Gawen is brave, okay, and he won't let anybody tell him any different.

Which is how he found himself skittering nervously away from the Edge borders, constantly looking back frantically like his mother would come burning out of the trees like a demon from hell to scream at him and drag him back kicking and screaming into the herdland. Gawen quickened his pace just imagining it, the visual sending shudders down his spine.

He almost turned around, the looming shadows on the untouched snow past the boundaries far more intimidating than his mother's anger. But he was tired of exploring the Edge, and he wanted to be brave. He wanted to go find special herbs to bring back for Maude and Tilney, and prove that he could be a good Moon Doctor. And the closest wild land was the Grove, with its abundance of foliage hiding beneath the snow and the still, frozen waters.

As soon as he was sure he wouldn't be followed, the awkward, loose-limbed foal went flailing and skipping through the thick snow. Winter was Gawen's absolute favorite season. He wasn't as cold as the others with his thick feathers, and when he fell, there was this amazing white substance that broke his fall! Snow was Gawen's best friend, and he was astounded by the scarcity of his bruises as the snowfall increased through the season. It was honestly the best teacher Gawen had ever had - the thickness of the snow keeping his legs straight and his body generally upright. Astonishing, really.

Except ice. Gawen hated ice.

His hoof hit a patch of it on the way down to the lake and he slid sharply, careening down into the snow with a sharp noise of surprise. As the snow settled he was staring up at the sky, a veritable snow angel with how his wings were splayed at full length beside him. Frowning heavily, Gawen rolled over onto one side and sighed, kicking his hooves beneath him reluctantly. Muttering to himself as he used his horn and hooves to scrape away the snow, hunting for the perfect herb to take back to Tilney and Maude.

Sunjata

The blue jay had been here before. This was the place he confided in his sister of his plans to bring destruction upon the Elephant General and all those that sided with him. This was the place where he had also apologized to the woman, her frustration and anger at him not hard to miss. This was also the place that he returned to, hoping perhaps to see his sister once again, to revel in her beautiful feathers and scent of the desert and home. Something familiar among the world of strange.

His heavy navy hooves stepped across the snow, his wings laid low as they drug across the snow – creating tiny little trenches wherever he walked. He was exhausted, and kept his head low toward the ground of snow. Sunjata wasn’t used to this type of weather – it was something that was of a rare occurrence back where he was from. And he found it difficult to migrate and move with snow building up on his feathers as well as his body – freezing to the bits and pieces of his mane as it stuck up in strange places. This weather was stupid and he was already so over it.

But, something in the distance captured his attention. At first it looked like a giant pile of leaves, the way it flapped and flailed against the wind and snow. And then, it stood up, angling its horn to the snow to dig. ’What the fuck?’ Sunjata wanted to say, his azure gaze never leaving the chocolate and white hybrid. His brows furrowed slightly, aiming his attention toward the child. What was it with constantly meeting children? It was growing old and ridiculous by now. And after the unique meeting in the Throat, he was already slightly annoyed by that.

He approached the colt, his head lifting higher as he stood to his full height. His multicolored wings pulled in tightly to his sides as he surveyed the colt with a scrutinizing look. “What are you doing?” His voice sounded bored, deep and laced with a foreign touch as his shadow overwhelmed the small child in front of him. Wasn’t this just tactful? Surprising a child like this? Sunjata didn’t care, in all reality. He wanted to know what the hell all the Helovian’s did with their time. It wasn’t like it was split up as it was back home – where unicorns did their thing and pegasi did their own. No, this place was mixed, melded, and as he looked upon the hybrid child, it seemed to feel wrong all the same.

If a person could die of fright, well, Gawen was doing his absolute best. He hadn't been paying attention at all - which was stupid considering his age and the fact he was in an unknown wild land, and the fact there was fucking snow everywhere to make noise. He nearly leapt out of his skin, giant blue eyes swelling in his head and peering up at the long shadow that fell across him, not even daring to lift his head to try and inspect this newcomer yet. Not until the grumbling, discomfited voice spat out, startling the child a second time as he jerked his head up and snapped his wings in like a soldier. Trying to appear polite and mature. Maybe even sucking up a bit because good lords his knees were already shaking.

But the man had asked a question, and Gawen fought to unravel his knotted tongue to form a response. He didn't want to die because of his awkwardness okay!

