The princess had never seen the ocean before.

Waves crashed angrily against the sands beneath her hooves, a dull grey that reflected the blanketing clouds in the sky. The girl stared out to sea, her face unreadable, the wind whipping her mane about her face. The flicks of hair against her nape stung, but she almost welcomed it - at least it was something different to feel, and it had been some time since she had felt anything except boredom. She was watching a storm pass by over the turbulent waters; periodically, lightning would crack from the clouds and into the ocean and a soft roll of thunder would wash over her.

It was chillingly beautiful, in its way, and the girl wished that she could harness the energy of the storm for her own. How would it feel to hold the ability to bring death and chaos at her hooves, to be the wielder of destiny for whatever unsuspecting soul she passed over? How would it feel to be in control, for once, free to do as she pleased without thought or reason or consequence? But the storm wasn't truly free, was it? It was bound by the patterns of the wind, the shape of the shoreline, pushed and prodded this way and that by whatever new climate it came to. No, if she wanted power, she wanted it to be her own.

Ansgar sat silently by the princess's hooves, watching the frothing waves. She could not recall her bonded ever having been in so black a mood, so restless, so powerless. Worse, there was no reason for it, no trigger that had been pulled to send her ricocheting into darkness. The griffin was silent, almost pouting, devoid of her usually playful spirit. Själ was glad: had the cat-bird tried to cheer her, she would have done little but glower. Why the fuck did I come back? she asked through the bond. Ansgar did not deign to answer.

"Talk."

Electricity could be felt in the air as the golden stallion turned his back to the wind heading west towards the ocean. This had been one of the first places he had come across when he had mistakenly arrived her via portal thanks to one of this planet's gods. He had been searching for a way to wash the infection from the large wounds the ghastly bear god demon had inflicted him with, salt water and the ice cold had helped do the trick. While some had believed him to be crazy for standing neck deep in the frigid water it had helped to heal the wounds to the point where there was barely a mark on his otherwise perfect pelt. He had sustained many wounds over the years but thankfully few had left any noticeable marks.

Against the darkness of the sky and the deep blues of the ocean his bi-coloured orbs nearly skipped over the black silhouette standing against the wind with her back to him. If not for the billowing tendrils of hair and the potency of her scent he may have overlooked her thinking her just part of the scenery. The fae bore dual horns similar to those of his own with the exception of the colour and length, he had met few that shared the double set of weaponry. The only splashes of colour along her length was the peppering along her hide, a ghostly pale face and only a touch of colour to the bottoms of her pillars, otherwise she was as black as the ocean itself. Curiosity bloomed in the young stag's mind as to what a lady such as this would be doing out here in the midst of a storm? Perhaps it was ignorance that drew her to these shores when lightning could very well strike her dead at any moment... or perhaps this girl had some kind of death wish. Neither choice really interested him but for the hell of it he figured he might as well attempt to poke at the choice of better judgement.

"Some would say that standing there would likely strike you dead." He commented evenly as he closed the gap between himself and the filly leaving enough "personal space" between them. In all reality it was more of a safety buffer should the fae decide to strike out at his rather apparent presence.

The fae might have asked him why he had bothered to come over and reprimand her; in fact, she had turned with a scowl to do just that when she actually saw him. Her lips twisted into a frown, her brow creasing, but she did not speak, not yet - she only looked at him, intrigued in spite of herself. He was golden, golden all over, and he bore two horns in the same placement as her own. Having two such weapons, she had found, was a rare trait in Helovia. Hell, even her mother had borne only one. But it wasn't the horns that drew her attention - it was the way he seemed to shine, even under such dull conditions as these. And he had come over to talk to her, so he must have found something interesting about the young mare as well, right?

Or maybe he just thought she was an idiot and really wanted to tell her so.

Either way, she offered a mental shrug to Ansgar, who was peering at the stranger with a curious expression on her face. Ansgar had never seen her bonded in such a foul mood, and yet already it was lifting, just by the presence of some new stallion. A part of the griffin was jealous, but the larger part of her was relieved. Perhaps when they left the beaches behind, they would be able to have some fun again. The cat-bird crooned softly, lifting her rear from the sand to stalk between the two unicorns. Her slitted golden gaze sized up the stallion and, finding him an appropriate companion for her princess, offered an approving chirp.

Själ smirked slightly. "Well," she purred, her voice sounding surprisingly like her mother's had back in the days of the DarkEmpress and the Plague (not, of course, that the princess knew that), "I suppose that you'll be struck as well, then, won't you, standing this close." She thought his worries absurd; the storm was far out to sea, far enough that she felt no lingering electricity in the air around them. Of course, that didn't rule out the possibility of a lightning strike, but she liked to gamble. The princess laughed softly.

"If I'm a target for the storm, what brings you to the danger zone?"

"Talk."

Silence preceeded his lyrics for a moment or two while the fae came to realize that someone was speaking to her. Movement from the girl's feet drew his gaze down to find that of a small griffen protectively sizing him up. They were such curious creatures these companions, so loyal and protective yet for a reason he was not sure of. Any of them could live off somewhere with their own species yet they chose to travel with those otherwise grounded (well most of them). What purpose was there to attaching themselves here where they would never know their full potential? The concept was puzzling to the stallion and no matter of thought could seem so shed any light on it. Guess it was just one of those things that could not be explained, oh how he hated those things.

