The woods sang to her. Brilliant, vivacious, colorful sounds filled the air. Joy was heard, yes, but also it was felt. It wound its way into her hairs, through her skin, spreading and seeping through the muscle, invading into her very bone. Her heart thumped in time with the rhythm, her ears flicked this way and that, taking in the noise, embracing it, welcoming back the magic that had been absent from her life. Too long, she thought, blue eyes looking through the woods. She knew this place well. Once, she had known every weaving trail, every winding vine of ivy. Not anymore. These woods still felt like an old friend but, as all things do, her friend had changed. Not in a bad way, or a wrong way, but they were different nevertheless. She could no longer close her eyes and weave through the trees fearlessly. Should she break into a gallop, she would surely trip on some rock that had not been there or some bush that had found new life. So she didn’t close her eyes, or gallop, or weave. She stood, overwhelmed with emotion.

Beneath the sound of joy, one thread echoed different than the rest. Dissonant and cold, out of tune and out of rhythm. It was a reflection of her heart in the music, perhaps; or, at least, a part of it. There was a thread in her heart, a muscle, a fiber, that was telling her she should not return. She didn’t belong, after all. She’d spent so much time away. Wouldn’t it be that all of her friends, much like this forest, would be foreign to her. Familiar, of course, but also… different. She would not be able to run to them with the same reckless abandon, would not be able to lean on them if she needed them, at least not right away, she assumed. Or, perhaps ever. Could life here be the same, when she had walked out on it so suddenly? Had she even remembered to say goodbye?

But it didn’t matter, really. The way the music of the gods invaded her very soul when she had crossed the borders was all she needed to know that this was really where she belonged. The queen- wait, no. She was a queen no longer, she reminded herself, stepped forward. One hoof after the other, slowly but steadily, the Sunshower carried on into the forest. The trees brushed against her, waving in time with her song. The leaves rustled gently, percussion to the melody of the birds and the insects. And then, on a whim, the queen added her own bit to the piece. A whinny fell from her lips, filling the air. Loud, confident, she announced her presence. Perhaps she would not be welcome; but then… perhaps she would. This was home, even if it hadn’t been for some time. A smile was on her lips. Life was good.

Some say you're trouble, boy Just because you like to destroy All the things that bring the idiots joy Well, what's wrong with a little destruction?

He is ever on the hunt.

Today it is a fresh one—but he cannot trace her scent, cannot pick up the greens of the Falls, the salt of the Edge, the chill of the Basin. He does not know her face, that sleek body of hers, marred and ruined by splashes of ugly white—she is no kin of the Throat. Who, then, is she, and what purpose shall she serve for him?.

Food? Prey? He is not sure yet.

Ka’Ora weaves through the trees, a grey shadow, and her eyes dance and twinkle with something. Master, listen, she pleads; the wind sounds different here, the whisper of leaves against leaves crooning a rhythm she can keep. There is music here, a tiny voice upon the wind, the creaking branches. It is faint but she is certain of it, for it causes her chest to soar, her gentle wing-beats to fall steady and light as she weaves the canopies above.

Master, of course, ignores her. His attention is not paid to the wind, however pretty it may happen to be that day. He is thinking of—

Food? Or prey?

He must decide.

“Miss?” he calls—adopting a certain lilt to the smooth rumble of his purring voice; he is trying something. Donning a hat, bearing the overcoat of a concerned sir.

He comes upon her from shadow; the sun is warm, descending slowly, for the days begin to lengthen and the basilisk can tell that spring is days away. “Miss,” he says again, coming close enough to see--blue eyes, once again.

(All of them, all of them blue eyes. Perhaps she is a harlot, as well?)

“It’ll be cold soon,” he says, genial, something reproving in his voice, “Frostfall nights do are not kind to a lone traveller. Do you have a…den to return to? A friend who will meet you?”

Competition? Desert? Someone who will come looking for the corpse?

