To anyone on a nighttime patrol, what they witnessed must have been strange. One minute there was utter darkness in a small patch on the border. Not even the faint moonlight managed to penetrate the void. Then a young pale mare appeared on the border. She didn't step through the darkness nor did the darkness dissolve. Instead she simply just appeared with a bored expression and indifferent attitude. Ráeru blinked, although the darkness had not been a odd occurrence for her, indeed to Ráeru...well she herself was the bizarre reoccurrence in her life. Peering into the land of The Edge she pondered calling to those who resided within. The hour late did not matter to the mare, she never thought much about how her decisions may effect those around her. It was not an arrogance, instead she rather just lacked any thoughtfulness.

Tilting her head back she looked upon the moon, wondering if the Lady herself lived up there. Well, the two preferred the darkness, surely the goddess would not mind if Ráeru had a quick inspection of the Edge. "My Lady." She greeted the goddess and then stepped over the border, eyes casting a curious look for any potential herd members. A guide would be greatly appreciated while she toured through The Edge...although she wasn't too fond of herd leaders. Often they were far too busy to properly show her around their homes. So instead she helped herself, walking slowly into the headland waiting for someone to pick up on her presence. When her glass hooves slipped on the snow she paused and rightened, huffing in confusion. After most of her childhood being spent in The Basin she was usually more skilled when it came to managing walking over the slippery snow.

Straighten up she took a few more steps forward, gradually gaining confidence until her leg sank into the snow. The bank had appeared deceptively shallow in the faint moonlight and she'd fallen for it. "Damn it." Wincing she lifted her front left leg and inspected her aching leg. Something hidden under the snow had sliced through her skin, blood was already welling up at the sight of the rather straight incision. Fortunately she doubted the need to pay a visit to the residential healers. Yet of course now she'd leave a fairly obvious trail behind her, with a sigh she glanced around the edge. Someone would undoubtedly find her soon.

Ráeru would like to have a look around the Edge and maybe stay for a while. Open to anyone.

Alysanne
It had been a long time since Alysanne had slept peacefully in her nest, a long time since she had enjoyed being lulled to sleep by the sounds of the Edge at night. Now, she napped here and there throughout the day and wandered at night - unable to shut her mind off and thinking that, at the very least, she could keep patrolling the Edge to see if anything was amiss.

Her walk led her toward the borders, green eyes flickering over the near-silent night looking for any signs of movement. There would be others out here too, she believed - warriors on their own patrols and Iona too had a habit of scouting around. Alysanne’s gaze flickered momentarily upwards, checking the skies to see if she could spy her twin, but as she did so movement in the snow near the border caught her attention and brought it back down to ground level.

There was someone there! The painted pegasus changed her path to approach the unicorn - thinking to herself how much the girl seemed to match both the snow and moonlight - when dark spots in the snow interrupted such cheerful thoughts. She had been a medic for a long enough time to recognize blood in moonlight and how it looked almost black. “Oh! My dear are you alright? I’m afraid there are still some pieces of glass lurking beneath the snow.” The cut did not seem overly bad from what Alysanne could see but still, she hated to see someone else in pain and not really have anything that she could help with. Her instinct attempted to find that magic she once held, to wield what the Moon Doctors could and call forth a gentle rush of dark wind to heal up the incision on this pale girl’s leg.

But she couldn’t. That magic was gone and she had no other to take its place. Not yet.

She would get to proper greetings and introductions, but she wasn’t quite able to just move on from the blood quite yet - not until she made sure the girl was okay. So Alysanne’s soft green eyes focused on her as she offered some suggestions for what they could do. “I don’t have anything with me to help, but we could find some moss to at least soak up the blood or a healer to clear it right up if you'd prefer?”

I'll carry you on my shoulders, never set you down.
Ferry you through the coldness, never let you down.

Someone approached and the young mare looked up curiously. There was a black and white mare on patrol, her green eyes looking at Ráeru with concern. Pausing with a grimace she waited for the other mare to meet her, calmly as if not at all concerned about being caught trespassing. Not the she'd gotten far before the land itself had seemed eager to repeal her. "I am okay. I thank you miss." Feeling as if she were under a spotlight she shivered and glanced down at her bleeding leg. There was not much concern in her expression as she inspected the injury, more understanding at to why the slice had been so clean and precise. Now her tone was surprised and her expression twisted with a dry humour wonder why they'd decided to hide such a dangerous material in the earth. "Glass." Ráeru repeated with another chuckle, eyes now rasing from her wound back up to the elegant lady that spoke to her. "Whatever for?" It was an odd thing the stash under the snow, especially as the girl assumed it was a time-consuming object to make. Although The Edge was always crafting glass items, perhaps they had so much glass they simply decided to leave the spare species laying around. Well, if that was the case she could happily inform them that she had in fact found a use for their spare glass. It also gave her a strange sense of belonging with her own natural glass hooves and horn.