Drawing his head up to rest atop his shoulders he watched the mare's expression change as her eyes fell upon his frame. Words seemed to die upon her lips as her features instead twisted until a frown contorted such a young face into one as stormy as the sky itself. Still he waited for what he hoped would come knowing all too well that women could never be silenced for long. Those who he had met came with the personalities of fire and lightning, some could be sweet and caring while others you would be lucky to escape with your hide. Which would this young lass turn out to be?

As the feminine vocals finally touched his ears he pivoted them to face her, to catch each and every syllable. A soft chuckle of amusement rose in his throat as his comment was turned back on himself. "Aye, but there are far worse things than being struck by lightning my dear." He replied smoothly thinking back to all the magic he had been hit with over his short four years on the earth. Perhaps he had already been stuck by lightning and just did not remember it.. oh but the fire he could easily remember for that really hurt. "I was merely wandering through exploring these strange lands. What brings you this close to danger's door?"

The stallion watched her patiently as she bit back the immediate retort that came to mind (something along the lines of, oh, fuck off), finding herself intrigued by him and resolving to offer him a chance to keep her company.  When she finally did offer a response, sarcastic without biting, he chuckled.  The girl grinned mischievously - finally, someone who could have fun!

Her mood was remarkably odd, for today she was not the girl at odds with herself and her mother's legend; today, she was Själ, watcher of storms and tamer of seas.  She was not a half-child, lost in her own skin, but a grown mare, aware of who she was and what she wanted.  Somehow, watching the ocean storm, she had come to the conclusion that she could trust no one but herself.  She had tried to for years, and where had that gotten her?  She was more alone now than she had ever been, and no amount of moping was going to change that.  She wasn't going to run again - oh, no.  She was going to stay in Helovia, and she was going to make a name for herself.

It didn't matter that she didn't know how.

Regardless, a small smirk remained on her face as she sized him up.  "So there are," she acknowledged, and through her playful facade, a glimmer of truth shone through; if he were to look, he might see it in her eyes.  He might see that she had a past, that she had known things worse than a lightning strike, that she would rather be struck than to spend the rest of her life wandering Helovia, alone.

So why was the filly standing on the coast, staring at the storm?  Well, if she wanted to delve into the depths of her soul, she might have revealed that she was searching for herself, and she might have found some piece of her soul, standing watching the lightning crack and listening to the thunder roll.  Of course, no one did  that with someone they'd just met.  Instead, she fluttered her lashes.  "Oh, just enjoying the view."  In truth, she hadn't meant to sound so very flirtatious, but once it was said, she couldn't very well take it back.  "Besides, I laugh in the face of danger."  And she did, forcing aside the sudden embarrassment that bubbled within her.

"Talk."

Listening to the rolling thunder and the sound of distant rainfall was in its own way calming, well at least to him. How many nights had be spent alone listening to the thunder and just wishing that it would pass by? Many, but that was when he had been a young colt and had not known better. Now? Something as simple as thunder could not scare him now, there were much greater things to worry about such as the rift monsters. Speaking of which had everyone around her forgotten about how close they had all come to being killed by those things? Most of those others he had encountered would not stand a chance against one if one dare show its ugly face again. The filly before him for example wouldn't be able to fight it off, unless she was some kind of god like creature that he did not know about. Perhaps the world had already ended and he was just painfully oblivious to the fact. It would sure explain why everyone around here was willing to jeopardize their safety!

Doing a quick once over of the situation they found themselves in he quickly deemed them as completely screwed. All around them was sand and water, hardly anything that could be used as a weapon against an attack. Good thing he had his dagger, at least someone was prepared. Feeling the cold metal against the inside of his foreleg he managed to relax his nerves a little bit. It had come in handy while fighting the gods and he would have been devastated should he have lost it. Thinking back to his previous thought about how careless Helovians seemed to be it struck him that maybe they just didn't know any better. His world had been full of danger so you needed to be prepared but maybe here was not the same case. How could one world be so safe while another was in the state of constant war?

The mare's soft vocals drew him back once more to the present world. So she laughed in the face of danger did she, somehow this just confirmed his prior thoughts about the helovian race. Oblivious to the fact of the flirtatious nature of her comment he couldn't help but smirk with a toss of his head to hide his amusement at her laughter. "I don't think you would be laughing if you ever got to see my... my old home." He corrected still tending to want to use the present tense. "Remember those rift creatures? Try sharing accommodations with any of them." He joked quite amused with himself.

When Själ was born, it was in a cave on the side of a mountain somewhere beyond the borders of Helovia.  She had been raised there, away from everything and everyone.  The only equines in her tiny little world were herself and her mother, and, oddly enough, that had been enough for her.  Her mother had been cracked in the head, sure - especially now, after having interacted with many others who were normal, the girl could see that more clearly than ever - but she had been family.  And then she had left, shortly after the princess's weaning, only to go off and get herself murdered by some pegasus who'd been taken over by a god.

