His nose twitched around the scab that the male griffin had left him—it had been scratched as his trunk, but the wound was now a large scab across the black markings of his nasal bone. A breath pushed out his nostrils as he looked to Kiada—he had seen her wounds be healed quickly and fully to ensure minimal scarring; though it wasn’t entirely effective. He sighed softly; the griffin’s talons and claws had been sharp and deadly. Though (luckily) not on that day.

The thought of coming to the Veins had swirled in the back of his mind for a long while—ever since he had learned to control his shifting into the elephantine form. It had been further ushered to the forefront of his mind during his battle with Isopia; though he was large, if he was a full-sized elephant, then he could have been a better match for her dragoness form.

The attack on the foals had cemented the idea in the King’s mind, however. The male and female griffins had been as large as he—were he larger he would have been able to better protect the foals. Better protect his children.

So he allowed himself to go to the Veins and request an audience with the gods. He allowed himself to seek this bit of power. He knew, from his time in Dorobo, that power was an intoxicating and dangerous thing. He had even felt the allure of absolute tyranny during the messy meeting of Alysanne’s appointment. How easy it would have been to silence all the nay-sayers… But no. That was not what the Elephant King wanted. That was all he stood against.

Knowing this (telling this) to himself, he took his children to the Veins of the Gods to beseech the deities for further power. But not for himself, for others. To protect.

“Gods?” Though his deep voice boomed with the strength of a father and King, it still held the uncertainty of a mortal standing on the precipice of the deity’s dominion. His navy gaze flicked back to his gilded children before sweeping forward to the crumbling shrines, “I seek magic to better protect those I serve.”

Mbwene, ever trundling behind her bonded, kept a close eye on the wily Keusi and incorrigible Khairi. The hyena and vulture were absolute trouble, she was sure of it.

Kiada & Kianzo
The dark prince walked quietly behind his father, steps an eerie match to his sister’s alongside him. Intermittently he would ask questions of his sire—it was still strange to have the Elephant so present in their lives. But there he was, big and warm and looming and ever-present. Almost annoying so… definitely annoyingly so.

But, despite the annoyance, the dark colt found something else in his father’s presence. He had done his best to ignore and suppress it since meeting him in their cave in the Basin. However, ever since the attack of the griffins and his father’s valiant (even scary, the colt was loathe to admit) attacks against the griffins.

Keusi trotted behind the pair of twins, occasionally sneakily snapping at, occasionally amiably yipping to Kiada’s companion. Khairi was one of the few creatures the hyena could stand to be around for long periods of time. The elephant Mbwene, however… a low growl rumbled in her throat—

Though it was cut off by the crumbling shrines and bold, black rock which greeting both her and her bonded’s matching, sharp blue gazes. The colt’s brows raised, eyes scouring every inch to see and understand the power (and potential for power) that laced the earth, here. Keusi yipped in anxious excitment, feeling the yearning for the power flowing strongly from Kianzo.

“Where are they?” was his low murmur as his shoulder sought to lean against Kiada’s as they waited.

Kianzo & Kiada
She trailed after her father, alongside Kianzo as they ventured out toward the Veins. While Kianzo asked the Elephant King questions periodically, Kiada chose to stay quiet while they walked. Ever since the foal games, she’d felt a bit different. Anger seeped deep within her bones at her helplessness during it, and she carried the bruised skin, scratches, and the beginning of scars to prove it. Despite the fact that Khairi had acted quick in that instance, with the herbs to begin clotting, and how her father had gotten a healer to her quickly, she knew that there would be scars. They wouldn’t be as bad as they could have been, but they were there nonetheless.

And despite the fact her brother walked along beside her, eerily in step with her, she felt slow. Her chest was sore and slightly painful to the touch from where the griffin had pressed its massive paw to try and bite into her. It was an event that continued to mull in her mind over and over every day. The filly had hoped that perhaps the prospect of meeting a god would dull some of the pain, but so far the pain seemed more emotional than physical.

Khairi remained on Kiada’s rump while Keusi snipped at him along her heels. Kiada paid no mind to the hyena, but Khairi was having a blast. While she danced about, Khairi squawked and cooed to the canine out of fun, before hopping off Kiada’s back and swooping over Keusi. It was all a game to the bird, a game of fun and survival all the same. Where Kiada and Kianzo completed each other, Khairi and Keusi had their own unique way of completing their own puzzle. And while Mbwene had accompanied them, she had no room in this delicate dance. His blood red gaze swooped over to her occasionally to observe as they arrived.

When Tembovu’s voice rang out before the crumbling shrines, Kiada almost flinched at the sound. It reminded her of his panic, of his anger when the griffins had descended on the foals that day. Still, she remained quiet until she felt the gentle touch of her brother as he leaned into her. She leaned back into him, craning her inky head to her brother’s soft golden fur and closed her eyes momentarily. “Maybe they’ll send the serval again.” She mused, half joking to her brother before lifting her head to look upon the shrines, eyes glancing occasionally to her father to see if he’d hear her words.

The earth around the trio of horses began to rumble slightly. Though it was a controlled rumble, with none of the characteristic markings of an earthquake. Though the Earth God's arrivals were similiar to minor natural disasters, he was never one to try and intimidate or worry those who came to see him. Though some of his siblings would undoubtably appear in the shale-ruined aftermath of a rock slide or land-quake, the God did not. Although he did part the earth to make way for his bulk, it more resembled a birth, than any sort of destruction.