They both looked back down at the cut on her leg. No doubt the mare would also be able to tell that it was not a particularly bad injury. Already the bleeding had eased slightly, although it did sting. Another spot of blood landed on the once pristine white snow, which was now stained with her blood causing a curious colour effect. The red stain deep into the snow and called with the freezing temperature while a few fresh flakes has drifted on top of the drips of blood. It created a beautiful crystal effect, like the blood was trapped within the snow and was shining up at them. "My mother and father used to be capable of healing many different types of injuries." Looking up from the blood the girl informed the dainty woman of her lineage. As she spoke she pictured the woman she envisioned as her mother (the memories were influenced by Hotaru's appearance) and the dark bloodied colour of her father's coat. "Rather good at it too...or so I am told." There was no pain or sadness in her tones as she spoke, the girl was not well acquainted with such emotions. Instead there was a hint of warmth and longing although it quickly disappeared and the indifferent attitude once again clung to her pale coat. There was little point of speaking about them now as they would not step out of the darkness and heal her. Huffing a small frosted cloud clung to her nose before drifting and dispersing into the darkness.

Ráeru hadn't inherited any healing abilities, instead she'd been gifted with a darkness. Perhaps if she ever decided to settle down in a herd then she might look into the art of healing. If she was granted permission to stay for a few seasons, then maybe she would take some healing lessons from the resident Moon Doctor. Although the last group meeting did not go partially well and she'd stuck out like a sore thumb. She never quite seemed to fit in and rather liked being on her own. It would need to be a fairly accepting herd for her to remain longer than a season or two. Still, she guessed that all the interesting stories she'd heard about The Edge couldn't all be false. Additionally she rather liked the idea of staying under the Moon Goddess' gaze for a while. "I appreciate the offer for a healer but it's unnecessary." After a moment she nodded with a shaky smile, grateful to accept some help. Besides she wanted to stop staining the snow with her blood, no matter how pretty it looked. "but perhaps something to stop the blood would be helpful." They did not exchange any introductions and in truth Ráeru did not care either way. After a moment she thought about her manners, and cleared her throat slightly uncomfortable. She'd never been particularly comfortable with conversations. "I...uh...thank you." She finally managed although it was slightly awkward.

Dreams did not come often to the girl. But it was a reprieve from the real world, to fall away from reality utterly blanketed in unconsciousness. It did not matter whether or not she was visited with visions, only that her body could receive rest. Although, it did owe to a monotonous lifestyle; wake up, eat, wander about, sleep… repeat, and repeat; maybe a spar here or there.

Was she searching for something?

Perhaps.

But wherever that something was, it was hiding well within the trees, hidden away in snow, dormant and cold.

With a quiet sigh, she shifted from her resting place that night. Uncertain why her body would not fall into a deeper sleep; the youth had tried several times to close her eyes. And yet, it did not take her from the things that troubled her. Annoyed by these frivolous challenges, she dashed carelessly into the snow ahead of her. And once cleared of the trees, she shot out into the sky with a relieved breath. To feel the air's weight pressed against her skin and caress her feathers, it dissolved her trepidation and soothed – for a moment – all that clouded her mind.

And dark was the night, the world merely highlighted by the strength of the moon. The child had hardly interacted with the Gods, let alone the Goddess of the Moon. But Ru had her doubts, and rightly so. She could not depend on any of them, and did not expect their help in return. With so little information to reflect on these beings, it was hard to place any faith in their presence. Despite the idea that perhaps, they could help her, she doubted their benevolence – such things in life did not come that easy, after all.

At least it was beautiful, the moon, all silver and punctured with distant, grey scars. The stars were shining also, celestial bodies glimmering all the while the world stood still in darkness.

Though not all was silent, as something odd caught the young mare’s gaze. Where the moon’s light ceased outside the herd’s borders for several seconds. She blinked, perhaps something caught in her eyes? Despite her efforts it did not change, until it stopped and things appeared normal.