And the princess had thought that that would be the strangest thing to happen in Helovia.

Boy, was she wrong.

She had left this land behind, never intending to return.  What was the point, now that her mother was dead and gone?  Snö, the half-sister who had met her upon her arrival in Helovia, had not liked or wanted her; her father, wherever he was, probably knew as much about her as she did about him.  She had no family, no friends to speak of (or at least not the kind that she considered to be true friends, particularly not since they were prone to disappearance) - it was she and Ansgar against the world, and she had intended to go out and see the whole world.  But it had been empty out there, even more so than it was within the borders of this land, and she had found herself even more deeply unhappy.  So here she was, right back to where she'd started after her mother's demise.

And she hated it.

In any case, she had not been present for the Rifts' appearance in Helovia, and had heard only bits and pieces of stories from passersby on her travels.  She had certainly never met anyone who had come from the Rifts, and she was seized with a sudden excitement at the prospect.  "You came from the Rifts?" she asked, ignoring the point of his comment without realizing it.  She had turned to him, and now her golden eyes were trained eagerly on his face, her ears pricked towards him and even her body leaning ever-so-slightly in his direction.  "I'm from outside of Helovia, but I never thought --" she stopped herself, not wanting to sound too unknowledgeable about the universe.  Particularly not in front of this stallion who was not only from a foreign world, but who also happened to be quite the handsome one.

Now that she had really given him her attention, this fact above all else caught her attention.  She had known that he was golden - it was quite difficult to miss, actually - but had not quite noticed the way the color shined over taut muscles, the way each flicker of lightning flashed upon his horns.  Having realized this, the young mare felt even more embarrassed by her accidental comment before, though she was pleased to note that he had not seemed to notice it.  No more than a few seconds had passed while the princess processed this; for all he knew, she might have been trying to decide what question to ask first.  "You must be quite the stallion, then, to have avoided danger in such a place," she said with what she hoped was a pretty smile.  "What was it like?  Your home, I mean, not the dangerous creatures inhabiting it."

"Talk."

You came from the Rifts? Oh great what can of worms had he managed to crack open this time around he wondered in silence internally cringing at the thought. Would this new acquaintance turn out like all the others and shun him for those things that he could not control? Was it possible to eat the words he had just spoken and just drop the topic as quickly as it had surfaced? Preparing mentally for the internal explosion of vile comments that usually preceded this discussion the golden stag reluctantly tipped and ear to catch the next words that would flow from the pretty girl's mouth.

Much to his surprise instead of hatred and disgust pouring from the black filly there were a whole array of other emotions to pick through. Many he had learned to pickup on but other than the name he really had no idea what it felt like to experience such emotions. One thing that was for sure was the girl was sure eager to hear what he had to say about all this. A little rattled by the intensity of the situation he wasn't quite sure how to react. How were you expected to react when someone decided they didn't hate your guts? Surprised? Happy? Joyful? Blinking a couple times to clear the confusion from his eyes he was proud of his otherwise blank reaction to the girls exuberance. Maybe someday he would understand but for now he would just go with the flow and hope that someday some kind of knowledge would fall his way.

Home... what was home like? There was no easy way to answer that one for the emotion he felt to it was similar to how he felt right now, blank. It had been a place where he had been birthed and the place where he had learned just how cruel the world was. Hardy something that you wanted to start a conversation with. "Well there isn't much to describe really. It was a place of danger, you either learned to survive or you perished. There was no in between where safety existed, we had to do what we could to survive." He started feeling a little on the spot. "Some were better off than others but as for me I didn't stick around any one place too long to find out how safe it was. Things definitely did not look like they do around here, there is a lot more life." Taking the compliment with modesty the golden stallion finished his description. "What about you? What was your home like?"

Unlike many other Helovians, the girl had not been present to face the Rifts and all of the dangers that fell from their open wrath; and, despite her protests, she was, in fact, quite Helovian.  She was born of a Helovian mare, from (presumably) a Helovian stallion, and despite her birth on the outskirts of its borders, she had the same mannerisms and the same beliefs as many who inhabited the land.  Never before had she stumbled across one from quite so far away as to actually have fallen through a portal from another world.

Not wanting to appear too eager and, thus, childish, the princess cocked her head to one side, resting a hind leg easily upon the sand.  She waited patiently, her ears pricked towards the stallion, her attention taken from the storm that was just beginning to move off to the south.  The lightning and the thunder wasn't nearly as interesting as the stallion who had stumbled across her previously foul mood, after all, nor had they done anything at all to cheer her.  Kalona, on the other hand...

"My home?" she repeated rather stupidly as she awoke from the stupor she had fallen into as she listened to his description of home.  A pause followed, for what was she to say?  She had been born in a cave and had followed Mother to Helovia shortly thereafter; then she tried to go back to the cave only to find that it had never been a home in the first place.  "I don't really have one, I suppose," she admitted after a moment of awkward silence.  "I was born outside of Helovia in a cave in the middle of nowhere in particular, and I've been wandering ever since."  She shrugged, as if to show that the notion didn't bother her.  Liar.

"Talk."
