The young femme followed her father, her brother Amenhotep trailing behind her protectively. She staggered and nearly fell, letting out a startled squeal. "How much farther, daddy?" She stopped moving, shaking badly. She was tired and felt like crying because her legs hurt from walking all over the place, and she was just a year old and didn't know how to fly or anything yet! Amenhotep was looking at her with concern mixed with amusement; he, too, was tired, but he was bigger and had more strength then his sister. Nefertari looked up at Leander with big blue eyes, trembling, pained, refusing to cry though her legs screamed in agony. She also refused to complain. She found silence was better in the face of muscle cramps like the ones she was experiencing; it would only slow them down and she wanted to get to her father's home as quickly as possible. Funny how quickly she'd adopted the stallion as her father-- even calling him that automatically. Amenhotep had known their father, being a year older than her, and so still referred to Leander by his name. He didn't really like the fact that his baby sister called him dad, daddy, father, etc, but he knew that she had no memory of their sire and so naturally she accepted Leander as hers. She didn't care that he hadn't actually sired her-- she loved him just as she would have if he had indeed been her blood father.

The soldier had gotten himself into a whole different mess this time. Fighting had been his pastime, but nobility and righteousness had always been his nature. Suddenly, he had found himself accepting the position of father for both a filly and colt of his own kind. He didn't have the heart to say no to the child, and knew he may never have any of his own. As much as he longed for Faelene's touch, her loyalties still lay more with her defeated King than with him. The knowledge was a constant thorn in his side. There was still the hope that she would care enough for him to leave Mauja's side, one day. But the hope was fading, the more he realized his own loyalty to Kri and the Throat, the more he understood.

A high-pitched sound came from the little white dove. Leander stopped abruptly, then moved his thick frame back to check on the yearling. He had underestimated how hard the journey would be for young Nefertari, though Amenhotep seemed to be faring well enough. He felt more distant from the older colt, and could only hope that in time it would not be so. "We're just over the border now, Nefertari. It's only a little ways before we reach the lake. If you look out there in the distance, you can almost see it." He spoke with reassuring words, smiling down at the blue eyes below. Fondness had come quickly for the girl, naturally, it seemed. There didn't have to be common blood between them for a family to be formed. He wished there were some way he could give them a mother, but for now it was not possible. The tawny stallion shifted so that he was parallel to the little one, lending his stocky side for her to lean on. He didn't want to risk her falling and twisting a leg on the snowy terrain. "Are you alright back there, Amenhotep?"

Nefertari leaned against her father, exhausted. "I'm fine."
Amenhotep nickered quietly, speeding up to trot next to his 'father' and baby sister. Nefertari's eyes were half closed, and she was stumbling along next to Leander. He was worried for her, as any good big brother would be, and he was scared that if she fell, she would not be able to get back up. He went to her other side as more support, noting with some satisfaction that he was almost as big as his new father. Nefertari's wings rustled, as if she wanted to use them. He'd seen the agony in her eyes when she'd stretched them, but had been unable to use them. It was torture for a Pegasi; to not know how to use one's wings to escape the ground for a while.

A soft nicker met his question to the colt. White lined orbs flicked back to catch Amenhotep moving up to meet his sister's side. The little filly was obviously growing tired, and it seemed her brother was just as concerned about her well being as he was. Fortunately, the three were quickly approaching the interior of the Throat; to their front lay the lake, it's water's frozen in Frostfall's grip. Relieved, the sandy brute slowed to gentle walk, one dark wing still cupped over the petite ivory child.

"Here we are. You can get a drink here, if you're thirsty. Then I think we'd better get you some rest, Nefertari." He spoke, smiling down at his new and weary daughter. He stepped forward to the water's edge, then lifted one heavy forelimb to break the ice over the surface, clearing away the hardened layer so the children could drink. The water was frigid, but his winter coat had grown in thickly, and with the added warmth of downy wings, the stallion stayed quite comfortable in the harsh season. It was the foals he was concerned for, but they were strong for their age, it seemed. After surviving the loss of their birth parents, Leander suspected that the children would not feel Frostfall to be such a feat.

The brittle palm trees around the lake's perimeter were snow laden and would proved decent shelter from the wind. With a purposeful look, he made his way over to a group of fairly large palms, and began to push the snow with his umber muzzle. At first, it just looked as though he was only rooting around for grasses, but soon the purpose was apparent. He was creating a bed for the foals to sleep in, moving most of the snow into a buffer from the low temperature. The remnants of thick summer plants laid flattened at the bottom of the circular bed, hopefully providing some insulation for the little ones' bodies. Honey eyes glanced back at Nefertari and Amenhotep every so often, dilligence within their depths. He was responsible for them now, and losing them at this time of year could be fatal.

