The Oaken Riy
("oh-kin rih-yee")

The Land
The Oaken Riy is covered in great oak forests where the trees can grown up to 250 feet tall. The forest is sprinkled with wide meadows, covered in orange and blue poppy-life flowers. To the east and north, the Riy is edged by high white cliffs, offering a sheer drop to the rocky shores below, a dangerously fatal fall for any creature unlucky enough to topple over. To the south, the oak trees give way to forests of fir, spruce, and pine trees, forming the Everlasting Forest. In the west, the oaks become sparse and open up into a huge plain planted heavily with grasses and clover.

The Inhabitants
Three equine-esque species predominantly call the Riy and it's surrounding areas home.

The Horned
In the Native tongue: Kwalic ("kay-wahl-ick")
AKA: Kwalicorn

Description
The Kwalic is a sub-species of unicorn. Kwalics have an equine body that may resemble any number of breeds or types.
They carry three horns upon their head, the sizes of which are dependent on the individual. One is typically the largest, centered on the forehead between the eyes; the second in above that one, usually smaller; the third is a small curved horn at the end of the muzzle, known as the sabre-horn.
The base color of their coat follows the genetics of mortal horses and they can carry white markings of any shape or design. Their eyes, manes, and tails can be any color and often the tail will be tipped in red or yellow. Finally, the tips of a pure Kwalic's ears are always white.
Kwalics have solid hooves, rather than cloven, and horse tails, rather than lion.
Colors and genetics specific to the Kwalic are further discussed below.

Heart-Stones
The horns and hooves of each Kwalic appear to be made of a precious or semi-precious gem, or other rock or mineral. The qualities of these gems or stones are rarely entirely taken on by the hooves and horns of the Kwalic; for example, hooves that appear to be made of diamond are likely not was hard as real diamonds, although they could be (in this case, it could cause health issues as the hooves may not grind down as they should and would continue to grow and grow in length). The type of gem or mineral the hooves and horns resemble is know as a Kwalic's Heart-Stone and each Kwalic is classified based off of which stone they carry.

Classification of Hearts-Stones
(Classification name of Kwalic carrying that stone; special qualities)
This is not a comprehensive list, so if a specific stone you want is not here, please ask. Also, any magical qualities obviously would still require the proper magics to use within Helovia.
Common
- Agate (Gate Keeper; can come in many varieties or color and pattern)
- Garnet (Gairnéad; allegedly can produce internal heat in the coldest temperatures)
- Pearl (Lustred; delicate, easily breakable)
- Peridot (Olivine; none known)
- Rose Quartz (Rósach; none known)
- Smoky Quartz (Smoke Breather; often born with minor to severe respiratory problems)
- Howlite (Wolfquoise; none known)
Uncommon
- Amber (Ómra; may contain traces of preserved life inside, ie. bugs, plant matter, etc.)
- Amethyst (Violetta; often come from royal bloodlines, highly revered)
- Aquamarine (Aquariant; stone is nearly invisible underwater)
- Carnelian (Romanin; none known)
- Citrine (Citron; gives off a distinct lemon-y scent)
- Pyrite (Fire Foot; causes sparks when struck upon stone or metal)
Rare
- Alexandrite (Uralite; appears green in daylight, and red/orange in magical/fire light)
- Opal (Pelesant; catches smallest traces of light so appears to glow even in seeming darkness)
- Onyx (Night Stalker; resembles Obsidian and is therefore feared and hunted for)
- Sapphire (Corundium; none known)
- Diamond (Mante; extremely strong/hard)
- Tiger's Eye (Chatoyant; changes depnding on the angle viewed)
- Lapis Lazuli (Lazaward; often lovers of the night sky, stargazers)
Extinct/Mythical
- Moonstone (The Bright One; stone of the goddess)
- Obsidian (The Dark One; stone of the first brother god)
- Ruby (The Bloodied One; stone of the second brother god)

Genetics
Heart-Stone: The heart-stone carried by a Kwalic foal is most often decided by the mother, with the mother's stone being passed down, with a few uncommon exceptions. In the case of twins, it is usual for one foal to carry the mother's Heart-Stone and the other foal to carry the father's. This is random and not dependent on the sex of the foals. There are also very rare cased of one foal carrying a mix of both parents' Heart-Stones, such as two hooves  and a horn being one stone and two hooves and the other horns being the other, or even a swirling effect of both stones. In this case, health problems related to the hooves could be a concern as the different stones may take on different qualities and grow or wear down unevenly.

Coat Color: This follows the genetics of mortal equine coat color. All genes present in mortal equines are also present in Kwalics, however some genes may affect mane and tail colors differently. For example, the Silver gene does not make the hair turn white/creme, but instead turns the color a pastel version of itself.

Mane/Tail Color: The color of the Kwalic's hair can be any color on the visible spectrum.
Blue pigment is partially dominant over recessive red pigment:
Az - allele for blue, az - allele for red
AzAz - blue hair, Azaz - purple hair, azaz - red hair

Yellow pigment, not including tail tip color, acts as a modifier on the red or blue pigment and is recessive:
Ye - allele for non-yellow, ye - allele for yellow
AzAz yeye - green hair, Azaz yeye - brown hair, azaz yeye - orange hair

True yellow hair color can only be achieved through the Bui gene, which overtakes other colors:
BuiBui - yellow hair, Buibui - yellow streaks among regular hair color, buibui - non-yellow

There are likely mane genes affecting the tint or shade of the color that have yet to be pinpointed. There is definitely a degree of heredity to how dark, light, or saturated the color of hair can be, however. For example, a mare with dark blue hair and a stallion with neon green hair could produce a foal with dark hair, neon hair, or something in the middle.

Some coat color genes can affect mane and tail color as well:
Silver (ZZ or Zz - pastel shade)
Dun (DD or Dd - dorsal stripe may extend through mane and tail)
Gray (GG or Gg - mane and tail will fade to gray with age as normally occurs)
Tobiano, Splash, and other white pattern genes - may turn affected hair white as normal

Tail Tip Color: Red tail tip is dominant, no tail tip color (meaning the tip is the same color as the rest) is recessive. Yellow tail tips are also possible, but are caused by modifier gene.
Tip - allele for red tip, tip - allele for no tip color
TipTip or Tiptip - red tip, tiptip - no tip color
Am - allele for yellow tip, am - gene for non-yellow tip
Tip-- AmAm or Amam - yellow tip, tiptip Am-- - no tip color, Tip-- amam - red tip

White Markings: Markings roughly follow the genetics of mortal horse markings and are dependent on the size and type of markings of the parents.

Ear Tips: The gene for white ear tips is recessive and all purebred Kwalics are homozygous. Therefore, all purebred Kwalics have white ear tips. Kwalic mixes may or may not depending on the genetics of the non-Kwalic, or non-pure, parent(s).