Obligated, though more curious than duty-bound, the pegasi maintained her elevation and closed in on the area. She wasn’t entirely camouflaged in the dark night. Moon’s rays could just as easily make out her feathered head, or the tips of her primaries. Regardless, she tried her best to keep quiet in the air – until she happened upon the duo. Words muffled, barely there.

Without question, she swooped in on them. Diving sharply – she’d been practicing that – and using her wings to back-pedal in an effort to stop her momentum. She braced for the frozen earth, and slid briefly before them with a low rumbling from her chest. Wings out stretched for balance.

She knew very little of the World’s Edge, so each of the individuals present were simply strangers to Ru. She hadn’t realized until now, that either one of them could potentially be intruders. Her nostrils flared to take in their scents. Energy coiling in the girl’s body, as she worked to determine the cause behind the white mare’s entry. She did not smell whole-heartedly from the World’s Edge, but how could she know for certain?

Delayed was her reaction when she realized the smell of blood was coming from her, the one with the transparent horn.

With a sharp frown she tilted her head, and trilled in a curious tone. While staring at the forelimb, cut and bleeding into the snow.

Aly could hardly blame the girl for being a little confused as to why there was glass beneath the snow. She smiled herself, gesturing with her dark head off in the distance where the pieces of the wall that were still standing were almost visible in the night. “Oh! There was a glass wall here once - it crumbled and, well, it’s been a big project to try to clean it up again. I am very sorry that you’ve cut yourself on it, though.” The wall and its remains were such a part of Aly’s everyday life that she barely even thought about the wall anymore - except to curse the existence of what parts of it remained and what it had stood for. There had been pieces of glass here and there around the border for years now. Although, hopefully, it would not remain like that for long. Her co-leader at least had a plan to take care of that (and replace it with other dangerous glass things but, well, at least peaceful visitors in the night wouldn’t be slicing open their legs anymore right?).

She wanted to ask after the girl’s parents - finding it always fascinating to hear about other healers - but before she could, they were joined by a winged mare that Alysanne didn’t completely recognize - just vaguely. She was sure that she had seen the other pegasus around the Edge before. Soon, when she remembered her manners, she would make introductions. She trilled a curious tone, but before Aly could try to guess at her meaning, her attention was drawn back to the pale unicorn girl who accepted the offer for something that would stop the bleeding. At the very least, that was something Aly could do. “Of course. Hemlock, if you could.” She spoke aloud to the small owl, though it wasn’t really necessary. He was already swooping but it wasn’t off towards the trees - it was towards the girl. He hooted at her as he landed near her injured leg and Alysanne realized how foolish she was for forgetting the gift he had been given. They did not have any herd healers nearby but they did have Hemlock. She shook her head with a small laugh at herself. “How could I forget! Hemlock, my companion, can heal minor injuries, and I think that’s just what this calls for.” She smiled brightly at the mare, always careful to make sure that they had absolute consent before acting (though really, only Tembovu had been stubborn enough to flat out refuse healing before)

Provided no objections from the girl, Hemlock hopped closer and used his magic for the first time - it was not much, perhaps, but it should be enough to clot the bleeding and send the cut along on the healing process. If she had shied or shoved him away, of course, he would have respected her wishes and left to go find some moss to help sop up the mess.

If allowed to heal her, once he was finished he would hoot once more in a rather friendly manner at the unicorn, before flying up to land between Alysanne’s ears - his favoured spot.

“Better?” She asked, her tone hopeful, and then finally the rest of her manners caught up to her, now that the immediate injury had been taken care of. “My name’s Alysanne, by the way, though you can just call me Aly.” She smiled at the pegasus mare too, not thinking they had been introduced yet either, before turning her soft green gaze back to the unicorn. “And welcome to the Edge - is there anything we can help you with?”

I'll carry you on my shoulders, never set you down.
Ferry you through the coldness, never let you down.

