He's gone. He's gone and she doesn't know what to do. Promises mean nothing to her when they've come from the teeth of liars before. When she has lied so much herself, and made people believe it. The child - children? - in her womb have no knowledge of the darkness and the hell that she has seen. That they will see. That their mother had wielded without care or consequence. And she will raise them at her side with viperous tongues and power in their voices. Because it is the only defense she knows how to give her unborn children, the only armor she can supply them. She'd rather them live jaded and cruel than innocent and hurting.

But even as a mother with three children - two bloodless - to her name, she is a failure of one. She knows now how hard it must have been on her own mother, dealing with two opposing forces such as she and Raeden. Her regret for her childish actions has never been stronger than when she faces a road of maternal failure a fourth time. There is no shoulder to lean her head upon, nobody to confide in that lay within the faces upturned towards her. Ashamin is gone and she is directionless, her faith shaken.

She goes to her parents.

Their souls are long departed, no wisdom can be offered by their voices. There is no physical body to press herself against, no scent to calm her nerves and wild emotions. There is only the cool bark of a tree that grows unnaturally, boughs budding with new life just as her own body does. Intertwined trunks that remind her of a love that had transcended death itself. Her parents had loved chaotically, passionately. Nothing had stopped their union, not forever. Hotaru tries to take strength in the tales they had passed down to her, a cold replacement for the lives she'd never been able to witness on her own.

Her back is suffering the laborious effort of a child too large for her small body, and it is why she suspects twins on the horizon. Alice helps lower her to the snowy earth between the majestic roots, her warm fur a further comfort in the cold morning. One pale cheek touches the bark beneath her, staring aimlessly into the distance as she imagines what trials motherhood will bring her this time.

She only prays her parents - their souls - will guide and watch over her. It's the only sentimentality she will allow herself, this solitary headstone the Gods have granted her. Few even know what the tree means or why it grows. So Hotaru will lay beneath the boughs of her parents' love, because she is incapable of laying between the warm press of their bodies. And she will seek wisdom where she never has before, because even a Queen has weaknesses, ones she must conceal. Her children will always be one of them.

I’ve become a simple souvenir of someone’s kill
She had debated going home for awhile now. After being rejected and pushed away from visiting the Edge - from being able to tell the father of the life growing within her, she found solace in the comforting talks of a spotted stranger. She had figured out the name/names for her child, possibly children as she's beginning to wonder. Rexanna had grown much larger than she had with Rein. It was even more frightening than beforehand. Granted, at least she knew now that she could even bear healthy children. But you never quite recovered after birthing a stillborn. It was the fear that was subconsciously there, regardless of how many times one ended up carrying children. And now, now that she had slightly begun to come to terms with the fact that she wouldn't have that extra protection of the children from a father, she'd have to learn how to take care of it herself. It had been a relief to let Rein off with Ashamin while she went her own way now and then. But things had been different to her eye - Rein hadn't even been in the Basin at all. Away, for so long without anyone but her wondering why.

And then he had decided to be angry with her, pointing a blood wielded sword at her own throat, shocking and burning her skin. She had since recovered, and her child had became the son she remembered. Anger was no longer something that drove the two of them away from one another, but she had began to learn that he needed his space - and so they parted ways. As she had been doing with everyone it seemed.

Nevertheless, the Thief made her way across the Steppe in the chill of the morning. Slow, but determined to make her way to her icy mountainous home. Yet, as she approached the normal path she took, she paused a moment to glance around the path - blue gaze dancing across the scarce amount of tree life as ashen dipped legs carried her over the pale earth. It was a good point to stop and look, seeing as she spotted something near the base of one of the trees. From the distance, she couldn't see exactly what it was. Though her curiosity often got the better of her, and so she carried herself closer to the movement - silently hoping she wasn't stumbling into a trap of some kind. Marembo, her polecat companion, had wrapped himself around her withers and buried herself in her mane - clutching onto clumps of the dual toned tresses to keep himself steady as he peeked around with beady blue eyes. His black and golden dappling almost blending him in well enough with the shadows and gold that lined Rexanna's own back.

