The little lightning princess wandered through the falls, a slight frown marring her pretty face. Mother had disappeared again, leaving her daughter to wander the Falls without any company. The ivory mare seemed to be gone a great deal of late, leaving Aleta to wonder where she was and why. Why was she leaving her family here in the Falls, and why wasn't she taking her daughter with her? The Transcended and her daughter used to go on excursions to the Wilds every few days, but now the girl was lucky to see Sohalia once or twice in a fortnight. For days now, she had skulked in the shadows, having been historically too shy to make many new friends, pouting and waiting for Mother to return.

Father was busy being Czar, and the little lightning child had decided early on that she did not wish to bother him as he worked. She was sure that his role in the herd was of the utmost importance, and though she longed to be selfish and beg for him to stay with her and Mother, she could not bring herself to condemn the rest of the Falls to a life without Kaj in it. Even if it meant that she herself was sentenced to a life of solitude until Mother returned or she made a new friend. The girl snorted; at this point, she wasn't really sure which was more likely.

Aleta had blossomed in the past few months into a lovely young filly. Though somewhat smaller and frailer than other foals her age, she had begun to grow into her lanky legs and fill out her tiny frame. Her mane and tail were of an awkward length at present, but the girl hardly noticed; she did not see her reflection often, preferring to avoid to crashing noise of the falls against her sensitive ears and the churning current against her delicate skin. Thought she was not yet able to fly (damn you, wings), her flight feathers were beginning to bloom on her wings. One day soon, she would be soaring through the skies with the rest of the pegasi. She wondered what the world would look like then.

Finally, she could no longer stand to walk in circles and listen to herself think. She set off at a resolute trot, her half-grown tail swishing irritably behind her. If Mother wasn't going to be around, then at least she could spend time with her father. Perhaps he would even allow her to help with the herd. She nodded to herself, pleased. That would give her something to do with her time! "Daaaddy!" the girl called as she neared one of her father's usual spots. "Daaaaaaaaaddy!"

"Talk."

Kaj
the Aurelight

Kaj had never considered the burden of his title to be oppressive. He had flourished for many years beneath its shadow, happy to serve his herd and and his family. That was until he'd built a real family of his own, until the lack of time kept him from their sides. He despaired over how quickly Aleta grew, the way she flourished and grew into her skin without him being there at all moments like he desired to be. He loved her as he loved no other being on the earth, and where the women of the past had broken and defiled his heart, Aleta was the balm that soothed and restored it. He had never known or experienced the deep, unwavering love he held for his daughter. Beneath the golden light her presence brought into his life, the shadow of his title grew ever longer. No longer did he have to sleep alone at night, as he had since he'd left the old herdlands when he was barely three years old. He had Aleta to return to instead of a sad empty coven of trees, and sometimes Sohalia as well. With all the good the pair brought into his miserable, lonely life, Kaj began to doubt.

A soft, childish voice rang out, a whining cry for attention. Kaj gave a brief, apologetic smile towards Resplendence and turned to exit her little cavern. Aleta's voice was unmistakable, and perhaps all fathers felt that way, but Kaj would not ignore her beckoning. Muscular frame pushed forward faster into the underbrush, long trot carrying him towards the distant sound of her voice. Where is Sohalia? It crossed his mind briefly, for Aleta was not the only observant force of their family. He knew she had been regularly disappearing, but had no power to stop her nor any desire to confront her about it. They were friends, good friends, but he would not chain her to him. He only despaired over how it affected Aleta, not wanting her to ever doubt the love her parents had for her or the lengths they would go on her behalf. And if running to her every beck and call helped assure her that she was not lone, that she was loved beyond her imagination...it was no contest or hardship for Kaj. He would drop everything for his baby girl.

"I'm here, engeltje," he called out in response as he drew nearer, shoving a blossoming branch out of his way and watching with amusement as Aleta wandered around calling out for him in a long string of consonants. Trotting closer he paused, used to not touching her skin now, and blew a puff of air towards her face in his trademark 'kiss' for her. He always let her come to him, deciding her limits of touch and when she desired it to happen. "How are you my dear?" Clearly bored in some way if her adorable whining was any indication, but he would allow her to ramble her answer on her own.

Engeltje means little angel

In truth, the little lightning girl didn't doubt Mother's love, not really. The ivory mare was there for Aleta when it mattered, reassured her of the adoration that she held in her heart for her daughter when she was present - it was just that Aleta had not had to be without Sohalia for any length of time before. She had always had her mother to explore with, to play with, to talk with -- never before had she been left so entirely to her own devices. In a way, she almost appreciated it - Mother was offering her the freedom that she had so desperately longed for - but on the other hoof, freedom was so... boring.

