Tae kept returning back here. She and Grusha had spent so much of their time scouring through these woods that the mandible-marked filly felt more of a kinship with these trees than she did her own home. But even so, she didn't feel much of a connection to anything with her sister.

Her twin.

Seestra.. She thought, her eyes looking through the sun-dappled foliage. Was there even snow on the ground when she last saw Grusha? Tae couldn't remember. Had it been longer? She knew this Frostfall had lasted an absurdly long time but ... had it really been that long?

Had it?

Mal and Hel roamed far ahead of their bonded. Their black bodies moves like streaking shadows through the sunny underbrush. They snapped at one another playfully - Hel always being the more serious of the two and responding with his hackles raised at his older counterpart - but for the most part they still looked like pups out for a run. Their tails wagged, their tongues lolled, and they seemed oblivious to the darkness that constantly loomed over Tae's small mind.

She hadn't even noticed when Grusha vanished. She just ... assumed she was still sleeping, or had wondered off, or -

Sigh.

Her shoulders slumped. It had taken a few days, and then? Then Tae had searched frantically, thinking the worst. She checked all their usually places, made traps hoping that perhaps Grusha would trip one and at least she would know that she was alright and out and about somewhere. But she was thwarted every time. Grusha was no where to be found.

And so that's how Tae spent most of her days - always looking for her larger twin out of the corner of her eye and never assuming that she was truly gone. After all, Zero had told her that Grusha had been sent on some secret mission with Ampere, and while she wasn't 100% sure that she believed him, the hope it gave her was enough to keep her going.

There was nothing like spying on your mother whern she thought you were sleeping and seeing her slip away into the night without a word to anyone. It was enough to rouse the curiosity of a young child and make that child want to know what her parent was up to. At the time Grusha had been rather proud of herself that she had managed to follow her mother without being noticed. Even so it was hard for her to keep up with the much faster mare. It wasn't until she made it to the forest that she finally lost Ampere.

And there she stayed.

It wasn't because she was lost. That wasn't it at all. (That was part of the reason, but Grusha would never admit to being lost in the woods.) Nope. She stayed in the forest because she liked it there. She liked being alone. (lie) She liked teaching herself how to survive in the wilds on her own. (half truth) She liked stalking and killing things in the forest. (truth) She dididn't miss anyone. (lie lie lie)

She missed Tae. Not having her twin right there beside her made her feel like a part of her was missing. Like someone cut off two of her legs and tossed her aside.

Grusha couldn't even remember how long she'd been lost terrorizing the forest but it took up a great deal of her free time. It was the moments when she wasn't stalking some poor, innocent squirrel and the moments when she would try to nap alone that her loneliness really became obvious. Not even her bond with Nashoba could appease her because the bond she shared with her sister was completely different.

There was one really good thing about the forest and that was the abundance of bones left behind by the predators. Being there allowed Grusha to practce her magic, but she thought  it was still nothing truly impressive without being combined with Tae's magic.

"Not good enough."That thought made the girl frown as she practiced piecing together the bones she'd gathered from her kills and from the kills of other predators. One by one she ripped the bones away from the awkward monstrosity she'd created and she flung them angrily into the forest. Most of the bones landed in bushes, but some of them smacked against trees and cracked or completely broke in half. Nashoba, being the playful pup he still was, took off into the brush to collect the bones that Grusha had thrown away.

Of course the boys heard the sounds ahead before Tae did. They smelled and felt and knew, and they passed that knowing onto Tae even as they darted ahead.

Mal especially was keen to see Nashoba. They were after all, more or less litter-mates, and Nashoba was far more friendly than the Hellhound whose mind pressed down on the wolf bossily every now and again.

Tae felt her heart beat faster as the wolf and hellhound took off, spryly shooting through the dappled sunlit ground and racing ahead, their noses guiding them efficiently. Both canines barked as soon as Nashoba came into view, but it was Mal who lunged ahead trying to tackle his fellow timber wolf. Yips of excitement and wagging tails abound.