As she approached, Rexanna squinted her eyes against the slow growing of the sunrise, the light reflecting from the icy land around her. And as she looked closer, she began to realize that the creature she had seen beforehand - was actually her Queen. Her brow furrowed slightly as she picked up a bit of speed, worried that perhaps something was wrong. "Hotaru?" She called at first, coming closer to try and make sure it was indeed the Queen of the North. Of course, there wasn't really any mistaking it. Hotaru had always been that fierce and beautiful rose - and Alice had been there to show the protective feelings that Hotaru hadn't shown herself. Rexanna remembered it so - during the last pregnancy when the canine had seemed to growl at her. The Thief hadn't forgotten, but she was still curious as to why. Now didn't seem like a good time, however. And perhaps her Queen might not even want her company. But she would try. "My Lady, is everything alright?" She questioned, quietly as she lowered her head to look upon Hotaru better. She stayed a small amount of distance away, not wanting to encroach on whatever was going on - but close enough to be of help if necessary. Remy, sitting up now on her withers took the opportunity to make his way off of his bonded and slid his way to the ground. He stood then, looking to Alice and Hotaru, his little hands holding one another as worry traced from his bonded to him, making him just as worried. And it showed on his face as well.

The Steppe is vast and cold, and Hotaru does not anticipate company when this trail is so infrequently traversed. Though the land had been thrown into chaos with the string of murders orchestrated by the Moon Goddess, the denizens had all but forgotten the innocents left to rot. Though they had been turned into trees to stand vigilant and immortal against the night, Hotaru could not help but wonder how long it would take for the Goddess' wrongs to be forgotten. Did anyone even recall the body count? The names of the murdered, much less the histories? Hotaru had been so intimately involved with keeping the murderer from discovery...she would never forget the bodies that lay at her hooves, the agony of having to destroy evidence from the bodies of her own parents and Stella. And so she would retreat to this tree for the sake of remembrance, penance. Her guilt was her own, for nobody had ever discovered that she had been the one concealing the evidence. And self-flagellation was a better alternative to escaping from the memories with no consequences at all.

Rexanna coming, Alice murmured into her drowsy, distant mind. While Hotaru slipped into the ever-flowing stream of her thoughts, Alice was an ever-attentive guardian. She would allow her mistress the respite she clearly desired - needed, if the pair were to be honest with themselves - and she would ensure Hotaru remained safe at the same time. But the woman approaching was of no real danger to them, especially with fondness Hotaru felt for the golden lass. She was not one to make friends, and yet Rexanna was slowly but surely growing on her as their interactions grew in number. Perhaps it was because they were kindred spirits, or some cosmic plan at work, but Hotaru always felt at ease in the Thief's presence.

Pale face turned to regard the approaching woman, eyes falling to her rounded, sunny sides. A wry grin overtook her lips at seeing the mare in a similar state. Tis the season, she huffed to herself, amused. A little slinky creature slid down to the snow between them, and she and Alice regarded it curiously before she deigned to respond. Rexanna's concern was touching, and it helped warm and soothe the aching, raw edges of her heart.

"Yes, everything's fine Rexanna," she murmured kindly, heaving herself unsteadily to her hooves with Alice's help. Her huge belly swayed, and though she was exhausted constantly as they sapped at her energy, she proffered her muzzle to exchange scents with the beautiful maiden. As she withdrew, the Lady gestured towards the tree at her back. "Merely hoping for guidance from my parents during this time," she laughed, a tinkling sound despite the tired tones at the edges, clearly referring to her pregnancy.

With a discerning glance at Rexanna's sides, she smiled, something commiserating in her mis-matched gaze. "How is it going for you?" If there was anything she could do to aid the loyal fae, Hotaru would not hesitate to complete it. Perhaps it would even draw her own mind from the turmoil of the present, and help the pair of them at the same time.

I’ve become a simple souvenir of someone’s kill
Rexanna and her Lady both shared wide sides and parents that were so far gone to get advice from. It was a shame really, but perhaps one day they might be able to confide in one another of the harsh realities of life. Her Lady looked up at her from laying beneath the trees, heaving as she lifted herself from the chilled earth of Birdsong. A small breath of relief released from the Thief – one she didn’t even know she had been holding. A quick glance over the mare’s body was a breath of fresh air – she wasn’t hurt, just simply enjoying her time alone. But of course she wasn’t alone, Alice was there. Rexanna approached closer to her, extending her own ivory muzzle to the pink hued one of her superior. They touched briefly, but both were warm and soft in their gentleness and kindness.

