"Wake up!"

The first few nights of Birdsong always seem so deep and vast, don't they? Now that your bones can sink into sleep within the frigid winds of winter working their way into your bones. The night is blue and endless and uninterrupted by -

"-wake up!"

Before the blue mare, a portal of dull electric light suddenly appears. It is the sort of portal that you instantly know will transport you to another place - another time even. It is just Ampere's size, and something in the warm flicker of the hazy blue light promises that no harm shall befall you, should you enter. It appears on the bloody sands of the Dragon's Throat, but through the portal, should you look, you would see the cragged mountain top of the Heavenly Fields, almost close enough to touch.

"Come!" The voice is nondescript, androgynous, but kind. Though there is a murmer of impatience, the portal shows no sign of decay, though intuitively you know it won't last forever. "There is much for you to see, and it is best viewed when the sun is still down." The voice continues encouragingly.

A M P E R E

Her sleep does not come as freely as it once did. Maybe she doesn't exhaust herself enough during the day any more, too liable to drift and mope than scour the realm on patrols or twist herself amid the throes of a fight. Maybe it's just the absence she feels, a weight that unsettles her in wake or sleep, a chill which doesn't escape on the vanishing tail of winter. Maybe it's just part of getting old.

So you can see why the little voice that beckons her to wake is able to do so, and yet how she feels, for not at least, that she's still snared among her dreams. The portal that yawns in front of her is so surreal, promising so much she doesn't want, yet is interested in having. The risk of tumbling into its rabbit hole seems greater than anything else, and yet a quiet part of her whispers to do it, because fuck this existence now. If it was demise on the other end, would that truly be so bad? Worth the adventure at the very least, wasn't it?

Plus, you can't die in your dreams, so why not.

She rouses and she rises with no ceremony, left standing on a precipice of hesitation before the humming portal. It seems intent, bidding her to enter, urgent in a way that does not hurry her. Her head juts out suddenly, intent to touch, wondering if it smells, and if it's safe. It seems to be, but she can't figure out why, because more than anything it seems like it should not be. A parrot squawks in the distance, a warning. Her ears flick at the sound but her focus is seized and her mind is made. Ampere steps into it, emerging in the Fields as the voice leads her.

The Heavenly Fields, well known to the blue, are painted in an unfamiliar colour scheme. Night spreads its vast cape overhead, dotting the sky with stars and swirls of light, but yet the fields are dark.

Except ... they aren't.

The Fields are bathed in swatches of blues and greens, as if the normally prismatic colour-scheme has been inverted. Through each flower, blade of grass, tree-trunk and stole of flowers, there is a pulsing thread of white light. Ampere, who has the power to manipulate the electrical life-force within the living should recognize the string of light for what it is.

"Thank you for coming." The voice says, and as it does so, the light within everything pulses gently as if echoing the sentiment of the disembodied voice.

"It's beautiful, is it not?" A thoughtful pause, and then, as if Ampere was perhaps too stupid, or merely too mortal to know what it was referring to, the voice added: "Life."

A hush blew across the fields and yet the rhythmic pulsing of the life all around them seemed to create an in-audible chant that wafted through the air.

"Tell me Ampere, what do you see here?"

A M P E R E

She stands in the field, still and rigid with expectation. Her eyes are shut so tight they wrinkle the corners of her face, and even her nostrils and her lips are taut. Her body is coiled like a snake, defensive and ready for whatever demise she has willingly waltzed into. Yet it doesn't come, and all that meets her is an eerie thank you. Slowly Ampere peeks out of one eye, then the other, her tension slipping away with each blink.

She can do little more than stare at the scene before her. It's familiar, but entirely not, and she's reminded once more that she may still in fact be dreaming. Ampere has endured many mystical and magical occurrences though, so much as she is wont to believe this isn't real, the sliver of sanity inside of her urges her to do so. It's as beautiful as it is strange. It invites her in, teases at her curiosity and wonder, and so steadily the mare begins to step forward into the fields. She remains cautious; slow and gathered beneath herself so she can be more capable of retaliating. Eventually she grows brave and stretches her neck down to better inspect the glowing foliage, her muzzle just brushing the top of one leaf, jerking back with an assumption of pain.

The voice is still speaking among it all. Ampere's ears flick, showing she's still listening, though perhaps she's not paying attention. Maybe she should.

As a question hangs in the air Ampere's head lifts from her studying, and she lets her gaze pour across the horizon, as if trying to glean some knowledge from the vastness that may differ from the single leaf that extends beside her. Her breath draws in, ready, but she holds it, wondering if she's right - wondering if there's even a wrong. More than anything, she wonders what the purpose is, but she doesn't say that yet.

"Energy," she finally confesses. "And it is beautiful," she admits, shuffling her wings comfortably against her back.

At least for the voice, the silence is a companionable one.

"I think so too." It agrees, and as it does so, a form begins to appear. It is like a bastardized creature, half canine-half feline. Sparks of energy writhe and blossom through it, making the lines of its body actually rather difficult to see. The life-force within the creature is quite clear, and although it is small - smaller than Ampere - it seems to fill the small space that they stand within, with light. On the toothy-face of the creature, a smile appeared. Ears, not quite triangular and not quite round sprout from the top of its head, and eyes that bear slitted-pupils tilt upwards as the creature's smile widens.

