XOLANI
The morning dawned in the eastern sky, the growing light coaxing Xolani's eyes open.  The waters of the oasis lapped at the sands before her, sands that stretched as far as the eye could see.  It was difficult to imagine that the desert was, in truth, an island, but having had to ride a boat to pass through the salty waters between the Dragon's Throat and the rest of Helovia, the mare could attest that it was true.  Overhead, a few palm fronds waved in a slight morning breeze.  No doubt the wind would die down as the sun's heat warmed the golden sands, but for now, it was actually quite pleasant to be awake.  She was certainly glad to have arrived in the dead of winter, for it would give her time to grow accustomed to the brutal warmth of the desert.

Ilios and Ampere had departed soon after reaching the shore of their headland, each drawn to their own duties.  She had followed their directions to reach the oasis, where she had settled in easily beneath a cluster of palms.  She remembered that she was surprised, last night, to find that she had been exhausted, not only from her journey from the Threshold, but from all that had plagued her since her departure from her homeland, as well.  It had been lovely to simply relax by the water, eating her dinner, and then lower herself to the ground to sleep.  It had been some time since she had felt safe enough to sleep lying down, and that in and of itself indicated that she had made the right choice by following Ilios to this - her new home.

Today, she awoke feeling refreshed and ready to face the world outside her little copse of palms.  She hadn't had the opportunity the day before to explore, or to meet any of her new family.  The thought filled her with equal parts hesitations and excitement, for if all who dwelled in these sands were as kind and welcoming as Ilios and Ampere had been, she felt that she would soon come to fit quite nicely into whatever niche she found in this herd.  Orange blossomed on her coat, galloping as a herd from flank to shoulder and then back again, as she pondered the possibilities of the day ahead, largely drowning out any green clouds of apprehension.  The mare began to wander along the edge of the oasis, hoping to find someone else lingering by the water on this gentle Frostfall morning.

With tired eyes the child awoke that morning with a lazy start. With wings folded close, Ru was reluctant to move the rest of her body. However – the sun had broken above the horizon line, rays piercing out to blind the youth instead. Without shade or shelter to ignore the sun’s call, she sighed reluctantly and lifted her head. Squinting, unaccustomed to the bright landscape ahead of her.

It was odd for the child to stay in one place. But the prospect of discovering what lay ahead of her in this new ‘home’ sparked an overwhelming desire to move. If not for the random flow of ideas and thought, she would have slowly made her way to some place: slow and groggy.

With an exuberant chirp she hoisted herself up, shaking off the sand and giggling. Prancing ahead with a bounce to her step, the bay dun filly darted towards the oasis. Momentarily halting her pursuit for rich, fertile lands and treasure – for a couple mouthfuls of cool water. Yes, the dear had needs after all… and the day was ripe for pillaging!

Her long, lanky limbs carried her across the sands and sparse grasses. Allowing her eyes to dart and graze the surroundings. She’d vaguely recalled traversing a desert at a young age, but the image was filled with gaps and fuzzy senses. The only thing she could truly recall was the stark, red sand – a heavy orange hue that rippled above like great mountains into the heavens. Except these mountains could move, they were subordinate to the winds and dust storms. The child grunted and tossed her head, shaking it briefly. Those had been awful, a million particles of sand pelting against her body – she shuddered at the thought, preferring to plow forward than relive the experience.

The sight of the oasis provided a hopeful encounter. Lush foliage, and clean water; she spurred on at a gallop with a squeal. Beautiful! Hugging the bulk of her wings tight and close to her body, she propelled herself faster along the fading sands; and among the undergrowth, until…

Her darkened limbs, marred by the haphazard markings beyond, drove into the cool liquid. Causing a ruckus, splashing and disturbing the early morn with squeals and sharp, rusted laughs. Preoccupied by the luxury of an oasis, to really notice the stranger skirting along the edge.

Enraptured by the coolness of the oasis, her wings fanned out from the shock. Flapping several times as the youth settled and pawed at the water.

The sun was rising, bright and warm against the ivory mare's coat. The air was cool, but the day promised to be warm, a hint towards the end of Frostfall. In the desert, the nights had been cold, but the days had been quite nice, even for winter; Xolani was glad that she had chosen to come to this land with Ilios. Otherwise, she might have been freezing somewhere by herself, or in the company of those who would do no more than look down upon her and laugh. Of course, she was not so plain anymore -- no, now she was a plethora of colors that danced and played all across her body. If only her parents could see her now!