"I-I-I'm looking for an herb, sir!" his voice squeaked out, pitifully high. He never had a very deep voice in the first place but he could practically pee himself with the squinting glare of the older, colorful male. The downturned lips and frustrated, pinched expression. "F-For my friend! We want to be medics and I want to i-impress her," he fumbled out quickly after that, practically spitting the mashed up words to try and please the sour stallion.

Snow slid down his horn onto his face and Gawen's face twitched hard, almost comically, at the cold sensation. He nearly went cross eyed, but he didn't dare move beneath the scrutiny of the much older male. He normally would have inquired what the male was doing out himself, if only for the sake of being polite, but Gawen truly didn't even want to know. Or tempt fate. If this was some mass murderer, he wanted to cherish his life - and his silence - for however long he had left to live. This is why you listen to Mama, Gawen, he wailed in his mind.

Sunjata

The child nearly died of fright. It took Sunjata a few seconds to refrain from the grin spreading across his lips. Instead, it twitched delicately along the corners of his frown as he stared down the boy. The stutter that spread from the child’s lips caused Sunjata’s gaze to narrow on the boy at first. “An herb, huh? You’re not gonna find much out here.” He half mumbled, pausing in his giant charade he was about to give the boy until he spoke of a friend. A girl friend.

He lowered his head slowly toward the boy, a grin spreading across his lips much like a Cheshire cat as his gaze sought out the boy’s own blue gaze. “Her? You want to find something that’ll impress the ladies?” His tone had picked up a bit of humor, entertainment from what this kid was just trying to do. Was he trying to bring home flowers for her? For god’s sake, he needed to help this child.

So, he surveyed the boy briefly before stepping back and playfully bowing to the boy, his large wings spread at his sides as he swooped down. “The name’s Sunjata. I can help you impress her if that’s what you’re looking for?” He questioned, pulling up to his full height and returning his wings to his sides, his lips forming a smug and almost comical grin as he looked upon the boy. Oh, this was going to get good. Perhaps the child was too young to learn the simple pleasantries in life, but if Jata knew one thing, it was the way hormones struck. And they often struck hard. If impressing a girl he liked was something he wanted to do, Sunjata would be more than willing to help him.

Gawen shouldn't be playing with fate, he really, really shouldn't, but the medic inside him reared its ugly, foul-mouthed head and he puffed up like a tiny angry bird and the words just went spitting right off his tongue. "That's not true! There's...there's winter savory, and snowdrops, a-and aconite!" his little voice cried, not knowing what point he was really trying to prove but needing to prove it anyways. He didn't want to feel foolish for heading all the way out of the Edge just to find something that didn't grow within the herdland to bring back for Maude. He wasn't wrong!

But whatever fate was going to befall him was stayed by the sudden blooming of an almost maniacal grin, and Gawen faltered, not sure how to respond to this kind of smile. It was almost as terrifying as the previous looming, but he didn't know why. He'd certainly never seen anyone smile in a way that wasn't positive, after all, but his instincts told him "definitely not good". It was an internal war that probably showed all too well on his expressive face.

But he couldn't just ignore the fact that the stallion was offering some sort of weird help, okay, Gawen was desperate! Even if that meant taking advice from mass murderers. He wanted to impress Maude! And Tilney too, but that seemed to have escaped the stallion's notice.

Gawen nonetheless smiled brightly and nodded his head. He wasn't sure why he'd said "ladies" in such a way, but...Gawen sure wanted to impress people so why not! And finally he had a name. Not that mass murderers couldn't have names of course, but it made them likable. Likable mass murderers were much easier to deal with, in Gawen's opinion. He could accept that.

"I'm Gawen! And yes! Can you teach me?" Hopeful, studious blue eyes stared up pleadingly, awaiting knowledge like a dried out sponge. He wouldn't even know what hit him, honestly.

Sunjata

Sunjata watched as the child puffed up like an angry cat, his feathers and fur poking out on end as he began to argue with the blue bird. Instead of growing angry like the man usually did, he simply cocked his head and waited for the child’s charade to be over with. He spouted off what sounded like nonsense to Jata, and all the man could do was let a small gruff chuckle escape his lips. “… Yeah, sure. Whatever those are. Yeah.” He admitted, refraining from simply laughing at the madness the child spoke of. Back in Korofi, nearly nothing grew wild aside from the trees that thrived despite the seasons. So he waited as the child’s demeanor completely changed.

