Aelfwine

It had been days since she had returned to the Edge. There was an awkwardness that settled in her chest as she thought about what her dearest brother had been up to when the dappled doe watched over Maude. Had he felt too lonely to stay around and be with his daughter? Had he felt too lonely to where he needed to create more life? It was a thought that danced around her mind over and over again, a nightmare in sheep clothing, as she tried to refrain from imagining her brother sleeping with someone. It wasn’t something she wanted to think about, but his actions had caused such a rift in her mind. What would Maude think? What would Arah think if she ever did return?

Besides, the last thing she wanted to have with Tilney was the talk. But still, she had to know if what the mare in the labyrinth said was true. Had her brother been promiscuous? Had he brought another to bed with him? Especially that woman of all people? Her brows furrowed, but she stepped cautiously over the shards of glass on the border of the Edge. Her green gaze trailing from tree to tree as she searched for the caramel stallion. She first tried where he slept, but to no avail. Her cloven hooves tiptoeing over the snow that had accumulated in small drafts against the earth.

Her next destination was the greenhouse, surely he would be there? If he wasn’t sleeping and wasn’t at the greenhouse, what else could he be doing? She nearly came to an abrupt stop with a shriek as her mind dangled Tilney sleeping with another again as a third option for the Moon Doctor’s whereabouts. She shivered once, flicking her ebony tail against her hocks as she reached the clearing with the greenhouse. “Tilney? I have a very important matter I must speak with you about.” She called out, green gaze staring uncomfortably among the glistening glass of the greenhouse.

HAPPINESS CAN BE FOUND EVEN IN THE DARKEST OF TIMES

A physicians day was generally long and tedious - this one had been absolutely no exception. Caring for the southern or eastern plants in frostfall had been quite the task, and luckily with new Nurses it was relieved ever so slightly. Still, the days grew long. At least Maude was usually occupied with tasks when she wasnt bleating after Katua, and it meant he could keep watch over her too.
Since that 'episode' with Glasgow he had tried to find her in all her usual places to talk about what exactly had happened, but to no avail. Her home tree had remained empty for what had seemed like many weeks now.

It really had caused Tilney to wonder if he was becoming a monster. Who on earth did things like that besides, well, his father? There were a small number of stags he could think of off the top of his head who leapt from mare to mare, but to never speak to them again like he had done to both females? Even Glasgow? Even while he still belonged to Arah?
It was these thoughts which had caused many a meltdown, and it had got to the point where he would prevent himself from thinking about much else other than work or Maude. Tilney was sick himself, or so he was convinced. Sick with grief for misplacing Arah, Ultima, and now his dignity.
There had to be a way forward didn't there? Or was he simply a kite blowing in the wind, only swaying to and fro...?

It was his sisters voice that had awoken the ginger man; He'd fallen asleep in the greenhouse again, his lantern crooning over a batch of newly potted Aloe Vera he hoped to store away in the warth of the greenhouse's shelter. Raising his head, he looked outside the fogged glass, seeing the distorted image of his only full sibling. An important matter? Gollly, it sounded all a bit too serious for Tilney in his current state of awareness.
Giving a great yawn the physician raised himself from the greenhouse floor and tottled out, mane a mess over his antlers, cloak and collar fallen astray to the right side of his body rather than laying directly over his rump.
"Sister" the unicorn yawned once again, eyes gleaming. He was glad to see her, but what was this urgent matter? Upon further inspection of her countenance he noticed just how concerned she appeared. Being her brother, he could only tease her furled brow. "Wake up on the wrong side of the meadow did you Dear?" Tilney giggled, tilting his cranium and knocking his antlers against hers.
"You look mighty cross, what's wrong?"

The dappled doe hated this feeling. It burned and bubbled around her stomach as if it were trying to make her sick. As Tilney emerged from the greenhouse, his eyes seemed glazed over by sleep and as he yawned her brows furrowed ever so slightly as her lips frowned further. “Sister” he began, and she listened quietly (albeit impatiently). “Wake up on the wrong side of the meadow, did you Dear?” In any other circumstance she would have laughed at the idea. But this was a serious matter, and she half wanted to spit back in his face “Oh, did you wake up on the wrong side of the mare today?” But Aelfwine was civil in times where she didn’t want to be.

So she waited until he was finished, his giggle enveloping the world around them in the quiet silence of the Edge. “This is a very serious matter, Tilney.” She snapped, ears flickering back in sadness of how she was so short with her elder brother. “I’m sorry. I – I just learned of some news and I want to see if it’s true.” Her lips twitched into a frown again. “I… heard from someone… That you haven’t – uhm – been true to Arah.” Her gaze grew steady as she hoped to capture Tilney’s gaze. This was far more awkward than she had imagined it to be.

She shifted uncomfortably for a few moments. “Have you slept with others, Tilney? It’s not really in my interest to know, but if you have someone I spoke with claims to be pregnant with your seed. She … She thinks she’s having twins.” The corners of her eyes creased with concern, cloven hooves restlessly moving aimlessly across the earth as she waited for his answer. She really didn’t care for his love life, but she also needed to know if it was true. While she was baby sitting Maude, was he really out there in the wilds of Helovia getting laid?

