A large colt with tusks asks if the spiders can heat the bronze; before Volterra can oblige and use his limited control over the creatures to send them towards the bronze, all hell breaks loose. Out of the corner of his eye he notices his son suddenly shift into a blue jay, and this display of magic would ordinarily have the man's whole attention; as it is, his focus is very much on the swarm of ants that have decided to attack their assailants, and the cowardly spiders who have upped and left them to it.

He glowers at the arachnids, before his own legs are suddenly lost beneath a moving throng of ants. They climb high and bite through his flesh, causing the stallion to roar and stomp his forehooves with the force of a wrecking ball. Tiny little pinpricks delve through his skin, a canvas of different pains that irritates the leviathan beyond belief. Astarot's bird-voice reaches his ears and his eyes widen at the idea; yes, the ants hadn't liked the heat, so it may work!

It takes every ounce of the beast's concentration as he summons his magic again. He has created large creatures before, but never this many small ones, and the toll on his strength is instantaneous as the ground nearby erupts with about a dozen small fire-spider golems. He instructs a couple of them to scuttle towards him so he can reach down and grab them, then swing them unceremoniously around to try and burn the ants off him.

Although Volterra is not an altruistic man by nature, it seems rather rude to not offer his golems' services to others. So he uses his mind to force the fire-spiders towards every other person that has ants upon them, their stone legs clicking and their rocky pincers flapping menacingly as they advance on the copious amounts of ants. Hopefully their heat will cause them to move from their horse targets or at the very least cease their biting in their haste to flee, whilst also offering the option for the others in the clearing to use them as weapons as Volterra is.

Meanwhile, the spider that Astarot is trying to entice goes willingly towards him, allowing itself to be flung towards the anthill in a shower of stone and flame.

I NEVER FEAR DEATH OR DYING, I ONLY FEAR NEVER TRYING
I AM WHATEVER I AM, ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE ME NOW

Volterra creates more fire-spiders and sends them towards all of the people being attacked to try and scare off the ants with the heat. The one that Astarot tries to fling lets him do so.

i want to be wild, beautiful and free

There are so many damn ants. She knows there was obviously going to be a lot. It’s an ant hill being stalked by five very large and hungry spiders. Of course there are a lot of ants. But there are so many. It doesn’t take long for them to swarm out of the ant hill. The spiders flee into the trees, and truthfully, she can’t blame them. She really, really wishes she could flee into the trees too. Not that she didn’t expect to get a few bites, but not this.

Most seem to swarm after only a handful of the horses. She notes that somehow Dragomir seems to be left entirely alone, and she’s rather displeased to find that she is not entirely left alone. The battalion of ants that comes her way divides though, many going after the already dead ants. She stomps a handful more in different places, hoping that the army will continue to divide itself among its’ fallen comrades.

There’s more than she can crush though, and they start crawling up her legs and biting. She is endlessly thankful for the scales that run up the lower part of her legs, making it harder for the ants to do much damage. Still, they pinch and prick and there’s enough of them that she can’t just stand there. No, she needs to get the dead ant smell of herself, because certainly she must have some of the dead ant smell clinging to her.

So she runs. Sort of. Syrena doesn’t run well, particularly not in a forest, but she beelines as best she can to the closest stream she can find. She stomps ants on the way, moving in a zigzag to keep luring the ant army into various locations that were not her. Soon, she plunges into the little stream, wishing desperately she were near the ocean or even a river. Any salt water, truthfully, because the smell of the salt would likely be the best thing to keep the ants away.

But she’ll take what she can get. She sinks into the water as best she can, splashing around in an attempt to wash the ants from her legs and get rid of any lingering smell. For good measure, she splashes as much water onto the shore as she can, trying to obscure any scent trail and kill any lingering ants in a sudden mud slide. Hopefully she’d left enough dead ants in the spiderwebs and the trail behind her that the spiders would get dinner. Because otherwise she’s got herself some bitten to hell legs for no good reason.

[Summary: Kills some more ants to try and split the army even more, and then runs into a stream to try and wash the ants away.]

Ughhh no. Yael can handle sand. Sand is ok, even when it gets into all her feathers and hair, burying itself into her skin and up her nose. Sand is not alive. Ants? Ants are not ok. It doesn’t matter that they’re only reacting to the threat of multiple creatures five thousand times their size! And of course, their taskmasters flee, leaving the foolish, greedy horses to clean up the mess and deal with the repercussions. Typical. Gods, magical spiders, turkeys - it all lands squarely on the shoulders of the mere mortals to figure it out and make it happen.

