Play the music low,
and sway to the rhythm of love;
Mommy had woke her up early that morning, no later than the first golden break of light over the brim of the world, and told her the words she’d been waiting for since she’d been told there might be a party of some sort in a land called the Aurora Basin. Accompanying the exciting news that today was the day was a new gift, as well, which was now snugly fitted about the base of her small, milky river of a tail. Green as the ferns that grew in the undergrowth of the Edge, the silk binding was held in place by more shiny, white pearls.

Everything about today’s upcoming adventure sounded amazing, from the pretty name of the place itself, to the promising allure of real songs, and real dances, not just invented ones. It was no wonder, then, that Arah and Tilney had been left laughing at the flamboyance of their child, who’d burst from the clearing as soon as she could, as if a fire had been lit beneath her.

Charging like a mad woman to where her Auntie Aelfwine had promised to meet her on this very morning, Maude stops just long enough to snatch up a few pretty, white flowers (called camellias), and a particularly elegant, mossy twig. With her adornments gingerly held in her ginger lips, she skitters to a stop, and gently lays her bundle of blooms and stems atop the smooth, gray stone that was the location she’d been told to be.

Looking up eagerly, her cheerful smile becomes a sudden frown when she realizes her Auntie wasn’t here yet. Pouting as she looks about the vacant, birdsong filled space, it isn’t long before boredom sets in, one of her cloven hooves aimlessly kicking at dried leaves. Maude, however, was not going to be lured away by her curiosity - not today, anyway. Getting her hair done was far too important!

Relieve my elegant mind,
Had the doe been late? Or had the child just been extremely early?

Aelfwine had taken her time gathering her items for what the day awaited. She had told her little niece to meet her so she could beautify the filly before the big festival in the north. Of course, the dappled mare was excited for it. She wanted to be able to spend the time with her family that she had so dearly missed – but of course she would spend any time she could get with her niece as well. Maude was a beautiful product of the beauty that lay within their family (Aelfwine would always press on and say the tiny filly got her good looks from her mother, and of course herself, for there was no way Tilney could produce something as beautiful as she). It was all fun and games, however. She was happy, if not a bit saddened by the fact that she had missed out on so much.

So when she told the child she would beautify her, she knew it would be a wonderful step in the right direction. She gathered a few little sturdy sticks, to get the little knots and tangles out, and a few little flowers here and there (things along the lines of baby breath) before skipping along on her little cloven hooves to the destination. And when she arrived, the little pale princess had already arrived. A grin spread across Aelfwine’s pink snipped lips as she danced over to her niece, reaching her broad grey neck over the shoulders of the little filly, aiming to press the child into her chest as a hug of hello. “I hope you haven’t waited too long?” She asked, quietly muffled by the sticks and the plants that she held gingerly in her lips.

She moved slightly away from the filly, tiptoeing closer to the grey stone to place the items on top of what Maude had already brought. “The flowers you brought are stunning, my dear. Simply wonderful.” She added in, beaming to the child. “I brought a few things too!” She nudged with a slight wink to the pile of things she had brought herself, sitting atop the smooth grey stone. “What do you think? Are you ready?” Excitement laced her words, emerald orbs seeking out her younger relative, waiting in anticipation.

"Talk."

"Auntie!" is a breathless exclamation accompanying with the thrumming of tiny hooves against the forest floor in an ecstatic prance, a staccato song that bursts to life no sooner than the dappled mare was free of the surrounding forest. A giggling rocket, she literally thuds into Aelfwine’s chest wildly, her own tiny head thrown up around the mare’s smooth, warm shoulder.

"Not long, no," she smiles as they part, happily following her Auntie to the stone where her white flowers and twig waited with a high kneed prance, and a bobbing, lifted tail. Admiring the new blooms and accoutrements that Aelfwine had brought along, Maude lowers her muzzle and stares with amused disbelief at the daintiness of the tiny white petals of the baby’s breath. Looking back up at her father’s sister with a beaming smile, her citrine gaze sparkles with pleasure at the compliment given her rose-like flowers.

"Your flowers is very beau’ful too," politely (and earnestly) remarks the ginger kissed cherub, but the poise she’d managed in that moment is quickly scattered when the mention of actually starting today’s wonderful adventure casually passes from her Aunt’s lips.

Aimlessly dancing beneath her, her legs somehow manage to carry her about in a more suitable position for Aelfwine to work with the two inch tousle that was Maude’s mane. That it was already so long so early in her life was a good sign she was Arah’s daughter, who, as far as Maude was concerned, was the prettiest woman in all the world; that her hair was already promising to be a long, moonlit river like her dam’s made her feel as if she, too, were already as elegantly beautiful as the regal doe, especially right now.

Her childish neck arches in the most lady-like way she can manage, an equally childish smile bursting across her face, despite her attempts to be mysterious as Arah could seem sometimes.