Slowly the rocks of the small island parted, yielding the massive body of the God, who was perhaps the only creature in all of Helovia who could make Tembovu appear small (or at least normal-sized) in comparison.

The deity's emerald eyes sparkled gently as he shook his horned skull to rid himself of lingering bits of rock and dirt that clung to his rustic body.  "No serval today I'm afraid." The God rumbled with a wink towards the growing set of twins. With a final stretch of his wings, the God of the Earth turned his kindly gaze towards Tembovu, something like curiosity alight in his eyes. He had the power--as did all of his siblings--to read minds, and yet rarely did he exercise that ability. He always preferred conversations when he could have them.

"Hello King." He offered, the smile in his eyes and upon his face clearly heard in his voice as well. "If protection of those whom you serve is your goal, why have you not sought out my sister, and the patron of your lands?" His sister could, he well knew, be rather difficult. But with a reign as long and prosperous as Tembovu's had been thus far, he assumed he was on good terms with the Moon Goddess. Or at least, amicable-enough ones.

The Earth God appeared in an (appropriate) trembling of earth and parting of rock. The Elephant King, though not innately fearful of the gods, did take a step towards his children; one thick forelimb outstretched in front of the golden twins, ready to shield them with his body if need be.

But the Elephant needn’t have worried, for the Earth appeared with gentle eyes and wink towards Kiada. The Elephant grinned slightly, feeling the calming presence of the Earth God permeate his thick hide and hold at bay so many of the worries and concerns that had driven him to the Veins in the first place.

The King dipped his great, heavy skull head deeply in greeting of the deity, though his head rose swiftly as the god asked him why he sought out the Earth rather than the Moon. A slight frown creased his brow, realizing that while he hadn’t sought a particular god in particular, he hadn’t called explicitly for the Moon Goddess. Who, despite being complex to deal with at times, had treated him and her patron herd well thus far. More than well. Extraordinarily, really (and, perhaps that was a cause for concern with the tricky goddess).

He shook his head slightly, deep voice rumbling in answer, “Because I seek power for myself, not my herd.” The words were bold, but there was no hiding the guilty undertone to them—after such abuses of power in the Plains, it seemed wrong to seek power for himself.

“I wish for my elephant form to be larger, more powerful—better able to protect those I love,” he paused, navy eyes looking up (a novel thing for the King) to the gargantuan god, “Perhaps even larger than you,” his voice ended on an amused chuckle and jest, a lopsided smile curling up the corner of his muzzle.

Mbwene, meanwhile, had been working up the courage to shuffle forward and inspect the god. She was daunted by the deity, it was true. But, finally, she shuffled forward on round feet, trunk outstretched towards the god’s wings with a hesitant toot of hello.
Mbwene speaks.

Although the God would have been pleased to spend his time with Tembovu's children, the King was here for a reason, and quickly the conversation turned business-like. The Earth did appreciate this however, for it showed a certain amount of respect from the King, that he would not delay the Earth's schedule.

"Surely your own magic benefits your herd, Tembovu." The Earth mused, though dipped his head in a carry on, carry on, fashion, to indicate that his interruption did not warrant a reply.

As the King mentioned being even larger than the God, the Earth had to laugh. What was it about physical size that the mortals so easily associated with power? He was the largest of his siblings, yes, but his sister and his brother-Spark were forces to be reckoned with, and yet did not even come up to Tembovu's shoulder. Ahh well.
"Size is not all it is cracked up to be. It had its benefits, yes, but is fraught with weaknesses." Again the God shrugged, his words rhetorical for the second time.

"Bring me hearth moss, a fire-cracker plant, and some spark weed - though I'd use caution when gathering that last one. Then..." The God paused, his gaze sparkling almost mischievously. "Pick-pocket someone." A smile appeared on the God's' face. "You'll give the stolen goods back of course...but...give it a try..." Slyly, the God continued grinning.

You must bring the god some Hearth Moss, a fire-cracker plant, and spark weed! I wonder where to find these things? Then you have to try and pick-pocket someone! (When Tembovu attempts this, he'll be transformed into a full-sized African Elephant, making it harder to be stealthy.)

The Elephant King could not help but grin and relax in the presence of the Earth God. Inwardly he marveled at the difference between the Earth and his sister, the Moon. There was some small part of him that had assumed he would find the Earth easier to be around as compared to the other gods. And, though he had spent singular time only with the Moon, he found that that small part of him was right…. and wrong.

The Earth was easy to be around. There were no double entendres, no smoky smiles or ominous looks… However (perhaps because he had spent so long in the Moon’s lands), he found that he had grown so accustomed to being on his toes around his goddess that he had grown to rather like to.

Although, there was much to be said for the deep, easy breaths he was able to breath around the Earth, despite the sly grin he was giving the Elephant King. Had the Moon offered him such a grin, the King would have likely been second-guessing his request.

But, with the Earth, the Elephant simple grinned ruefully and replied, “Thank you, Bambo Earth.” And, with a slightly herding motion of his great head, he began to walk away from the Veins, thinking on his tasks (and slightly puzzled as to why the Earth required such plants).