Imagine if none of these gracious, giving horses had shown up? Then where would these hungry spiders be?!

Out spill a multitude of ants, so much so that the ground almost seems to be moving of its own free will. Some come Yael’s way, and after the first few stinging bites, the golden woman raises up on her hind legs to give the little buggers fewer points of entry. She does this repeatedly, while using her large wings to try and sweep them off her body. Those who are attacked the most (including the children, poor dears) seek refuge in the water, and she doesn’t blame them. What she can do is make sure the ants can’t get to her is keep moving. Out of the corner of her eye, she notices Toulouse and Alysanne being swarmed, and moves towards them. Her pain must be considerably less than their own. “Tooloose! Run against my wings, t’at vill brush t’em off! Aleesan? Are you ok?”

She extends her wings out on either sides, inviting them to try her suggestion. But if they had a better solution, that would be ok with her too.

The problem with ants was that there were just so many of them. They swarmed Alysanne and the black and white mare snorted in distress, shaking her head but resisting the urge to use her cheek to wipe off the swarms crawling up her legs so that she wouldn’t accidentally transfer any to her face and make things worse. She danced on the spot, unfurling her wings and doing what she could to use her wings to wipe her legs. One of the fire golems skittered towards her and seemed to discourage more ants but that still left the swarm of them that were covering her, biting at her skin and driving her insane.

Her green eyes catch the movement of the children and some of the others going towards the water to wash and drown off the little beasts and she does not miss that the spiders have conveniently disappeared and are of no help at all.

Just as she was going to move towards Maude and the others in the water, her name in a foreign voice caught her attention and she turned to see the golden pegasus from the Edge, registering a moment later that @Yael had suggested @Toulouse brush up against her wings to get the ants off.  “I’ve been better, but that’s a good idea!” Instead of moving towards the water, Alysanne approached Yael - stretching out her wings so that she could help brush the ants off of the golden mare and the specter, if he would approach. With another set of wings, surely it would be all the more effective!

Hemlock focused his attentions on Aly - using his wings and his small talons to wipe and scrape off the ants, knowing that Aly wouldn’t mind a few small cuts from his talons in compared to hundreds of ant bites.

Patrick's blue eyes remain fixed on the spider he'd chosen to address and so, with his rump pointed towards the colony entrance, the boy does not see the swarm of ants coming for the gathered horses. He hears the reaction from those closest though...

Still he does not turn. With a snort and stomp his level gaze turns to a glare as the eight-legged beggars retreat up the tree. He squeals at them indignantly after them.

"Many bugs in tree-place. Find easier eats, stupid sticky-feet!"

Now the swarm has found him too, though it has diminished the further it ranges from the hill. At first he simply twitch, swinging his too-short tail about uselessly. As the bites grow more frequent he becomes agitated and finally drops to roll on his back thrashing his legs about at random. Clearly he no longer cares what pieces of the ant traps he might be knocking asunder or what insects he kills.

This counter attack only accomplishes so much, for while he has indeed crushed whatever was crawling up his sides and along his spine it does not help his belly. He returns to his hooves just as a young, skull-marked stallion approaches him (@Astarot). Even in his distraction he manages a grunt of surprise when the older male address him by name. Now is no time for questions though, a simple nod of agreement is all he gives.

The stranger offers a few helpful swishes of his much larger tail before becoming distracted with helping others in the group. There are still ants biting at parts of Pat's tender underside though. Glancing around he sees some children headed for not-so-very near water, as the helpful stranger had said BUT also he sees a spotted stallion (@Dragomir) moving nearer to the ant hill and abandoning a lovely web-draped stick in the process. Creeping around the spider-tree he snatches up the stick and bends his neck around to swipe the sticky, webby end towards the ants remaining on his belly.

At first, it seemed like her careful, hesitant guidance of the ants with the dreadful drops of clay from her shoulder seemed to work. For the span of a few heartbeats-- but then it became unfortunately clear that the strange calf's (and everyone else's) attempts to herd the ants was most assuredly not working. The filly wide, bleached eyes watched for a few moments, frozen as the small insects turned away from the clay. Unsure of what they would do (as she generally made it a habit to stay away creepy-crawlers) as their small legs scrambled up her barred limbs.