The little filly stumbled to the lake, and her brother stood beside her, waiting until she was done drinking before he dipped his head to the water. Nefertari headed back over to Leander, exhausted and trembling. The normally high temperature of the filly had lowered a considerable amount. Amenhotep looked at Leander, worried. Would she be okay? The question was a heavy one, constantly on his mind. She laid down in the circle made by her father, shivering badly, and Amenhotep took it upon himself to speak. "No matter the fact my body heat is high as hers was before we started off, I'm not big enough to warm her up. It's going to take both of us." His tone was soft, his eyes were fixed on his sister as he laid down next to her, behind her, technically.

The gilded stag glanced back, watching the foals quench their thirst in the icy lake. The Gods had dealt them a treacherous Frostfall this year, and it seemed as though it's cold grasp had held the land for far too long already. Even in the Throat, were the sun usually beat down against the sands, the snow coated everything, and the wind howled through the palms. Grimly, Leander looked up towards the clouded sky, wondering when Birdsong would return.

Light hoof-steps brought his gaze back the the small nest he'd made. Little Nefertari laid down in the spot, a wordless, shivering, ivory form. The emerald eyes of her brother gleamed up at him, and the warrior did not miss the look of concern on the boy's face. Soon the colt spoke, his words decisive and strong. The palomino nodded in agreement before responding. "Don't worry, Amenhotep. Between the both of us, we will be able to keep Nefertari nice and warm." Reassuring tones left his maw as he laid down, pressing his body against the filly's exposed side. One massive ochre wing laid gently over the girl's body, becoming a blanket of thick feathers for the little pegasus.

Nefertari snuggled into her father's side, shivering as she closed her eyes and yawned sleepily. "What if the leader comes here, daddy?" She whinnied, sleepy and half-awake. She wondered if Leander's leader was nice, if she would like her and her brother. Probably; her father wouldn't be in a herd with a cruel leader. He was a better stallion than that. Quite out of nowhere, an image of Leander as a colt suddenly appeared. Long, gangly legs, big wings... She giggled and pressed herself further into her father, smiling softly She heard her brother's soft, joking nicker of, 'She's delusional!'. His voice was full of affection, and Neffy felt safe and warm with her family around her. She giggled again, this time at Ame's words, and tried to say, 'Am not!' but it came out as a mumbled sound of protest. Darkness came slowly, creeping over the little filly. Her breathing flattened out, evened, and she was asleep, dreaming of her mother, Leander, her mysterious sire, and her brother.

In the distance a strange figure is spotted. It is all pale, though it gleams in what light there is with a diamond effect. It is still as stone, and yet it seems to have a heavy gaze that settles uncomfortably upon the present.

Two, black eyes rest in its carved head, that of a thick horse, upon better inspection. The body is thick and bulky, and though there seems to be little muscle definition, the size suggests strength.

Noiselessly the pale horse stares on, a certain malice to its presence on the horizon.

Will you approach closer?

The little white filly would not find sleep instantly, like most foals, and soon posed him a question. Leander smiled down at her thoughtfully, wondering how to answer and describe Kri to the young ones. After a few moments of musing, he began. "If Kri comes here, she will welcome you two into the herd officially. She is a good, strong leader, but she is not quite as talkative you and I. I think you will like her, and remember to not be afraid even if she may seem a little gruff sometimes. She has taken good care of the herd for a long time." The golden stallion gave what answer he could to his two charges, though he was sure Kri would be pleased to see such young life filling the Throat, even if it split his energy between his warrior duties and their care. A mother would be necessary for the foals, and if he could find the right mare within the herd, he would ask her to give them her care and love, even if he could not love anyone as he did Faelene. Maybe in time his desire for the ebon Unicorn would fade, but for now it burned heavy within his chest.

Amidst the playful bicker of the little pegasi, Leander almost missed the foreign form in the distance. Keen gold eyes noticed that it was a luminescent masculine body, and no small male at that. The stranger was none that he'd noticed in the Throat before in all his patrols, and worry immediately washed over him. It was a trespasser of their borders, not a newcomer with a wish of acceptance. For if the pale horse wanted a home, wouldn't he have approached them and asked? Instead, the stallion just stood still and stared out ominously. If he came any closer, the children may well be in danger.

