All my life I’ve been searching for something
He waited, head no longer bowed, but eyes keen and eager, ardent, expecting a slash, a beating, or immorality, because they’d seen what he was and what he could’ve become. Soon his eyes drifted away from the leaders (for there was apprehension gliding there too, swimming along his flesh and carving its way through his tainted heart), watched as more and more came to the Queen’s siren-shrieks and banshee wails, smiled a little at Enna’s approach, listened intently to the speeches, to the rites, to the rituals and convictions, to promises that could be held or fall all the same. The prince felt like a speck of dust again, naught more than a tiny bit of soil and earth, forged for minute steps and nothingness; to move another forward, for a small, miniscule destiny allotted and chained to other stars and galaxies, worthless and inept, as they all united and spoke, as they all clamored for their chances, for their opportunities, to advance from where they stood now. He’d been too idle, spent too many hours searching endlessly for chances that had glimmered only for a short snippet of time – then disappearing forever, leaving him to pursue shadows and cloaks, but never enough daggers. The youth wanted to stare at the ground once more, feeling foolish for stepping forward, for his brazenness, for his audacity, because it had no place in a kingdom, in a sovereign, that was trying to surge from the ashes (and it was odd; because he’d always believed in his boldness, and now it stuttered and stopped him cold, left him drained and nervous).

But Hotaru’s words coiled over him as she spoke his name, and he snapped his attention to her, staring openly (trying not to let his jaw drop), as she granted him the armor, and title of General. “I will. Thank you,” was all he could manage for the moment, swallowing down the boiling, the brewing, of shock and awe, touching over the cold bits of metal that was destined to be fastened over his frame, trying not to be haunted by the spectral notion of his father’s old rank suddenly sliding across his rapier. He took a few moments of self-assurance, breathing deeply, flickering the deep layers of his eyes back to the Queen and the King, son of the Reaper, born to play some strange part in all of their medieval games. The grin curling over his lips hid his disquiet and concern (that he wouldn’t be enough, not now, not ever, and why had he even bothered to try), the mischief, the elation, the buoyancy of a youth given an ounce of power pervaded the slate of his muscles, the warrior structure he’d been devout to since he’d come of age. Then, he took a chance, pressed his lingering stare to the others who’d taken up their cutlasses, their knives, their blades (Beloved, the shadowy mare, Arion, the promised Corporal), and smiled once more: triumphant and glorious. “My brothers and sisters in arms, let’s show the world what the Basin is made of.”

The elk at the maiden's side shuddered as he glanced at the Valkyrie's companion. A particularly corrosive substance seemed to seethe out of the hound's mouth as it snapped and growled from it's post at the Lady's flank.

'Does the pup scare you?' Frost teased, flicking her emeralds to her companion.

'Not a pup,' the elk hissed.

The Haruspex bit her tongue, holding back a quiet giggle. In truth, she didn't blame her bonded for being hesitant of the Lady's companion. The maiden was just as wary of the hound as he.

Frost abandoned her thoughts of the hound rather quickly, moving her emeralds back to Hotaru with a grateful smile slipping onto her lips. "I don't believe an escort will be necessary," she decided, glancing toward Cassius. He seemed to be a man who could hold his own, and if not, she had a bit of sparring experience under her belt. "Thank you kindly, my Lady," Frost stated amiably with a respectful dip of her tiara.

The mottled mare lifted her head to listen further to the proclamations of the Reaper and the newly appointed general, the latter of whom she offered a congratulatory smile and nod to. It seemed the meeting was disbanding, all things settled and sorted for now.

The Haruspex turned animatedly to Cassius, a bright smile on her dark lips. "If you've any business to attend to in the Basin, try to do so before nightfall. We leave at daybreak for the Falls," She stated in her most amicable tone. She proffered an affable smile to the gray before turning away with a gentle swish of her leonine tail, the elk following closely in her delicate footsteps.

For once, the old stallion gets his way. The Basins rosy Lady grants his promotion without hesitation or apparent apprehension while the Lord stands idly by, silent and brooding. A lopsided grin slips across the elder blacks grizzled face, beaming first in the direction of the mare at the head of the gathering and then at the smaller Thief beside her, the right corner of his mouth curling upward with an impish twist of the lips. He only half listens to the rest of the words exchanged, instead sweeping into an exaggerated bow that brushes the curtain of his beard along the ground and tilts his backswept horns forward in salute. The gesture is quick and facetious, an appropriately false pledge between the leader of liars and the King of disrepute, a silent challenge to the girl to command him, as neither the Valkyrie nor the Reaper have yet been able. Shit rolls downhill after all.

The snake at his brow takes advantage of the moment to weave his little head forward, tongue lashing out at the air around him in a frenzied attempt to capture and memorize the overwhelming array of scents mingling together here. He wants to gather names and faces too, to piece together an entire encyclopedia of the creatures they’ve met, but his vision is severely lacking in range and clarity, yielding nothing but fuzzy washes of color from anything farther away than the tips of the old stallions bent and haphazard whiskers. Thermal vision is no help for physical descriptions, so he mentally nudges the old man for assistance, to have better quality (by comparison) images provided to him through their supernatural connection, but already the black is rising and turning to leave the gathering, his tangled, tufted tail waving in victory.

A sense of dread holds the young stallion. Unaccustomed to the workings of the Aurora Basin, uncertain how or when he should stay his tongue. But a different voice breaks the threshold gathered. One that lilts out and defines itself in a steady tone.

The name Frost Fyre and Haruspex fill in the gaps for her presence. And she is much more meaningful than the multitude of faces and souls he cannot possibly distinguish in one day. She is chocolate sprinkled with sugar dust. Striking green eyes and a solid white horn that juts out from her dark forelock. His eyes dart to the creature by her side, and finds its presence both odd and bewildering. He shares this same discovery with the other companions, not yet orientated to their purpose or function. But the glance is brief, and Cassius resettles his eyes upon her instead.

A small smile lends itself to his maw, subtle, as he finds that Frost Fyre is in agreement with his suggestion. And the dread that binds his previous self, releases, giddy, in anticipation of the Lady’s decision. He nods to both mares when they make eye contact to him. Although, it is with Hotaru’s voice that his breath holds still, clinging to the idea that it would be lovely to travel the lands and embrace this new Helovia with the quest of knowledge settled before him.

With a set of attentive ears pressed forward, a grin marks his new found title and mission. “Yes, of course. Thank you m’lady.” His voice is breathless, for having held it for so long. And with a deep inhale he is released from his previous worries with a determined gaze.

I will not fail you. He promises from within, too shy to express said loyalty – for it did not stand firm just yet. Cassius’ excitement swells within, so much that he can ignore the snapping of the lady’s wolf, and the jaws that hang beside her hoof. There is too much to distract his mind with.

It is Frost Fyre’s consent that tugs his attention back to the mare. The decision to forgo an escort comes with a delayed nod from the stallion. Hesitating, wondering if he could fight for the sake of protecting them both – the thought removed the pure joy trapped within him. When he honestly couldn’t answer the thought, the Frost Fyre’s voice refocused his gaze – surprised to see her so near.

Cassius offered a friendly smile and a dip to his head. “Yes. I don’t think there will be much for me to do anyways… But you can be certain I’ll be ready in the morning.”

He watched her for a while as she turned to leave. When her form could no longer be tracked amidst the natural flora, his gaze drew back to the depths of the Basin. With a reluctant sigh, he made his own path within.