"Yes!" blurts Maude, adding as a lately recalled nicety (as she had surely been taught), "Please!"

Relieve my elegant mind,
Auntie!’ What a beautiful sound that was. Charismatic and charming coming from her niece as it instantly grew a giant smile upon the dappled doe’s lips. Maude crashed into her and Aelfwine did all she could to stifle the small giggle that lodged itself into her throat before she nuzzled the ivory princess, her embrace ever so earnest. Her ears tipped toward the filly as she said she hadn’t waited long and a small amount of relief swelled through Aelfwine. The smile the child gave her was brilliantly addicting, a mesh and mirror of the two that had created her.

Good.” She remarked, quietly, thankful that she hadn’t waited long for her aunt to show her monochromatic face. She pulled back away from her niece, surveying her with brilliant emerald jewels as the filly danced in place, mere seconds before the turned and made it into an easier spot for Aelfwine to work. The dappled woman turned away from the filly slightly toward the giant slick stone that held all their items before picking up the little sticks she had brought in the form of a little comb. She gripped them gently in her lips, turning her body back toward Maude, lowering her head over the tiny filly’s neck as she blurted a “yes” and “please”. Aelfwine chuckled slightly, lowering her head to pull the little twigs through her tiny mane. It wasn’t very knotted, she was sure that Arah had taught the child the importance of a beautiful brilliant appearance.

It didn’t take very long to brush out the little bit of mane that the child had. When she finished, she turned her attention to the beautiful ivory flowers the child had brought. And for a moment, she sat back and looked upon the child’s neck, wondering where the best location for the flowers might be. “You’re going to look simply marvelous, Maudie.” She admitted with a beaming smile, reaching over and picking up one of the white flowers by the small stem in her lips, placing it along the center of her neck and along her spine. She did her best using her lips to move the stem in a way that would keep it in place. At this point, she imagined the flowers to look like little white braids, intertwined with the baby’s breath she had brought. But it would definitely take some work to get it to situate correctly. It was a good thing Aelfwine had nothing else planned for the rest of the day aside from spending it with her family.

A few tries later, and she had managed to get all the camellias in her mane, intertwined just enough to keep them from falling out, but loose enough to make sure the child could still turn her head. She sat back, surveyed her work with just having the camellias in without the baby’s breath, and the smile along her lips seemed to glow. “We’re almost done, sweetheart.” She beamed to Maude, shifting her weight on cloven hooves to grab a tiny piece of the flora that she had brought.

The sensation of her Auntie’s tousling lips was surprisingly pleasant, and the girl unleashes a dreamy sigh. Occasionally, the make shift comb snags, but, as Aelfwine had assumed, Arah had already taught young Maude the importance of being pretty. While the filly certainly hadn’t figured out how to comb her own mane, her mother was happy to keep her growing tufts tangle-free and luxurious as cotton fluff could be. The ginger darling, of course, had also practiced plenty on her mother’s voluminous, shining locks, and, while she had at first tangled them up, she was now capable of untangling at least the very ends of Arah’s extensive hair. It got more and more difficult to brush the higher up such a grand tail one went, the girl had discovered while practicing, the ends of such long hair almost effortlessly twisting themselves together no sooner than you brushed the knots out.

So, in that matter, Maude was glad she was still little, and her mane had not yet grown in. At the same time, however, she also wished it was, because she would be that much more likely to impress whatever Princes or young Lords awaited her at the Basin. Surely, her mother’s beauty had been a pivotal reason why her father had fallen in love, right? Sure, Arah was also gentle, tactful, and smart, but she was definitely the prettiest doe in the World’s Edge, and probably the rest of the world beyond it, and that had to count for something.

A giggle slips from her lips as her Auntie proclaims that she’ll be simply marvelous: a grand collection of words to describe a Maude! She was certainly not elegant or beautiful like a true lady yet, but she was sure that she’d be a sparkling gem among the other fillies. Soon, she's humming softly while her aunt works, her mind wandering into imagined scenarios sure to play out in the mountains this evening. On gracefully dancing legs, she twirls and prances, the eyes of dozens watching her with sparkling awe, as the heavens begin to swirl and dance with vibrant, sparkly rainbows (as she imagined the Auroras to look from the descriptions she had been given).

"Okay," somewhat drolly remarks the gradually-becoming-bored filly, when she's told her hair is almost finished, her daydreams having dwindled into less common and elaborate glimpses as the time passed; it's followed, however, by a much more brightly worded inquiry, "I'll do yours next?"

Growing more anxious for it to be over with the more the excitement about having her hair done in the first place wears away, Maude takes to occasionally glancing over at the pile of flowers. It's the only motion she lets her boredom get away with, however, pressing her mind to invent unique ways she could use the remaining flowers and trinkets in her Auntie's hair.