Meanwhile, Tae was racing behind them. They had a head start, but the girl's pace was quickened by her own excitement. If Nashoba was here then-

"SEESTRA-" She yelled loudly, ignoring the happy jostle of wolfish bodies and instead storming through the brush and dense forest to try and find her twin. It occurred to her briefly that perhaps the bones Nashoba was chewing on were Grusha, but she dismissed the thought immediately. There was no way the wolf would appear quite so happy if his bonded were dead (do companions even live if their bonded dies? She wondered, but didn't think so).

No. Grusha was definitely alive. Tae dared to even think that she might be close.

The mandible-marked filly's body began to wisp away as her anticipation and excitement grew. She appeared like some half-fleshed out ghost trying to gain hold of a body but failing to do so completely. Only her eyes - wide and pale - looked truly alive.

"Seestra!" She called again, using her spirit-magic to create a path through a particularly thick hedge so that she could break through to the other side.

Grusha could feel Nashoba's sudden excitement but she chalked it up to him simply having fun chasing after the bones she'd thrown away. The pup was easy to entertain and she'd noticed that he was always the most excited when he had a bone to chase after or chew on. It didn't even cross her mind that her sister and her companions would be the one that the wolf would be excited over.

It wasn't until she heard the sound of Tae's voice, a voice she knew so well that realization finally crashed its way through her thick skull. Tae was there. Tae had found her. (not that she was lost or anything of the sort.) "TAE?!" the girl yelled back, disbelief coloring her tone. Nashoba tried his best to communicate through his boned with Grusha that Tae and Mal were both really there, but his attempt was soon abandoned in favor of wrestling with his brother.

"Tae!" Grusha called again, but this time there was no disbelief or doubt in her voice. She could feel Tae (or at least she thought she could). Excitement began to course its way through her veins and the anticipation of seeing her sister again made her heart beat faster. As her excitement grew her flesh began to peel away, revealing the girl's skeleton. Grusha, of course, couldn't just stand there and wait for Tae to find her, so she crashed her way through the brush that Nashoba had disappeared into only a few moments before.

And there she was in all her ghostly glory, calling for her.

Seestra.

That was all it took for the remaining flesh that clung stubbornly to her bones to peel away, leaving the girl completely skeletal. She raced toward her sister as fast as her legs would carry her and she had no intention of stopping until she collided with the ghost.

[blubbers everywhere Q___Q]

TAE

The girl became even more ghostly as her ears strained to re-hear the word she thought she had heard. Already her mind was reeling and racing. Despite the way the brambles and branches clung to her tangled mane, Tae continued to force her way through the thick brush. Despite her ghostly appearance, she was still very real, and the tugging and pulling against her did indeed hurt. But for now, it didn't matter all.

Nothing mattered except getting to Grusha.

Tae! The mandible-marked filly swerved, aligning her flailing through the bush towards the sound of her sister's voice.

Her voice! Tae thought with jubilant excitement. It was then that Tae saw her - the girl composed entirely of bone. For many, such a sight would have instilled panic or would have made their stomachs queasy, but for Tae, it was the most wonderful sight in the world.

"Seestra!" She cried, allowing her much smaller body to fling itself towards her skeletal sibling. As they collided, ghost and skeleton, Tae's wings flapped forward trying to wrap around Grusha's taller shoulders. Her dark skull buried itself against her twin's shoulder, and she exhaled a cackle of happy laughter and relief.

Playfully Mal nipped at Nashoba, equally happy to see his wolf-mate. Hel on the other hand, sat reservedly, staring with mostly disapproval at the two slightly older wolves.

"I thought you'd left me-" Tae breathed unsteadily, still trying to catch her breath, which was coming in excited bursts. "-and then Zero said-" She stepped back now, still 100% raucously excited about seeing her twin, but now her face was tinged with something else. Curiosity? Disappointment? Sadness?
"- he said you went on a secret mission with Mother?" The look on the younger twin's face expressed what it was that should couldn't say. And she couldn't say it because she would never accuse Grusha of it. And yet?

Why didn't you take me with you? Why did you go?