"AAHh--" Her shriek was loud and heartbreaking, as were the quivers the wracked her body the moment many small pinchers sliced through her delicate and sensitive skin. Grey clay poured from her spine, falling unknowingly into a rough, metal object held by a taller, bay stallion. But the filly was too panicked to really see him, though her shaking and jerking limbs and body didn't move too far away from the smearing of clay on her coat. Her small hooves did skitter and dance through the ants, however, pale eyes rolling in her head.

The ants assaulting the horses quickly find themselves battling against water, mud, and heat, and though they manage to pile up, and spill out and over Ru’in’s bronze creations, the slick walls do slow them somewhat, many of the ants simply broiling and teeming, about and over their brethren, until they are too exhausted to march anymore. When the flaming spider thrown by Astarot is thrown into the huddled mass, however, things become a bit more interesting; with audible sizzles of their exoskeletons, and the vaporous venting of their gooey insides (sounding quite like the shrill, tiny screams of ant death), the ants broiling out of the hill are met with an incendiary death for several minutes, before the golem is extinguished.

Those who find water find themselves free of the torment of any further ants, but many of the enraged, large black devils remain clamped to their skin, in a valiant effort to avenge their captured and incinerated comrades. Though they are slowly smothered, Syrena, Maude, and Zubari don’t find relief immediately, having to wait for the ants to drown before they finally let go.

The fire spiders out in the open are highly effective, as well, leaving swathes of ants crispy and dying in their wake, at least until the scattered ants are seemingly driven on by some unheard, minuscule war cry from the tunnels below. Swelling over the small, burning spiders by the hundreds in suddenly reorganized troupes, the first many to swell over the blazing bodies of the fire spiders are quickly murdered by the flaming arachnids, but soon, thousands of black ants amass on each of Volterra’s golems, and they can ward off the assault on the others no more.

The clay quickly begins to smother out the ants, but, like the horses in the water, Esinakh doesn’t immediately gain relief, having to wait for them to be suffocated before they let go. Dragomir, too, suffers the ants wrath, the hateful avengers biting into his soft nose as he rushes to aid the filly. Her falling clay, however, quickly builds up a gooey, high death count, with lots of ants crushed beneath her hooves, and stuck beneath the wet mud.

Patrick, Alysanne, Yael, and Toulouse find that for as many ants as they crush or knock away, others replace them. To boot, the decapitated or dying ants still cling to their bodies with their last mustering of strength, only falling away when every last nerve ending gives in to the light. Still, a large number of the biting cretins have been thwarted or slain by the others, and soon, there seems to be an end in sight – at least until the ants suspiciously stop arriving from the mouth of the mound.

About three feet to the right of the mound, the earth seems to gently skitter, granules of sand wobbling, and shifting. Soon, a small hole appears, which gradually widens, faster and faster, until a broad opening in the ground reveals a branch of the carpenter ant’s tunnel network below. Rising up out of this opening is the Queen herself!

The reason as to the success of this colony is obvious at the sight of this magnanimous Ant Queen. Though her soldiers are large ants, she is by far the largest; nearly four inches long, with glistening, ivory bordered wings, the mother of the hive is a glistening, opalescent green and blue. As obviously magical as she is pretty, the enraged Queen takes to the skies, flying up into the air in the center of the clearing.

Her losing army withdraws into the ant hive, except those still clutching violently to the skin of their attackers, leaving their commander to win the battle, or die trying. With a loud hum of her wings, the Ant Queen seems to huddle into herself, before her abdomen lunges outwards, each thrust projecting magical bullets of ice towards the horses at random. Leaving no creature within the clearing unscathed, the Queen viciously defends her children, giving them time to escape deep into their tunnels.

[ The Ant Queen has appeared, and the rest of the ants have retreated back into the anthill via the new entrance she has created! The Queen is now launching small, ice projectiles at anyone in the clearing.

You have 72 hours to respond to this final round! ]

The bites are painful, but his spiders seem to be met with some success; the stallion quickly realises that their weakness is fire. Try as they might, even the united force of the ants cannot fight against the furnace that rages inside each of Volterra's stone creations, and he watches with grim satisfaction as the spiders perform their job admirably.