Hotaru then gestured to the trees as Rexanna’s oceanic eyes followed, her cream ears swooped forward to listen as she explained and laughed about what she was doing. A swift nod was all Rexanna did as her tail brushed by her hips and a smile crossed her lips. “Oh I see.” She admitted, offering her Lady a smile. But then, Hotaru’s own eyes swept the gilded Thief’s sides that were swollen just about as much as Hotaru’s were. Were they both just having exceptionally large children? And as she asked how it was going for her she emitted a small laugh. “Not great, but not bad either.” She admitted, smiling to the mare.

I was just on my way back before preparing for a journey to the Edge.” She admitted with a shy smile. “How have you been though? After everything.” She questioned, doing her best to mention the fact that at the last herd meeting she was bruised and covered in blood. Worry crossed her face for a split second – knowing that the Basin’s Rose was probably totally fine now. Besides, she was pregnant. And what mare would consciously think about getting pregnant when there were those out willing to harm them? Perhaps Rexanna and Hotaru were more alike than the Thief originally thought. While Hotaru had Tingal, Rexanna had Calstron. There would always be shadows at the doorsteps of the two women. At least they were strong enough to realize it, strong enough to overcome it despite some sacrifices here and there.

Dark-lipped smile greets her as she rises heavily to her aching hooves, grateful for the numbing cold of the snow. She suspects she'll birth sometime in Birdsong, is grateful that the season will be welcoming to her children and prays for their health. Hotaru is unaware of Rexanna's relief, the emotions she'd felt upon seeing her dark rose frame against the roots of her parents' tree. Instead she focused on the familiar scent of Rexanna as it swept into her soft nares, muzzles brushing gently in companionable greeting. She held a deep fondness for the gilded lass herself, and Alice rumbled a noise only Hotaru could recognize as laughter. Beta, her hellhound proclaimed without any doubt or hesitation, drawing Hotaru's surprised gaze for a moment as she and Rexanna parted naturally.

Alice was not a creature that dispensed her loyalty easily, and yet here she was, naming Rexanna the beta to Hotaru's alpha. The position of the trusted individuals in a pack, the strong and reliable, allowed to get close to the alpha. It said a lot about Alice, but it also said a lot about how Hotaru felt about Rexanna, for those feelings were the basis of Alice's decision. Before she could become too entrenched in her outwardly-silent conversation with her bonded, Rexanna's voice drew her back to the present. She was grateful that the mare did not show pity, or perhaps she did not understand that the tree had been crafted from the spot where her parents' bodies had lain. Either way, Hotaru wasn't going to say anything about it. Not when it made her heart hurt a little less to gloss over the truth.

"Heavy little buggers, aren't they?" a tired smirk creeps across Hotaru's pale lips, shifting her hindquarters to adjust the weight off her spine as much as she could. But she is far more interested in what Rexanna has to say, and the interest must show on her face as her ears twitch and her head tilts inquisitively.

"The Edge? Is the father there?" Perhaps it's a bold question, but she knows that neither she nor Deimos asked Rexanna to do anything on the Basin's behalf there, so it is the only other conclusion she can think of aside from visiting a friend or loved one. But the peaceful tone drops alongside Hotaru's shoulders, a deep sigh emanating from the pregnant mare.

"Dealing. I was...stolen away by a nightmare from my past, and nearly killed. And then challenged by an annoying rule-abider while already injured on my way home." Her face is grim, and she hasn't told anyone about what had happened to her prior to the herd meeting. She lifts her eyes to Rexanna's, suddenly nervous. "I've not told anyone yet. Please don't share what I've said. I trust you." And wasn't that a shocking revelation, both in her mind and on her lips? Because Hotaru trusted very few individuals, and yet...she considered Rexanna something close to her friend. And it had the potential to grow even deeper, if the Thief was willing.

Beta, Alice repeatedly smugly at her side, as if she had guessed the answer of the universe before the gods had spoken it. Hotaru tried not to roll her eyes.

I’ve become a simple souvenir of someone’s kill
Heavy little buggers, aren’t they?