No, life was much better with a family to share it with, and in lieu of pestering Mother, Aleta was determined to offer her childish assistance to her father. Since birth, she had always been close to her father, who had offered her shelter from the elements when she was just out of the womb. He had been understanding of her illness, offering a deep and profound acceptance of who she was and the limitations that she faced. He was her rock, and she longed to be his shadow, even though Mother said that Kaj was perfectly capable of ruling without her assistance. "Your father is a wonderful Czar," Mother had explained to her one day after the girl had complained of missing the golden stallion, "but sometimes, it's important that you let him be a Czar."

Well, Mother might have had good intentions, but Aleta was sure that her doting father would allow her to tag along if she only asked. She didn't want to get in the way, but she was tired of being left behind all the time. Besides, there was so much that he could teach her, not only about the Falls, but about all of Helovia!

Daddy's warm voice pricked her ears, guiding her towards his winged form. The stallion was clearly amused at her childish antics, and she giggled gleefully as he offered his customary air-kiss. She snorted in return, prancing happily in place as her own breath mingled with his. "Daddy!" she exclaimed, eyes bright with excitement. "I'm bored. But that's okay - I know what to do! I thought I could help you with your Czar-things and then you would finish early today and then we could play!"

"Talk."

Kaj
the Aurelight

His little angel had been such a hard first child to have, and objectively Kaj knew that. However he practiced the trust exemplified in Maren, and he believed with an utterly unshakeable faith that the Gods had planned for Kaj to be Aleta's father. He would protect her from the elements as stubbornly as he would defend her from the misunderstanding of her peers and age-mates. To him, there was nothing wrong with her. Maybe her skin was like one giant exposed nerve, it did not make her less than anybody else. She was beautiful, and precious, and so endearingly resilient and kind in the face of such unfair amounts of pain. If he could wrap her in the down of his feathers and cocoon her until she was ready to face the world unharmed, he would. But Kaj knew she felt the wind and the earth the way her mother did, yearning for adventure and freedom that he would allow her, even when his skin prickled with constant nervous energy. He tried not to be an overbearing father, tried not to check in on her every hour in a way that would surely choke her. In some ways his duties as a Czar helped in that aspect, in others they could sometimes make him sloppy.

Nevertheless he believed he was meant for fatherhood. He doted on Aleta, tried to be fair and just when she required correction or punishment. And through it all he adored her above all else. So what she asked for, if benign, she generally received.

His heart soared as it did every time she ever called him daddy, her own air-kiss tickling pleasantly against his pale whiskers. This was paradise. This was worth every heartbreak, every ounce of pain.

"Well then we'd better get started!" he gasped, wings arcing at his sides as he danced in place. With a grin he turned and beckoned Aleta to his side. "What Czar duties would you like to help me with today, engeltje?" If she knew of any he would certainly entertain her foremost notion, but he had a few ideas he could utilize if she was unsure.

The lightning child grinned gleefully at her father, unable to hide the complete and utter adoration and devotion that consumed her each time she found herself on an outing with the Czar. It had never bothered the girl that her family was not what one might call "traditional;" in fact, it hadn't occurred to the filly at all that her parents' arrangement was an oddity. It was all that she knew, after all, and she was not yet old enough to question all the things that she didn't know.

So, too, did she fail to question her odd aversion to physical contact. That no one else experienced the sharp, tingling pains of the world around them was lost on the cheerful filly, who had long since learned to brush off her misfortune and ignore it in order to experience the joys of the world. Besides, her parents had been nothing if not doting to their daughter; the lightning child never had the chance to suspect that she might be different. Oh, sure, she had noticed other parents nuzzling their children, had noticed how often her peers play-fought and rambled into one another. Still, she did not fathom the reasoning behind it, and as yet had been saved from the prejudices of the world against anything it did not understand.

And so the child scrunched up her nose and looked thoughtfully upward at the figure that towered over her, tilting her head almost comically to one side in careful consideration of the stallion's query. It occurred to her suddenly that she didn't know what a Czar was supposed to do all day, only that he was supposed to be busy. What a predicament she had landed herself in! Czars protect the herd, she told herself, but she knew all too well that there was nothing in this world that would convince her father to allow her into harm's way.

The girl pursed her lips. Czars are supposed to... hold meetings! But she couldn't help with that either. For one, what in the world would she possibly say to all those horses? And for another, she couldn't stand the thought of so many that close to her, just staring, waiting for her to speak. Czars... meet new horses. The girl was deflating now, her ears tilting slightly toward her rump, her eyes lowering uncertainly. How was she supposed to do that within the confines of her own home?

"Daddy," she began finally, the slightest of pouts evident in her voice, "what does a Czar do?"

"Talk."