Suddenly it all falls quiet. For a moment he thinks they've won, and that the prize will be given any moment now (because after all this biting badness, there sure as hell better be a prize), but then something rises from the hill and the warrior realises that the battle is far from over. This ant is obviously the queen, and like the queen of all species (in his head, Vadir purrs pointedly) she is far larger and stronger than her kin. From her carapace launch dozens of tiny icicles, and Volterra flinches aside as one comes directly towards him. It doesn't prevent the small javelin from embedding itself into his muscular shoulder, however, and he hisses and pins his ears as pain floods through him. Blood trickles down his leg, coating the corpses of the few ants that cling obstinately to his skin.

Where ARE you? he bellows to his dragons. Vadir's flame could see off this ant queen in seconds, but both red and gold's mental voices are dim when they reply. "Hunting in the north." They send him an image of snow and ice, of deer pursued across the tundra, and the Indomitable knows they'd never get back in time to help him. He must improvise. Fire obviously works, so with a glance around at the others nearby to see what they plan to do, he summons his magic again.

This time, instead of creating dozens of tiny spiders, he focuses his strength on creating one medium-sized dragon-golem, modelled on his own fearsome companions. The dragon-golem has eyes of molten fire, glowing like stars in its rugged, crude stone head with tapered snout and savage teeth. He's amazed that it can actually fly given its weight, but he's reminded of Isopia's stone creatures soaring through the air and reminds himself that magic is magic, with its own set of rules. The golem is cumbersome, but hopefully effective.

The golem beats its great rock wings and slams towards the ant queen. Like Vadir or Vérzés would do, it attempts to approach from above and tries to tackle the ant queen towards the ground, the cracks in its stone skin holding enough lava inside to hopefully burn her to a crisp as it tries to clutch her in its death grip. The other gathered horses will hopefully try to disrupt the nest and access the main body of the ants - Volterra wants to take down the queen.

Satisfying sizzling meet his ears as he tosses the fire spider over the wall. He watches the other try their best to be rid of the ants. His eyes shift to the foals first, then his father. He follows the black beast's gaze to the remaining fire spiders. He wished he had some sort of fire magic to chase the things away more affectingly. Everything seems to freeze at once as he watches the earth move quietly to his left. He stands still waiting, figuring the fighting is over.

Oh boy is he wrong. A hole appears and a a queen rises from the ground; the largest ant he has ever seen. Her wings burst open and she takes flight, instead of watching her buzz around them he watches the other ants. The ones that are still living and on the ground scurry for the new hole. His mind works fast as he watches them all retreat. He doesn't like the thought of attacking anything that is running away.

Ice pelts his rump and he bucks in response blood coursing down his butt and leg. He snarls and looks up at the queen. Ice shoots from her, at everyone in the clearing. Then he understands. "NO! They are retreating! She is trying to protect her family! The spiders have more than enough to eat, leave them be!" His voice is a deep bellow, and he hopes everyone will hear his words. "Apa, wait and see what happens!" He turns his blue and red eyes towards his father, more of a command than a question. That might be a mistake all on its own, but he is sure he is right.

i want to be wild, beautiful and free

It’s basically a massacre on both sides. The gathered horses manage to kill a sizeable number of ants, but the buggers are limitless. They just keep coming, learning from their fallen comrades. It takes a while for the ones that clamp to her skin to drown in the tiny little stream she’s found, and she splashes around like a fool the entire time. It’s more than enough time for the buggers to crawl past the scales on her legs, biting into flesh instead, which hurts like a mofo. There will be welts on her skin far longer than she cares to think about. Whatever the ants may or may not give them cannot possibly be worth this.

Not that she suspects there’s an escaping from this situation now. She stays in the water because it’s the safest location. It stopped more ants from coming to attack her, and though she is miserable trying to kill the ones that cling to her skin with every ounce of their strength, at least there aren’t more ants attacking. Not everyone is so lucky. Some remove ants as quickly as new ones replace them. She watches the weird dance with trees and wings that a few of the horse’s attempt, and it’s almost enough to make her laugh. Almost.

And then, suddenly, the ants stop. They stop pouring from their hill like lava from a volcano. And she stares at them in horror, because whatever is happening cannot possibly be good. Soon the earth beside the mound begins to shift, giving way to another hole and a clearly magical Ant Queen.

No. Just really no.

She almost runs. This cannot possibly be worth it. But before her brain manages to communicate this thought to her feet, the ants are retreating into the new hole and the Queen is soaring into the air. And then she’s shooting magical ice bullets. Seriously? She’s farting out magical ice bullets. Could Syrena’s life get any more screwed up? Probably. Be careful what you wish for.

