Of course she'd been tall. Leggy. Thin. The small blonde scowled to herself, munching furiously on a lovely tuft of fresh spring grass. She wasn't going to let good food go to waste just because some idiots liked skin and bones. Laire wasn't meant to look like that! If she carried so little weight the wind would pick her up and blow her away, what with her being so short. No, she wasn't going to be down on herself just because of him. She could do so much better- she was sure this Helovia place would have even more handsomerer (yes, that was a word, thank you) men about. Not that she needed a man quite yet. She needed friends first. Maybe a man then, if she reaaally felt the need. The palomino snorted to herself, struggling for the second time today to hold back tears.

Damn him. Was there any real need to lead her on for so long if he was just going to go walkabouts the second she turned her back? She pouted slightly, her black, velvety muzzle wrinkling. He hadn't even begged for forgiveness or anything of the sort. That was what really hurt her ego- the fact he'd said it wasn't a big deal, like they weren't even monogamous in the first place. Maybe they hadn't been, and she'd just been following him blindly like she usually did. She had just been a travelling companion to him- a convenient place to put his thingy. The mare shuddered at her own stupidity.

Laire wasn't sure how long she'd been going now, but she was hoping her journey was coming to its end. She was fairly sure she wasn't lost. Walk along the ridgeline till you come to a big tree, walk north till you find a small pond swamped with willow trees, then continue Southwest till you found yourself in the midst of the Threshold. As the scenery changed slowly to forest, she felt she was making her way into the depths of it. Laire she continued along with her small, sure strides, shuddering as she felt a queer sensation pass over her, stomach tightening slightly. That seemed like proof she had indeed found Helovia, and the odd feeling dissipated, only to be replaced by nervous excitement. The petite mare took a deep breath and was overwhelmed by the enormous amount of scents on the air- horses of every kind, from the strange winged ones she'd hardly seen, to horned ones like herself, to ones not gifted with either... Or perhaps both.

Young and joyful, she could not help but let out a small whinny, encouraging strangers to come to meet her. It did not cross her mind for a second that someone might be out to hurt her. No, she was just looking forward to some company at long last.

Ráeru

"Look at us, studying the fundamentals,
Back when we were young and now we’re up here on another level."

The movement of her footfalls came to a stop and her head tilted to the side as the sound of hooves reached her. Drawing in a deep breath she held it and then released the air, sometimes meeting others took more energy than she had. Today however she felt up to the task, if only just. Socialising had never been a skill of hers but with joining The Edge she was trying harder to make a difference, trying harder to interact with others. Crossing a stream she as she hurried over the other side of the bank, she noted a light hued coat - a pale yellow, with a light pattern decorating the mare's side. Brushing through the trees she stopped before the mare and kept her strange glassy gaze onto the figure of the lighter mare. "You're awfully cheerful." She responded to the mare's whinny. Being happy or full of cheer was not emotions that the pale mare was used to. In fact Ráeru was something of a dark horse, not physically as most did not have a lighter coat that hers, but emotionally. Most the time Ráeru preferred to remain at the back, out of sight and out of mind. Yet this mare was new and most likely in need of the procreation and comfort that a herd land offered and this was something that Ráeru could offer to the yellow hued mare. Additionally new comers sometimes became overwhelmed when entering a new land and became in need of medical attention - a service that Ráeru could provide them.

Clearing her throat she stepped further out from the trees and even managed a small, although admittedly awkward, smile. That's what you were supposed to do right? Smile in order to appear friendly. After another breath the smile slipped from her chops, her strange gaze returned to the surroundings. "I'm Ráeru of The World's Edge." Though she was no longer smiling her voice was friendly enough. "Welcome to Helovia."

The young mare was thankful she did not have to wait long- being alone had quickly grown tedious, and she was very relieved to be over it. Her small, neat ears twitched back and forth as she tried to discover where her new friend was coming from. Her violet eyes narrowed in on the subject, her shrill call turning to a welcoming rumble. She liked making it clear how she was feeling. "Hello there! Her soft voice carried to the mare just as she stopped to stand in front of her, giving Laire the opportunity to give her the once over.

She was very tall. Most horses were tall to the petite vixen, but this lady was very tall. She looked quite young, perhaps her own age, with a snowy pelt and oddly transparent hooves. The golden horse contemplated asking about them, as well as the matching horn, but thought better of it. Her tail was unusual too- like a stick with a puff of fur at the bottom. Her lip quivered trying to contain her curiosity, but she was grateful for her silence when the mare spoke. It did not seem a particularly amused tone, and she struggled not to reel back at the tone. Why wouldn't she be cheerful? "Is there a reason I shouldn't be?" Laire asked, genuine confusion written across her small face.

