The Spirits Sing Softly

For the first few days, she's forced to stay by her mother's side. Nephele is adamant on keeping both eyes on her daughters, as though letting them slip away would bring about something terrible. She's not wrong, Verro is a mischevious and fierce filly, and so is her sister, the pair of them would get into all kinds of trouble if she so much as gave them an inch. Unfortunately for Nephele, and fortunately for the dun fae, her mother has to rest sometime and so she takes that chance, as she's focused on other things to slip away as fast as her gangly but dainty limbs can take her.

Won't go far, she thinks to herself, as she disappears over the dune and away from the Oasis. Excitement thrums through her and the spirit flames on her body burn brighter for it, flaring with her small wings as they give an excited beat. Where should she go first? Which way? Was there anything fun near? She'd have to find something interesting to tell Tasokh when she finally reappeared, an apology for leaving her to deal with their over protective mother. Best case scenario, Tasokh would catch up to her, having found her own way to give their mother the slip. Lilac eyes scan over everything as she goes, wings outstretched as though they'll make her go faster with each beat they take, that the spirits and the wind will lift her flaming wings and carry her higher and higher until the other members of the throat are tiny specks in the sand. Wishful thinking, and she gave a short huff, her long lashes batted with her irritated glance, she's not yet old enough to fly like that.

Still, the dune Princess pressed on, until the rim of the oasis vanished over a particularly high wall of sand until her delicate hooves touched the rolling waters of the beach. The brightly coloured shells which littered the glossy white beach captured her attention for a few moments, the soft velvet of her muzzle nosed against a particularly pretty one that she took care to hide between the nooks of her feathers, it spiraled elegantly, like the horns on some of the none winged members of the herd she'd spied from the safety of their nest. but unlike them, it danced between shimmering colours of pink, ivory and pale lilac. Once she was sure it wouldn't slip from it's hidey hole, she turned her attention back to the Ocean. Her eyes flickered to the horizon as she watched unfamiliar creatures surface and disappear, head tilted a fraction to the side whenever their fins seemed to wave her way and she nickered back to them, as though somehow over the winds they hear her silky voice.

The day was bright and warm, the skies clear and blue overhead. Spread before her was water, white capped waves as far as the eye could see. It was not the first time that Vinati had seen the ocean, but ever since that first fateful day, she had found herself drawn to it. It was beautiful and ever-changing, though she doubted that most would be able to see the subtle differences with each passing day. She, though, was an aspiring artist, and her perception of the world was particularly keen. She could see the way the hues shifted from a deep sapphire to a light teal to a dark grey, all depending on the water's mood. In many ways, the young filly thought of the sea as a living creature, and in many regards, she was right to do so.

Her mother had warned her not to stray too far into the water, warning her of the undertow that threatened to pull even the largest of warriors out to sea. Indeed, when the two-month-old princess stepped into the waves, she could feel the water sucking and pulling at her hooves. Even as young as she was, Vinati was fairly well acquainted with death and its consequences - she could see ghosts, after all - and so she listened to Sohalia's warnings, staying well clear of the strong tides. It was of her limited naive youthful opinion that some of the most beautiful things were also the most dangerous. Why, just look at her ave!

The girl had come to stand upon the rocky shores of the beach again, wandering here and there and admiring the varying shades of blue before her. She wanted to stay long enough to see the sun set - that was her favorite time of day, when the ocean danced a fiery orange and the skies reflected its effervescence. For now, though, she was content to follow the shore, skipping this way and that, periodically stopping to see what kinds of shapes she could draw in the sand if she dragged her hoof just right.

And so it was that she found the lass that she would one day come to know as her half-sister.

The filly, even younger and smaller than Vinati, was seemingly entranced by something out to sea. As the little sand princess made her way closer, she glanced over the waves to spy some kind of odd creatures surfacing, their fins sticking into the air. A small gasp escaped her just as the younger girl nickered; Vinati's attention turned back to her newfound companion, a wide grin on her face. "Hello!" She kept one ear tilted towards the ocean, peeking every now and then towards the smooth, fish-like creatures in the water. "Whatcha doin'?"