An icicle comes soaring in her direction, and Syrena is by no means battle trained. She dives out of the way, slipping in the river and at least managing to crush a few more ants clinging to her skin. The icicle still takes a nice slice out of her side, and she manages to stifle a scream or a curse – whatever was about to fly off her lips. Maybe if she just stays silent and out of the way she can escape this madness.

The stallion with the fire creatures creates a dragon-like thing and sends it at the Queen, and the kid yells something then about the Queen protecting her family. And Syrena kind of gets it. Not that she has some mothering instinct, but most animals do. Most animals will die for their children in a heartbeat.

She backs further away from the ant hill, because honestly, this is the only thing she can do. She’s not going to beat a magical ant by flinging rocks and hoping to hit it. She has no fire to offer, and water plants sure aren’t going to help. It’s not like she can magically make said water plants appear around a flying creature.

She keeps backing away, trying to avoid the flying ice bullets, though they are impossible to dodge. She takes various hits, leaving cuts and nicks in her skin. She does her best to hide herself in some trees, hoping they would take the brunt of the ice bombs instead of her skin. And she waits, hoping to hell this kid is right and if they just leave the ants alone, they will stay away. There are so many dead ants at this point, and plenty far enough away from the mounds, that hopefully it will be enough. That, or whoever made those bronze sheets before can just plug up those holes while the Queen burns.

[Syrena agrees with Astarot and backs away in the ant hill, trying to hide from the ice bullets behind a bunch of trees as best she can.]

Goldeneyes shut in horror and pain. They still attempted to bite and sing at his coat. The colt folded his legs and allowed his body to lower into the water. Wiggling and moving around he tried to make waves and splash the bastards off of him. When he stands back up his attention flicks to Maude. He felt so bad for her. It was his fault that she got into this situation, and she was trying to help with his idea. Trying to move closer to her he splashed water across her body to try and help wash off the terrors. Then he attempted to rub his forehead against her shoulders to try and wipe away the little fire assholes; if she would allow. "I am sorry Maude. I did not think the ants would attack like that." The boy huffed slightly watching the ants turn around and run back to their home. Then golden eyes widened as the ground shook and moved. What the hell was happening now?!

Remaining in the water the small boy flicked his golden eyes to the filly. Great something else they had to deal with. Zubari mumbled to himself with low deep tones. "See if I ever help a damn spider again." Looks of annoyance fell upon hi face as the sight of the Queen ant came into view. Well, what the fuck were they suppose to do now!? Tell her they were sorry for trying to feed her children to the spiders? Nope, he was sure you can not reason with a damn bug. Then to make things better it started throwing ice spikes at them. His horned skull ducked quickly as a spike almost impaled his ear. "God okay!! I won't touch another fucking ant!! Happy now queenie ?!" The boy screamed at the large bug as he ducked again, avoiding another ice spike. Golden eyes flicked to his friend to see what she was going to do.

The large scary man made a dragon out of fire. Golden eyes watched in amazement. It seemed like it was not that long ago Zubari lead the man to edge, now the beat was trying to save their ass with fire dragons. He was not sure what to think of the whole thing, and the spotted boy could not do too much. He had no magic and he was just a child. A few others tried to stop Volterra from attacking the queen. "God is this even worth it!? What do you want ant lady!? " The boy shrieked as the ice peppered his chocolate pelt. Jumping out of the water and running into the shelter of the trees. "Maude try to find shelter !!" he screamed to his friend tring to dodge the ice bullets.

"Talk."

At first Patrick's efforts with the appropriated, clever stick do seem to be making headway for him. This approach isn't doing anything about cutting off the torrent of incoming ants however. Those that make it past the other horses continue to find the young unicorn. Eventually he has as many swarming up his legs and across his back as he did to begin with. For a short time the colt attempts to ignore this, still stubbornly scraping at his belly with that stick. It is not long before the biting sets his hide to twitching uncontrollably though and red welts from the initial round of bites are now visible in some places as well.

"Arrr...urgh...gah..."

Again he is reduced to stomping and dancing about gracelessly. Finally the boy gives in and executes another vigorous roll which has pretty much the same impact as it did the first time. Just as he is getting back to his feet again the onslaught, except for the itching of course, stops. This lull is sudden and suspicious...

