ROLAND

His companions fled from the water’s edge abruptly and obediently, dancing out of the sharks’ reach. There was only water left for them to sink their teeth into, unless they were so bold as to leap ashore. The strange, scaled creature upon the rock recoiled from the prowling fish as well, her frightened scream ringing out  across the beach as she splashed in the shallows and dragged herself up onto the wet sand, sunlight dancing across her colourful tail. Roland watched as she bared startlingly sharp teeth and looked up to the sky, where two dark shadows danced. She reached a hand up to them, fingers attempting to close around a feather or talon, as the ravens darted from her grasp and spiraled upwards.

The Phantom looked out towards the strange light’s source, wondering at what could have caused such a blinding flash, and yet he could find nothing out of the ordinary roaming the pale sands or lurking in the water, aside from the sharp-toothed creatures that prowled in the surf. The air was still warm, a pleasant breeze rolled across the dunes, and the sun shone down upon them, uninterrupted. It seemed whatever magic was at play had extinguished itself already, or so he hoped.

Not taking his chances against the sharks that lurked beyond the shallows, Roland wheeled himself away from the water’s edge. If Rikyn expected them to deal with the creatures in some way, he would not be an eager volunteer. His wary gaze swept across his companions as they gathered, and he watched as the stolen trinket was dropped back into the mermaid’s waiting hands. She seemed to grasp it with a purpose, and Roland began to wonder if it was more than just a simple instrument. Hopefully she was not on the side of the sharks, and they had returned a weapon into corrupt and capable hands.