With a stern expression, Leander turned his head to face Amenhotep. "Stay here, and keep your sister safe. I do not think that stallion is part of the herd, and he may not mean us well. If anything happens to me, run and find Kri or others of the herd. They will take care of you." His tone was authoritative, though he knew the smart colt would understand that his sister's safety would rest with him for now. With a reassuring nod to the boy, the massive tawny brute rose from his position on the ground, careful not to disturb Nefertari, and began a brisk trot towards the figure. It did not take too long to get close, and feathered limbs soon slowed into a walk. The foreign stallion's eyes were void black, like Svetlana's, but the color did not give off such a dangerous feel on the mare. Standing to the front of the light male, Leander halted. Mahogany wings had spread on his way over, lending even more breadth to his own appearance. "Greetings. You have reached the Dragon's Throat herd, sir. May I ask what you seek here?" His voice rang with polite question, the usual manners apparent but his profile laced with quiet vigilance. If the stranger did want to cause any problems here, he would have to get past him first.

The young colt looked up and spotted the figure in the distance. Worry clouded his features, and he looked at Leander, who was getting up and telling him to keep an eye on his sister. "I will." Amenhotep said firmly, looking with worry after his father. She might not leave, though... he thought, sighing unhappily. Nefertari, sensing the absence of her father, woke with a start and looked around. Spotting the threat, she started to get up, but her brother's wing restrained her. She looked at him pleadingly. He simply shook his head, and she started to cry silently. She didn't want her father hurt. Her head whipped around to watch Leander's every move as hot tears leaked from her eyes.

The kinda words of the optimistic pegasus fall on deaf ears. The being which Leander hopes to speak with is not an ordinary horse, but one crafted of snow and ice, winter and frost.

It's body glistens in the available sun like dazzling diamonds and its eyes, sets of coal that stare unblinking back at the buckskin boy. Surely it is a relief to find not an intruder upon the land, but a simple snowhorse standing in the heart of the season. It's very probable that creative foals or magical artists crafted this being. Perhaps he is a product of boredom, passion for the frostfall or an aid to loneliness.

Whatever his origins, he remains, beautiful and unshakably ominous.

As the moments pass, perhaps during which you grow relieved and relaxed, the snowhorse grins.

It is a nearly unnoticed motion; the gentle twist of that ice maw. Yet you cannot shake the sensation that it had happened, that this thing had moved.

If he was a fool, at least he was the overly vigilant sort. The creature he'd suspected of being an intruder soon revealed to be nothing but the very snow of Frostfall itself, shaped into the form of a horse. Leander wondered who would have made such a thing out here. It looked so realistic from a distance. Didn't it's creator realize that it may cause some worry for the herd?

With a sigh, gold eyes rolled, merely happy that the thing was not something he'd have to fight off, especially with little Nefertari and Amenhotep close by. So far, he had not heard any hoof-beats following him, so the two must have abided by his words. Just as he was about to turn and let the children know his folly, movement caught his eye. The snow beast seemed to grin, for just the flash of a moment, at him. The palomino's body became rigid and tensed, ears perked and alert, just waiting for the ice stallion to move again. Relief left him, replaced once again with a steady thrum of adrenaline. He wasn't just seeing things, was he? He was never prone to hallucinations. Maybe this thing was a product of some magic, some illusion which had been cast. Without even turning his head from the strange white form, Leander spoke. "Stay there, children. Everything is alright. I will be back with you soon." He half-yelled back to the foals, aiming to raise his voice over the cold wind. He needed to ensure that the little ones would keep their distance, for in this land, magic was everywhere. And it was not often used for good. It was all too easy to remember the ice spikes that had sprouted from the ground at the start of the Edge battle, aiming to rip into the bellies of his friends. Hopefully, this thing did not mean such malice.

"What are you?" Quiet words left his maw, not expecting an answer from the crafted stallion before him. It did not move any longer, yet he needed to make sure the thing really was just an object, incapable of doing any harm here. Finally, feathered hooves stepped closer to the ivory sculpture, and he let his tawny neck stretch out to sniff it's snowy muzzle. The muscles in his neck grew taught as it arched in a way that looked as though he was ready to spring into movement. There was apprehension in the gesture, as if he really expected the craft to jump to life and grab him. Maybe he really was starting to become delusional in this cold, harsh season.

The snow horse remained stock still as Leander seemed to weigh his options and his sanity. As the golden neck twisted and a strong voice called out the foals the ice twitched just a smidge. Too soon Leander's attention was turned back around. The wind whistled by and eddies of snow picked up at their feet as the pegasus scrutinized the snow statue.