Listening to the woman's explanation of the glass wall, Ráeru glanced towards what remained. Not a lot was visible except for a small shining part, the moonlight reflected on the surface. It must have been quite an impressive sight, a wall of glass that protected the herd from outsiders attacking. Confusion caused the girl to frown at the apologising lady. "Don't be ridiculous." The pale mare shook her head, glancing again towards her injured leg. Whatever remained standing solid and no matter how much was buried under the snow it was not anyones fault, in fact if she'd waited for an escort their entire situation may have been avoided. "It's hardly an individuals fault." It did not occur to the young mare that the lady was not talking blame but rather just generally sorry that she'd been injured. For the most part she took words too literally and often did not understand other's true meaning. In any case she offered a small smile to the lady, pleased that she'd encountered someone understanding. Besides, if she ended up remaining and spent some more time in this herd land she'd discover where the dangers lay. Yet more likely she'd move on when again she was sure her family was not lurking in the vast numbers of the herd. The pale dove did not know if they'd left Helovia or still lurked within the boundaries but as outcasts, alone and battling the elements. Just as she had been for sometime now.

Getting the impression that the painted lady was going speak, she waited, comfortable in silence or letting others take control and direction of the conversation. There was a strange sound, the beat of powerful wings and then suddenly the two became three. Her breathing became harder, and she backed up a few steps, studying the new comer with a certain amount of shock. The mare was thick, well muscled and seemed strong, able to easily defeat any opponents that she faced. The familiar feeling of darkness prickled inside of her, calling to her and wanted to be released. Instead Ráeru shot a pleading look towards the mare and then glanced towards the new comer suddenly feeling insecure. Discomfort flashed across her face as anger and anxiousness peaked inside her. Even as an older mare she was no more comfortable with situations changing so quickly. It would have been okay if she was expecting more to arrive but the sudden arrival was threatening to tip her over the edge. Glaring stubbornly down at her bleeding leg she refused to look at the new comer, preferring to speak either directly with the dignified lady or with her injured limb. It would be easier to ignore the new comer, act as if she wasn't even here. So the dove continued as if only her and the painted lady remained, speaking softly as she accepted the offer of healing. Gradually her breathing calmed. Her posture shifted into something more comfortable.

As the painted lady spoke to the small owl, Ráeru smiled, she rather liked the small companion. "Curious fellow." She remarked with a small smile, watching as he swooped down before the favour had even asked the favour of him. He flew with as much elegance as his lady had, although it wasn't off towards the directions of the trees. Instead the her landed beside her injured leg. Watching him closely with a curious expression, Ráeru only looked up when the delicate lady spoke again with a laugh. "Oh. That's quite impressive." She remarked appreciating all forms of magic, especially those with the art of healing. Additionally never before had she encountered a companion with such abilities. Nodding some more encouragement to the owl, Ráeru waited with baited breath. Warm spread across the slice, healing and soothing. The the stinging vanished as if there had been no wound at all, the pale dove smiled appreciatively. "Very well done, I thank you Hemlock." Finished he hooted once more in a rather friendly manner at the her, and then flew up to land between the painted lady's ears.

"Yes." She replied to the the lady's question was a gentle smile. Indeed she felt much better about her current situation and even managed a friendly gesture - dipping her head in greeting. "I am Ráeru." Again her words were only for Alysanne, having completely disassociated herself with the other lurking mare. It was not a lack of respect more a complete lack of awareness of how her actions might be perceived. For all Ráeru thought the larger mare simply did not exist.
Ah. The question. What could they help her with. More, what are you doing here? "I'm looking for my family." After a moment she considered Hemlock and her previous words about her family's healing abilities. Perhaps that was an art she ought to look into. "I also wish to stay in order to learn the secrets of healing." Dipping her head towards the small owl she managed a smile. Before the lady offered to introduce her to any leaders, she ought to warn Aly of her flight nature. "I do not generally remain in once place too long...although...if I find what I am searching for..." Her word trailed off, unsure if finding her family would help her remain in one place for longer than a few seasons. Was there any truth to her words?

It had been a long journey, maybe it would be nice to stick around anyway.

The reaction of the pale unicorn adds sharpness to Ru’s features. To the furrow of critical brows, and the tightening of her lips to a firm line. Agitation rolls out by the way of heavy breathe rolling into the air, the shuffling of steps, and the blatant assessment of cool eyes that prod her body. Some sort of emotion swirls behind their features, but the girl is without sufficient data to place just what it is. Possibilities no longer scramble for meaning, for there are perhaps several to contend with. The stranger hides something, the stranger is genuine, the stranger either poses as a risk or not at all. And her arrival is either a marker of things to be wary of, or a mild reaction to her sudden intrusion.

Nonetheless she is dismissed from thoughtless eyes as they deflect her gaze for the cut on their leg.

