The day was nearly over when the filly sought out her mother. That massive orb called "the sun" was sinking rapidly in the west, casting red-orange hues with its lingering caress. A gentle breeze flowed across the desert, rare and lovely, dispelling the blistering heat, if only for a moment. The heat didn't bother the girl - she was, after all, the daughter of Gaucho the WildFire - and thus the gust of wind failed to distract her from her mission. You see, she searched for Sohalia for a reason - not for a silly, petty thing like dinner (though her stomach was rumbling, reminding her that perhaps that wouldn't be such a bad idea), but for an actual problem.

Well, "problem" might be a bit too strong a word.

Let's start at the beginning.

From the time she was born, young Vinati had seen things that others could not. Of course, she didn't know that no one else could see the lingering corporeal beings that surrounded most of the grown-ups and several of the foals. For several weeks, she had wandered around, seeing the see-through horses, assuming that everyone else saw exactly what she did. After all, she had seen them since birth - it was normal (at least to her). She could not imagine looking at, say, Ma, and seeing nothing surrounding her.

And then, one day, she heard someone refer to her as talking to "imaginary friends." Well! For starters, the creatures that she saw weren't her friends. They wouldn't even talk to her, for goodness' sake! The girl assumed that the stranger (someone in the herd, though she knew few names and didn't care to learn them yet) had heard her trying to communicate with the misty-eyed ghosts, back before she realized that they couldn't even see her, much less hear her. In any case, they weren't imaginary, and the thought that she could simply be seeing things (NO, she told herself angrily) put her in quite the mood.

So she did the one thing that every foal knows they can always do: she went searching for her mother, who was sure to have all the answers.

SOHALIA

The youngest daughter of Gaucho the WildFire and Sohalia the Transcended thought herself much more independent than she actually was. Only a week old, the child roamed incessantly, imagining that she escaped her mother's notice in order to explore the great, wide desert that stretched before her. In reality, Sohalia was only ever a short distance away, one keen eye trained on her wayward daughter. So far, the girl had not yet attempted to wander very far beyond the edge of the trees surrounding the oasis - something that her mother was remarkably grateful for. One day, she knew, Vinati would want to know what lay beyond the borders of the Dragon's Throat. Someday, the Transcended would have to let her explore.

Today, though, she was only a moment's walk away from the child - so when Vinati came searching, she was waiting with a raised brow and a gentle smile, prepared for whatever her youngest daughter might need. At first, she thought it was simply dinner time. After all, the sun was beginning to sink in the west, and it had become customary for Vinati to seek one last meal before dark so that she would be ready for bedtime. When she saw the girl's face, however, she realized that the filly was on a mission, and her mother was the target.

"Ma shekhikhi," she crooned to her daughter, referring to her using the pet name that she had given all of Gaucho's children. My little light. Ah, and so they were - especially in the midst of the tumultuous relationship that she had with their father. She had returned, and he had claimed her once again as his - but where was he now? The dove shook the thought away. "What is it, dear heart? You look... thoughtful."

HOW THE F(*&CK DID I MISS THIS THREAD. SETTING THIS IN SOME AMBIGUOUS TIME FRAME??

Once upon a time she had been called little ghost by her mother, but of course, she had no mother now. Her mother had vanished very much like a ghost, only the girl knew that she didn't inherit her ghostly abilities from Ampere.

The girl wasn't a little ghost any longer, but a lost ghost, both because she had grown up considerably since having been given that nickname, but also because of her wayward parents.

Tae and her two black canine companions stalked around the Throat as they were want to do. The mandible-marked filly's pale eyes scoured over the sands for anything of interest, while her two hellish companions searched for bones or possibly anything alive that they might reasonably catch and eat. Each of their pursuits seemed to be unsuccessful, until Tae rounded a dune and spied Sohalia and Vinati below.

Now, the girl knew Vinati was her half-sibling, and knew of her Father's on again off again romance with the pale mare. She knew Sohalia had ruled along side Gaucho and then hadn't. The girl knew a long list of facts about the two before her, but nothing of any real importance, and she certainly didn't know anything about the similarity of the magics that they all possessed.

Tae continued on her way, skirting the pair warily, half expecting to be chased off as the child of Sohalia's (ex? current?) mate's bastard offspring. This nervousness allowed the magic in her bones to take hold, and the outline of her body began to slowly bleed away, making the girl look more like a ghost becoming a girl, rather than a being composed of flesh adn blood.

"We're just passing through." She offered, half testily to show her lack of fear (which her magic betrayed) but also to let the duo know she wasn't eavesdropping or planning on stopping, so they needn't worry.

