The smell of brine, the cry of gulls, the restless winds – divine. Nothing could replace the turbulent air and spitting sea. It was perfect. The Riptide felt alive here in the harsh climate, warm, despite the breeze. There was a principal Ru wanted to follow, a way of life she set on pursuing – even if it meant she would fend for herself in the wilds. It made sense to her, it challenged her, and she’d never felt this whole since.

At first it almost seemed unbearable, to live on when loved ones would never return. That security blanket had left a long, long time ago – life times ago. And like the ocean, she could change on a dime – rejoicing the possibilities of said freedom. Or suffering from the nights that would never end. It was the silence, and the ghosts of those who nurtured and soothed the little one. Haunted by their faces, the stars that shined brightly and bled with yearning. Why hadn’t she joined them, too?

Why must the living keep on living?

Questions filled her head, unanswered, burning questions that eventually soothed as she fell asleep. Come morning, she could take respite in the sun – and think nothing more of death and plain uncertainty. She just was. Alive, breathing, on the quest to self-sufficiency and discovery – of all things, of everyone and everything. Our heroine would find a way.

Or at least, make do with what she had.

~

Today was one of those lazy days. After making her descent to the Riptide Isles – a rocky, turbulent landing – she explored the lands. Since there are several islands to choose from – for our heroine required a base of operations – she filled her senses with as much as she could. Besides the ocean air, the cracked and departed mountain pieces were full and rich of green forests. There was humid air in its depths, the subtle hint of fruit that hit her nostrils, with the obscure mixture of other equine – or perhaps predators, unknown.

She followed the cliff edge of this particular island, where the wind was the harshest, and the drop – sheer and unpredictable. Ru took enough caution to respect the boundaries of the cliff. Yet, it was worth the view to tempt the edges, to crawl towards the sharp height, and feel as one’s heart spike and breath hitch – caught and lost with each gust. Sometimes the air left you entirely, stolen and punched out from one’s nostrils. Familiar with the sensation – especially during high dives – Ru felt nothing of it.

The girl merely offered a small smile, and settled herself down. Tucked a fore leg underneath her, while the other dangled from the edge.

White, porcelain peachy feathers along her neck fanned out. It was lovely to have the wind graze through them. She closed her eyes, and angled her neck along the stream – the currents pulsing through them. It felt like someone was actually nuzzling along the spine of her neck.

Comfort was its association. Remnants of security, the need for physical contact.

This could be paradise.

This could be her little rock in the ocean.

Home.

Sabia
Dull.

That is what word Sabia used when she woke in the morning, there just was something heavy lingering inside the rose grey mare. Like her entire body was tied down with boulders the size of the sun, as she walked among her herd mates she couldn't help but feel hollow and alone on the inside. It was the sadness that ate away at her each morning she decided to get up, carving and hollowing out her insides until she was nothing more than a hollow shell.

Sabia would smile and nod, promising she was alright and that she would love to talk later, no one looked close enough to see the cracks. And that was okay, so Sabia told herself anyways she would hate to burden others with her problems.

Today however she couldn't take it anymore, she needed a break from all the happy people. Sabia needed to find a place where she could be sad and depressed alone, hell maybe she would just end it all and save horses the trouble of pretending to care. The rose grey mare took to the sky leaving the Throat behind in a storm of sand and just kept flying, letting her wings take her where they wished.

It didn't take long for Sabia to come across the islands, they stood out like sore thumbs. Suddenly a thought came to Sabia; 'perhaps this is a perfect place to end it' the mare was sure no one lived on the islands so it would be too late by the time someone found her.

With a snort Sabia went towards one of the islands and landed near a large rock formation, there seemed to be more than one of the rock formations that lead to cliffs.

Perfect.

Sabia walked close to a cliff edge, so close her stone colored hooves knocked small pebbles off and sent then spiraling downwards into nothingness. The wind blew her mane and tail all over the place sending honey brown waves flying in the air, she stretched out her wings and allowed herself one last peaceful moment.

This would be the last time she would use her wings or feel the winds blow through her feathers. Sabia opened her eyes and lifted a front leg to plunge off then-

Was that a Pegasus?

From the corner of her eyes Sabia caught a winged creature lying on a cliffs edge, clearly oblivious to Sabia's presence. Stuck in place Sabia's eyes went wide.

"Oh bloody hell..." manedged to escape her maw in surprise, it didn't come out rude just astonished. The gods simply wouldn't let her die.

Put me through hell again, I miss the fire.