All was calm. Eerily calm.
In those breaths that it took for Leander to lean in, whiskers just brushing the maw of the frozen horse, everything changed.

A soundless echo seemed to emanate from the snow beast as its mouth gaped and body coiled, lunging abruptly after Leander as he withdrew from their brief embrace. The head of snow seemed to be composed more of frozen stone as it aimed to collide with Leander's right eye and cheek, likely to sheer away the top layer of hide with its rough ice bits and deliver a deep bruise and welt with its weight and solidity.

For all of its strength, unseeming as that may be, the snow horse was slow. Its hooves trudged through the winter landscape as it attempted to whirl its body to slam against Leander's right side following its initial charge.

Chaos. Insanity. That was what ensued. It was not a delusion or a dream, but a creature made of snow truly lunging for his living face. His tensed muscles aided in the quick reflex of whipping his skull away from the ice beast's maw, but it was still not quite quick enough. Sharp edges of cold cut his face, leaving a bloody, bruised section just below his right eye. A grunt of pain left his throat as he parried to the left and away from the suddenly animated attacker's slow charge.

Adrenaline coursed through his veins, and though there was little time to think, the children were foremost on his mind. Everything told him to fly, to give himself leverage in the air. But if he lept into the sky now, the foals would be more vulnerable to the snow stallion's wrath. Nefertari's voice calling him father rang in his mind. There was no way he was giving this thing a chance to get near his foals. The golden careened just a bit farther from the mongrel before turning back to face it. Hooves dug into the earth as he thrust himself towards the pale form. The terrain was not as easy to fight on at this time of year, and Leander was not much quicker than his opponent. He made use of the large mahogany wings on his back, pumping them hard into the air to propel him forward into his aimed blow with even more force. If this thing really was made entirely of snow and ice, then hitting it hard enough might shatter it completely. All he could hope was that there was no bone beneath that ivory shell as he barreled forward towards the winter creature's left side, ready to ram his shoulder and chest into it with all he had.

[!!! did not see you had replied + holiday, so sorry for delay :x]

Hungry eyes watched the feathered thing bleed with a deep satisfaction. If ice and snow could laugh then it was surely what the snow horse did. As it was only silence shook from its sides.

The bird took flight, much to the monster's disappointment. It had no real need for the battle, no true thirst or feeling except an endless rage that seemed to burn impossibly within the core of the cold thing. Whatever intelligence it had was limited and complicated, for it knew enough to suspect that brave Leander would not turn coward. Not with children below to protect and a warrior's attitude in his eyes.

The snow horse had been right in that.

In a flurry of feathers and snow Leander spun around and charged. The icy thing twisted its lips in a cruel smile of sorts as it reared up, fore hooves hoping to strike out at the golden horse as it swooped down into the snow beast.

There was a lovely rainbow for a brief second as crystalline snowflakes soared through the winter air, catching the mild sunshine in a breathtaking display. Death was always like that though; beautiful.

The snow demon had done as Leander suspected, imploded upon impact into a dozen tiny particles no different from the ground now. In the core of the thing was no hard bone or anything rigid, just a burning ball of blue flame.

The orb leapt from the cavity of the thing's remains, whirling with a sound like a winter storm as it chased after Leander. It would spin around the pegasus' full body once, before looping around to Leander's head. It paused for a brief moment, appearing almost playful, though perhaps Leander would know better seeing as it seemed to be the heart and soul of that loathsome thing. It wouldn't matter though, the flaming orb did not need Leander to think of it any certain way, because it would have him regardless.

The orb would make one last sound before sinking into Leander's skull and dispersing into his body.

Congratulations Leander, you have been possessed by an ice demon!
This will affect you for 3 weeks minimum, but you may let the effects play out longer if you desire.

Symptoms:
- You find only nourishment in ice and snow, grass has lost all its flavor and desire.
- You will feel painfully cold to the touch, always, and as such will always be exhaling visibly. Your sense of touch is numbed, so that you cannot feel touch, warmth or even pain very well, however all of the effects to your body are still normal from these.
- Your wings will be frosted on the tips and your eyes have turned pale blue.

- You are able to hold someone in your icy stare and freeze them for 1 post (30 seconds in battle).
- You are able to encase yourself in ice, shielding yourself from 1 attack per use.
- You are able to summon snow storms with a scream.

- You are unable to breed during this period. Consider your sperm frostbitten.
- You have an immediate hatred for any fire users and will madly assault them in your fear and spite.
- You have wild, often violent mood swings, shifting at least every 4 posts.