Turning his head, with ears flattened in distress, he peers warily over his shoulder at the ant hill and the other horses who are still nearest to it. Sure enough, the ants are retreating but something new has come into the picture. This something is big, ant-like, winged and not especially friendly looking. Before the insect warriors have even completed their retreat the flying creature begins an air assault on the unfortunate equines below.

Patrick is distant enough from the front line that he has a few moments to gape during which nothing new happens to him. Then several "bullets" from the unnatural hail storm ricochet off a nearby tree and pelt him in the rump. This, at last, is too much for the boy. With a squeal he turns and flees to the water where he pushes his way in among the others. Wading out to the middle he ducks down until only his eyes, nostrils and the flat of his face are visible above the surface. From there he watches the scene in unmistakable misery.

Yael's offer had been most generous, Though the gelding found himself almost unnable to approach the gilded mare - he was already itching ferociously upon the trees with each approaching sentinel from the nest, attempting desperately to rid himself of them forever.
"Thank you Yael but-" there was no time to explain, this was getting far out of hand.
"For god's sake!" the gelding boomed as he attempted to stomp on the lines of approaching soldiers.

And finally, as if on que the ants began to disperse. Rushing back to their home with great urgency, Toulouse looked upon the spiders with a less-than-pleased look upon his countenance. Happy?
But it was far from over.
Out of the mound came the queen. At first the gelding wished to make an uncomfortable, poorly timed joke at how alike she and Alysanne looked, but that soon left his mind when what could only be described as an assault began. A icy bullet powered into Toulouses ribs, leaving a messy welt and causing a sharp cry of pain to escape from the gilded one's maw.
"BY THE GODS, JUST SQUISH IT!"

Leaping forwards, Toulouse attempts to beat the devilish creature from out of the air... all the while being pummelled by a volley of icy bullets.

Though the painful bites of the ants already inspired tears in flooding lines down each of her pond saturated cheeks, the valiant efforts of Zubari to help her, while he is surely in pain himself, add wails and snuffles to the already dismal chorus chimed by the filly. She’s so touched! Here she thought he disliked her, and after all, he truly did care! Running her nose across his pelt to try and remove the ants, too, Maude finds the little black creatures hard to see, her eyes are so clouded by her pained and elated tears. So, when her friend apologizes as if this is his fault, she hiccups and attempts to throw her neck over his shoulder, to clasp him to her chest in a hug of gratitude, and the absence of blame held in her heart.

Oh, its okay, Zubi! You didn’t make them do it,” she sniffles, retreating bashfully away from her friend, and somewhat frightfully, as the clearing around them suddenly quiets, no longer filled with the sound of hooves stamping, and voices shouting in alarm.

The quiet before the storm, or so went some of her mother’s tales. Maude was pretty sure this was one of those times, even though a storm has already rushed through, and she really just wishes it would all stop. She’d just wanted to hang out with Zubari, and help the spiders, not get hurt all over, and a soggy, pond water tail!

Her eyes widen with absolute shock and enthrallment when the Queen appears, however, the arrival of the large bug not quite the horrible beast the child had been expecting. Actually, she’s quite pretty, and Maude even mouths a wide, eager “Oh!” of excitement before the ant-mother unleashes her hail of violence.

WHY?!” she shrieks, plunging downwards into the water as much as she can when one of the projectiles narrowly misses her already griffon nicked ear; her dainty, split hooves splay beneath her to keep her as deeply abreast as possible, the filly ironically dipping downward at the same time as Patrick’s wild arrival alongside her.

By the Gods, just squish it! Yells Toulouse, the man who’d found and help saved her mother. Maude sort of agrees, but she also can’t help but sympathize with the Ant Queen when Astarot speaks up on her behalf. He’s right! If someone attacked the Edge, Queen Alysanne and King Tembovu would smash them, just like this pretty bug was trying to do now. Huddling up next to the strange boy for sheer comfort, her welted skin stings, but so do her eyes, from all her tears, but with a warbled shout, she takes to the side of those defending the pretty blue insect.

Oh, stop it! She really is just protecting her family!” she wails, so distraught from the ant attack that she is sure the sight of such a beautiful creature being crushed for her honorable actions would drive her mad, “maybe if we leave, she’ll go home!

Everyone else could leave, first, though. She wasn’t about to get out of this pond to test the theory, and risk getting struck with one of the bug’s scary ice pellets.

[ OOC: Continues to huddle in the pond, clinging to Patrick while telling everyone to leave the bug alone. ]

"I know it hurts," he tries to sympathize, lamely smudging clay across the unknown filly’s coat when he can manage to get his aim right, considering how she won’t stop moving, "but you need to try and stay still?"

