She’d never gone this far south – at least not this way, anyway. Looking out on the red sea of sand tapering out from the dwindling, sparse fringes of the meadow, Maude could see why. The river didn’t reach this far, leaving a parched, empty expanse that seemed to never end, and though she could see a few shrubs, and narrow, sun bleached trees, what lay before her was so unlike her home that she was actually quite afraid to venture out into it.

The swift wind buffets her wavy hair against her neck and haunches as she stares out into the foreign expanse. Miles opened wide before her, so many that the horizon was a distant, blurry line that rippled and moved with the heat cast down by the Sun. Never before had she seen so much of the brim of the world at once, except, perhaps, when she looked out over the sea, where the Moon’s wood fell away to the rocky ocean below. The sea, however, broke the world into a line that made sense to the girl. Water did not grow trees.

Land that had almost none of them, however, made her feel oddly ill inside, and she wasn’t sure why.

Touching her fragrant pouch of leaves for comfort, she looks out again into the red desert, before tentatively stepping out on the sandstone surface. Surprised to discover that a lot of it is stone, rather than sand, she makes it about five yards out before she also notices that there are gemstones embedded in the flat expanses of rock. Eagerly staring at the sparkling objects, she almost forgets to feel uneasy in the strange land.

It can’t be so bad if the ground sparkles, right?

[ OOC: Set on the surface of the Heart, along the southern border of the Meadow. ]

How should we like it if the stars were to burn
With a passion for us we could not return?
If equal affection cannot be,
let the more loving one be me.

T
oday the colt of stone would back-chat gravity. His sand dusted wings were tight from little-to-no use these past number of days, his cranium loose and sleepy from his endless palm tree snoozes. The hobbit was in need for adventure and exploration today, and he wouldn't lay under the coacoa plants nursing the Sultan's stamps forever - besides, Pippin had never seen true colour like that morning had revealed to him. A most vibrant sunrise of gold, azure and sanguine had littered the sky, promising an unpredictable day of weather and potential turmoil in the sky. The goosling stood with his eyes of stone transfixed upon the mountainous range of clouds above, recalling the words of one he loved the most.
Red at night, sheppard's delight. Red in the morning, sheppard's warning.
If mama was right, they might be in for a brumous thunder or the blessing of rain... or (and possibly the most likely outcome) just another cloudless, searing day on the sandswept island.

It was this thought that agitated the young stag to the point of scrunching his nose with distaste. Another day of unforgiving heat was not a day he really looked forward to, and Pip was the kind to look forward to most.
And so it was without a second thought that the hobbit's wings flared, his steps taking him forward. Up and away he aimed, beating his wings somewhat furiously at first in an attempt to get himself well off of the ground, but when he was at a reasonable altitude and soaring high above the dark trenching sea, he allowed them out to their full span.
Where might he flutter to today?

Appearing like a leaf on the breeze to any dragon or krakens below, Pippigrin was fairly confident that his sky-trek would be one fairly successful should it remain interrupted by a gale, unagreeable weather, or anything of the sort. Mind wandering to the forests of the north-east, Pip wondered if he might search for his saucepan, but then again, he was doing just fine on berries and water grasses. The longer he spent waking in the Dragon's Throat the more he came to terms with the fact that Hobbits didn't travel for a reason, and saucepan's were things that were perhaps better left behind.

Not long into his airborne journey the painted Pippigrin soon spotted a peculiar sight upon the horizon; a rocky outcrop, surrounded by a strange dune-like grassland that seemed to leave the desert behind. As he approached, Pip noted how the land soon transitioned from dunes to grassland, and then to wondrous rolling hills far upon the horizon, but then found himself gazing upon a vibrant pit of fire in the outcrop below.
"Oh!" he chirped, his wings folding and beginning to beat frantically once again.

Eyes of ice stared down, down into the heart of their continent, quaking gingerly as fear sent a grapple into his heart. Though, not a moment later, the hum and step of another tore his eyes away.
With his concentration lost, his heart and wings full of fear, Pippigrin searched for the sound that came from another's footsteps, the heat of the fire below beginning to braze his belly. "Oo-OH!" was his squeak, wingbeats forcing his body upward and out, though, he would not last much longer on such frightened pennons.
Reaching for the sparkling rocks on the other side of the hearth, Pippigrin outstretched his legs, reaching desperately for a save from the fall as he frantically flapped his way the edge of the heart.
Landing with a hoof to the sandstone, his body following right over it and crashing like a snowball, Pippigrin was just glad he had made it across.
"OOOF!" he groaned upon impact, a pile of wings, legs, and goose-coloured fur all bundled up in the yellow grass of the transitioning desert.

Slowly, the glimmering stone lures her into the red expanse, and though the peculiar uneasiness in her belly does not fade away, the doll has also never been one to be thwarted by feelings of doubt. After all, no sooner had she begun to think her mother lost to the wild, than she had come home; Katua, too, had appeared when Maude had all but stopped looking.

The world, as the vibrant child saw it, was full of hope, and warmth. Even the fear in her breast of this strange, open land could not indicate more than that she had yet to experience it. It was scary because it was new, and for not a reason but, she tells herself, occasionally looking up from the rubies and sapphires (occasionally finding one loose enough that she might tuck it into her pocket, to leave among the roots of Trewdwellan later). All she sees, for a while, anyway, is the blue horizon, always wobbling with the heat of the afternoon, and, behind her, the growingly distant, green hills.