I’m Gawen!” Sunjata began to file the information away, his laughter and smile slowly shifting to a smirk. Where to start? There were so many things. Being a prince of his house back home, he had learned formalities and how to please them in courting. However, Sunjata had been eager to learn how to please them in other ways – and it often involved channeling the inner man and instinct. He could put on a face of civility, but deep down in the heightened intensities of love making is where he found himself as a brazen warrior.

Well, Gawen. What does she like? What is she like?” He began to question, kneeling down on his navy knees to lower himself among the snow – to be closer to the child’s height. His gaze looked to him, greedy for information despite the fact it was a child. He wanted to learn how other creatures lived, what they thought and what they did. And children were always honest, right? So he folded his wings across the snow, creating a tiny amount of shelter among his legs as he listened to Gawen. “And just how do you want to impress her? Is this a first date sort of thing?” He patiently asked as well.

"Talk."

Whew. Close one.

Gawen should've known not to antagonize a potential mass murderer but the healing soul in him simply couldn't let it go. At least the towering beast had not deigned to kill the child for his slight, instead waving off the information like it didn't matter; or worse, like it was a lie. Gawen could have screamed for how insulting that was, the presumption that he would lie about something so precious and important and useful.

But Gawen also valued his internal organs, and he'd rather like them to remain in their proper places thank you very much.

Except Sunjata was quick to put him on the spot, and Gawen felt like he was suddenly in a very important exam, his mind flitting over the little he knew of Maude and Tilney in a desperate search for answers that would appease the monster. "Well...she likes herbs, and healing...and she's very nice and kind even when other people are mean. But uh...that's all I know," he admitted shyly, scuffing his hoof through the snow and averting his eyes. That was the problem you see. Tilney was this grand, amazing Doctor that could make Gawen swoon with his very presence, and that made getting to know Maude so hard. But he wanted to because she was the only filly he'd ever met his age! Who had the same interests!

Of course Gawen didn't know what 'date' meant, and didn't realize in the slightest that Sunjata had romance on the brain when Gawen was just helplessly entrenched in platonic affection and admiration for the girl. But oh well.

"I wanted to bring her pretty snowdrops, because she's pretty too, and maybe we could learn about its uses together?" It fell limply from his mouth, unsure suddenly. Was that...good enough? Was he doing this WRONG?! The hawk was struck with sudden terror at the idea that he could have made an error and been on the path to slighting or insulting the girl he so badly wanted to befriend. Maybe he really did need the man's help. So as Sunjata lowered himself to Gawen's minuscule height, the boy wandered closer, eyes bright and attentive and nearly shaking with energy as he awaited instruction and enlightenment.

Sunjata

As he listened, his navy rimmed ears swooped and swayed to what Gawen said. He seemed passionate, interested, and dare he think ‘willing to do anything’ to get to know this girl. Yet, he still didn’t seem to know much about the girl he seemed to be obsessed with. So, with his wings flat against the snow, he nodded along listening. The child spoke of snowdrops, learning of uses and what not for the plant he still wasn’t sure if it was real or not. So he pondered for a moment, lips pulling together in a tight line as he thought. If the lady was of the healing kind, he remembered them being easily persuaded and push overs from back home. If things served right, the girl was just like that.

In Sunjata’s youth, he had done many things to try to sway and snag the ladies’ attentions. If he came across a healer type, the only thing that really captured their attention was wounds from battle. In Sunjata’s mind, courage. He needed Gawen to understand that if he really wanted the girl to obsess over him, what better than to have her tend to some wounds? Sure, he could learn and know of all the herbs that would heal him himself, but what good would that do when you could have a lady swooning over your body, patching you up after a good long day of sparring?

So he mulled over his thoughts some, before seeking out the amber colt in front of him. “I mean, you could do that. But you need to be… Whats the word for it?” He grumbled, still trying to get used to all the words Helovian’s spoke. “Moedige…” He hummed at first under his breath. “Ah! Courageous. You need to not be shy. Just go up to her and talk. Take her on adventures. Fight for the lady. That’ll definitely get you some points in her book.” He offered the boy another Cheshire smile. “You don’t want to be pushed around, Gawen.” He noted, his tone becoming somewhat serious. Sure the boy could be a nerd, but that wouldn’t do him any good when a good strong warrior came to swoop his woman from beneath his wing, now would it?