Amongst the restless winds the girl picks up on a form. A speck caught in the periphery. She twists her neck and lands her gaze upon the rose-grey mare. She remains indifferent at first glance, merely soaking up the sight of the stranger. Her first thought, why?

Why is she here?

Ru’s peace is shattered by the soul’s approach – despite the fair bit of room between them. Brows furrowed as those eyes appraised the raised forelimb, and the taught muscles constricting about the stranger. Who would take off at such a steep height? With the winds, their unpredictable movements - foolish, the girl thought.

And yet she remained curious, wondering what they would do next. Why they had stopped, would they follow through and bear the uncertainty of the cliffs? The youth’s tail flicked idly, her steady gaze unyielding. Not once, did she assume the mare’s true intentions. Only that perhaps, they enjoyed the thrill – despite the cost.

A cost Ru was unfamiliar with. All things seemed possible with certain restrictions. Though, the youth was not so inclined to delve deeper into the possibilities of such a rash decision. Even if the expanse between her kin grew larger with each passing day. There was a certain satisfaction being out on her own; independence.

Pure, undefined freedom, providing the salve for the wounds that ached during those nights.

So it was curious to see the stranger then. Odd to have company, permitting their strange behaviors. As she stared, she nickered out to them in the harsh wind – perchance they would join her instead.

Sabia
Sabia stood there and took in the other horse simply lying there, she was an odd yet beautiful sight. For a few seconds Sabia thought about just ignoring the other horse and jumping off but she quickly cut that thought off she wasn't one to leave others haunted. So Sabia stood there frozen watching the mare watch her uncertain of what would happen next.

What did happen surprised the mare, the other Pegasus gave a nicker. A welcoming noise that Sabia couldn't help but call back with her own nicker. Then Sabia backed slowly away from the edge and went over to the other mare up close Sabia realized the mare was very young compared to herself, with a soft smile Sabia settled herself to the ground.

She did not feel threatened because why would a young mare call her over to only hurt her? Adjusting her cream feathers at her sides Sabia finally spoke "I'm sure you think me crazy from that sight" she explained, "I'm not crazy, not truly I'm just...." The mare realized she was babbling on so she stopped herself and gave a small sigh "I'm Sabia of the Dragon's Throat you are?" She asked politely.

From the scent of the young mare she wasn't part of a herd Sabia knew, instantly she was curious to know more about her. After all the young girl did just unknowingly save Sabia from herself.
Put me through hell again, I miss the fire.
Notes:  Ru just unknowingly saved her life.

Curiosity danced along her milky eyes, like a bright flame igniting over oil. Catching quickly, burning brilliant as she consumed the little changes in the figure. For a moment Ru wondered if the mare was frightened by her appearance. The sudden stillness, the tightness in the mare’s body – from muscle to bony prominence – signaled flight over fight. It provided the youth a moment to really note the rust tinged tips of those wings. Or the whimsical flow of honeyed mane and tail.

Pretty.

Besides the peculiar warm tone to her coat, Ru is drawn to the shredded ends of that right ear. Only for a few seconds, before the other heeds her call – breaking the girl’s concentration, tugging her back into the plane of reality.

Despite the previous tension, the mare appears adamant to ignore its cause. A soft smile displays neatly upon that face, a wary sign. The stranger joins her, and from there on – Ru realizes before she speaks – that they are Dragon’s Throat folk. Ru can smell that particular dust, it makes her nose flare with indignation. A dull pain that comes and goes, settles gently against the youth’s heart.

One of them.

Though it seems the mask, the charade of smiles dwindles when the mare takes on words to speak. The girl giggles with a cruel grin. Whatever seems to be bothering them is lost in the confusion of words – hesitant words that drift with the wind without any true course or purpose.

Just as the mare drifts off, the grin nearly dissolves along Ru’s façade. What’s left of it brings her lips to a purse, allowing her eyes to look out ahead of them. Grasping the dagger ends of earth that stand against the ocean; listening to the roar that erupts from their elemental struggle.

Inevitably the mare, Sabia, asks a question. But there isn’t much to say. Ru shrugs plainly, shaking her head. A wing instead restlessly lifts and extends to point at the scenery before them. Far more interesting than her name; beautiful, wicked storm that is the Isles. She turns her head to Sabia – a curious, gentle coo rolling off her tongue.

Isn’t it beautiful here? She thought aloud, in her mind.

Those lips weakened, a careful smile emerged. Ru’s eyes finally withdrew to the whitened crests of waves, lost in the dis-jointed momentum of its dips and rises.