A grin spread across Rexanna’s lips as a small laugh escaped. She nodded to Hotaru and answered with a simple, equally as tired “Yes.” Her fluted ears perked to her Lady as she began to question the Thief. Instead of asking simply what kind of business Rexanna had at the Edge – obviously not herd related – she had asked if the father was there. Normally, the Thief would be more than excited to share the news with anyone and everyone as to the father of the life within her, but something about her encounter from the Edge weighed on her in an uncomfortable means. The gilded mare should know better by now, to know that those in her home wouldn’t judge her for her mistakes like the blushed Pegasus had done at the Edge. Hotaru wouldn’t paint her red with arrows and banish her away from her home. The Thief had nothing to fear with indulging information with her Lady, and so she nodded. “He is, yes. Tembovu is the father.” She spoke gently, perhaps a bit surprisingly quietly, before wondering if Hotaru even knew who the hell he was. Her ears flicked up once again toward Hotaru as she cleared her throat to add in. “He’s the King of the Edge at the moment.” Her smile softened, heart racing with how excited the Elephant King would be when he found out about the twins.

But the conversation began to shift, and Rexanna found herself shifting her weight in response as Hotaru began to confide in her. She spoke of being stolen from a nightmare in her past – oh how Rexanna could understand that one – and then challenged while injured. A frown crossed her features as she reached out, catching the Lady’s eyes as she grew nervous. “Your secrets safe with me, Hotaru.” Her voice was soft, encouraging as she aimed her muzzle to brush the pink shoulder of her superior. “Perhaps we have a lot more in common than originally thought.” Rexanna smiled again, this time more encouraging than the last time. She retracted her pale face and gestured down to the “C” marred into her pelt, a stark black in contrast to her once pristine pelt. “I just got this recently from a nightmare from my past.” Her eyes fell to the ground, trailing over Alice momentarily before her gaze sought out Hotaru’s once again. “Don’t you worry, though. We might be a little tired and fat at the moment, but once we get these kids out and on their own there’ll be hell to pay.” She let a small laugh escape and sending a soft wink over to the Lady of the Basin.

Then, she turned her attention back to the pregnancy that cursed them both. Tilting her head slightly, she offered a gentle smile. “If you don’t mind me asking, who’s the father for your bundle of joy?” She questioned, genuinely curious. No part of her could imagine that it was Ashamin that would be the father to twins from the Lady. No part of her would even be upset about it. Ashamin and the Thief had indeed had a son, but the poor child wasn’t a product of love, didn’t have parents that lived together and had an unfathomable love for one another. All Rexanna could do was wish that Hotaru would be able to experience something like that, even if she couldn’t. Even though Rexanna was hopelessly in love with the Elephant King, they lived nearly worlds away.

The exhaustion in the beautiful femme's voice inspired an echoing laugh from the Valkyrie, a tired kinship extending between the pair of them. A bond forged in shadows and sharp eyes, motherhood and independence. If they were both not accounted for, perhaps Hotaru would have felt more for the golden lass than simple appreciation and friendship. Her mind glanced around the sore, tender memory of Rhiannon, and she quickly shifted her whispering thoughts away from that. They were already talking of such heavy material, she did not need to torture herself any further with memories of what could have been. What almost was.

Distraction comes in the way of a name, and Hotaru's brows arch high in surprise across her beautiful face, lips curling into a surprised "oh". How intriguing, that one of her closest and most loyal had bedded the King of another land. She is conflicted, both wanting to ask how she fares as a friend, but wary of potential issues that could arise from her fraternization with another herd. Instead she lets her lips fall into a playful smirk, for she does not want to be the Lady of the Basin here with Rexanna beneath her parents' tree. She simply desires to stand in her own skin as Hotaru, as a friend. Alice's approval glows like fireflies, vague shapes and feelings in her mind and heart.

"Why Rexanna, you vixen you," she teases, a wink sliding easily across her pretty features. "Quite an accomplishment," she laughs, but it is all in good fun, lighthearted jesting that she lets fade easily into a small, sincere smile. "I pray he treats you well, my friend." And those two simple words say so much more than Hotaru will ever speak aloud, and she hopes Rexanna will be aware of the true meaning behind them. Perhaps take comfort in the sisterhood Hotaru extends, a promise that if she is ever in need, the Valkyrie will be there for her.

It seemed the Thief would be there for her as well, if the soft way Rexanna promises to hold her secret safe speaks true. Hotaru's shoulders sink with the relief of finally telling someone, of handing a small piece of the burden to someone else. The gratitude in her dual-colored gems is unmistakable. "Thank you, Rexanna." Her silence meant more to Hotaru than anything else, and that she had not judged the woman for her failure against Ampere and Tingal...well, it made her feel like less of a failure herself.