The Spirits Sing Softly

Verro might've just missed the voice of the fellow sand Princess, if she hadn't come into view out of the corner of her eye. The whales, which her mother would tell her later, demanded her attention for the effortless grace they moved with, like the way Pegasi danced in the sky over the throat. It was a dance she would one day partake in, where there horses in the water too? Which wished they moved with the grace their much bigger neighbors had?

Her head turned towards the filly, and a smile painted her delicate maw. "Hi!" Her greeting was equally chirpy, despite her mother's warnings for her to be careful around strangers, young and old. She would of gotten bored on her own, no matter how much she already loved watching the leviathans, everything was always better with company. She'd much rather have the company of someone her own age, than some of the older, grumpier mares and stallions. "I was watching them." One wing extended to point a hued feather toward the breaching whales. "I've never seen them before." Which wasn't saying much, she was only a few days old after all. "Have you?"

As she glanced at her new found friend, she couldn't help but note the similarities. That they were both painted in delicate shades of dun, different from the other colours which mottled their fellow herd members, their unusual barring even matched up in places. She might've been days old, but she had seen many of the Throat Members by the Oasis, and none of them had looked like her, like the fellow filly had. Her thoughts switched when she remembered it was impolite to not give her name, she ruffled her baby soft wings and half-turned to face the other foal rather than remain looking at the sea. "I'm Verro, what's your name?"

The little sand princess was pleased to find that her newfound companion was the friendly sort; it would have put quite the damper on her day if the other filly had been rude and bratty. "Hi!" the other filly trilled cheerfully, a smile on her tiny face. Vinati wondered idly if she had ever been that small. Of course, she must have been, at some point - but, as foals are wont to do, the girl had grown in leaps and bounds since the first days after her birth.

Her fellow child pointed a delicate wing towards the water, drawing the ghost-seer's eyes back toward the creatures out at sea. Vinati cocked her head slightly to the side, regarding them with keen interest. Suddenly, a soft crooning emanated from the general direction of the nameless marine animals, startling another gasp from the girl. "No," she admitted. "I've never seen them. I wonder if they'll stay?" she added wistfully, already imagining how she might bend and warp crystal into their shapes. If only the creatures would linger off the coast of the Throat to model for her!

"Oh!" she exclaimed sheepishly after Verro introduced herself. If Sohalia was here, the mare would no doubt lecture her on her bad manners. "I'm Vinati." She grinned. "Nice t'meet you!" Like Verro, the filly could not help but notice that they shared several distinct similarities. Additionally, she was interested to note that her new friend had spirit flames adorning her wings and hooves. It reminded her of her ave, a steed with whom she was enamored, and the association made her like her new friend all the more.

She was, as yet, too young to imagine that perhaps her father had children with someone other than Sohalia, much less the dramatic implications that that could have. In truth, perhaps it was better this way - she was meeting her kin in a completely carefree setting. Later, when she learned the details of her father's... exploits... she would already see Verro as a friend. What difference would it make then?

"Did you come to see the water?" she inquired then, excitement coloring her vocals. Would Verro share her love of all things pretty and appreciate the unique way that she viewed the world?

Talk.

The Spirits Sing Softly

Verro was a spirited little filly, and she burned as splendidly as her fires did, but like fire, she could burn those that tampered with her, or marred her delicate features with a frown. Vinati had done neither, and so the sand fae was happy to continue being childish and free towards her new friend. Part of her wished she wasn't so small, but as any foal who promised to shoot towards the sky when the growth spurt finally hit, her long limbs and down covered wings were already a little too tall and a little too long for her petite frame. Still, she cut a serene picture as she stood at the water's edge, her lilac eyes glinted like amethysts in the light.

Soft ears flicked forward when the filly was also equally as entranced as she was, at the sight of the sea creatures. "I don't know, maybe they will?" She briefly wondered if they really would, or that they'd disappear below the waves once again and she'd never see them again. "I hope they stay." She added after a moments pause, much quieter and softer from her lips.