It did not take long for Vinati to locate her mother. Try as she might to gain her independence, to act like she was more than just a child, she was mere weeks old, and Sohalia was never far away. In this particular instance, that was something that the girl appreciated. What she needed was important, and every additional moment that it took for her to find the Transcended was another moment that Vinati had no answers. "Mai!" the girl exclaimed imperiously as she approached the mare, who greeting her with amusement. "I have to ask you something."

Just then, a mandible-marked filly accompanied by two large (to the child) canines crested a dune, approaching almost warily. Vinati was unconcerned by this, impatiently watching as the trio grew closer. As they did, though, the sand princess realized that the other filly was sort of... fading. As though perhaps she, too, was one of those imaginary friends that everyone kept assuming that Vinati had. "Maaii," Vinati whined then, turning her gaze back to her mother, who shushed her gently.

The stranger - the spirit-girl - kept coming, until finally she was close enough to snap out a sentence. Vinati, relieved to find that, despite the girl's appearance, she was a real, living creature, relaxed. Sohalia invited her to stay. Vinati, all the while, was entirely oblivious to the intricacies of the social situation around her. Once their company seemed settled, she huffed demandingly and said, "Mai, there are pegasi around you. I want to know who they are."

SOHALIA

And so the mare watched with amusement as her youngest child approached, rather imperiously insisting that she had something (presumably of the utmost importance) to ask her mother. Sohalia raised an eyebrow, intrigued. Clearly something was bothering young Vinati, and the mare hadn't the foggiest idea what that might be. She was just about to invite the girl to explain herself when a new trio appeared in the sands: a mandible-marked filly that Sohalia identified as one of Gaucho's, accompanied by two dark canines. For a moment, she tensed - would the wolf and the hellhound hurt her child? - but then she forced herself to relax. There was nothing threatening about a yearling, and a half-sister to Vinati at that. If nothing else, Gaucho had always had strong ties to family. It would make sense for him to had passed that along to all of his children, no matter who their mother was.

Still, the not-so-little ghost approached almost aggressively, though the flickering and fading of her pelt betrayed her emotion. Sohalia eyed her curiously. Gaucho had no connection to the spirit world, at least not to her knowledge - and yet here was his daughter with a magic that was mysteriously similar to her own. A part of her wondered at the irony of it all. Perhaps it was a sign, a reminder that the girl did not choose her parents and so should not be held responsible for their sins. Despite the vaguely rude, aggressive manner of her greeting, Sohalia merely smiled. "You are welcome to stay, my dear, if it is companionship you seek." And with that, she turned her attention back to her daughter.

A daughter who was insisting that there were other pegasi around her.

The mare looked over her left shoulder, then her right, carefully and suspiciously surveying the landscape. "Ma shekhikhi, what do you mean? There is no one here except you and I, and our new friend." Her brow creased, troubled and concerned with her daughter's words. What did she think she was seeing? "What do these pegasi looks like, my love?"

As she was directly addressed by her half sibling, and then by Sohalia, her body burst entirely away, leaving only a ghostly outline of where her flesh actually was. Her small ears moved backwards slightly, annoyed that her magic could so easily reveal what it was she was actually feeling, but then she forced herself to relax. Much like Sohalia's line of thinking, the girl had inherited her Father's respect and duty-filled attitude towards family. And while Sohalia wasn't family (though by some bizarre extension, she more or less was, let's be honest), the filly certainly was.

Besides, the girl couldn't resist talk of ghosts, not when she practically was one herself.

Tae's shoulders shrugged slightly at Sohalia's suggestion of companionship, as if the word was embarrassingly emotional for the almost-teenage girl to hear, but she did stray closer. The black canines are her side looked emotionlessly towards the Transcended and her child, but offered no outward sign of aggression.

"I'm Tae by the way. " She offered almost sheepishly, unsure of whether or not the Transcended kept a tally of the children Gaucho sired without her.

"You see ghosts?" Tae asked turning to the filly, her voice bright with intrigue. Both she and her twin could ... manipulate dead things, but that was the extent of their powers, despite the fact that the passive magic that worked on their limbs might have suggested otherwise. Then another thought occurred to her - would this half-sister of hers be able to help she and Grusha locate bones? If Vinati could tell when a soul had left a body by seeing them as a ghost, surely that would also indicate where the body itself remained? Tae felt her heart-beat quicken with excitement.

