It was an odd thing, after so much time, to purposefully seek out Tembovu and it certainly came with no shortage of discomfort for the painted mare. Would this conversation end in a shouting match as well? Would it involve him intimidating her by getting into her face? Would she get the king who threw his weight around or the one who smiled easily for those that weren’t her? She hoped this would go smoothly - it was happy news she was sharing, after all. Or so she hoped! Rexanna had asked her to share it so she would, of course she would, however little she cared for the company of the Elephant King.

Apparently there were some who cared for it quite a lot.

After making sure Rexanna and the twins were safely inside the Basin, Alysanne had turned south and made her way back to the Edge. There was no way to guarantee that Tembovu was even there today but she would at least try and then keep trying until she found him. He always seemed to be lurking about whenever she did not care to see him and she worried that now that she actually wanted to find him he’d prove elusive.

It was late morning when they arrived at the Edge but the forest was twilight-dark as pale grey clouds gathered in the sky, bringing chilly winds and the promise of rain or even a storm later that day. They knew he was usually spotted toward the western reaches so they started to look there - Hemlock weaving through the trees while Alysanne wandered at a more leisurely pace, her pale wings resting comfortably at her sides. Her green eyes scanned the shadowy forest, keeping watch for a large tan figure or a smaller, grey one, prepared to call out a greeting if she was not spotted by them.

Tembovu’s wariness around her whenever they had been in the same place recently made her wonder if she was not the only one who tried to ensure their meetings were few and far between. The idea of being avoided rested heavily on her and she lamented over the shambles of their once tentative friendship as she moved gracefully over the needle-covered ground.

Nature's great masterpiece : an elephant ; the only harmless great thing.
The meeting, forever eventful, had finally come to a close. His mind had turned to finding Imani, the odd-eyed Dorobian had fled not long after arriving, and he thought to seek out and ease whatever had terrified the mystic man. But as his navy eyes turned to the direction of trees where he had seen him disappear, saw the wild Korofi man following (assumedly) the same track of thought. And, upon turning his head once again, he found Alysanne calling for him.

He blinked once. Twice. His ears twitched, as if to ensure that they had heard correctly. The piebald beauty sought his company? Navy eyes grew wary, meeting her lovely green gaze that flew in the twilight light. The meeting had lasted all of the afternoon and into the evening—thus the reason he had called it in the hotter part of the day.

He sighed softly, long limbs of ivory and ebony slowly approaching the healer as he heeded her call. Spreading a lopsided, if small, grin across his pale muzzle, his head cocked slightly as he looked at the woman who had both healed him and left him with shameful actions. Mentally he steadied himself—he would not succumb to his anger with her, again. That was neither Kingly, fair, or just.

“Hello Alysanne,” his low rumble was warm, even if it did not entirely meet his eyes, “What can I do for you?” Mbwene slowly approached, eyes outright wary as she stared at the woman who had healed her bonded and driven him to his knees. Her wrinkled face was sharp, ears out and waving slightly as she cooled her body and dried her wet skin. Her gaze glanced to Hemlock, but this was a companion with whom she hadn’t interacted. And, given her demeanor, the distrust for the owl’s bonded leaked over into the owl.

If nothing else, the surprise she expected to see on Tembovu’s face was worth whatever this conversation would bring.  A lopsided smile was on his face and she felt one forming on her own that matched it. How long had it been since she had willingly asked for an audience with him, after all?

Well, actually, it had never happened.

There was no anger in her now but she was prepared for it - prepared to beat Tembovu senseless if he didn’t take the news she needed to share with him well. “Hello Tembovu, Mbwene. How are you?” She was stalling and she could feel herself stalling - would it be as obvious to him? Asking them how they were as if they were just two ordinary herdmates! She offered the small elephant a smile in greeting though she didn’t expect much in return. Hemlock too hooted a small hello but he remained where he was - feeling just as wary about the bonded pair before them as they were about him and Alysanne.

