arakh and esinakh

The decision has been a long time coming. It's a hard choice for such a young mind to have to make, but after hours of deliberation Arakh knows it is the right one. Telling his mother, though, is going to be far harder.

The Throat has always held an allure for him. It was where his father rose to greatness, where he was born, where he watched the Wildfire crumble to ash. Deep in his heart, he's always thought of it as home. He's always pictured himself ending up there, it was simply a case of finding the right time. After discussing things with Esinakh, it's settled - they are to move.

Somehow, though, he doesn't think Mai is going to be very happy to see her youngest children flying the nest.

She gave up her position as General to look after him and Esinakh, and it feels like ingratitude of the highest order to throw that back in her face by promptly leaving. He loves the Edge, he does, but it just....isn't home. Surely his dam will understand that her offspring must grow up and move on, will understand that they hold far more of a bond with their paternal siblings than they do with their maternal ones. The calf has never even met d'Arcy or Libertad, and his limited impressions of Oizys are far from pleasant. She treats them like vermin, which Arakh thinks is highly out of order since she's not even his blood-sister, just some orphan bastard that Mai took in. So he's been told, anyway.

Of course, their paternal siblings are far from blameless - they utterly ignored Arakh at Gaucho's death, and one of them even attempted to scar him for life by using her magic to move his dead sire's head. No, his first impressions of them aren't the best either, but he has faith that if he lives with them, things will improve. They have to.

It's a chilly winter morning when the colt rises and shakes the gathered snow from his wings. He's growing by the day, strapping and powerfully-built, with a fine rack of bull's horns sprouting savagely from his brow. Surely his dam will understand that he's a growing boy, he needs to be around other colts his own age where he can rough and tumble and play, practice the battle moves he will use when he's older. "Mai?" he says, hunting for his mother. He shuffles forwards and releases a small bleating cry for Esinakh as well, knowing that she will want to be hear to deliver the news. Finally he calls out for Tembovu, the big king of the Edge who he's assuming will want to know that two of his members are leaving.

At the back of her mind, Nyx has always worried that this day would come. She is no stranger to losing children, but usually they just up and leave without a backwards glance - that is more painful than words can describe, but in a way it's better as it's a clean break. The idea of having one of her foals tell her that he is about to leave, knowing she can do nothing about it....the thought makes her ache inside.

Still, that is not necessarily the reason why Arakh is calling her. Her bull-horned son could simply want to talk to her, a boy to his mother. His summoning doesn't have to be bad. But there is something in his voice that makes the mare nervous. His accented tones ring in her ears and the silver diverts her path towards him, breaking into an elegant canter that covers the ground in long, powerful strides.

She's soon in front of him, a warm smile upon her face. He's grown beautifully, tall and strapping like his father. His wings and horns are an interesting mix, as she's never produced a hybrid before, but they suit him. She automatically looks around for Esinakh, as the boy and his sister are rarely separated for long. That bond is something that Nyx loves to see, and she hopes it will sustain for many years into the future. Having produced three sets of twins, the silver is no stranger to the unique bond that exists between them, and it hasn't escaped her notice that they seem to travel together. d'Arcy and Libertad disappeared as one, Arakh and Esinakh have remained as one....only Oizys remains twinless, Enyo gone with the wind.

"What is it, darling?" she questions her son, huffing air gently towards him.

Esinakh isn’t sure about this move, to say the least. And her nervousness manifests as nonstop, intense preening as brother calf calls for mother. Her ears twitch and swivel, as much listening as moving for a release of her nervous energy. Her pale eyes dart between her white feathers (they are gleaming, now; a few are growing thin beneath her attentions) and Rak as he calls out for mother and the King. Though the King emanates a sense of safety (a father figure of sorts in the absence of the Wildfire), he has too many scars marring his skin and making it uneven for her to be entirely comfortable around him.

