“This is it, Nimue,” the sea maiden murmurs to her young companion, her pearly eyes sparkling with excitement, and her lips hardly able to contain her grin, “This is the Hidden Falls!”

With a low, trilling whistle in response, the little orca follows her bondmate as the blue Lady descends, finally exploring the forested wonderland that once contained a fellow herd. She has long-since become accustomed to the rocky ridges and narrow slopes of her mountain home, but the moist, grassy paths that wind through this woodland paradise are far more slippery than soil and gravel—she finds herself unwittingly sliding more than once. Just barely catching herself from a particularly unexpected stumble, she laughs gleefully, shaking her body while she rests on the knoll she’d been guided to.

By this time, Tiamat has made it nearly to the bottom of the terrain (no more than a third of the way left to go), but she waits for a moment where she stands. The velveteen skin of her nostrils curl with each breath, and there is the slightest bit of sweat dampening the warmer parts of her body—all evidence of the minor exertion it took to descend at least half-gracefully down from the bay above—but the ocean mare hardly notices the rate of her heart. With her lips parted into a little ‘O’ of awe, her white eyes take in the beauty that is the Hidden Falls.

The land is aptly named—in all the places that she has traveled to, she has never seen such an extraordinary array of waterfalls! Misting rapids cascade from every direction, connecting, intertwining, and parting, their effervescent vapor catching the sunlight and displaying it in vibrant, dancing colors. Truly, Tiamat can recognize the work of the Earth God here.

“Oh it is beautiful! She exclaims breathlessly, closing her eyes and inhaling the earthen scents around her. Nimue chirps happily in agreement, having wandered from Tiamat’s side and to a shallow pool not far away. The Leviathan glides over the rippling, glassy waters, lowering a fin to skim the surface while she inspects it with delight coursing through their bond. The Ocean’s Light laughs, wondering how she couldn’t have gotten here sooner.

After spending some time up in the Fields, Mesec descended and instead of heading west towards the Edge, he lingered. How long had it been since he had been to the Falls? Not since it was the Foothills, surely. Not since he had lived here, years and years ago, when everything was so different. As soon as Lyra caught onto these thoughts, as soon as she discovered that this was a former home of Mesec, she wouldn’t let it go. She hurried ahead and scurried through the blooming bushes and tried every path she could find. Lucius was along with them too, but soaring overhead as always - keeping an out on them all and suggesting which way they go based on what he could glance through the branches.

Mesec tried to keep up with Lyra as best as he could, but his hooves weren’t as adept at the pathways as her paws, and he inevitably fell behind.

But though Lyra arrived in the Falls first, she was sniffing around beneath bushes and around trees. There were so many new smells for her to discover! Mesec arrived a few minutes later - his dark legs splattered with mud from the journey and showing that he wasn’t as surefooted as he liked to think.

His silver eyes scanned the former herdland, trying to pick out pieces that were familiar from when he had lived here as a colt but there was nothing. This place was beautiful but he couldn’t enjoy it - lost in his memories as he was - until that scanning gaze caught on something blue that stood out from all the green.

The hazy fog of days long past lifted when he recognized her, a smile brightening his silver gaze. “Tiamat!” He called out, and a crash in the bushes behind him let him know that Lyra heard him and was scrambling to catch up. “Fancy seeing you here!” Mesec closed the gap between the with long easy strides, coming up with the intention of standing by her side - a silver muzzle reaching to nudge her shoulder gently with a greeting as he did so. “This place is beautiful, isn’t it?”

The sound of her name has the ocean mare spinning her head, white eyes turning to rest on a familiar face approaching behind her. “Mesec!” Tiamat croons with delight, her sapphire lips curling into a wide and infectious smile. She shifts her weight to give him room at her side, the natural arch of her neck bending as she reaches out to him, eager to greet him and to feel his skin against her own. He touches her shoulder, but she catches his muzzle with her own, nuzzling the bridge of his nose while her pale eyes dance in the sunlight.

The blue Lady feels the urge to lean against the stallion, to close the gap between their bodies, and simply stand together. While this would not be entirely unusual for a mare of Tiamat’s inhibition, she finds herself bashful—her head begins to tuck in towards her chest, shy. However, (mercifully, perhaps) the sudden crashing of branches and twigs startles her. White eyes widen and her muscles tense, though her affectionate smile soon returns when she recognizes Mesec’s newest companion. “And Lyra!” Tiamat laughs, lowering her head to gently nudge the young kitsune.