Ru casts her gaze to the transparent horn instead, to the hooves that warp the ground underneath the mare’s feet. She is spared the obvious questions at least, and she is easily made happy to look through the other side of the glass, and observe that which does not recognize her.

An ear twists to the owl – bizarre, how the painted mare commanded it with her tongue. The girl, unaware of companions and the truth behind their bonds, assumes that most of the horses here have simply trained an assortment of creatures. And yet, they are hardly the same – and that hypothesis wavers in the midst of the dragons that follow their masters, or the raptors and snakes possessively curled in their masters immediate vicinities. The duo-toned mare, as tall as them, as finely muscled and sporting a few scars of her own, chuckles into the night and offers that said companion is capable of magic. Ru hums in this enlightenment, and watches between master and creature as they perform the favor to the intruder several steps ahead.

The pair before her seem quaint and polite, civil, between speech and acts of… ‘kindness’? Whatever it was, as Ru watched in quiet fascination, it was blooming between these two individuals in a world that did not include her. A witness, rather than an active participant, and it made her smile cruelly as these thoughts aligned with her previous worries.

They exchange names, though the girl remains quiet. There is a story unfolding and Ru doesn’t care for the patience of their inquiry. She simply nods to Alysanne, a brief light of recognition stirs – simply from what she’s heard. What’s she’s glean from her brief time thus, and now it makes sense that the black and white Alysanne provides shelter for the one who trespasses the Edge.

Ru shifts in her spot unaccustomed to standing still for so long. The girl was not idle to chatter, although her attention remained restrained on the pair. For a moment she stretches out her wings, and lends a folded wing to brush off the wetness of snow from her cheek.

Ráeru finally admits her intentions out loud, and for once the girl is not disturbed by the similarities of their paths. She has closed off such possibilities, has ignored their implications, and takes this information rather blandly into the pockets of her mind. If the Lady wishes it, she will keep her eyes for what Ráeru searches for. Not because she cares for someone she does not know. Even if Lyanna had offered the same…

It was simply for duty, for her credibility as honor bound. Because none of that involved emotions, or good intentions – did it? If she could prove her worth, in a means she was actually capable of doing, than perhaps she may have found a place to call home.

Idly she swishes her feathered tail as consequence of their stagnant bodies. And awaits further details that perhaps Alysanne might be able to confirm. At least that would allow for the earth hued youth to perform her duties accordingly. Her gaze drifts from the quieting unicorn, and offers an expectant look to Alysanne.

Oh yes, Hemlock liked the horn mare very much indeed! He appreciated greatly the horses that actually acknowledged him and he was glad that this first test of his magic was actually successful. He was telling Aly through their bond that she had better welcome the mare into the herd. Alysanne wasn’t exactly the type to turn anyone away without due cause, she had only ever spoken out against one mare that tried to join the herd and she had certainly had a good reason for that. Aurelia was known, after all, for starting fires both literally and figuratively.

But the mare before them now was polite and honest, and as she listened to Ráeru introduce herself and explain her reasons for coming to the Edge, Alysanne didn’t get any sort of vibe from the younger mare that would warn her off of inviting her in. She glanced over to the silent Ru, watching the other pegasus’ reaction as well, but the mare seemed relaxed and curious despite her lack of vocalization. Perhaps, Alysanne wondered, she couldn’t speak? She felt curious herself but this was hardly the time to investigate such matters, so when their gazes met she smiled faintly before turning back to the pale girl and responding to her words, attempting to ease her worries. “That’s fine, Ráeru. We don’t ask members to pledge themselves forever to the Edge - if you cause no trouble you are welcome to stay here however long or short you’d like. I know some tricks about healing myself and we have many skilled doctors and nurses here in the Edge who would be willing to share their knowledge with you. Tilney, Lyanna, and Evangeline are the heads of our healing ranks right now.” She paused, hoping this would be welcome news for Ráeru.

Alysanne was always thrilled to find someone interested in the healing ranks and they would always have a special place in her heart. She didn’t intend to completely abandon the practices now that she was queen, after all.

Concern flickered through her green eyes as she continued, addressing the mention of family. There seemed to be far too many family members lost and needing seeking lately! “And we’d happily help you find your family too, if we can. What are their names?” She asked this question not only for her benefit, but for Ru’s as well - hoping that the other mare didn’t mind that she used the terms ‘we’ in reference to them both. With names they would both be able to keep their ears alert for them. Or, if luck was on their side, they might even be familiar to them already!
