of the sea
The lean, maritime warrior found that she needed to slow her brisk strides as she headed back from the Threshold. Though the thorns had, indeed, torn through the woman’s soft grey skin, it hadn’t (as far as the militant mare could tell) hindered her ability to walk. While the striped, seaborne mare could not entirely hide her irritation at their plodding gait (truthfully, it was a brisk walk; but being this long away from water made her particularly irritable), her avowal to her people (and thus to acquiescing to the Earth God’s request) kept her sharp tongue sheathed from remarking on their slowed gait.

And so, in a herculean effort for small-talk, the striped warrioress asked, “Where are you from?” Her unblinking, overlarge eyes studied the silken cropped mane—its shortness at odds with the texture of the hair. Despite the welts and tears from the thorns, her coat was still sleek and the grey shone in the patches of sunlight that came through the canopy. The pink skin around her ice blue eyes was pale, unmarked my scars or sun-spots; as was the rest of her body. Even her hooves, a soft tan, were fair and flawless. The woman, whoever she was or wherever she was from, seemed unblemished by life. The contrast to herself was not lost on Aquila, her plated skin rippling slightly.

And, upon reaching the first large pool and falls, the warrior raised her ridged head and let loose a surprisingly deep, loud call for others. Legs, already growing ashen from her long stint on land, stepped into the freshwater pool. Bright aqua and rich sand leapt back to life on her skin the moment the water touched her. Her face-fins vibrated slightly as a long and relieved breath pushed out of her nostrils. “Why do you wear a crown?” Her words followed shortly after her loud whinny, unblinking eyes staring at the glittering object on the other’s brow.

She was sorta able to keep up with the other mare as they trekked to this Hidden Falls. Though the most travelling she had done had been done in a specially made carriage for the royal family where she came from. So the mare was a bit out of shape. No biggie. She would get in shape soonish. Maybe. Her thoughts turned inward, wondering how her family was coping with the purposeful disappearance of the Crown Princess. She missed her family. How good it would be to see them again. Be a princess again. The unicorn was jerked out of her thoughts by the weird looking mare's question as to where she was from. Her instinctive answer was 'none of your business.' But she figured that would be rude to her guide. "Out of this land called Helovia. A few days travel at least." She said vaguely, not wanting this stranger to know where she came from. They might know her then. She didn't need that.

The tears in her delicate hide stung, but had since clotted and stopped bleeding during their travel to the Hidden Falls. It was true, she had never worked a day of her life in the sun. She had been pampered horn and hoof in the palace where she had been born, and not known much else until she had arrived here in Helovia. Soon, however, they reached a pool of water and a waterfall. The princess allowed herself to step delicately, gently and cautiously into the water as the mare called for another to come. The next question the strange mare threw at her startled her. The strange mare creature had asked why she wore a crown. "Not a crown. Just jewelry from home." While it wasn't exactly a lie, it wasn't the full truth either. But she didn't know this mare. For all she knew, the mare could be a bounty hunter set to fetch her.

Ultima landed in a flush of autumn leaves, her long hair – braided for tidiness – snapping as her hooves met the earth. Her gaze found the Conscript immediately. “Sorry,” she called breathlessly, fanning the leaves and the dust down, “But have either of you seen a kitten anywhere about? He’s this tall—” She lifted a fore hoof yea-high. “—And looks rather like a walking cottonball, but don’t tell him I said that. Anyway, he’s gone missing and he’s really quite small, so— Oh, is that … ?

The girl had spoken largely to Aquila, not because they knew each other particularly well, but because the seahorse was 1. noticeable and 2. familiar. An excellent combination if one is seeking help. Deep in tunnel-vision, however, Ultima had entirely glossed over the figure following just behind. By force of habit, she hurried forward, thinking it might be Tilney – and came succinctly to a halt, ears perked and expression difficult to place. Expectation, tempered quickly by disappointment and an undercurrent of relief.

Not him. Of course not. (He hadn’t even said goodbye.)

It was a stranger, a tall gray mare with a fine set of antlers and a polished look that Ultima knew quite well. She had been the same, a year ago – bright, shiny. The thought drew a smile.

So steeling her heart, softening her stance, and salvaging her manners, Ultima gave the newcomer a polite bob. “Pardon, I don’t believe we’ve met,” she said, cocking her head. “Welcome to the Falls! Are you hurt anywhere? I see a fair number of scratches on your poor legs – nothing too serious, I imagine, but I can certainly look them over. I’m sure they sting.” Her brilliant gold eyes turned to Aquila. “And you? Are you alright? I’m a Medic,” she added for the gray’s reference. “Please call me Ultima.”

of the sea
Scaled, striped ears swiveled and pinned towards the soft heather woman at her vague, elusive response to the sea mare’s simple question. While the warrioress hadn’t truly been interested in the answer when she asked it, now her training caused a pique in her curiosity. Purposefully vague answers were equal parts suspicious and particular. Where Aquila was one to quickly tell others of Akvo (for how else would she find anyone else with information about it, if she did not speak of it?), this mare hid her home.

But the woman was answering her second question: ”not a crown”? The seahorse’s tail rattled once as it whipped about her hocks at the second, vague, and borderline untruthful answer. Though it may be true, for the Akvian imperiestroj and imperiestrinoj had retired their kronoj for the reĝarmaĵo, that her crown was just ‘jewelry,’ her ambiguous answers hid more than they revealed.

So it was with a stark and unblinking stare that the striped warrior stared at this heather-dipped, genteel woman. A soft smack of her face-fins against her neck was the only outward sign of her annoyance at the dubious answers. But she was not left long to fix her unnerving stare on the woman, as another came—the sea painted woman of four wings from the meeting. Her ridged head swung towards Ultima, not truly knowing the woman but at least knowing of her. Vibrant turquoise irises stare at the many wings for long, unblinking moments. She was slowly loosing her innate fear of those with wings. But it was hard to undo years of training and genetic instinct.

And, after a few silent moments, the warrior’s throaty voice sounded, “She—” her bladed horn and sharp eyes swung towards the grey woman, realizing in that moment that she did not know her name, “What are you called?” Pausing after her question for an answer, she then continued, “I brought her from the Threshold for healing and a home. I have not seen a kitten.” Her non-sequitur statements were send simply and without inflection. She was simply imparting information.

Then, in a massive display of trust, the warrior dipped her head beneath the surface of the water, face fins splashing liquid back on her neck towards her dried out gill slits, before raising and allowing the cool water to run over her ridged neck. Never once did she blink, though.
