There were times in life when one felt shallow and alone. A total failure at all things. Men usually weren’t the type to easily fall prey to depression, but the constant shadowing of grey was preventing his heart from rising. He longed for the warmth of the sun, to feel its soft rays blazing a trail of foamy sweat along his back when training commenced. Instead of dry desert heat, the Throat got bitter freezing temperatures and frequent sleet storms.

Pitless gold stared out at the expansion of land with a vacant look of disapproval, the shade of a frostbitten palm cast sharp shadows across his body, it’s bending limbs offered protection against a fresh onslaught of wind and frozen rain. It was sleeting again, a cold shin of solid ice fell from an unforgiving dark sky.

Their land lacked its familiar luster; it seemed nearly dead and empty of all life. Save for those that took refuge in the Oasis. The elements were against them, in the summer they burnt up, and in winter everything froze. He didn’t leave the throat on days like this, choosing to stay near Cera and forage for food.

The piercing cry of a hawk echoed across the thick sands of the Dragon's Throat, and he hurriedly hid away from the sleet in the boughs of the great tree. She curled up tightly, cold and holding a startlingly beautiful amulet with a bright emerald crystal in the center. Keen, yellow eyes gazed out at the equid beneath, and she let out a muffled trill, sidestepping along the branch to better see him. He was dark, light and gold, and something sparked in her memory. Was he the one deserving of this? The Gods wanted to bestow this gift upon a special creature, but she had to be sure.

With a bounce, she hopped from the branch onto a nearby rock, hoping to get a better look at the armored stallion.

Frost and freezing temperatures had taken over Cera's home, and the little colt didn't like it one bit. His wings were tender and he moved them around often, ruffling the poor feathers that objected to the frosty treatment. Another downfall to being so tall and gangly was that Cera didn't have much bulk to keep him warm. Feeling rather infantile in his need for warmth he set out to find his dad. Perhaps their shared warmth could drive away the chill.

Every few steps was accompanied by a shiver that Cera ignored, rather pouty at the fact he couldn't find his father. When at last he was going to call for him, the flat desert shriveled away to show a familiar dark splotched frame in the distance. With a feeble but happy cry to announce himself, and with a new spring to his step, Cera set off to meet him. The frosty air was bad on the lungs, and he was coughing a little before warmth returned and his throat stopped throbbing. Prancing up to Midas with a cheerful smile, unable to be taken away even with the awful weather. "I found you daddy!" Bittern wings flapping joyously, as if he had achieved much in this little accomplishment. Muzzle pressing to darkened cheek, smelling the familiar traces and scents that always lingered upon his father's coat.

Predator birds were common in his home. Though lately, like everything else around them, the carnivorous avians had fled from the rain and sleet to a warmer location, perhaps closer to the sea. Each surely praying for a southern wind to carry their winged bodies safely for the remainder of winter; but, until spring their wishes would remain in vain. A shrill cry alerted him from inner thoughts, snapping direction to one such avian, a clay tinted hawk.

Gazing at the shivering bird that peered at him so readily he whispered, “This cold ails you sister, why linger so close to its edge?” blinking frost from his eyes Midas stared harder and noticed a flash of emerald slithering beneath a thin covering of feathers. Just as he was about to lean in a little closer for a better look the familiar hoof steps of his son rang through the air. As did a responding throaty cough, velvet flicked back and a
flash of instant concern flickered behind the deepness of his honeyed gaze.

”Cera?” he uttered, "I found you daddy!" bouncy steps landed near him, a smile already lacing an innocent maw. Lengthened face turned to greet his little son, warm breath trailing over the overly chilled form in concern. Cera had so little bulk to him; the wind gave impression of blasting right through flesh and feather alike. Winged appendage closest extended at a rise, up and over the shivered body of his youth until capturing it within a warm embrace. Within the shield of warm feathers he held the child against his body, seeking to offer warmth.

The kindness in the stallion's voice, though she did not understand the words, solidified her knowledge. This horse had to be the right one. Carefully, the hawk jumped onto the painted stallion's back, her talons resting on armor. She dipped her head down, and a gold magic began to glow. The amulet she held in her beak wrapped itself around his neck and latched there.

Almost as mysteriously as she came, the bird flew away. A voice echoed in the dragon's tree. "You have pleased the gods, Midas...."