They had a similar kind of dish in their faces, she noted. Of course, the palomino doubted they had any shared bloodline, due to the distance between her herd and this place, but wouldn't that be splendid? If they were cousins or something? Then she'd surely stick with this horse. She opened her mouth to say as much, but quickly snapped it shut. How ridiculous. Laire was often taken to bouts of fancy, and she tried not to let them go to far so not to shame her. One too many times she had embarrassed herself in her youth by sharing her thoughts, only too be laughed... (not at, with! Laire, we wouldn't laugh at you!). She guessed people she didn't know would not have such an issue with offending her.

The pony turned her gaze back to her companions, marveling at her strange feet. She could see right through them! Wouldn't that hurt? She didn't have any bones or anything in her hooves. Wouldn't that glass, and she was just guessing it was glass it could be some strange metal, get awfully cold? She shuddered. Daresay it would be horrible to get kicked by her. As the mare smiled, Laire gave a huge grin back, ears pricking back to attention. The pale horse was friendly after all. Perhaps her first comment had been humor, or perhaps she just wasn't the cheerful kind. Laire couldn't really understand that, but some people just weren't. "Greetings... Ráeru?" She paused, struggling slightly with the pronunciation but making a great effort to get it somewhat correct. "Sorry. I'm Laire, of Nèamh."

The ink-tipped mare furrowed her brow slightly, before continuing on in her chirpy voice. "Well I suppose, formerly of Nèamh, because I've come here deliberately. I was meant to be with someone else who was going to show me around, but now it's just me!" Even though anger wanted to colour her voice, the small horse managed to keep it upbeat, even if there was somewhat of a strain. It did not occur to her for a second that this new horse might not care about her back story, and might find her ramblings offensive of dull. No, mostly Laire was just chatting to herself. She nodded at the welcome, giving the icy mare a big grin. "Thank you very much." She murmured. It was nice knowing for sure she had made it to Helovia. It was even nicer knowing it was all worth it.

She rolled over the mares previous sentence in her head. World's Edge. Despite all her begging, Tarne had never told her about the herdlands, nevermind about which one he was from. It had made her a bit suspicious that there was a reason behind it- perhaps he was an outlaw, or an outcast, or (and this had been her personal favourite) he was a mighty king, rich and successful, and ruled over all of the land... And of course he hadn't told her, because he was testing if she wanted to be with HIM rather then just with his glory. It all made her want to snort now. She was such a fool.. But that begged the question. "So, where's the World's Edge? What is it like? Are the people nice? Will they be nice to me?" The words just dropped out of her mouth in a big rush, and even her horror at her own incompetence wouldn't stop them. Laire dropped her gaze, embarrassed. If she could have blushed she would have. "Sorry." She mumbled.

Ráeru

"Look at us, studying the fundamentals,
Back when we were young and now we’re up here on another level."

The newcomer greeted her with continued enthusiasm. Ráeru was not grumpy or disapproving, she just wan't big on emotions personally. In fact most the time she was reticent, unfeeling and portraying any emotions she did feel even less so. Additionally she was not trying to discourage the mare from feeling so happy, she'd just been making a blunt comment about the obvious. The welcome drew her closer and she studied the mare with her glassy blue gaze, her strange eyes often causing a chill to rise in others. They both lasted into a silent moment. This was most comfortable for Ráeru as she was not a conversationalist, more comfortable in silence and listening to others speak. Again her eyes drifted down to the strange and complex marking on the mare's side, though they were nothing alike it made her think of her father's marking. Her father's had been more mystical and made of symbols that she did not understand. This one was just interesting, curious and different.

No doubt the mare was moulding over her rather brash (and possibly unwelcome) observation of the mare's cheerfulness. The pale dove waited. Usually such comments put her in rather hot water as they tended to cause upset or anger. This is why the mare's rather calm response surprised her, although it was a fleeting reaction. Ráeru shifted slightly, her hooves sliding along the ground. Sucking in a breath she managed rolled a shoulder in a somewhat dismissive gesture. "No. It was merely an observation." She responded with a indifferent tone and another shrug of her shoulder. With nothing else much to say she settled into silence comfortably.