Whether his imploration helps or not, his mouth is full of clay regardless, and other matters swiftly besiege his thoughts.

"What the – ow! Ow! Hey!" Dragomir is soon shouting, as the ants move from Esinakh, onto him. Though he’d deftly and adamantly tried to cover her in clay up until this point, he is now fully aware of why the filly is having such a struggle remaining still; it hurts like hell! Not prone to swearing, especially in front of children, and ladies, the stallion internalizes all the vile curses he wishes to dispel on the vindictive clamps latched onto his face, but also discontinues his attempted salvation of the ant bedecked foal. He’s also so preoccupied with trying to rub them off onto his clay dirtied forelimbs to notice that the attack of the ants has stopped.

His clumsy hooves have knocked over his horribly crafted bucket in the process of his pained stumbles, spilling a slow-motion wave of clay across the earth. Regardless, he dips his nose down and up, covering his own legs, now, and smearing the mud all over his face, instead of Esinakh.

He’s quite surprised, then, when the first icy bullet penetrates into his skin. Bucking upwards and to the side in an ungainly motion of satchels, and poorly toned, lazy crafter’s sinew, the tricolored stallion balks away from the painful pinprick only to find another, and another striking him from afar. Looking wild eyed about him for the source, the clay christened stallion discovers the hovering ant queen with fear evident across every pore of his face.

Hasn’t today been bad enough?!

Quickly siding with the warrior and his flaming, stone dragon, and the pale, slender fellow (recognizable, possibly from the Edge, or the Falls, Dragomir does not know for certain; he’s certainly not sociable enough to know more than his face is familiar, after all), the introverted stallion decides assaulting the insect is a good option.

Where were the spiders, that all of this was for? He thinks, disgruntled with the entire situation, growing increasingly more frustrated and angry with each strike of the bug’s magic bullets, until, at last, he holds back his anger no longer, and surges forward. The tall, awkward stallion thunders towards the insect in a graceless charge, his ears pinned. Though he rarely relinquishes the control he has over his father’s inherited rage, and brute strength, he does so now, mostly out of pure frustration. Even the cries of the children and the continued stings of the flying ant’s chilly arsenal don’t penetrate the roar of his internalized aggression once its wings have been allowed to unfurl, and though he is not a tempered weapon, like the tall black assaulting the insect queen, he is a son of the Steadfast.

Prepare to die, bug queen, beneath hooves or ivory!

Despite their best efforts and gritted teeth, despite teamwork, their efforts are to no avail. Her breath hisses out from between her teeth. Hot. Full of unvoiced pain. Eventually it becomes too much and she growls at the bugs that seem to burrow into her skin. “Tamut! You fucking bugs. Tamut!” She’s not the only one suffering; moans and groans reach her ears as the entire group seems to have taken whatever punishment the spiders could foresee. Her attempts continue, but they are weaker than before, until it seems that she is actually making some sort of headway in brushing the ants off…?

The living ants retreat, but what rises to take their place is something Yael’s never seen before. A massive Queen, supported only by her wings and - ow! Yael squeals, taken more by surprise than actually in pain, though yes, it did sting. Less than the ants, so it seems… easier to withstand, somehow. She, however, has no idea how to fight the Queen. A large, brawny stallion takes the lead in an attack, followed by Toulouse and another, while some advocate for just leaving the bugs alone, and still more hide from the ice assault. As the situation stands to the little golden mare, another set of hooves or teeth will do no good against the Queen; she will only get in the way.

Better to help protect the children, yes? Yael hurries over to the two in the water and does her best to fan her wings and protect them from the pellets. She turns her head away, trying to protect the sensitive bits from the worst of it.

This isn't going well. And she's beginning to think it wasn't worth it to begin with.

Ants were quickly getting to the top of Alysanne’s list of the most hated creatures alive as they continue to swarm across her body, their efforts of knocking them off only make room for more ants to take their place. Alysanne snorted in frustration but did not give up - there would be an end to their numbers eventually. Just as she was considering joining the others in the water - the swarm stopped.

She was still covered and the bites of the ants were starting to itch terribly, but for a moment there was peace.

Or the calm before the storm.