"Not many can see it." The creature admits, coming to stand casually by Ampere. Closer now, perhaps it looks nothing like any sort of feline or canine you might see. It's body is shaggy but solid and although there is a thick mane of fur all around its face, it does not seem particularly well suited for colder climates. A leonine tail stretches out behind it, flicking slightly.

As it speaks again, you might realize that is a she.

"Even you, who have the power to manipulate these threads of energy sometimes forget. Forget that there is a world pulsing with life. " The she-creature shrugged as if to suggest that this was understandable. Then, she turned to regard Ampere seriously, and politely. "What is it you want, Ampere? Why do you keep waking up, day after day?"

The being that summoned her here takes shape as its agreement rings forth. Ampere's attention is immediately drawn to it. Despite its strangeness she doesn't react in any careful way, though neither is she emboldened. She's familiar, perhaps because it isn't so strange after all, not really. It's like her magic, a lightning beast born of the energy that thrives in the world. It's certainly brighter though, denser like something real instead of just the electric shadow, and far more sentient than the mindless hoards she creates to dash against her foes.

As it smiles, she returns the motion, melting away the wrinkles on her features with laugh lines instead.

The caeline seems equally at ease as it settles near her. Ampere's eyes don't leave it, though there is no concern within them, merely wonder. The Mother of Companions wonders if this is a soul. Not just the energy of something, but the manifestation of who someone is. On that train of thought then, noting the mishmash of animal qualities which lack her kind, Ampere then begins to believe this is perhaps the soul of companions. Maybe the first, maybe the collective (although it ought to look a fair bit uglier then, she muses), or perhaps just a lost one of little importance except that it's here, speaking to her.

Ampere is not left long to wonder as it, she, continues to inquire. It's enrapturing, enough so that Ampere's misery which she's been cradling in her chest for seasons seems to drift away - sunken into her bones perhaps, because it certainly isn't gone, but it's distant. Ampere stands beyond it, like a prisoner out of her cell but still in the prison, oblivious to the metal rails as a brief ray of sunlight drifts through a sun roof onto her face, inviting her to dream again.

That's what this being is doing, her questions so perfectly formed that Ampere is pulled from her depths, but not so far that she feels the absence of them and warily falls back in. She is a light, but dim enough to behold.
Ampere sighs, and it's like a new breath.

It's a recognition of her forgetfulness. It's an admittance of uncertainty for her desire.
What do I want?
She has always reached and taken it, but this feels like the first time she's been asked, and it leaves her oddly without an answer. She finds herself tentatively seeking Kygo's presence, scaling the walls of her consciousness to find that familiarity she pretends is still uncomfortable. He isn't here though, and that absence is sobering for several reasons.

Ampere blinks, and glances away from the creature. She's letting the vision of the electric pulse of life flood her senses.

"To fight."
The answer comes at last. It's a hard response, unwavering and thick with resolve that she hasn't been able to muster for months. "To fight for the vulnerable, for the weak, for the defenseless," her voice thickens with a forgotten passion as she brings her attention back around to her friend. "To fight for what is right, or should be. To preserve this." Her wings unfurl, gesturing at the surroundings, at the minuscule existence that hums with as much fervor as a the largest beast roars.

For @Ampere.

The creature nods, as if having expected this answer all along. Its slitted feline eyes turned upwards at the sides appearing almost comically elvish, as a smile parted its lips revealing its rows of teeth once again. "And so you shall." She said slyly, almost prophetically. Her core pulsed brightly, and the air around them seemed to take on a feeling of raw, blue-white electricity.

Softly, the creature hummed to herself and moved away from Ampere slightly. Though her mind could not easily comprehend what it was like to be forgetful or shortsighted, she did recognize that this was the case in most mortals. With a sigh that caused the electrical currents running through the fauna around her to pulse brightly, she turned back. "It is so easy to forget what we want, and why we are here..." She mused, almost more to herself than to Ampere. Her gaze solidified for a moment, becoming a beacon of white light, before dying down to the blue-white pulse that it was before.

"Perhaps this will help you remember, and keep you on your path." Her eyes narrowed and seemed to grow deeper. Light and electricity extended from her body towards Ampere, and suddenly the mare was filled and composed of the same electrical currents as the being was. The creature smiled to herself, as if seeing Ampere for the first time. "You won't always be this way of course...and so maybe.." Its slightly-whiskered face frowned for a moment as she thought. Then, looking down, she blew onto a flower. It changed suddenly in a flaming feather, which caused a smile to spread across the beings face. "You have served the Sun God diligently for years now Ampere. He keeps you in his mindseye, and now you shall keep a piece of him as well." The feather flowed towards Ampere, and although it appeared to be on fire, it tucked itself harmless in her mane with the others. It pulsed with a warm light but offered no heat.