He wonders if he is hungry; he wonders which kind it is. He looks into those startling blue eyes with earnestness. He is glad to be here; he wants to help.

Brisa & Hikari

Traveling through the threshold had on any particular day never been one of the easiest things for the pale mare but she was doing it. For as long as she could remember she had always been skitsy about meeting new people and the whole speel, but with her rank she felt it was now part of her duty to at least try. Hikari managed to make it all the more difficult as she tried to explore every nook and cranny always excited to see new things. Only problem was they were supposed to be looking for new arrivals to bring back to the Falls not looking at the new growth of the forest and all the rest of it. Finally after spending more than an hour and only getting about a mile into the threshold Hikari's new place of travel would be from atop her head, much to her disappointment.

Ears perked as the loud whinny pierced through the trees causing her natural instincts to jump slightly at the suddenness of it all. Wait a minute.... Stopping with flared nostrils the mare tried to pick up the scent of the foreign stranger who seemed not to be a complete stranger after all. No, it couldn't be... Kahlua? It had been so long... but where had she gone for all this time? Was this really her? Letting out a shrill whinny in response the pair was off in search for their long lost friend.

Pushing off in a cloud of dust the mare expertly wove herself around the trees following the familiar scent until the black and white body came into view. Throwing her head up as her hooves scrambled to stop her momentum Hikari had to hang on for dear life so not to be sent scrambling for her own balance. Clearly unimpressed and not knowing what was going on she yipped a couple times but the sound was barely heard by her bonded who still couldn't believe that Kahlua stood there in front of her. "Kahlua?!?" She called out still trying to get over the surprise and excitement that was pounding through her veins.

Miss, a voice calls. The que-, no, Sunshower, she reminds herself again, stops. Ears perk, eyes scan the horizon steadily. She had no fear. At least not now. This place is home, and home is not frightening. Except for… a horn. Her ears flick and the music skips a beat with her heart and she decides- friend… or foe. Were the politics here the same? The unicorns of the north ever clambering for supremacy, unity of their species? The Sunshower did not know, could not know. A breath, scent inhaled, musky stallion- did he smell of the Basin? She didn’t even know what it smelled like anymore. It was a distant memory by now. The chill in the air all she could bring to mind.

From above, a downy blue feather wafted. Khan circled, watchful. The eyes of a dragon never rest, the queen had learned. He had saved her many times during their absence. She made up her mind not to be frightened.

Cold… nights… he mentions, and she looks around, almost as though it was the first time she was seeing the snow and the sun drifting towards the horizon. Yes, perhaps it would be cold. She bobbed her head genially in agreement. “I had many friends once,” she said, almost placing a question mark at the end. Unsteady, uncertain, unsure how to proceed. Only once had she been an entrant to Helovia. Only once had she had to explain why she was here. She had always been on the other side. Drawing the new ones in, bringing them home, welcoming them. “I doubt any of them here remember me now, though,” she blabbered on, falling back on the one thing she was good at even when she was nervous.

Her eyes drifted slowly down towards his leg, examining but not judging. Curious. Khan cawed once, still vigilant, but not yet reactive. Patience was a virtue he had worked hard at. Absently, she began pawing at the ground, digging at a small stone that was lodged there- an old habit that seemed so familiar. Where to start? There was so much to say. “I was queen of the Edge once,” she muttered, as though it helped her case. She had always wanted to share too much. “I ran away, but I’ve come home… its hard to be away from home for too long, you kn-“

Words cut short and the Sunshower sharply turned her head. That was her name in the air, spoken by another, a voice- she knew it. Instinctively she cried out, all thoughts of the stone-legged stranger drifting from her mind for that second. A gray body in the woods, a voice, a scent, so familiar. So much like home. “Brisa,” she whispered, just a breath, as her pawing stopped, eyes wide in disbelief. Was that happiness in her old friend’s voice? It couldn’t be… could it? But it was. Kahlua returned the favor. “BRISA!” she cried more vibrantly, hooves scrambling to take her closer, to throw her neck across her friends shoulders, to exhale so deeply that she thought she might collapse through the floor. She knew it… she was home.