She finally stops her preening when Mai arrives, her barred face slowly swiveling and ears fluting towards her to hear her words. The filly’s gaze darts at the air huffed towards brother-calf; and though she finds warmth and safety in mother’s scent, the sharing of breath has never been her favorite. So, instead, she quietly bleats a greeting,Mai.” And then her muzzle presses lightly into Arakh’s rump—it was his idea to leave the Edge for the Throat. Though she is not entirely sold on the idea, she will follow him to the ends of the earth (provided they are relatively clean, of course). Despite the sand she knows awaits them, she trusts her newfound flight and the freshwater oasis Rak has told her about to to keep her safe clean.

But her nervousness still shows as she glances around for the King to arrive.

The shouted call was not heard by the King, but rather by his companion. Calf call. Come now, her voice rang clearly and impatiently in his head as it always did. He sighed, slowly shifting from his elephantine form into his regular, equid one. he had been using his tusks to strip some of the bark free from the trees in order for the herd to have some sort of forage throughout the winter.

But such Kingly duties were interrupted by the call, Important, Mbwene interrupted, sending an image of the bull-horned filly’s nervous antics. His mild annoyance left, replaced by concern as he struck up a slow and easy lope towards the borders.

Upon reaching the small clearing in which the twin, bull-horned foals stood, he slowed to a walk, no longer shaking the earth beneath his large, ivory hooves. His eyes studied to foals, ensuring not harm had befallen them, before looking at Nyx. The Captain would forever be his good friend (a friendship he valued, even if fraught with occasional sexual tension), and so grin crossed his muzzle and warmed his navy eyes as he dipped his skull in greeting, “Hello, Nyx.”

He then turned to Arakh and Esinakh. The first was a strapping young colt, assuredly growing into the likeness of the late Wildfire. The latter was…different; forever twitching and moving, never quite settled. But his gaze calmly, expectantly, rested on the grey pair, “You called for your King?” Mbwene, meanwhile, watched with neutral interest—though she was on the lookout for Dominus. She couldn’t wait to show him her Ashen magic.

His mother comes quickly, and the warm, kind expression on her face only makes Arakh's heart break further. For the first time, he questions his decision - is this wise? They're barely weaned, barely old enough to leave her side, and he's thinking about taking them to a different herd where nothing ties them except the bonds of blood?

No. The calf steels his resolve. This is the right thing to do. Their mother will understand. "Hello, Mai," grunts the colt, huffing softly towards his dam. He feels his sister pressing against his rump and turns around to snort lovingly at her, trying to reassure her with his bulk that this is the right thing to do. She has even more misgivings than him, which is completely natural. But this will be better for them.

The earth quakes as the Elephant King approaches, and Arakh looks enviously up at him. Tembovu rivals even the Wildfire for sheer presence, and Arakh's boyish dreams make him crave the day he is large enough to look these mountainous men in the eye. Instead he moves even closer to Esinakh, ready to reassure her should their king's presence upset her. "Zhokwa khal," he greets Tembovu - big king. He looks at the man's small grey companion with wary eyes, not recognising the species. But these observations are just delaying the inevitable. He's called his king here for a purpose, and as the brother, it is his job to remain strong and guide his sister well.

"Arakh and Esinakh want to leave Edge and go to Throat." The words fall out in a jumble, as though saying them quickly will make them hurt Nyx less. "Rak and Esi have lots of brothers and sisters in Throat. Big family. Rak thinks it will be good for Rak and Esi to live with siblings and learn more about Wildfire." Pain flashes momentarily across his eyes as he thinks of his precious fallen father.

He looks to Nyx, pleading with his eyes for her to understand. "Rak not want to leave Mai, but..." His voice drifts off and he presses his face into his mother's leg. Damn, this is even harder than he'd imagined. "Rak and Esi always love Mai. Visit often." He looks hopefully upwards at his dam, then to Tembovu, hoping the king won't prevent their exit.

She looks lovingly down at Esinakh as she bumps into her brother's rear. "Hello, Esi," she croons towards her youngest daughter. Perhaps the two just want some mother-child time with her. Even now she's stepped down from General, she is still a busy woman, and downtime to spend with her twins does not happen often.