A grin slides across her face as Rexanna firmly promises that in the future, hell will rain down upon their enemies for the wrongs committed against them. "And I will aid you in any endeavor you take against the coward that gave you that," Hotaru purrs, eyes glinting with the scent of blood. She could be patient. The time would come when they would triumph over all others in their paths. But for now, they were mothers, and that would always come first.

Even if the subject of their children's fathers was...risky. Hotaru knew Rexanna had birthed Ashamin's first son, and so she dropped her ears almost apologetically, unsure of the relationship between the two. But surely it would not be an issue if the Thief was pregnant by Tembovu? Beta loyal. Alpha more important than mates. Alice's conviction and trust in Rexanna gave Hotaru the courage to speak her answer plainly.

"Ashamin, actually," she murmured softly, unable to keep the tremor of love from her voice. "Him leaving...it has not been easy. I pray he'll make it to their birth." She loved him so deeply, and yet he had departed the Basin, where her throne lay. Sometimes he felt miles away, even though he was not far physically. It had begun to take its toll on Hotaru's emotions, though she blamed most of it on the hormones.

I’ve become a simple souvenir of someone’s kill
The Thief’s ears flickered in uncertainty at how Hotaru would take the news of the father of her children. Would she suggest that perhaps her loyalties weren’t in the right place? That the only reason she would bed the King of another land was because she wasn’t happy in the Basin? Or would she think that Rexanna had been doing the best of her capabilities, carrying children for the King in turn of some phenomenal secrets that lay within the borders of the Edge that only an insider could find out about? If the golden vixen had to be honest, it was none of those, no matter how much she wanted it to be worth something in the end. But wasn’t love worth going to the ends of the earth for? Wasn’t it something that should be put forward, something to die for if the need should arise?

Would the Thief be willing to die for Tembovu?

Probably, regrettably. Would he do the same? Maybe, maybe not. It all depended on their next encounter – whenever that would be. When she hoped that perhaps going to the Edge was going to be a wondrous occasion, joyous when Tembovu found that his children grew within her; (after so many times she had wished it were his, no matter how much she loved Rein – how much she wished the child was the Elephant King’s) Would he be just as happy? But Hotaru’s words reached her ears, and nothing truly lied within them other than jesting and lighthearted joking. As if Rexanna breathed a sigh of relief, she let a small laugh out. “It’s not like it was expected, I’ve known the man since his first day in Helovia. Just turns out he had large aspirations.” She added in, hoping to ease some discomfort that her words may have caused. And yet, the conversation shifted and the Thief noticed the sunset mare relax as she said she’d keep her secret. Nodding lightly, Rexanna offered her an encouraging yet soothing smile. “Don’t men just hate it to get bested by women? I can’t wait.” She half joked to her, trying to lighten the mood while still understanding that despite what kind of trouble and harm might come to her that she’d at least have Hotaru by her side for it all.

But when the Thief had shifted the conversation, asking who the father of the Lady’s children were, she almost seemed to withdraw, uncomfortable in the idea that perhaps Rexanna shouldn’t know who it was. But she began to overcome it, and placed a name so simple that the Thief hadn’t really paid attention much to the next set of words. Ashamin. Reaching forward, Rexanna aimed to press her cream muzzle into the rose shoulder of her friend with a smile. “Oh how wonderful!” She pulled her head back, offering Hotaru a bright and wide smile. There were no feelings attached to the prior Haruspex, despite bearing his child. She hoped that perhaps Hotaru could understand that. “You can tell me anything, Hotaru. I don’t have any feelings for Ashamin, I’m happy that you two can have children that understand love.” She added in, perhaps a bit jealous. She remembered Rein, and how much she had wished for the child to grow up understanding what having a parental connection was and how he wouldn’t ever get it. She hoped that the children within her would be able to understand that. “I didn’t know he left, though. I’m sure he isn’t far.” She noted, turning her head away from her to look out upon the Steppe. “He’s the only one of my pregnancies so far that’s made it to the birth, I’m sure he’ll be there.” She smiled gently, trying to make it easier for Hotaru’s worries, and yet still unsure if the Lady knew of the Thief’s miscarriage prior to Helovia.
