoyed it. She both loved and hated sand. The feel of it thickening her dreadlocked mane made her shudder and pulsing up the deepest dunes made her muscles ache, but nothing felt greater then sand underneath her hooves - that just had to be what treading on a cloud felt like. The eagle mother had paused ahead on a dune. Had they made it? Tuppence had one final hike it seemed up a mountain of sand before she could take in the view Megaera seemed to be soaking her gaze in. Breaking into a pulling canter Tuppence managed to reef her way up the dune in three mighty strides before taking her place at the Sultanas off side. The Dragons Throat was quite an impressive sight. Perhaps this splashed doe had expected something different because it shocked her.
"Our God of Sun provides the crossing. I’ll have to ferry you across this time, if you aren't afraid of heights.”
"Not heights" The exotic mare slurred, her hazel gaze turning to the winged ones sightgivers with a black grin. "I afraid of sharp teeth! What does the eagle mother fear?" Her words were almost flirtatious, but her attention soon turned back to her new sun scorched home.

It felt like she could stand there and look at the island forever. How perfect it was, how magnificent; everything in the world that mattered to Meg was rooted there in that rise of sandy shore. Her home, her herd, Einarr and their children, all collected safe and sound on the wide island and standing here on the edge of the Heartlands to gaze at it was second only to being there. She didn’t get the chance too often, but she liked bringing newcomers. It would reminded her of when Gaucho had first brought her. Megaera always hoped that the castaways she took in would find the same sense of belonging and pride that she had discovered in her time there.

Meg looked to the antlered mare as she came up the slope to stand beside her; dark eyes searched Tuppence's face for the wonder and excitement was was not disappointed. She smiled and that fell easily into a laugh at the mare's mention of sharp teeth. It was not always like Meg to make friends so quickly but she already had a liking for her bit of saucy humor. But what did Meg fear? That question cast  a faint shadow over the Sultana’s face as she too looked back towards the Throat. There it was really, all her greatest fears that sprung fro her greatest joys. The downside of having so much was the threat that it could all be taken away and that was the ever present cloud on the horizon of Megaera’s sunny sky. She hesitated for a moment, the spoke with a sober sort of honesty. “I fear for my children…and for my herd. I fear that one day I could fail to protect them.” In the sand her hooves shifted, suddenly uncomfortable with the stillness.

“Well, come on then.” She said briskly, trying to brush away the previous moments and starting down the last dune toward the edge of the salty water. At the first cold splash, Meg paused to wait for Tuppence, looking back with a nonchalant grin. “The crafters will fashion you your own key so you may come and go as you please. Stand close and the bridge will lift both of us.” Within the folds of her feathers the little key hummed with the Sun’s magic, ready to cross when it’s bearer willed it.