Tembovu's arrival makes her doubt this, however. She dips her head respectfully at her king, feeling the usual frisson of excitement at his proximity. In her mind, Dominus gives a hearty growl - he's hunting some unsuspecting lemmings in the snow on the other side of the Edge, so he unfortunately cannot continue his hate-hate saga with Mbwene.

Arakh begins to speak, and Nyx's heart begins to race. Want to leave Edge. "No," she chokes out before she's even had chance to register the words. Her beloved twins, leave? They're barely weaned! Do they care nothing for their mother, to try and abandon her so soon? Selfishly, she'd thought they would stay forever. Her eldest children are gone, Oizys is never affectionate....her twins are her last link to happiness, the last vestiges of her nest. "You are both far too young."

But even as the words leave her lips, she ponders them. Is she being incredibly selfish by preventing them leaving? It's only fair that they want to know their paternal siblings - Oizys certainly isn't a shining example of their maternal ones, given her dismissiveness towards them. How can she stop them entering the world? How can she wrap them in cotton wool purely because she's scared to lose them? She should admire their tenacity and their desire to leave safety for the unknown.

They say childbirth is the hardest thing a woman has to go through. They are wrong - this is.

"I..." She looks to Tembovu, half-hoping that he will prevent them leaving, but knowing that is unlikely. Her half-pegasus children must spread their wings. Arakh presses his bull-horned head into her leg, and Nyx feels droplets budding behind her eyes. "I....will visit you every day," she says, and she buries her face in her son's tufty mane to hide her tears.

The earth trembles at the Elephant King’s approach—and Esi eyes the dirt flecked snow that threatens to climb onto the now-gleaming while sock on her right leg with the vibrations. She snorts softly in relief as the giant stallions slows, her own pale eyes leaving the brownish snow, traveling up, up, up to the expectant navy eyes of their King—well, soon to be their King no longer. Arakh, of course, greets the unnervingly large man with a respectful, but bold, Dothraki tongue—and the grey calf bleats quietly to echo her brother’s sentiments.

—And then a tumult of words fall out of brother calf’s mouth; they are spoken so quickly, more quickly than Esi has ever heard brother-calf speak. Her white-rimmed ear flutes toward him, pale gaze darting towards the strong curve of his jaw, before flashing back to see their dam’s response. At Arakh’s pain and pleading, her own unease grows; small hooves shifting in the snow as her feathers raise and ruffle, nearly vibrating with nervous energy.

At Mai’s immediate denial of brother’s request, her teeth begin to grind and work against each other quickly, breaths growing shallow at the conflict that suddenly face the pair of bull-horned weanlings… But then something changes—Mai looks towards Zhokwa khal, her face clouded and softened in emotions that are at once too complex and all too simple for the little filly’s strange mind to understand.

And then, “I… will visit you every day,” and again Arakh’s broad shoulder holds the tears of his family. Slowly, hesitantly, the strangling filly shuffles forward—though she cannot change it, she understands that her dam’s relationship with her had been a trying one. She was not an easily handled or understood foal.

But, still, moved by the quiet pain her mother’s voice, her tiny hooves crunch in the snow; the slender snip of her smooth muzzle (free of whiskers, she had pulled those out) reaches out to gently touch Nyx’s grey cheek. “Miss you,” was her soft, quiet bleat as her pale, luminous grey eyes south the electric blues of her dam’s.

The Elephant King’s brows rise, horn dipping slightly at the respectful words the young calf showed him. Though he did not entirely understand their meaning, there was an undercurrent of dignity in any monarchial greeting in all languages. So his navy eyes warmed slightly—until they creased at the request that left Arakh’s weanling mouth. Before the Elephant could say anything, however, Nyx’s choked denial silences any questions or refusals of his own.