For a filly of only a few weeks of age, this was turning into quite the interesting day. As the mandible-marked filly and her duo of canines made their way closer, the other girl almost completely disappeared. Although Vinati knew that she was real - after all, Sohalia saw her, too - it made her wonder if perhaps she wasn't crazy after all. Maybe she was only seeing pegasi that had whatever strange magic clearly ran through the strange girl's veins! Yes! That must be it! That explained everything! A brilliant smile bubbled to her lips, shot gleefully at the newest member of their little group. "I'm Vinati!" She was oblivious to Tae's discomfort, unaware of her mother's mixed feelings about the encounter. After all, it wasn't every day that she made a new friend - and what an interesting one at that!

"Well," she continued, turning back to her mother, her tone considerably less whiny than it had been a few moments before. "There's, um, four of them right now. There's a brown stallion and a sort of creamy-colored mare and a tiny foal -" Which was funny, coming from her, seeing as she was quite small and young, herself. "- and a mare that looks a lot like the first, only younger." She tilted her head, glancing back and forth between Sohalia and Tae. Just as her mother's brows rose in apparent understanding and wonder, Tae spoke, pulling the younger filly's attention to her.

"You see ghosts?" she asked, sounded interested and excited.

"Ghosts?" Vinati repeated, confusion pulling her tiny brow down as she frowned. What was a ghost? The subject of death and the afterlife had yet to interest the young girl, and she honestly couldn't figure out what Tae was insinuating. Still, not wanting to seem stupid in front of her new friend, Vinati tilted her head thoughtfully to the side. It was at that moment that Sohalia spoke up - apparently she had taken a trip to the spirit world in the pause that had followed Tae's question - to explain. "Oh," Vinati said when her mother had finished. "Then yes, I see ghosts!" She turned to Tae with a brilliant, beaming smile, too young to fully grasp the implications of her ability.

SOHALIA

Much to Sohalia's surprise and chagrin, the little ghost girl seemed only to grow more distressed at her greeting. Her body paled, fading almost into the background, and a sudden, maternal need to comfort the child rose unbidden in her mind. Unless Tae could control her magic - and it didn't appear that she could, though Sohalia had been wrong many times before - it was probable that some strong emotion influenced her transparency. Or maybe it was just random, and the hormones that had run rampant since the beginning of the dove's pregnancy were still muddling her mind.

In any case, she watched her daughter's eager acceptance of the spirit child with pride. Vinati did not shy away or ask inappropriate questions about the state of the girl - she merely accepted it as it was, continuing on with her business as though an almost-ghost joining one's conversation was the most natural thing in the world. Of course, she was about to find out that it was normal, at least for Vinati. "I am Sohalia," she managed to introduce herself properly just before Vinati took over the conversation.

At the girl's descriptions, Sohalia's brow furrowed, her mind ticking quickly through the possibilities. The figures that Vinati saw... suddenly the mare's brows rose with wonder. They were her parents and her deceased children. The dove was almost sure of it. Allowing the children a moment to themselves, the mare closed her eyes and did the mental trick that allowed her to step into the spirit world. When she opened her eyes, it was to a black and white replica of the Dragon's Throat, where, as expected, she was surrounded by the figures of her parents and firstborn children. With a quick, apologetic smile (she would stay longer if she could), Sohalia blinked back into the living.

"A ghost is a remnant of someone who is gone, a fragment of their soul that cannot leave this world because it is tied to the loved ones of the deceased," she explained to the best of her ability. Many thought that ghosts only existed if they had unfinished business, or that they were mischievous pranksters, left on earth without meaning. They were wrong. Ghosts and spirits were synonymous, and they only existed because of those they left behind.

"What you see when you look at me - and, I would wager, anyone else - is the spirit of their lost loved ones. For me, that would be my parents - the chestnut and the older champagne mare - and my firstborn children, Diniel and Skysong." Her voice dropped at that, old sadness creeping into her eyes at the memories. The wounds that the children had left behind were mostly healed, but every now and then there was a moment that pulled the scabs off all over again. "What about others in the herd? Do you see ghosts around them, too?"

The pale-eyed filly nodded, storing Vinati's name for future use. She liked the sound of it ... was it from her Father's language? If it was, it was a word that she hadn't heard before. As Sohalia introduced herself as well, Tae's ears faltered slightly, sliding backwards a touch but not out of anger. Her mouth twisted in a ' / ' shape, as she nodded once again. "I know who you are." She replied softly, not able to meet Sohalia's gaze. The girl, still too young to know much of politics and romance, was unsure if she was supposed to hate the Transcended and be hated in return. She was born out of Gaucho's other woman, or at least what must look like the other woman to Sohalia. In a fairy tale, Sohalia would be the wicked step mother, wanting to take everything for herself and crush the remnants of her man's past. Right? And yet so far, the pale mare had been so kind. It made Tae feel comfortable and reassured, which in turn made her even more confused.