On second thought, she did not particularly wish to see them. They had never been particularly accepting, not in the way that she thought that parents should be. They had been ashamed of her, and a small part of her hated them for breeding her inner self-loathing. She continued to walk, meandering her way along the edge of the oasis. She cast thoughts of her parents from her mind, for she had no desire to encourage that kind of negativity in her new life. Instead, she would focus on the oasis in all its glory. There was such a lovely little lake, beautiful, towering palms, and there were plenty of others around --

A blur of tan flew by her, followed by the sound of a splash; green tinged with blue colored the mare's coat with splashes of surprise that did not take any particular shape, and she turned to regard a young filly who was splashing in the oasis. Xolani cocked her head to the side, regarding the girl quizzically. It did not appear that she had been noticed, and for a moment she considered leaving the foal to her own devices. Something held her in place, though, and after a moment, she realized that she did not want to leave the child without any supervision. Bad things could happen to babes who went off on their own, and she had no desire to have the child drown just because she had chosen to walk away.

She waited on the shore, wondering if the little pegasus would turn to see her or if she would merely watch in silence, never to be noticed.

@Ru - sorry for the wait, I was trying to give it a chance to get more participants ;D

She giggled as her reflection warped in the water. Her pawing declined as her coral eyes viewed the surface for a moment longer. Briefly sensing her mother’s gaze in the orbs that stared back, infantile smile and all. With a heavy sigh she dipped her head, gathering the cool water. Drinking its essence with the slight burn of its frigid character. With a few more gulps to satiate her thirst, she stilled. That familiar feeling of being watched and observed crawled up her skin. Eyes shifted up to finally regard the crème figure standing beyond at the shore.

Ru snorted, wiggling her nose from the water when she pulled her head up. A light nicker exited from the youth, before she smiled and grinned happily. The filly bound towards the stranger, gallanting with the splashes to match her excitement. By now her coat and legs had all but darkened from the liquid, splotches and all. Ru came to stop, hopping in place before the mare with a splash and a giggle. Unabashed by her playfulness, she squealed and dipped her head in greetings.

She couldn’t tell if she’d captured a particular color etched upon the mare. It may have only been a lapse in perception as she made her way to the stranger. The soft features of the one before however, prove intriguing nonetheless. With locks that poured out with a long, silky abundance. Nothing like the tufts that lines her broad neck, or the stubble of a tail flicking now and then.

Ru tilted her head in thought, chirped, and quickly finished her greeting by poking the mare with her muzzle. Stretching out, aiming for her chest before darting back with a hop; wings shuffling just slightly out and in, anticipating, anxious to move and – perhaps, gain a fellow friend in the early hours of the morn.

@Xolani   eh, no worries. I apologize for my late reply. :F

The silent mare was struck by the realization that the filly was the first equine that she had met in Helovia who was not brilliantly colored in some manner. Though the child was far from the mare's perception of "normal" with her white, feathered mane and strange tail, she was a mixture of tans and ivory, offering a vague sense of comfort to Xolani. With a tilted head and a smile, she watched as the babe giggled at the water, dipping her head in to take a sip before bounding about playfully. Finally noticing the watching stranger, the child splashed her way to shore, stopping just shy of the mare's chest and peering up at her with a grin.

The simple dip of her head in greeting made the mare wonder if perhaps this child, like her, was mute - or perhaps she simply chose not to speak. Either way, Xolani immediately relaxed, comforted by the familiarity of the greeting. Her own head bowed politely, a pleasant smile of welcome on her face. A light orange of playfulness bounced its way onto her pelt, shaping the tiny pegasus filly playing in the water. A yellow equine joined the image, depicting Xolani's peace and joy.

Suddenly, the little filly jumped forward, bumping her muzzle against the mare's chest and bounding away, just out of reach. The movement drew a grin and a silent giggle from Xolani whose shoulders bounced up and down without a sound. She jumped slightly in place, splaying her legs as though about to charge; then she trotted forward, her neck stretched out and down, aiming to tag the filly on the rump. If the girl wanted to play, then play they would!