His dark navy eyes cooled as they creased, meeting his old friend’s pleading, pained gaze before it grows overbright and is lost to the shoulder of her precocious son. A deep breath expanded his barrel before leaving his nostrils as a slow sigh—he understood the want need to keep one’s children close at hoof better than most other monarchs would. But he also understood the pull of family bonds Arakh would feel at the loss of the Wildfire. Sadly, conflicted, he watched the mare and her children share a painful, quiet moment, thoughts swirling in his mind.

“It would be a lie to say that the Edge does not need you, Nyx. But—” his deep rumble paused, saddened gaze looking between Nyx and her children, “I would understand if you wish to follow your children to the Throat.” Despite the offering of his words, however, in his gaze is absolute refusal—a pleading of her not to leave him in the Edge. There is too much upheaval, and (despite her outburst at the last meeting), the King knows that Nyx is one he can count on. A friend, ally, and supporter.

So his heavy head swings towards the two calves, “If your mother does stay, I would expect you to visit her as often as she does you. Though you go to follow the bonds of blood, know that you leave blood and family behind, as well.” And, with a final slight dip of his horn, he begins to melt back into the mists, “Safe travels, young ones.”

Mbwene, bright blue eyes gleaming with sad understanding, waited to see what Nyx would choose. Though she held no love for the Captain's companion, she did like the electrified, grey woman. So she watched, her actions the physical manifestation of Tembovu's emotions.

No. His mother's initial staunch refusal makes the colt's ears flop nervously to either side, and he gazes beseechingly at the grey mare. "Mai...." She states they're far too young, and Arakh racks his brain for a counter-argument. Yes, they are young, but that shouldn't prove an obstacle. They'll be looked after, and they'll have each other to lean on.

After what seems like an intense mental battle, his dam relents, and the calf's body sags with relief. She says she will visit them every day, and the colt nods intently, nestling closer into his mother's familiar grey fur. "We visit Mai too." How could they not? Their mother has single-handedly raised them, so completely abandoning her would just be wrong.

He looks to Tembovu as the large man speaks. Arakh begins to fret; what if they get their mother's permission only to be stymied by their king? Thankfully, Tembovu does not dismiss their question, and the colt sagely nods his head in thanks. The king also offers Nyx to go with them - Arakh's eyes widen and he looks hopefully at his dam, thinking how amazing it would be if she came with them as well. He knows it is unlikely, however; the silver mare is bound to the Edge, it is her home and always has been.

Tembovu addresses them directly then, and the colt nods a sombre nod. "Rak and Esi visit often. Love Mai - not want to leave her." As the large man disappears into the Edge, Arakh watches his retreating form with interest before turning to Esi with excitement in his gaze. It's almost time to make the biggest move of their young lives!

Miss you. Her daugher's soft words cause Nyx's eyes to suddenly sting with tears, and she leans down to whicker gently towards Esinakh's patterned muzzle. Her twins may well miss her, but they will not know the primal mourning of a mother with an empty nest, a woman lost and useless. She wouldn't want them to know that. They will be happy, she's sure, but the same cannot be said for Nyx.

Tembovu's offer startles the mare, and she looks up from her daughter in order to focus on the elephantine man. It's so kind, so thoughtful....a warmth grows in her heart for the stallion, for his selflessness in allowing one of his most loyal herdmembers to leave to be with her children. But the Edge is Nyx's home and always will be, and she simply could not imagine living anywhere else. "You are kind to offer me that, Tembovu, but I could not leave the Edge. Somebody has to keep an eye on Oizys." She forces a chuckle. Truthfully, she thinks a part of Arakh and Esinakh's decision is because they want to make their own way, and they couldn't do that with their overprotective mother following them like a bad smell.

She cannot prolong it any longer. As Tembovu takes his leave, Nyx plants a gentle kiss onto the heads of both her offspring, feeling a single tear trickle down her cheek. "Be safe, my darlings." murmurs, and her mind is a minefield of sorrow as she looks upon them. "I will see you very soon." She blows soft air towards them, before stepping back to watch them go.