A giant, winged ant flew out of the hive - for such a small creature, she looked furious and they all discovered what ants can do when they get angry. Shards of ice shoot out from her abdomen, one slicing Alysanne’s cheek as she turned her head at the right moment, just missing her eye. Others dart towards her, cutting into her skin and, ironically, knocking a few of the ants off. There’s more chaos - some are seeking shelter from this new assault, others are trying to take down the queen. The voice of one of the colts caught Alysanne’s attention, urging them to stop. She was just a mother protecting her children.

That was something Alysanne could understand.

That thought leached the anger and annoyance from her. Instead of joining in with those that were trying to attack the queen - she moved in another direction. Towards @Esinakh, one of Nyx’s children. In a quick flutter of moment Aly attempted to place herself between the girl and the shards of ice that were being shot out - unfurling her large white wings. It hurt when the ice hit them, sure, but she knew it was better than the girl getting hit with them.

Spiraling up out of the reach of the assaulting horses, the Queen uses her wings to nimbly evade the first few attempts on her life. She peppers the bumbling paint who tries to bite her with pellets of ice for all the useless snaps of his jaws, and she does the same to Toulouse, when his nimble leap strives to strike her from the sky. Deftly outmaneuvering them, the Queen feels she is faced with no real challenge until the flaming, stone dragon wheels towards her.

Ants, however, are warriors. The sight of loathed fire rouses her anger, the ivory trimmed wings upon her back beginning to hum viciously, their rate of beating accelerated. Shimmering down from her wings, a delicate, dainty snowfall begins, like powdered snow gusted on a breeze, and the snowy whir of her chilly appendages ghosts the warm, spring air with misty curls, radiating from her magical body. Drawing on her well of strength, the Queen is suddenly shrouded in a thick layer of protective ice plating, and flying with high speed towards Volterra’s stony creation.

They crash together with a resounding boom, the magical ant using her third, and final magic at the last second. Thousands upon thousands of narrow, icy needles explode from her body, burrowing through the cracks in the super heated stone dragon’s body, and with a smoldering blast of ruptured rock, ember, and ash, the golem is destroyed.

The victory over her flaming enemy, and the salvation of her children, does not come without a cost, however.

Floating behind the quick descent of the heavy golem fragments is the Queen, her energy all but spent, and the swift hum of her pretty wings stilled. With a thud, the aquamarine ant falls to the earth, scrambling to make her way to the entrance of her tunnels. Her wounds, however, prove too much, and within a few, creeping steps, she ceases to move at all, and flops limply down onto the ground.

Rising from her body, a shimmering, chill aura begins to glow and ripple of its own accord. Hovering for a few moments above the body of the felled Queen, the magic of the ant hill flutters, as if looking around at the horses gathered, before shooting, quite rapidly, towards Yael, where it seeks to imbed itself into her body.

Perhaps with the power it could give her, no more fine monarchs would have to die in order to appease greedy spiders.

Marching solemnly from the newly torn opening into their tunnels, a single file line of ants morosely collect the body of their leader, and carry her, for the last time, into their dark home.

[ The Queen valiantly defeats the dragon golem, before succumbing to her wounds and weariness. A small number of ants appear to carry her body home, and the spiders are otherwise still no where to be seen.

Yael wins the drop! Congratulations!

like a jar, you housed infinite tenderness
and infinite tenderness shattered you
BOOM! Yael’s had snaps around, catching nothing but the aftermath of the collision; an explosion of ash, the smell of sulfur in the air, and through the dim cloud, the falling form of the Ant Queen. Her light is dimmed, flickering like a dying firefly, and Yael turns from her protection of the children with a sad little gasp. It isn’t her fault the spiders were manipulative and greedy, nor should it be her life that is sacrificed because the horses are too stupid to say no to talking spiders.

Yael’s compassionate gaze follows the heroic Queen as she loses her life for her children. Ah, but what is that? Movement draws her eyes from the immobile body to a shimmering ripple (almost like a heat wave, she thinks) that seems to pull itself from the exoskeleton. And then, like magic had once before, it flies straight towards her. Its impact is hard, causing the little golden mare to take a step back and catch the breath that was forced from her lungs. Her head shakes back and forth, and she knows she must use her newfound powers - whatever they may be - for good. It was a small drop in the massive bucket she once balanced precipitously on her head, but at least now she would not feel as helpless as before.

Crossing the distance between the water and the ant hill, her nose drops to the entrance to their home, and she says simply, “I am sorry.”

A thank you seemed too… improper right now.