Congratulations! Ampere has received

The faith of her new friend is... relieving. For so long Ampere hasn't had faith in much, that to be believed in, for her mission to be believed in, is a renewal of hope she'd buried and lost long ago. If she bothered to dwell on it long enough,s he might have realized she let the duties of a herd and the attraction to the fire that lead it to be a distraction from her ultimate goal, one that was becoming more than difficult as she faced the wrath of the Earth and built more enemies than allies at every turn.

Now she had a family behind her though, had forged alliance to the Sun, and proven her fortitude to her herd. Surely if she took up her arms once more, she'd have some support now?
The stone which was faintly warm and shaped in an eye at the edge of the herd land popped into her mind...

Ampere was pulled from her reverie by the caeline's speech, and she nodded in agreement, glad that she did not seem to be alone in this lapse of remembrance. Her attention piqued as her friend suggested and offering to help her. By the Sun's light, she could use all the help she could get these days. So Ampere watched, expecting a guide of some kind, a bauble of some importance perhaps.

Light burst forth then, and Ampere blinked rapidly against the brightness, though she never fully turned away. She watched, waiting for it to lead her, waiting for it to show her the path she ought to walk. Except... it went towards her, into her, she realized after she spun around and couldn't find it.

Ampere gasped, her feathers fluffing up as the electric glow raced along her form and emanated from her being. All this time she'd been seeking a light to guide her, never once considering it rested within her. Always she'd turned to the sun or the moon, chasing their glow, deeming ti stronger than her brief, passionate pulses of lightning bolts amid the storm, but she should have placed more trust in herself.

Her eyes closed, relieved, as she exhaled steadily, each breath strengthening her. The iron bars were crumbling around her.
Her lashes curled as her blue stare poked out, refreshed, and eyed the other offer her friend provided. A constant memento, she seemed to suggest, and Ampere at once knew the source of the item. As insignificant as it appeared, its weight was heavy on Ampere's heart, a joyful quip easing from her lungs as her magic tenderly took it and tied it into her mane.

Acceptance, from outside and within. Ampere felt whole again.

"Thank you..."

For @Ampere.

"Remember," the creature half purred, half sang, "remember what you have said to me. And ... and remember who you are. What you are." She gestures to the light pulsing through everything and the tenuous threads that ultimately hold it all together; the lifeforce that binds everything to everything else. "Do not forget that for some, you are their light. Just as you draw strength from the Sun, the Moon, and those you love, there are those who love you who follow your light. I hope these gifts will help you see that better."

Her smile widens, but it also appears slightly sad.

"I am sorry that he could not be hear." She murmurs, smile fading away into a lopsided line. He? She doesn't move to clarify. He who? The God of the Sun? Gaucho? Mesec? All three?

Did it even matter?

"You have come close to losing yourself." She continued, her voice tinged with a concerned warning now. "Be your own light, to guide yourself home." Her electric gaze rises to find the blue depths of Ampere's own. There is no judgement on her ethereal, crackling features. Only a love deep as the sea, and with the resolve of the mountains.

Her smile appears again. "You may stay with your sight as it is here, for as long as you like. When the sun rises, all shall be as it was. Or, if you have seen enough, you may return home through the portal." A faint fizz, like the release of carbonation, erupted from behind Ampere. An identical portal to the one she came through, only this one showed the sands of the Dragon's Throat beyond, had appeared.

Her ears flicked forward to better hear the wisdom that her newfound friend was offering. There was truth to all of it, difficult as it was for Ampere to admit that she had forgotten, that she had grown so dark that the storm had consumed her and her spark. Her children, a last remnant to the man she loved, had been swept into the black hole of her despair, all light winking out until nothing but murk and sorrow remained. Zekle had left, Grusha had vanished, Tae was trying to heal, and Iskra... little Iskra was alone.

"I'm sorry that he could not be here."

Ampere drew in a shaky breath, her body a taut bow line quivering as it stood, prepared. She was waiting for the cold maw of the sea to consume her, for the massive wave of grief to sweep her away and drown her again. She was standing taller now though, further up the shore where the waves weren't so rough. So the tide came, but it splashed with white foam and seashell dust around her hooves, receding with little more than a deeper trench in the sand where she had taken root.
Ampere exhaled.

"Me too," Ampere lamented, surprised it was above a whisper and strong. Like the creature, Ampere did not elaborate on who he was, though her mind did drift over each of those prominent male figures. The beach had done something to all of them though. Buried one with cold and wet, set another one so far up the shore she couldn't find him, and the other had always been shining down, even behind the storm clouds - with her even if she could not feel it. So, it was okay that he wasn't here, she was standing all the same.

Her head bobbed, nodding at the continued advice from the caeline. Ampere proffered the cat-dog a weak smile, before lifting her gaze back to the expanse before her. "If it's all the same to you, I think I'll stay," Ampere murmured, kneeling down and curling her legs beneath her to lay comfortably in the glowing meadow. She missed Kygo, but she was certain she'd miss this opportunity more if she left it.

So Ampere intended to sleep here, drawing what last vestibules of strength she could from this meeting, willing it to imprint strongly on her mind and resonate among all her memories with the same vibrancy that decorated the blades of grass.

Slowly, she began to sing. An old tune, of comfort, that her mother use to whistle in the evening light when she was a girl. A melody her kids might recognize from their youth, but one Iskra had never heard.