"I was worried. I looked for you. I thought I looked everywhere. We thought you were gone." The wolf and hellhound made low growling sounds in their throats in acknowledgement of what their bonded had said.

A grunt slipped past Grusha's lips as her and Tae's very solid bodies collided. All at once Tae's wings were wrapped around her and her face was pressed into her shoulder and it was the best feeling in the world to the bigger twin. Grusha nibbled affectionately at Tae's tangled mane. She'd missed her sister sorely in the time that she'd been away and was so very happy to see her once again. "I mithed you." the girl mumbled against her sister's mane.

Gradually her excitement waned, but her happiness did not. Portions of her body became solid again, while small areas still shone as skeletal. She snorted fiercely as Tae began to speak again, claiming to have thought she'd left her. "Never." Grusha thought fiercely, but she remained quiet because there was more that Tae had to say. "What?" Had Zero really told Tae that she had gone on a secret mission with their mother? The same mare who had basically told them they were too young and weak to do anything?

Grusha snorted again. "Thecret mithon? I thaw Ma leaving tho I followed her becauth I wanted to know what the wath up to. But I lothed her in here," She explained. "There wath no thecret mithon." At least for her there hadn't been one.

Guilt weighed heavily on Grusha as Tae spoke once more, claiming to have thought she'd lost her. "I'm thorry." She said with a frown. "I promith to take you with me neth time." She nipped at Tae's neck as she made her promise. "Did Ma go back home? Ith Pa thill there?"

Tae mumbled a half-compressed, "I missed you too" into Grusha's body, before the two twins parted. The smaller of the two carried on with her little description of what she had thought, but her speech had slowed somewhat as ... something crossed Grusha's face. But the girl had continued because Grusha hadn't stopped her. However when her twin did speak, Tae understood immediately.

Her body whisped apart slowly, not because she was frightened or anxious, but almost as if the blood was draining from her body, and her flesh could no longer remain solid.

There was no secret mission.

"But-" Tae began, then fell silent as Grusha continued. She shrugged off her apology - now that her twin was back, all was as it should be. Tae deducted two things from this: That Zero had lied, and that Ampere was gone. The mandible-marked filly swallowed hard, glad that she was in Grusha's company where showing moderate weakness was acceptable. She didn't like it, but at least she didn't have to mask her face for the sake of her twin.

Her lip trembled only once, and just for a moment as she shook her head a decisive no.

"Ma is gone... Pa is around, of course." Her large pale eyes stared at her twin with a dark anxiety. "Zero lied to me. She nearly growled, her eyes flashing impatiently, as if all she wanted to do in that moment was strangle her brother. At her heels, both the wolf and the hellhound began to growl, feeling the animosity waft off of their bonded. Tae shushed them instantly with a quick kick of her tiny hoof.

"What now?" She asked Grusha, who wasn't normally the brains of hte operation. Though given the current circumstance - that Tae hadn't even noticed Ampere leaving much less Grusha following, and that she had believed Zero's lies - she was willing to give up her normal title of 'decider of plans'.

If there was anything that Grusha had come to hate in her short life it was the look on Tae's face when something truly upset her, and the subsequent feeling she got in the pit of her stomach because of it. Grusha's natrual instinct was to smash anything that hurt her sister, to completely and utterly destroy it. When she couldn't do that it made her blood boil, as was the case in her current situation. Nashoba picked up on the spark of anger that had ignited in his bonded and a low, threatening growl tumbled in his furry chest. Tae's trembling lip only made Grusha's anger grow, but she didn't know where to direct it; herself for leaving without Tae, Ampere for leaving, Pa for not looking for them or...

"Zero lied to me."

Bingo.

zero. Zero ZERO.

Tae's simple statement took all of the anger Grusha felt and pinpointed it on their older brother. Her body, which had begun to look more solid, started to revert back to the skeletal form it had taken on when she'd been excited to see her sister. Her flesh continued to peel away as she thought about their brother, Zero the Liar.

"What now?"

