Tae, technically, was not as alone as Zero. At her side, at almost all times, were two steadily growing black hounds. The hellhound and the timber wolf were like silent sentinels who followed her even more closely than her own shadow seemed to. But their minds were sharp and cunning and almost never playful. She didn't fault them for that, and nor did she necessarily encourage playfulness. As their pack leader, she could show no weakness, could never let them have the advantage. That included in jest.

Tae had never really minded it much. At least ... until Grusha left.

It made no sense to Tae, no matter how many times she thought about it. If Grusha was sent away on some secret mission, she would have told Tae. If she was being punished well.. for what? Grusha never did anything that Tae hadn't, and so if one twin was being outcast as a penalty, surely she would be too. That, and there was no way either Mother or Father would do that to them. Family meant to much...

-and

and

- Mother was gone too.

Had they gone together?

Well. That was what the mandible-marked filly was going to find out. And if anyone would know, it would be Zero. He seemed to have Ampere on retainer at all times. There was no way she could go somewhere without him knowing about it.

And thus her search for her big brother began.

"Zeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrroooooooooo" She called, her tiny voice bouncing off the cascading reddish walls of the rock formations around her. Both Mal and Hel bore this patiently, but their canine voices did not raise to accompany hers. What did he normally do during the day? Tae had no idea - she spent all of her days (most of them anyways) with Grusha, getting into trouble, napping, or eating. She had no idea where to even begin to look for her lightning marked sibling, but the Throat wasn't that big, was it?

Yes. Yes it was.

Well, she would just keep going until she found him.

 "Oh Zerrrrrooo-"

A year from now we'll all be gone

All our friends will move away

And they're going to better places

But our friends will be gone away

Eventually, he had to go home.

It had been nice, seeing Iso, but Zero knew that sooner or later he would have to return to the Throat. Even if Ma wasn't there the boy still had family, sisters to take care of, sisters who were young and needy and would doubtless be confused by their mother's sudden departure. And even though he felt like it, Zero wasn't a child anymore. He was two, an adult, and he couldn't just hide from the things he feared. Tae and Grusha needed him, so it was time for him to be grown-up and brave.

So he went home, collected Squishy, and set out to find his sister.

Had he known just how perplexed Tae was he might have come home sooner. As it was he found his sister beneath a low-hanging sun, her small body a dark blight against the sloping red hills. He saw her before he heard her, and for a moment he paused, uncertain, a sudden dread falling over him at the prospect of telling his sister that Ma's not coming back for a while. So when her voice reached him - Zeeeeeeeeeerrrrooooo! - it was with no small amount of reticence that he put on a smile and prepared himself for the worst.

"Tae! Over here!"

The Lightning's son took off at a trot, picking his way down the slope to where his little sister stood. As he approached he noticed the two (wait, two?) wolves at her side; as always he avoided them, unsure of how to feel about his sisters' companions. Why did they have to do that? A part of him knew that there was something about Tae and Grusha that he'd never understand, and that bothered him. Still, Zero felt his smile soften as he neared his weird, mandible-marked baby sister, because no matter what she was family, and for the boy who'd felt so alone it was nice to remember that he still had that, even if Ma was gone.

"Watcha doin' all the way out here, little ghost?" Zero reached out with bright white teeth, aiming to pull playfully at Tae's forelock. "Where's Grush, huh?" He looked around, suddenly curious. "I don't think I've ever seen you two apart before."

He wished it could just stay like this, that he could play with her and smile and everything would be normal- but it wasn't. With another nip the boy stepped back, sunbeam eyes growing dim as he looked down sadly on his sister's face. "Tae... we gotta talk. I have to tell you something, and Grusha, too." Again he looked around, as though expecting the second twin to burst from the sand. Which wouldn't surprise him, honestly.

The sisters were weird, but they were also his.

Tae! Over here!

Ha. Success. Tae dared a small grin and began to methodically plod towards where she could see the dark streak that was her brother, moving over the sands. He wasn't flying, of course, and so out of some sort of weird respectfulness (because it wasn't as though Zero had ever actually told her to not fly around him..) she remained on the ground.

As their mother's nickname for her slid off of his tongue, she felt her body bristle. As it did, her magic took over and the outer edges of herself seemed to bleed away as she indeed became a little ghost. Quickly she tried to rein in the anxiousness that was suddenly bubbling up in her small developing chest, and she managed a weak smile. However as soon as Zero continued that smile faded and any control she had over her emotions evaporated. Where's Grusha, huh? She became nearly entirely see-through and the strength it took not to cry was almost too much. Her lip trembled and her pale eyes grew large and moon-like.

She said nothing as her brothers teeth gently clamped down on her white forelock, although it did help to steady her appearance slightly.