Following the mare's gaze down to her glass hooves, her brow creasing with confusion. The pale dove did not miss the mare's shudder. Though, not uncomfortable under the mare's scrutiny, she huffed. "Glass." She confirmed with a somewhat sore tone of voice. By now she was used to the stares and confused looks, the whispered and judgmental sideways glances. Though they were generally because of her somewhat detached emotions, never because of her appearance. Yet they still exchanged smiles and her slightly exasperated feelings left her. Yes, her name could be a little strange, and the quick hard to wrap one's tongue around. Clearing her through she instead offered "Aih - roo. For the common tongued pronunciation." It was easier, less vowel sounds and favouriting instead two syllables. "A pleasure Laire."

Ráeru frowned as she pondered the mare's words. "Does this stranger have a name? Perhaps I might have heard of them." She offered as a way of comfort. Often those travelling to Helovia got separated and eventually found their way to the other. Still, she did not doubt that the mare might appreciate her help. She may not be the most pleasant soul to encounter but she was observant and could be helpful in the matters of finding someone.

Allowing the mare a moment to ponder her words, Ráeru surveyed the landscape again. Quite a few times she's traveled through these forest but only on this and two previous occasions had she encountered newcomers. Still, none had yet shown so much interest in The Edge. In fact this mare began overwhelming her with questions about The Edge before she'd even had the chance to offer the mare an escort to the herd-land. Most only wanted to visit first before accepting the land as a home. "The World's Edge sits in the west." She responded slowly, hardly acknowledging the mare's apology for the onslaught of questions. "It is most welcoming, it is my home after all." This was her own quiet way of recognising her strangeness. "They are warm and most welcoming."

Taking a moment to allow the calm to once again influence their conversation, Ráeru cleared her throat and somewhat awkwardly offered her assistance. "Would you care to visit The Edge? I would be your escort." Through it wasn't a partially extravagant offer she felt proud at her invitation. After all, dealing with those constantly full of cheer was exhausting for her. So in truth she supposed that it was also a warning, their journey would be made together, meaning the mare would have to make peace with Ráeru rather withdrawn and dreary disposition.

Uncomfortable in the silence, and more then willing to fill it, the palomino noted the other mares eyes falling onto her side. She felt she couldn't speak up, however, not really being able to give an explanation. The marking was an anomaly for sure. Among her herd it definitely wasn't unheard of, so she never had really paid it much attention. As far as she could make out it was just a intricate circular pattern with no deeper meaning. Just something to make her more unique- much like the mares hooves. Although, if she was being honest, Laire thought they were perhaps a tad more extraordinary. She fought not to stare for too long- this lady was still a stranger.

It wasn't very often she met new people, and perhaps that's why her exuberance was so overwhelming. She would never hesitate to ask a question, or say something, or yell out a greeting, amongst her herd. It made her feel quite homesick, being so unsure. It was difficult trying to stop herself from speaking. All she wanted to do was talk, but it was becomingly blatantly obvious to even Laire that this mare wasn't the talkative kind. She wasn't sure what kind she was- not cruel, or mean, just quiet and a bit withdrawn. It was just the smallest bit unsettling. The golden mare simply nodded at the pale horses comment, biting her tongue against all the things she could otherwise say.

Ráeru had clearly noticed her staring which made the petite girl want to drop her head in shame. It seemed she had perhaps offended her companion, or perhaps she was just awfully use to speculation. "I meant no offense. They are beautiful." She murmured, eyes downcast and set on her own (much less interesting) hooves. Laire couldn't help but bring her heather gaze back to the mare, giving her a sweet smile. She was nice, this women, even if she tried to hide it, or it was buried underneath. She seemed quite old- mysterious, even as the pony guessed her about the same age. Wise, perhaps. Whatever it was, Laire decided then and there she liked her.

She giggled slightly at Ráeru's question, shaking her dainty head. "Kind as that is, I'd prefer to not know his whereabouts, nor who he actually is." Laire shrugged her narrow shoulders, pushing aside the unpleasant feelings the conversation produced. No, she was adamant that she was excited about the future, and therefore would leave the past exactly where it was. There was no way in hell she would go looking for it, even if her bleeding heart wanted her to. For now, she'd keep her mind on finding a new herd, finding new friends- with perhaps the Edge as a starting point. The mare listened to her companion's slow words, wishing for more description, but biting her tongue to stop herself from asking. Welcoming sounded like a good start, however.

"It sounds wonderful." She murmured, trying not to be frustrated by the lack of new information. However, that feeling fled as soon as her new friend made her next offer. "Wow, you'd do that? Yes please!" The exuberance returned to her voice and her eyes were alight with excitement. What an adventure. She was doing just fine by herself.