Was Tae really asking her what they should do? Tae was usually the brains behind the operation and Grusha was the muscle that tried to make her will be done. This turn of events left the larger twin surprised, but she already knew what she wanted. "Liarth thould be punithed." She said and she waited for Tae to either agree with her or turn her wrath elsewhere.

But Tae wasn't about to divert her twin's anger, for what Grusha had said seemed perfectly obvious now to the mandible-marked filly.

Liars should be punished.

Did justifications and reasons matter? Suddenly Tae didn't think so. Whatever reasons Zero had for lying (was it to spare her feelings? To make her feel better?) seemed entirely irrelevant. Lying was for cowards and weaklings, and .. well. Suddenly her mind decided that perhaps there were times when lying was okay - like in times of war perhaps when you had to be sneaky but that sort of deception was not the same was what Zero had done.

Tae's ears flattened against her skull, but there was a menacing pleasure rising in her pale gaze. "You are right seestra. Liars should be punished."

Both Mal and Hel growled alongside Nashoba, but even their voices seemed more pleased than they had moments ago, as if anticipating what was about to come.

"-even when those liars are brothers." She concluded, her body solidifying slightly. Tae turned her tiny skull back to look through the brambles that she had crashed through. Her face was thoughtful and contemplative now, no longer looking sad, or scared, or doubtful. In an instance Grusha had calmed the sea of her heart and set things right.

"Let us go back seestra. I imagine Zero will be very interested to know that you are back from you secret mission. We'll see what he has to say about your return." The girl flashed a devilish smile, already wondering what her older (and now nearly ostracized) brother would have to say for himself.

The grin that slithered across Grusha's face as Tae agreed with her was malicious in its entirety. It didn't matter to her why Zero had lied to Tae, only that he had and in doing so had hurt her. It didn't matter if they were siblings or not, Zero would suffer the consequences of hurting Tae just like anyone else who would be so foolish. He would learn to never lie and hurt his sister ever again.

Grusha's own body began to take on a more solid appearance as she listened to Tae speak. Flesh melded back to bone and the girl began to look more like herself than a skeleton. "Only cowardth lie to family." The larger twin snorted. "And traitorth abandon them." She added on as her thoughts shifted to their mother, but all in all that didn't really matter too much to Grusha. As long as she had Tae everything would be alright.

Everything.

"Let us go back seestra. I imagine Zero will be very interested to know that you are back from you secret mission. We'll see what he has to say about your return."

Grusha nodded her head in agreement. She, herself, was interested in hearing what Zero had to say when she showed up with Tae. "How do you want to punith him?" The larger girl asked as she walked in the directed Tae had come from. She turned her head to look at her sister, her ears tilted forward to hear what the other girl would concoct. Sure, Grusha had made the decision to punish Zero but she felt that Tae had the right to decide how. After all, she was the one that he had lied to.

Tae nodded defiantly as her sister began speaking. Lying was cowardly, and perhaps worse, it was insulting. Did Zero think of as a pulling little baby? Certainly she had been lost without her twin, but she hadn't been reduced to tears, hadn't broken down, hadn't needed to be lied to. And yet he had. Whatever chivalry had inspired his tongue to turn so black (for she was still under the impression that Zero didn't lie maliciously to her), didn't matter.

However her nod halted as Grusha mentioned those who abandoned their family. Was that what Ampere had done? Gaucho didn't know where she was and neither did Zero ... if Grusha saw her leaving it was obviously done suddenly. But why? Was Ampere even still in Helovia? Or had the Mother of Companions only that in name now, and no longer a mother to her children any longer?

Tae exhaled shakily, not committing to this judgement. Not yet anyways.

"I have lost sleep over you seestra. Let us show our dearest brother how that feels." Magic surged through the mandible-marked filly, and the branches around them began to move as ghostly hands began to slam them to and fro. "Let us also show him what it is like to be afraid in the dark." Her lips parted, revealing a pearly white smile.

The twins had a great deal of bones saved up now in their secret stash, and while Grusha was away, both Mal and Hel had been assisting her in adding to it. Surely the girls could find some way to put them to use. And they would not go to waste. Family after all, was everything.