Tae listened as the conversation shifted back to ghosts. It was clear to her that there were things happening that she wasn't privy to - from the way Vinati's eyes seemed to focus on things which Tae did not see, to how Sohalia seemed to ... to what? Tae couldn't describe it, other than that the mare's eyes seemed to glaze over for a moment.

As she watched this silent exchange, a thought struck her. She didn't actually know how her magic worked - only that she could create ghostly images that could do things for her. Was it possible that they were real? That a ghost was behind her magic?

Waiting until an appropriate time to interrupt, Tae posed her question. " Do you see any ghosts - real ones that is - when I do this?" Tae turned her pale stare towards a rock. Suddenly a ghostly apparition appeared - an eagle, for she had seen her father make fire eagles enough times in the past to be able to replicate one now - and bayed it move the stone. The ghost eagle picked up the rock, held it in the air, and then dropped it. Expectantly, Tae turned to look at Vinati, wondering what it was she would see. Would there be the ghost of an eagle there? Or was it 'just' magic?

The little sand princess was blissfully unaware of the awkwardness that was present between her mother and the spirit-girl, and if she had been aware, she would have been uninterested. Why would it have mattered who was who and what was what? They were all here now, and weren't they having a perfectly good time? Besides, there were much more pressing matters to attend to - like the fact that Vinati could see ghosts, Tae could create them, and Sohalia could travel into their world. They were so similar, and yet so different - and something about the moment that they were sharing captured Vinati's artistic eye, even if she wouldn't have a clue how to translate it into crystal.

Her reverie was interrupted by her mother's questions, to which the filly responded, "Most of the herd has them." She didn't really understand why her mother was so sad. If these ghosts were simply lost souls, then they would find their way back eventually, wouldn't they? "But they don't even know they're there." Suddenly, she thought she understood Sohalia's sorrow. Their loved ones were with them, close enough to touch, and yet they had no idea. They just went on thinking they were lost forever. That had to be why her mother was so upset!

Just then, Tae interrupted with her own query. Her pale gaze directed Vinati's attention to a nearby stone, upon which a ghostly eagle appeared. The little filly cocked her head to the side, glancing back and forth between Tae and her magical creature. There was nothing else - it would seem that Tae had created the ghost out of thin air! "Woah!" Vinati squealed gleefully. "How did you do that?" A moment passed, and she realized that she hadn't answered the girl's question. "Oh - no, I don't think so. I see Mai's ghosts, but otherwise it's just you, me, and the eagle you made." Sohalia, who had been momentarily quiet, spoke up just then, agreeing with her daughter.

SOHALIA

"I know who you are." Sohalia's brows raised almost imperceptibly. The statement would have made more sense if she knew who the girl's mother was, or if they had met before. It might even have made sense if Sohalia was still a high-ranking member of the herd - if she was still a Forger, perhaps. But she was nothing and no one at the moment, little more than another face in the crowd. She had plans to approach Cera about returning to crafting, but otherwise... How would Tae have heard of her, if it wasn't from one of her parents? Somehow, she doubted that Gaucho would have discussed his first lover with another (she was the first, wasn't she?), especially his young daughter.

By the time she had recovered from her shock, passed into the spirit world, and returned to explain what a ghost really was, the moment was almost forgotten. It seemed that Vinati had inherited Sohalia's magic, though it was much stronger in the young sand princess than it was in her mother. The Transcended had to concentrate to enter the spirit world, had to seek out the ghosts that lingered nearby. Vinati seemed to just see them, constantly, as though they were still among the living. It seemed that her little-used gift would be something that would shape her daughter, for better or worse.

Tae's magic, on the other hand, was a surprise. Though she knew that the girl had gotten her phantasmal magic from somewhere, she had not expected it to be powerful enough to actually conjure a phantom. Even if - as Sohalia suspected - it was just an apparition, a fake spirit drawn of the girl's will, it was still intriguing. Not for the first time, the dove wondered who the filly's mother was, but she certainly wasn't going to ask. It almost seemed that the girl was warming to their company, and she had no desire to chase her away. After all, none of her parents' mess was her fault, and, without meaning to, the Transcended was actually enjoying the child's presence.

For the second time, Sohalia slipped into the spirit world, looking around the monochrome world as though she might find an eagle perched upon the rock. But there was nothing there. Satisfied that a spirit hadn't taken to following Tae - or, worse, possessing her (was that even possible?) - Sohalia again made her apologies to her loved ones and left. Back in the real world, Vinati was telling Tae that her ghost eagle wasn't a 'real' ghost, and Sohalia soon spoke to confirm this. "Your ghost is an apparition - it seems to be created of your imagination, of your will. It is not tied to anything otherworldly," she told the girl. "I am able to visit the spirit world. In doing so just now, I looked at the rock and at you - there are no ghosts around you just now, my dear." Though her magic was unreliable in some ways (after all, ghosts can move), she was always able to see any spirits that lingered nearby. She wondered if it was the same for Vinati - if she saw only the nearby spirits, or if she saw the embodiment of anyone that a living equine had lost, regardless of the physical location of the spirit.

