EZITAL

Sunsets in the falls were always a sight to behold. The low, golden light danced over the jagged edges of the cliffs and caught the water as it crashed into the pools below. Sometimes the skies were streaked with rose and crimson, but tonight the clouds seemed almost purple.

A storm was rolling in from the east, and tonight promised heavy rains in the hours to come. Fireflies dotted the shadows between the rocks and the occasional chirp of a cricket or croak of a frog broke the quiet. For now, the evening was calm.

It was later than he'd intended to return when Ezital stepped back into the herdlands. He'd set out in the early dawn and even cantered when the terrain allowed, and still he'd only just made it before dark. It wasn't that he feared the things that went bump in the night. His usual wanderings were nocturnal anyway. If anything, the dark should fear him.

But he'd been gone for a bit longer this time, and there was a strange feeling in his gut. He missed sleeping in familiar territory. He missed knowing every blade of grass and every rock he passed. There was one particular boulder outside Vitani's cave that he'd named Ricardo. Ricardo watched the cave while he was out. He missed Ricardo.

He thought about going there for the night, but the filly would probably be sleeping. She probably wouldn't mind him being there, but they hadn't had a serious talk about him staying there yet. He would be better off resting under a tree and heading over in the morning.

Yawning widely, he paused to admire the light as it drifted closer to the horizon. Yes, it was good to be home again.

It had not been long since Ktulu had finally returned to the Falls after the scouting mission that Archibald had sent her on. Since her return she had not done much besides rest and tend to her healing wounds, but that did not mean that there was nothing on her mind. She knew that sooner rather than later she would have to call a meeting with the warriors to see who was still there and who was new. She had to set up patrols and spars and countless other things that made her still weary body ache. Now, however, was not the time. No. Now was meant for relaxing and breathing and simply existing.

The dark mare stood on one of the many rolling hills that shaped the landscape of the Hidden Falls and she watched the sun sink below the horizon. There truly was nothing like sunsets in the Falls, but Ktulu rarely had time to watch and appreciate it. Her ears twitched as the first of the crickets began their nightly song. A breeze rippled the grass, rustled branches, and hinted at a coming storm. All around her the fireflies that had been with her since the ancient bear in the forest had given her Eytan danced. Watching them made the Constrictor feel a sense of peace that was rare.

Even as the breeze carried the scent of another toward her it did not rattle Ktulu's calm. She was still far too weary to worry about appearing tough as nails. Besides, she knew from the scent that it was one of her warriors, or at least he had been when she'd left. Whether or not he still was was something she was bound to find out. She turned her head, her crimson eyes seeking him out and finding him as he made his way home.

'Ezital.' Eytan said as he, too, watched the stallion.

Ktulu, of course, remembered him. She and Ciceron had discussed him after his spar with him. The young stud had a lot of spunk and heart and would someday make a find warrior, she was sure. When he paused to look at the sunset she nickered a greeting to him and an invitation to join her on the hill where the view of the sunset was remarkable.

EZITAL

Ezital couldn't help flinching a bit when he saw who had called. It was a bit like getting caught sneaking out by your mother, if your mother happened to go by the title The Constrictor. He knew that no one had told him expressly that he couldn't come and go as he pleased, but there was always a chance that someone would decide he was gone too often.

He felt incredibly awkward making his way to where she stood, every step felt like he moved too hastily and too lethargically all at once. Her red eyes burned into him, casting their silent judgment on what they saw. Did she see someone that was worthy of their position? She might just see a cocky colt that never grew up.

"Hi," he said, for lack of anything else. "How are you?"

There was something different in her demeanor than the other times he'd spoken with her, or stood in her presence. The first time she'd stalked out of the woods like a fearsome specter, and at meetings she seemed cold and serious. He'd held his anger close to his heart for the way she'd spoken to Vitani during their first meeting, but it was hard to draw it up now. He looked her over more closely. Was she hurt? It was difficult to tell in the low light.

Of course, he'd planned to seek her out eventually. He needed to tell her the events of his last venture, but that could've waited until he'd rested. That was all the reason he needed for the restlessness that struck him from time to time. It wasn't about the reasons he left to wander aimlessly, it was about marketing.

"I met someone interesting out on patrol," he began. "She was strangely emotional and dramatic over someone they called the Elephant, and then she told me her name and rank. She said she was Rexanna, the Head Thief of the Aurora Basin."

He left out the parts of her acting off, fawning over the old stallion right after seeming totally heartsick over another horse. Was that important? Surely, Ktulu would know what was important to know and what wasn't.

Ktulu watched Ezital long enough to make sure that the stallion was walking toward her before she looked back toward the sinking sun. Had she called him to her to talk business with him she would have stared him down, impatient with how slow he was moving, but that was not the case. She had invited him to stand with her because he had been there and she'd never had a chance to properly speak with him. When he'd come to the Falls all hell had been breaking loose in Helovia and she'd had more to worry about than a rookie warrior.

"Hello." She murmured in response to Ezital's greeting. "Well enough." Came her next response. "I haven't taken the time to watch the sunset in so long." The mare murmured. "Its nice." And it was nice that she had company, too, even if he might be reluctant to be in her presence. She had spent more than enough time alone on the scouting mission that Archibald had sent her on, it felt good to have someone with her.

Finally Ktulu turned away from the sunset to look at the stalion that stood with her. "And you?" She inquired. "Have you found the Falls comfortable? Is your position as a warrior to your liking?" Are you patroling? Are you sparring? Are you getting stronger? She wanted to ask, but remained silent. She could ask all those questions when she called a warrior meeting in the coming days. For now they would just have a friendly conversation.

The dark mare couldn't help but smile when Ezital spoke of meeting someone on patrol. It was as if he had read her thoughts. "Did you?" Her ears tilted forward as he continued on. "I don't know anyone known as the Elephant. I don't know her, either." She said, a frown pulling the corners of her mouth down. "Emotionally wrecked mares can be dangerous and unpredictable." She remembered how wrecked she had been after watching her son be murdered. She'd wanted the entire world to burn and if it had not been for Archibald she would have seen to it. "Keep an eye out for her, let me or Archibald know if you find her sneaking around here." She paused and nodded to the stallion. "Good job, Ezital." Because he deserved to be praised. "But I didn't call you up here for a report or anything like that. I just called you up to enjoy the view before the storm hits tonight."
