Kaj had finally heard of Gaucho's passing. He had mourned over a friend that could have been in private, though...most of his life was spent in private anyways, these days. His ties to the Falls had dissolved like sugar floss in water, until he woke up one morning in a foreign area of the wilds, and he realized he had not been home in seasons. And instead of hurting, he had felt free. Unburdened by the idea of allegiance, loyalty, history...he had breathed deep into his lungs and tentatively smiled. It had been easier, he noticed. Less like he was faking it. Arabella had crooned and trilled her joy before taking wing on her beautiful blue feathers to go hunting. She was no companion for battle, not yet, and Kaj would never pressure her into such an existence. For now he simply contented himself with exploring borders yet unseen, bonding with her, understanding her in ways Kaj hadn't known you could understand another being. The connection she had to his soul was undeniable, and he finally understood

He didn't know what drew him to the Grove that early morning, watching Arabella fly off into the dawn streaked sky to find her food. He had simply been moving throughout the lands, existing off what foliage he could find, happier than he'd ever been even as he found himself without a herdland during one of the most difficult seasons of the cycle. This Frostfall was particularly violent as well, and more often than not Kaj and Arabella had to call themselves down from the skies to hunker together in a cloister of trees, taking shelter until the blizzards relented and the world was coated anew in untouched mounds of snow once more.

Kaj didn't mind. He had forgotten his days of travel, having never been much of a nomad. He had been tied to the Edge from his first day in the Threshold, and then had moved immediately to the Falls. Even before Helovia there had been his native lands. An environment much like the one around him currently - dismally cold, barren, white as far as the eye could see. But he had not forgotten that this was how he and Maren had first met, and he had asked her to meet him here in the span of the next few days, and he had been preparing to meet her away from the dunes of the Throat. Away from the stained-black grief of Gaucho's death. So that maybe she could clear her head and smile again. Maybe he could make her smile.

Kaj had cleared a little circle of grass from beneath the snow, and stood waiting, excited to show Maren all he had accomplished - the morning sun hitting the frosted lake, a small cheery fire that he'd managed to create after hours of mistakes with his magic, and the winter wonderland all around them. Just like when they'd first met in the Falls. Maybe she would remember? Kaj lifted his blue eyes to the skyline, Arabella's returning figure unmistakable, and he tried a tentative smile.

What could go wrong?