As both the mare and filly - her half sister if she was being precise - confirmed that her magic was just that, magic, and not some insight into the spirit world, Tae frowned. She hadn't ever really thought her magic was anything more than it was but ... wouldn't it be neat if it was? Lips pursed in a childish display of disappointment, Tae nodded her mandible-marked face and sighed. "I see." She offered with a small shrug of her shoulders. It made sense after all, neither Gaucho nor Ampere had any sort of magic that actually had to do with the dead. Her mother could manipulate organic matter, and in a sense, that's all Tae was doing as well. It just looked different when she did it.

Bored of this uninteresting conversation, Hel lunged forward, snapping his impressive set of teeth towards the phantom eagle. Tae would often tease him with ghosts that would pick up sticks and hurl them around for him to chase. He thought that if perhaps he could bite this eagle (or at least snap his teeth through it) that Tae might give up this boring activity and do something more interesting. Something that involved sticks.

Tae however wasn't interested in leaving just yet, at least, not while Sohalia  and Vinati were still talking about ghostly things. As the hellhound's teeth broke through the eagle, it dipped low and tossed sand towards the black canine before disappearing entirely.

Go fight your brother. Tae mentally commanded. Mal, the smaller of the two, was pasted out on the sands. At the sound of the hellhound coming towards him he raised his head, growled once, and put it back down. He clearly was not in the mood to fight. Sulkily the hellhound bit the wolf anyways, grabbing a scruff of his neck and tugging. Seeing that this received no response, he grumbled, and layed down as well.

Turning back to Vinati and Sohalia, Tae perked her ears forward again, already having forgotten her disappointment. "So you both see ghosts, but in different ways? And you can see them all the time?" This latter question was directed towards Vinati. "Or at least.. when they're around to see?"

Tae's companions caught and held the little sand princess's attention as they tussled briefly in the sand.  The girl wondered where everyone found these companions of theirs.  Mai had Astraeus; Ave had Mara and Vorsa; and even Tae, young though she was, had managed to claim two wolf creatures.  Did bonding happen at random?  Or was Tae simply more adventurous than her younger half-sister?  Would Vinati, too, find a companion to call her own one day?

Ah, but that wasn't important just now.  What was important was that the girl finally understood an imperative part of herself.  She nodded in response to Tae's last question.  "I see them almost all the time," she agreed.  Then she shrugged, as though this were the most normal conversation in the world.  "I guess I don't see them around some horses because they don't have any ghosts?"  With this, she looked to her mother, wondering if such a thing were true.  Why would some horses have ghosts while others didn't?  It just didn't make any sense.

She wondered if it was like companions and how not everyone had those either.  It almost started to make sense to the girl - how some horses might have lost someone they loved, while she, for example, was still surrounded by everyone she had ever known.  Maybe one day she would get a better explanation, but until then, she would simply enjoy the fact that she got to see a side of life (or death) that no one around her ever would.

SOHALIA

The movement of the hellhound caught the mare's eye just before the creature lunged toward the ghostly eagle. It seemed as though the beast wanted to catch the bird, an assumption that gave Astraeus, who had fluttered down to land upon Sohalia's rump, pause. The wakiya squawked indignantly, sparks flaring to life as he chittered at the hellhound as though to warn him not to try that with a living creature. "Hush, ma shekhikhi," Sohalia scolded gently. Silently, she added, There is no threat to you. With her urging, the zephyr fell silent, having the good grace to look slightly abashed.

As the hounds fell to play-fighting one another, the mare turned her mind back to the conversation at hand. "It would seem that you are correct, my dear," she confirmed, smiling kindly at Tae. After Vinati finished speaking, she continued. "I think that it is safe to say that Vinati inherited her ability to see ghosts from me, though her abilities are admittedly much stronger than my own. Where I am limited and must concentrate to look for nearby spirits, it seems that Vinati can see any spirits associated with any person at any given time. So yes, dear heart, I do believe the only time you see no spirits is when someone has not experienced loss."

In the western sky, the sun was beginning to set. It had been a long day, and the mare was looking forward to finding their favorite spot by the oasis to settle down for the evening. No doubt Vinati would find ways to amuse herself until she became too tired to stay awake, but Sohalia wanted only to graze and rest.