“I…” But her apologies stuck in her throat. She had wanted to say them now, before things grew into a storm like they always seemed to do with the two of them. Only… delaying in the sharing of why she had come here was selfish. For whatever reason. If this went well, perhaps, they could talk later. “I’ve got some news for you.” She was watching him warily - believing this was good news but uncertain about how he would take it. Fathers were, in her experience, rather fickle creatures and there was no way to be certain. Her friend had seemed so blindly in love with the stallion before her - a fact that she did not quite understand - but she had no idea how he felt. “Rexanna, she’s had twins. Your twins.” She clarified although she had no idea whether there really needed to be clarification. A smile was forming on her face now as she thought of them, remembered how incredibly obvious it was who had sired them. Born healthy and safe, even if their birth had been triggered a bit too soon.

But these were stories that could be saved for another time, or that could be told to him by someone that he actually cared for, so she quickly continued and gave him the facts. “A boy and a girl. They’re in the Basin - Rex asked me to let you know after I saw them there safely.” Her green eyes never left his face as she spoke, calm but wary.

She hoped he wouldn’t need any encouragement, but the words came all the same. “You should go, but only if you're going to be good to her. She had a hard birth and I don't want you stressing her out.” She meant the warning in her words and her tone, but it was accompanied by a smile that (hopefully) softened it somewhat. Foals and families would forever be her weakness and, it seemed, had a power to make even unpleasant company enjoyable enough to tease.

Doctor's orders.”

Nature's great masterpiece : an elephant ; the only harmless great thing.
Where was her anger? Was she nervous? His navy blue eyes grow equal parts curious and concerned as she greets both himself and Mbwene with a smile as pleasant as his own.

Was something wrong?

That, truthfully, was the only answer the King’s mind could come up with to explain the healer’s sudden, strained audience with him. So, in answer to her greeting and asking after him, he replied, “I am fine. Is everything alright?” His head cocked, concern now wholly replacing the wariness in the creased, black skin of his face.

It was heightened by her stuttering over words, and he shifted uneasily, preparing himself for whatever was troubling the woman. They may not be friends, but she was still apart of the Edge— and, despite their previous angry words and disrespect, he still did not want harm to befall the woman. Naerys ran through his mind; he hadn’t seen the healer’s daughter in awhile. Was she in injured? Captured? He could go himself, or send Mauja—

“Rexanna, she’s had twins. Your twins.”

He stilled, a elephantine statue. Everything was silent in the Elephant’s head. Save for the slow, strong beat of his heart. It thumped in his ears, but all else faded away. Twins. His navy eyes were round, shocked, amazed. His thick, black lips had parted, though no air passed through his nostrils. He was stunned.

Twins?” he whispered in disbelief. A boy and a girl—in the Basin. The Basin? Why hadn’t Rexanna come to him when she found herself pregnant? Why was he not there with his children?! Despite these questioning thoughts, a warmth bloomed in his chest.

He and Rexanna had children. He was a father once again. A grin spread across his muzzle, despite the undercurrent of worry in his eyes, “A hard birth?” He hadn’t been there for the birth and the thought send a cold rock to burst the bubble of warmth in his barrel, “Is she alright?” Though, despite his question, he was already turning on his haunches, aiming towards the north.

“I trust you and Mauja with the Edge in my absence,” was his final, brisk rumble over his shoulder as sweeping strides being to charge towards the cool mountains of the north, following the doctor’s orders.

Alysanne’s smile only grew as she watched Tembovu’s reaction to the news. And why shouldn’t she smile? It wasn’t the anger that she had come to expect from him - though perhaps he might have been a little annoyed that he was receiving this information from a third party and not someone else. But Alysanne had been there at the birth, she wasn’t just spreading around gossip that she had heard.

He seemed intent on parroting her for a moment, repeating key phrases that his mind was settling around. If she was being honest with herself, she could hardly deny that it was fun watching him squirm just a little bit. She had dropped a verifiable bomb on him. And then finally, there was the smile she had been hoping for.

Proof that there was at least a shadow of a soul hidden within him!

Unsurprisingly, he picked up on the mention of a hard birth and inquired after it - but he was already departing as he spoke the words. So she called out a quick - “She’s fine, I promise!” - which might alleviate at least some of his worry. There was an explanation about the birth ready, of course, but the new father was determined to leave right that moment - and she was glad for it. Both because he would go find Rexanna and because a speedy departure meant that they had successfully gotten through an entire (if short) conversation without screaming in each other’s faces.

It was a small victory but a welcome one.

“Congratulations, Tembovu.” She wished after him with a smile, her words quiet and unlikely to have been heard by the departing King but she meant it all the same.