Some say you're trouble, boy Just because you like to destroy All the things that bring the idiots joy Well, what's wrong with a little destruction?

What a bright little sunray she is.

She speaks—and speaks, and speaks, and Reginald’s eyes widen, his brows rising as the words tumble from her (admittedly pretty) little lips. He normally detests such divulges of speech: irksome, womanly things it is, for someone to bare themselves so quickly, so willingly, and always about absolutely nothing. He forgives this woman, easily, because, for once, the things that tumble from the lips of a whore find themselves useful.

The former Queen of the Edge. Something tightens in his haunches.

He watches and listens—dutifully, regarding her with a complacent mask, for her demeanor is light and breathy, a bubble floating upon the sunset air, the now-mild chill of a dying season. He imagines her—Queen, sitting regent upon a throne of salt and seashells, her hair adorned and her eyes dripping with the crystalline tears of a fairy. It is a caricature of a Queen, surely. He knows they are not the ethereal spirits of a child’s fancy, as many fillies might believe. They are women of state; they must be hard of tongue, forward of mind and intent. There is a doubt lingering in the back of his mind, that such a frothy individual could have lead a nation (under the murderous shadow of the Moon, no less).

He wonders if she’s a liar. He wonders if she’s insane, especially with her talk of running.

His smile is dazzling and handsome, set as it is against dark lips. “Indeed,” he answers, for he knows what it’s like to be away from home for long (it is essential that he agrees, to put her mind at ease), “Perhaps, I could—“

He is interrupted.

By dessert? he wonders.

It is another mare—this one marred by dapples, but it’s is a slight disfigurement, nothing drastic to mar the otherwise full body that is useful indeed. Even better; this scent clearly hails from green hills and sparkling waters, and the tip of a lion’s tail curls ever so much, so pleased he is with the appearance of a second helping.

“There, now,” he says with a sly playfulness, those grey eyes resting upon the painted lady of insanity, “You don’t seem to be forgotten at all, do you?”

Old friends. He’ll watch for some time, this history lesson playing out in front of him as the mares embrace; Ka’Ora lands nearby, perched high in the treetops, watchful, alert. She smells scales. “Kahlua,” he breathes, Brisa. A pleasure. It seems you won’t be so lonesome after all, huh?”

Brisa & Hikari

It had been months, no years since she had seen her dear friend here in the likes of Helovia but what had made her leave in the first place? She knew all about the happenings before the invasion and some from afterwards thanks to Aly but as to Kahlua's disappearance she knew nothing. Why had she gone in the first place? Had they all done something to drive her away? Had she purposefully left them? Gah there were all too many questions and not enough time to manage to process all the information swimming before her. Clearly there was much that she had missed upon her arrival for by the time she was able to peel her eyes away from her painted friend a stallion had made an appearance as some point or another. Scanning him over quickly she deemed him a stranger but not a threat to either of them but a likely recruiter here to try and steal Kahlua away for himself. Well tough luck buddy for she was not letting Kahlua out of her sight ever again!

An excited squeal leaves her lips as she moves to meet Kahlua half way in their warm embrace clearly too excited to look the professional she felt she was supposed to be right now. Not too much could sway her from her cautious, shy self but leave it to either of the other two musketeers to bring her out of her shell. "Kahlua!!! I can't believe its you!! I have missed you soo much!" She said joyfully pulling back for a second to study her friend's face. How was she? Was she hurt? Where had she gone? Oh what the hell did any of that matter she was back, she was back!!

After a couple minutes or hours she managed to pull herself back together to address the stallion who was likely believing them to be partially psychotic by now. "Likewise." She said simply with a slight dip to her head so Hikari was not going to get too ruffled by all the excessive movement. "Sorry, I didn't catch your name.." Glancing a look over to Kahlua she wondered if she might be able to fill in the blank.