"Vinati," she repeated the filly's name and then nodded, "nice to meet you too!" Unlike her unknown half-sister, Verro had not met her ave, but she knew she was named in his tongue, as her sister was. He had not been at her birth, much to her upset, but she had heard of him from her mother, and that the fires which danced on her wings, were like his. One day she'd run into him, she hoped with every fiber of her small being, and she often looked to the skies to try and see if she could spy a flaming stallion sweeping through the skies. Even now, her eyes broke away from the sea and her new friend to glance upwards and then back to Vinati when she saw nothing of note, a small flower of disappointment bloomed in her chest.

She hadn't been born with titles and lands of red sand and rolling dunes in mind, she hadn't been born between two lovers looking to create something that was both of them. But, she was no less a Princess of the Sands, she had fire in her heart and a mind that could achieve anything should she put her hoof to it. Nephele had mentioned siblings to her, but she had been more interested in Tasokh at that moment in time, her little sister was the Sun where she was the Moon. When she finally discovered her siblings, they would be welcomed warmly.

"I did! And I found this." Her muzzle disappeared inside one of her wings for a moment, before it reappeared gently clutching the rather large opalescent shell she had found before Vinati had appeared. Carefully, she placed it in the sands between the two of them and then turned her lilac eyes back to the other. "I want to find more of them, have you seen any like it?" Her companion was older, wasn't she? Maybe she had seen more wonderful shells that they could collect, and she could bring some home to Tasokh as well.

As the pair watched the sea creatures at play, Vinati began to think of just how she would capture their essence in a sculpture. Of course, as young as she was, she didn't yet understand the exact meaning of "essence," nor did she think of her art in such esoteric terms. Still, there was a part of her very soul that longed to create, to find the beauty in the world and translate it into a form that everyone else could understand. Her crystals were just that - a window into the way that she viewed the world. It was something that she was only just beginning to understand. It was why she had crafted her ave a flaming rose. It was why she had jumped at the chance to design something pretty for her mother.

And it was why, as the two foals stood upon the shore, she began to plan another piece.

Verro agreed that she hoped the creatures would stay, and as the girl's tiny voice faded, Vinati began to concentrate. Seemingly from thin air, a small chunk of crystal appeared on the sands, its color a clear, pretty blue. The little sand princess built from there, growing from the initial block a long, strong tail, built for propelling a creature through the water. Glancing up in time to see one of the mighty beasts leap into the air, she continued to sculpt a powerful, sleek body, complete with grooves along its underside. The belly was tinged a slightly more green color, while the fins and, as an afterthought, the tips of the tail, were a bit more clear. When she was finished, an exact replica of the whale that had leapt from the water sat before her on the sand, colored in dazzling, oceanic blues. A small clasp was present along the apex of the spine, so that if a chain or a rope was strung through it, the piece would hang just so around the neck. It was about the length of Vinati's hoof - small, but not so small that the detail would be lost.

Then, she repeated the process, noting Verro's pretty violet eyes and using them as a color palette. For all she knew, the other filly saw the world through purple-colored glasses. In any case, she wanted the whales to be similar, but not exactly the same. After all, what was the fun in that?

When she was finished, she nodded, as though to herself, and then turned her blue eyes to Verro. "Here!" she said proudly. "You can have one too! Then, even if they go away, we'll still have them here!" A cheerful, childish grin appeared on her face as she invited the other filly to take one of her prized trinkets. How they would wear the necklaces without chain or rope, she didn't know - but she supposed they could figure that part out later.

When Verro carefully extracted a beautiful seashell from beneath her wing, Vinati gasped with pleasure. "Oooohhhh," she squealed, the contours of the shell pleasing to her artistic eye, "that's so pretty!" When the girl inquired if they might find more somewhere, Vinati scrunched up her nose in thought. She had wandered all over the beaches, and she knew that there were always shells to be found - the question was where were the best shells? "Oh, I know! There are a lot of pretty shells this way. Come on!" And with that, she picked up whichever of the whales Verro hadn't wanted (or both, if she had wanted neither) in her teeth and began to lead the way to a particularly sandy stretch of beach where she had had luck shell-hunting before.

Talk.