HAPPINESS CAN BE FOUND EVEN IN THE DARKEST OF TIMES

The harshness in his sisters gaze and voice choked the air of all its ambience until it had drowned and all that remained was silence. It was certainly not a good silence, but it wasnt a dark silence, nor was it evil. It was filthy and crude, shameful and awkward. Tilneys smile could only fall, his gaze returning from the depths of the forest to the mirrored one belonging to Aelfwine. While she did glare, she also gazed back at him with truth. She spoke ot him with concern, not out of angst.

It was dark news she came to him with. Had she heard a horrible rumor about him through the grapevine? Had someone decided to tear him down? Or was it something true.
When the words left her mouth, the words that spoke of not being true to Arah, Tilneys entire gaze and skull tore away. He dare not look at her, because his only answer could be to confirm the hideous news.

It was true, he had layed with not just one other but two others. While dispairing her loss he had indulged and he had abused not only her trust but the women he had engaged with. To tell Aelfwine that it was true however, to allow those words to pass his lips were impossible. Eyes clenched shut and teeth slightly bared the ginger man tore himself away, walking a few paces back towards the greenhouse.

And just when he thought it couldn't get any worse for him, or for Aelfwine, she told him of the womans pregnancy... and twins.
Tilneys breathing had increased, his lungs begining to heave. It seemed all his dispair, every mistake had come to this one final enchore, but how would he endure?

First he gave an almighty stomp, the king he had never given to the earth before. Then came an almighty roar.
He shouted at the gods for taking Arah from him, or maybe even giving her to him. They had dangled the very fruit of life before him, and now that he was one gasping breath away they snatched it up.
Downwards he had fallen, like an angel from heaven with wings ripped from their back. How could he rebuild? There were others he had destructed in the process, other women and now children soon to be born out of his mess.

And then came a tear. It rolled cown his cheek, staining it along the way. The stallion stumbled, his ballance off thrown as he hung his head in silence for what seemed like hours.
"Aelfwine," he whispered "Please help me"

Aelfwine

There was silence after her words. A silence that didn’t deny the idea that he had been sleeping around. Perhaps this was a far deeper problem than she had originally imagined. A frown found her lips as he pulled away from her, as he moved away from his full blood relative. The woman that would understand his pain, share in it, and help him. Did he understand that despite all the things this would cause, that nobody would really think twice about it? Plenty of noble creatures that dwelled in Helovia had children from many different wombs and seed. It wasn’t something that brought them down in their statuses. So she stared at the back of her brother, the caramel stallion as he engaged in his rage. First, letting it rip from his chest then out into the world.

She stepped toward him then, cloven hooves gripping the earth tenderly from where Tilney had stomped in his rampage. First, her velveteen muzzle traced his shoulder, caringly, as her gaze looked upon the lantern that seemed to hang haphazardly from his tines. “Aelfwine, please help me.” She nodded into him, lifting her heavy head and draping it over his withers, her mane creating a little blanket against his back as if she had the power to shield him from everyone. A soft sigh slipped through her nose, wondering if this would be a chance to confide in him of her own sexuality. But the awkwardness that billowed in her stomach had been replaced with a hint of despair.

Quietly, she nuzzled Tilney’s shoulder that was opposite of her, ashen lids closing over bright emeralds. “It’ll be okay, dear Brother. We’ll figure this out.” She cooed to him, her breath was warm as it washed over his caramel hide. “She’s due any day now. I suggest you go and see her, see if they’re yours. Her name is Nephele and she lives in the Throat.” She began, a gentle whisper against him as she began to pull away, moving in front of him to seek his eyes and brush away the tears that had fallen from his eyes. “Then, if it is true, you must tell Maude before anyone else does. She has to hear it from you. I’m here for you Tilney. If ever you need to talk.” She tried to offer him a small solemn smile. “I love you, Brother. This won’t change a thing.

HAPPINESS CAN BE FOUND EVEN IN THE DARKEST OF TIMES

Aelfwine's touch was soothing to say the least; his twitching, infuriated skin began to cool and his breaths began to steady under the influence of the womans cooing words. How nice it was to hear someone else's kind words for a change - it was always Tilney giving the cheers of salutations and warm welcomes, words of encouragement and humble offers. When was he ever given that in return?

It was only from the likes of Maude he recieved such kindness, and now Aelfwine. Perhaps everyone else was much too busy in their own lives to stress a simple 'good day'.
But now was not the time for wallowing on thank you's or kindness he may or may not be owed, for there was a great task to be done.
A new challenge had arisen which involved a trek to the Dragons Throat. He would seek out the one named Nephele - the woman claiming to carry his children. He'd never learned the amazonian's name, and to his horror Nephele had fit her description remarkably well as if he had been whispered it before.

It was a task that at the present time seemed quite impossible. With his relationship with glasgow in pieces after their own affair, he didn't know who to count on to watch Maude and he couldn't ask that much of Aelfwine alone. Besides, it would be such a soul destroying trip. To visit his children and then leave them without a father would be gutless as ever . Perhaps it would weaken the blow if he just kept away?

Then came the task of telling Maude. How would he do this though? Would she even understand? She was not yet of an age where she could comprehend how offspring came about, how it could be possible for other brothers to exist without Arah. It would be a cruel process of understanding, one he would have to try his best to explain to her.
All Tilney could do was nod to his sister, and pray he could get through it.