Assuring herself she’ll turn back no sooner than she doubts she can gallop back to the Meadow in moments, that thought is rushed out of her head when she takes note of the pit of fire swirling at the heart of the desert.

"Wow," she murmurs with awe, slowly approaching the basin of flame as close as she dares, wondering, as she does so, how deep the pit really is. No sooner does the other brim come clear into view through the flickering, upright tails of fire than another person careens suddenly into view, however, causing the filly to bleat aloud, as he crashes and clambers along the very brim of the pit itself (and nearly tumbles in). "Oh no!"

Suddenly far less afraid of the yawning maw of embers than she is for the small man’s life, the child quickly sweeps forward to assist him. The smell of burned hair and flesh is obvious, to her, anyway, and her nose wrinkles up in distaste for the acrid and meaty smell. Concern still crinkles her citrine gaze, however, as she fretfully inquires after the boy (she assumes him to be a child, due to his height).

"Are you okay?" she asks, none of her polite misters or delicate curtsies accompanying her words, lost both in their (assumed) shared youth and her genuine concern for him, "it smells as if you might have burned yourself. I-it’s okay if you did though!"

This being her first encounter in field with a real life medical situation, the girl finds she is quite flustered. Quickly trying to ease any concern which may flare to life at her notice of his injuries, she smiles and swiftly reaches for the brown pouch dangling against her breast, and pulls open the drawstrings to reveal the myriad leaves with; though she doesn’t want to use the leaves she’d worked so hard to collect, she supposes that healing someone is why she gathered them in the first place.

But they smelled so good!

"I can fix you, with these!" she proudly announces, her dainty crown lifting to allow the pony to peer at her collection, if he so desires, "you just have to show me where the fire got ya. I’m Maude, by the way. Who are you?"

[ OOC: And then he talks and she realizes he is a grown ass man and the giant anime eyes of "OMG CUTESTNESS" shall ensue ]

"
OH, Bother!" the quaint bundle of feathers squauked from underneath the dust cloud and the shade of his bruised, tangled wings. The hobbit lay upon his spine, whithers sinking into the grassy dunes as his feet hung over his ribs while his feathers tangled and strugled above.  A great sight escaped his maw as he daintily plucked his wings apart, unfolding them to find an angel striding towards him. Staring doe-eyed and his jaw slacked, the little hobbid craned his neck further forward in an attempt to better view the approaching girl of pearls and copper. At first he couldn't hear her, for the ringing in his ears was much too fierce for any other sounds to break through, though eventually he caught the sound of the dove cooing about having burned himself and that it was okay if he had.

It was true, it seemed he had burned himself; upon turning his gaze down to his stomach he found a singed patch of missing hair, revealing his black skin and in some places, the glowing pink flesh beneath. He'd never sustained an injury quite like it, so at first, it was all quite surreal and dreamlike - he couldn't actually feel it.
Stone-like eyes turned to look upon the angel's face once again, finding her nose-deep in a pouch she carried before out she plucked some sweet smelling herbs.

He made no attempt to stand, only shifted over the bed of sand he found himself laying back-down upon and crossed his back legs in a strange attempt to hide his manhood from the miss - he was quite sure that no one had seen that before; no one could look that low. She spoke her name, and his face lit ever-so-slightly. What a wonderful name she had.
"I'm Pip; a Guardian" He spoke in a strange attempt to reclaim some dignity "and I think it's burnt my tummy" he murmured, embarrassment flooding his cheeks.

Aside from having been burned by the reaching fire, the man is brave; glancing down at his wound and rolling over to show her, she looks up to discover a most awkward image. Giggling demurely, and looking down at her hooves with a bashful flutter of her pale eyelashes, the maiden diverts her gaze before she sees too much.

"Oh - oh!" she compassionately stammers, wincing at the thought of an ouchie on such soft skin, while blushing at the near glimpse of his cautiously covered gentle bits, any of whose she had never seen from such a direct angle before (she wasn't going to today, either, nope!), "It’s okay! Just a second, let me get a salve together, first. You shouldn’t have a scar then."

She busies herself with her leaf pouch, reminding herself that everyone has a body, and sometimes where those bodies get hurt is just a little bit uncomfortable for both the wounded, and the healer. Feeling heat in her cheeks as she fetches out several antiseptic plants from her deep cloak pockets, she crushes them up atop a smooth, river washed stone (also procured from within her breezy draping) and her hoof. Picking up the gooey residue with her ginger lips, the girl shyly approaches the rolled over pony. Cautiously smearing the stuff on his skin and pressing sphagnum down onto it to seal the plant paste beneath, only peering with one eye when she absolutely had to (otherwise clenching them shut), she steps away to squint at the finish product, and finds it satisfactory.

"You should be able to stand up for this last part!" she cheerfully smiles, her citrine eyes wrinkling with her excitement and joy to be able to help (even if it had been really uncomfortable for a little bit, there), "We should probably step away from the fire though, just in case. Leaves are very flammable, you know!"

At her words, she prances back a safe distance from the edge of the burning basin, to allow her wind and earth magic room to, well, work its magic.
