These moving parts inside of me -
Well, they’ve been shutting down for quite some time
Leaving only rust behind

You hadn’t done much in the way of exploring since meeting the delightful, young filly named Vastra. She’d been a beautiful distraction from the monotony of waking and sleeping throughout the long, heated days of the Dragon’s Throat, but merely a distraction nonetheless. Even without your pressing desire for constant entertainment, you would have been something of a pest to both Romul and your partially doting mother had it not been for your adventures. They seemed to give you something that you couldn’t exactly coax from the white wolf or your mother dearest. Instead, you wandered the wide, golden arc of the seashore or gallivanted through strings of endless desert knolls in search of seashells, but still, nothing had quite inspired you as much as Vastra had. In some small way, you craved her attention and her affection, and you sought to recreate that excitement elsewhere— with someone new. After all, your usual subjects had grown boring and redundant. You were a child sprung from science and wit; you needed stimulation.

When the sun finally peaked the rugged horizon in the south, you were awake and waiting to begin the day’s endeavors. For once, Romul was absent your side and you relished the lack of scornful glares and scoffing sighs (he was none too kind about playing babysitter).  However, it was a rarity that you were given as much freedom, so you decided to mount the sun and run for as long and as hard as you could until it was just you and ground upon which you stood... which in reality didn’t amount to much. In fact, after the dry heat of the sand brought you toward the lip of tall patchwork grasses and looming cacti, you paused to catch your breath. There was a stitch in your side and sweat darkened the blood-likened color of your coat, but you refused to believe you were done. Perhaps that was what led you toward the lake shore, panting and heaving, before plunging in the cool waters of the infamous lake nearby.

As you lapped and kicked about in the pastel blue shallows, you imagined what it must be like to go anywhere your heart desired. If you were anything like your father, you would travel to the north in search of the rumored snows and then maybe to the east to find the endless labyrinth. All of the mysterious places that your mother now visited sounded too good to be true and you, Gyda, wanted nothing more than to explore every one of them, but instead you were tied to the south and your childhood dreams. Instead you had to wait to grow up.