Not forgotten. A reassurance from the mouth of a stranger and the words of a long-lost friend. She didn’t know the stallion, but she decided already that she liked him. Even so, thoughts of him were miles away as she landed in the warm embrace of her dappled other third. Only one third missing and she was whole again. Alysanne, she thought, eyes drifting westward, looking far off into the distance, where she knew the woods of the Edge were located. Would Aly be there still, or perhaps even farther beyond in the Falls? Was the Edge even there still? The gods were so finicky, so prone to changing. How much of this land was different than everything she had known? She didn’t bother to think over it too much. There was too much going on in the here and now to be bothered about what-ifs and wonders.

“I missed you too, I have so much to tell you, I’m so sorry for leaving you,” she cooed in response, nuzzling closer and then separating as Brisa stepped back as well. She inspected her friend, finding her more or less as she had been before the Sunshower had left, with the exception of one addition. The queen smiled and nodded towards the little kitsune, a joyous question in her eyes. When? How? Name? Personality? There was much to find out. Hopefully there would be enough time to do so. The Sunshower had no plans on leaving again soon.

“I suppose not,” she babbled in response to the stallion that she had almost forgotten for a moment, her head turning back around to see him. Stepping back reluctantly to allow him to become part of the conversation again, the painted girl beamed from ear to ear. “Yes, forgive me as well,” she added in response to Brisa’s comment. Names, formalities. “I’m lucky to have such a wonderful friend. I hope you have someone as important in your life.” The wish was genuine, if somewhat prying.

From above, the feathered blue drifted down to settle upon the Sunshower’s back, wings unconsciously flapping in time with nature’s music, as he continued to watch the scene unfold silently.

Some say you're trouble, boy Just because you like to destroy All the things that bring the idiots joy Well, what's wrong with a little destruction?

There is a bond between these two, a thick one, sugary and sweet, sticky, the sparkling icing atop a quaint chocolate cupcake; the sprinkles are shaped like stars. The basilisk leans on one haunch—wondering if it would be worth it to sink his fangs into such a thick layer of frosting. His teeth will surely ache.

Is he bothered? Yes, in all his blunt honesty. Slowly, surely, he is becoming bored of these sweet things, this sugary ritual between two clearly silly women. The grey one (Brisa) is loud, a shrill harpy screaming her pleasure; Kahlua the blue-eyed, the fairy queen of the Edge (he can barely keep himself from snickering) certainly dazzling in the tempo of her mood. The ghost of the laughter lays upon his lips, keeping his smile taut and true—genuine, easy. The game becomes easier with practice.

Sorry, I didn't catch your name..

His brows rise mildly. “I am Reginald,” he says with a smooth tongue, molding his name with utmost care, “of the Dragon’s Throat.” He makes a quick note in his head—that these ladies know of his identity, and that he should keep this in mind, for the future. It is not a light thing to be given, to be thrown about, just in case. Most times he prefers the shadows of obscurity—but sometimes, sometimes, the call of social niceties demand such gestures. There is a piece of him—small, yet acknowledged—that bemoans his earlier decision, and wonders if it’s too late to eat them, now. But, agh, they know his name.

I hope you have someone as important in your life.

He is thankful, with every fiber of his being, that he does not.

Abraham, Macaria, Father. His daughters, Oizys, Enyo, Merlin—the fine slope of Shida’s ass. He knows, deep within, these things could be discarded easier than one would expect, and his heart would beat, his breathing would stay even, and he would trudge on, forever attempting and failing to satiate an insatiable appetite.

Harpy-song cuts through the air; these thoughts bring Ka’Ora great pain. Reginald’s ear cocks against his bonded’s keening, and that is all the attention he gives her.

His smile is warm honey in Kahlua’s eyes, his silent response to her dearest wish. He cocks his head, peering at the ladies from behind a dark, straggly curtain of mane. He is rakish. “I don’t suppose you fine women would need an escort now, between the two of you,” his phrases are polished, his voice warm, warm, dripping with something (they call it friendship), “although I would be honored to walk with the two of you home, if you would care to suffer my presence for a bit longer?”

