Does it have to start with a broken heart
Broken dreams and bleeding parts

As time wore on the pregnancies and births got easier. She knew what to expect and she knew the pain that came with childbirth. She also knew the reward that came along with it. Each child she birthed was a gift and she loved each of them despite some of the decisions they might make. Even when she didn't see them often she still worried for them, still hoped they were doing well, prayed that they would visit, and wished them well.

When time drew near for the end of her pregnancy, Soleil had taken to the forest finding comfort and protection among the thick trees. As labor came upon her she had found a safe place nestled deep in the woods where she would not be easily seen and there she gave birth to her newest child.

She smiled as she looked upon him, her muzzle traveling over his tiny body as her tongue swept away the wetness from his body and encouraged the circulation of blood to warm him and bring him to his feet. Only one child this time. It made the mare sigh in relief that the labor had been short and relatively easy. "Soren." She called her youngest affectionately.

The first sensation to meet the colt's body was cold. Followed quickly after was intense white, the light of day flooding his small blue eyes for the first time. He'd tumbled from the warmth of his mother's belly onto the frigid ground, clumsy and wet, and the forest whirled around him for many moments. The colors were sharp and brilliant in his view, the smells of Frostfall intoxicating. Gone was the dark cove in which his little body had formed.

Something soft stroked him. Slowly, squinting crystal pools took in the sight of the mare who had birthed him. She was white like the snow, but with some silvery marks on her coat. She was bright and lovely and sweet all at once. Instinctively, the colt wriggles closer to her velvety side, not yet making any effort to stand. For a few seconds, he let his blackened muzzle rest against her as she cleaned, letting his small body pool some more strength. His dam's feminine voice spoke, and the foal raised his head to look at her again. In time, he would learn that what she had said was his own name. For the time being, he only gazed lovingly up to her and let out a low nicker, the ardor in his voice translating to mother for any ear.

PALADIN
The sound of iron shocks is stuck in my head

Paladin stood over his pregnant mate once more wondering why he had ever agreed to having another child. He grimaced, watching again as she shifted in pain, and felt helpless. The stallion hated that feeling, and though all of his children were a blessing, the means in which they emerged to this world was barbaric. He stood close to Soleil in the forest, trying to protect her from the snow. If his magic did not cause so much pain, he would use it to protect her from the cold. But no. He was a tool of destruction and pain. How did he deserve such kindness?

This winter had not been kind to Paladin's psyche, especially not with the advent of his two sisters and Donovan was still lost to Isilme. He had left the throne to three, and he could only hope that they would honor his teachings. What would happen if they did not? Helovia would be thrust into a war of the species, and his daughters, sons, and family would be thrown into the fray as hybrids and mixed lovers. Fools. All of them.

Soleil seemed to be in less stress this time, and when a grey, dark colt settled into the snow, he smiled. Was there to be another? The trend of Soleil giving birth to twins was almost tradition now, but he was happy to only have her body go through one birth this time around. Paladin watched as Soleil cleaned the boy off and chuckled when he glanced up into her eyes with adoration. Loving Soleil was the simplest task.

The dark, crimson eyed stallion approached then, his massive hooves settling close to the young boy. His heart swelled with protection with he saw that one of his hooves was nearly the size of the boy's shoulder. Paladin leaned down and gently nuzzled his son between the ears, loving the name that Soleil had chosen for the strong lad. "Welcome to the world, Soren," he rumbled in his deep, quiet voice. Paladin then worked with his hooves, striking the snow free from the earth so that it would not melt and freeze his child.

Frostfall was a delicate time to bear children, and he would not allow his son to suffer through the snow unaided.

Steam had begun to rise off of her rapidly cooling sides, chilling her as she tried to bring warmth to her young son. Why had she chosen to breed so late? She should have known better. Winter was no time for a foal to be making its debut into the world. Soleil could only hope that the snow would begin to thaw soon with the coming of spring.

She shuffled a few steps to the side as Paladin began to scrape away the snow from around their young son's body. He would never know just how thankful she was for his constant presence during the births of each of their children. He was always there when she needed support and she loved him more and more for it with each breath she took and every passing day.

Soren nickered to her, the sound low and soft but it still brought tears to her eyes. She smiled and nuzzled her son then lifted her head and looked at Paladin. "He'll be strong, Paladin." She predicted then looked back down at her son, pride written not only in her expression but in her stance as well.

The sooty colt laid still on the ground, lulled by the warmth that was radiating through his newly born form. Thanks to his mother's careful cleaning, the blood was beginning to circulate through him strongly. Brilliant cerulean eyes were getting adjusted to the luminosity of day, and they glanced around the woods with clear curiosity. It looked as though all the trees grew straight up into the sky. Did they really reach the soft white clouds up there?

Suddenly, the little one felt a presence to his side. He turned his ebony face around to see a huge leg standing next to him in the snow. Gradually, his gaze tracked up the leg to find the rest of the body attached. It was a huge stallion! He was as dark as could be, except for his legs and fringes. There was radiant red in his eyes, Soren noticed, and before he could do anything but stare, the behemoth was reaching down towards him. He had not yet learned fear, so the colt was more intrigued than frightened when the dark one touched him as affectionately as his mother had. The massive horned one then spoke, punctuating his words with the same word that lovely pale mother had called him before. Slowly, the dappled foal came to the realization that the tall Unicorn was his father, and that the word was his own name. An accomplished whinny rang out into the Frostfall air.

His father began digging at the white ground beside him, and Soren took the cue to stand. With unused, uncoordinated limbs stretching to find purchase on the snowy forest floor, he pushed with what small strength he had summoned. He rose up, away from the ivory cold, and balanced on all four hooves. It was a precarious and wobbly stand at first, but the motions came to him quickly, and soon he was hobbling over to his dam's side. He leaned against her forelegs and wore a proud expression, feeling sure that he'd done well. Inquisitive pool looked from his dam to his sire, reassured by the emotion in both their faces.