Tae... we gotta talk

At this, the two black hounds at her side rose and bristled, their hackles raised. They could feel the panic that shot through their bonded like a streak of lightning, and while they aggression wasn't necessarily directed at Zero, they couldn't certainly tell that he was the one who had caused the feeling inside of Tae.

"Quit." The mandible-marked filly demanded harshly of the canines at her side. Immediately they quieted and sat down.

"I don't know where Grusha is." The lone-twin replied softly.  "So I guess it's just you and me."

Oh how right she was.

A year from now we'll all be gone

All our friends will move away

And they're going to better places

But our friends will be gone away

He'd done or said something wrong, that much was obvious. The nice thing about his sisters was how easily he could tell they were upset, since they literally changed into spirits and skeletons (so weird) when their emotions ran high. Zero frowned as Tae's edges flickered, then faltered, then began to disappear entirely. Desperate confusion filled the boy: he would have expected the thought of Grusha to calm the twin, not upset her more. Had they fought? Did he have to track the skeleton down and make her apologize?

Man, he didn't want to. That sounded like it should be Ma's job. But Ma was gone, and Gaucho was busy, and Zero was the grown-up now.

Zero tried not to flinch as the young wolves suddenly stood, their angry glares fixed on him- and then he tried again as Tae snapped at them, her voice so harsh. Weren't the dogs supposed to be her friends? Zero thought of Iso, or Själ, or Mesec or Zahra or really anyone else he knew with a companion. Had any of them ever seemed so angry with their friend? Well, yes, one of them had. The more he thought about it the more he realized Ma had never once been nice to Kygo in front of the boy. Is that where Tae's attitude had come from? Watching their Ma?

Had Ma somehow done the opposite of everything she'd wanted, and encouraged her children to be mean to their companions?

He didn't want to think about it too hard. That would mean Ma'd done something wrong, and right now the boy's faith in his mother couldn't afford to take anymore hits.

Then Tae decided to explain her sadness, and Zero felt his smile fall. I don't know where Grusha is. So I guess it's just you and me.

Well, shit.

To Zero's credit he recovered quickly. He smiled again, silver eyes bright as he lowered his head to look into Tae's eyes. "Oh, 'course, silly me!" the boy began, trying to sound cheerful as his mind struggled to come up with a plausible story to feed his sister. Inside he was frantic - how could Grusha be missing, too? But the boy was so exuberant normally, that on him anxiety just looked like a little extra excitement. Besides, there was no way he was going to let Tae know how worried he was. He'd do anything to keep her from feeling that same sinking grief which had filled him these past weeks. Anything to get that sadness off her face.

"That's what I was gonna tell you, actually. See, Ma had to go away for a little bit on a top secret mission." Yeah, that sounded good. "An' she took Skels with her 'cus she said... uh... well, she would'a been lonely otherwise. But!" he continued cheerfully, "She wants you to know that she loves you a whole ton and that she knows you're extra brave and strong, an' that's why she needed you to stay an' help me take care of the Throat, ok?" It was a desperate play, a stupid lie, one that would fall apart quickly were either Grusha or Ma to return, but the boy told it with a sincere gusto, his expression carefully fixed in an encouraging smile. If Tae bought his story it would give him time to hunt down the other twin.

As Zero's tone changed, so did Tae's entire countenance. Her head lifted, her eyes widened and glistened, and something like awe and hopefulness crossed her dark features. The girl's ears perked forward intent on Zero and what he might have to say next, because maybe it was-

(hope)

maybe they weren't-

maybe it would all be alright-

..top secret mission..

Tae had briefly considered that Grusha had been called away for something, but had dismissed it quickly. After all, Gaucho and Ampere knew better than to try and separate the two of them. And besides, Grusha would have broken any secretive protocol for Tae. Surely she would have told her twin what she was up to? But hearing it from Zero was far different from coming up with the idea in her own tiny skull. Now, it seemed to make sense.

Remember when she would disappear, and then surprise you with a bunch of new bones? She thought to herself, nodding silently. That she hadn't said anything about. Maybe wherever she was with Mother ... maybe it was like that? A good sort of secret mission? And that she was with Mother seemed to make more sense to the girl as well.

"Oh." She almost squeaked, and as Zero mentioned that they were to take extra good care of the herd, the mandible-marked filly nodded enthusiastically.  "Okay!" Warm relief flooded her veins and as it did, it pulled her body back together. She was a whole-girl again, normal(ish) - at least as normal as Tae could ever look.

The black canines are her side relaxed visibly. Mal even lowered himself into a laying-down position and began to lick the bottom of his paws. Hel, much more deligent than his common cousin did not, though he too appeared to relax and his gaze softened and fell away from Zero.

"So..." Tae began, her excitement waning and giving way to something like slight confusion.  "What do we do now?"

Just you and me, big brother. It's just you and me.
The only difference was, Tae thought that it was only temporary.