He drops the word—home--to see what it does to the queen.

Brisa & Hikari

Managing to keep her focus for the needed amount of time to learn of the dark stranger's identity she offered a kind smile in return. While he may look a little sketchy on the outside so far he definitely seemed to be a gentleman. "It's nice to meet you Reginald. Since you already know my name I will introduce my friend here." Motioning over to Hikari who had jumped down from her head to perch carefully a top of her back. "This is Hikari, and we are both of the Hidden Falls."

Looking over see a flash of blue next to her a new smile renewed the one already upon her face at the sight of Khan. She remembered the little dragon fondly and gently extended her muzzle to him in her version of hello. "Hikari, these are my friends." She commented silently unsure if the little pup could make anything of it just yet or not. The kitsune must have heard something for the response she got was a happy wag of her tails and a soft yip of excitement. Pleased that their bond was growing continually stronger the pale mare returned her focus to the conversation at hand. Reginald had kindly offered to accompany them home, but until now that thought had been the farthest from her mind. Kahlua had always been a part of the World's Edge until her departure. Would she want to return there or would she chose to come home with her, or even Reginald for that matter?

Reaching over gently to touch her soft muzzle to Kahlua's neck to get her attention she cleared her throat before speaking. "Kahlua? Would you like to come home with Hikari and I?" She asked hopefully. "I mean unless there is somewhere else that you would rather be." She added to make things fair for Reginald as well to be included in the decision. It would be hard to see her go with someone else but if that was her choice as a friend she needed to respect that. They had so much that they needed to catch up on and doing so from a distance would be that much harder. Turning to Reginald she nodded her thanks. "It would be nice if you would join us wherever Kahlua decides to go."

“Oh, well, yes, um, you see…” came the Sunshower’s intelligible response. “Yes, um, home,” she continued to stutter, suddenly shifting to and fro as though she did not know how to stay still. Home, in her own mind, had meant one thing- Helovia. Huge, sprawling, distant… safe. Home in the mind of Brisa, Reginald… Home to the Hidden Falls, as Brisa had stated. Home? It had never been hers, but if history had not changed too much, then many of her friends would be there. Kaj, for instance. Good or bad to see him? She didn’t even know. They had parted on bad terms, she supposed. A year and some absence wouldn’t have helped that. Archibald, perhaps would be there. A plus, maybe. He would understand? And what about the rest of her friends? Resplendence, Alysanne, Evangeline, Aaron, Destrier… Names, lists, miles long. Friends or foe, now that she had left them?

And then, that other name, one she had tried to forget, but really, how could she, rolling around in the back of her mind, always there, always lurking, always… what? Always a lead weight tied to her hooves? How could she even say that? She had never taken responsibility, never tried to really be a mother to the girl, and yet, there it was, still haunting her thoughts, her dreams, dragging up fear while she still tried to stutter through an answer. Isopia, it called, her mind or the gods? The God of the Earth? She shuddered. Would he hate her for what she had done? Perhaps not too much… the music around her still sang…

“Yes, um, well. Yes. You see, pause. “Well, no.” More pause. “Well, yes, no… you’re right.” As if that was clear. The Sunshower took a deep breath, closed her blue eyes, and listened to the gentle rustle of Khan’s feathers as he shifted on her back. Breathe, he had taught her. Breathe, and be calm. She tried.

“Home would be nice,” she decided finally, not sure if it was the truth or something else, but it was at least an answer that didn’t involve stuttering and shifting. She opened her eyes again, a smile turning up one corner of her mouth- a thanks to Brisa, a question to Reginald. Either way, before she could change her mind, she set off to walking. She had been gone, but not too long. She still at least knew the general direction of the Falls. Home, she thought again, trying to make it real in her mind. She was back.