From the small pool of water she had found, Nimue chirps a high-pitched whistle to their friends. Having submerged herself in the cool water, the little orca darts in a circle before leaping into the air, carrying a spray of droplets with her when she glides back to where Tiamat stands. Crooning a hello to the stallion, the majority of the Leviathan’s attention is focused on Lyra, her baby blues wide with curiosity.

Tiamat, nearly glowing with blissful contentment, sweeps her gaze across the landscape. “It really is,” she sighs in response to Mesec’s observation. As with all the other territories within Helovia, the Hidden Falls has its own unique beauty—one that the mare is unlikely to forget. “I’ve never been here before…I had meant to visit when it had been a herd land, but I was never able to make it,” she murmurs with the slightest bit of sadness behind her tone (because the Earth God shouldn’t have had to abandon his people), before briefly turning her eyes from the scenery to the stallion.

“Who knew there could be so many waterfalls in one place!” Tiamat laughs again, marveling at all of the misty rainbows that frame each cascade, as though outlining the rise and fall of the mountainsides. She can’t help but smile when she swallows herself in nature—where everything is beautiful and full of life, and there are no barbaric monsters to worry about. Quick to push any thoughts of that thing aside, she leans closer to the stallion. “Have you been here before?” Tiamat questions him eagerly, suddenly realizing that other than his children and the Edge, she knows very little about Mesec.

Mesec’s smile had already been bright, but the warm greeting from Tiamat deepened it further - she moved her muzzle against his when he had been just intending to nudge her shoulder in greeting. Again the affectionate actions of the blue mare surprised him but he took delight in it now - inhaling the now-familiar scent. He wanted to linger there in that moment where they touched but she tucked her head in towards her chest and before either of them could say or do anything else, the thunderous arrival of Mesec’s youngest (and smallest) companion interrupted them.

Lyra had moved with speed and certainly had no care for grace in her excitement to see Tiamat and Nimue again. She yipped delightfully - pride and delight shining in her violet eyes as she got a special greeting from the blue lady. A high-pitched whistle drew their attention to the nearby pool of water and Mesec smiled as Nimue appeared - Tiamat certainly had a companion like no other. “Hello Nimue.” He called out in a gentle voice to the whale and Lyra warbled the same sentiment, leaping and rolling around on the ground - wondering if the pretty whale would be interested in a game.

Mesec’s attention returned to Tiamat when she answered his question - revealing that she too had never been here before. A day spent in her company would have certainly been pleasant anyway, but he enjoyed the idea that they might explore a bit of the Falls together - if she wouldn’t mind his company.

Tiamat’s voice by his side beckoned him to turn his head to look at her, smiling faintly as he answered  “I used to live here, actually... but that was before it was the Hidden Falls and when it was the Windtossed Foothills. When I was just a young colt.” His gaze shifted away - back to the waterfalls and the trees, still trying to see if there was anything that remained - and his voice quieted with the memory, his smile fading as he recalled the reasons that had tugged him out of the herd there. “The mountains here crumbled when the wraiths and their sickness took over Helovia and I haven’t been back here since.” So much had changed for Mesec at that time, the family that he had thought he had became scattered and he had been without direction.

But he caught himself before he could drift away on dark memories and angled his head so he could look at Tiamat, his smile easily returning with her presence. “Were you in Helovia then? When we all had to live in the caves by the Heart?” Just as she was curious about him, he wondered about her as well. Had she been in Helovia back then, had they wandered in those caverns at the same time - not knowing that one day they would be friends? Granted, he had been pulled away from the caves by his mother but there had still been that time when he was a young face among the crowds.

Look at the stars,
look how they shine for you.
And everything you do.

The ocean mare watches with a warm smile while her companion greets the kitsune. Nimue chirps happily, bobbing her head up and down, and trilling in excitement when Lyra leaps across the ground, inviting a game. The dark blue whale rolls backwards in a back flip before she floats after the dark fox, reaching with her round lips to tug gently at one of the kitsune’s multiple tails in play. The oceanic markings along the orca’s side glow brightly in her delight, highlighting the pleasure that mirrors her bondmate’s expression.

Tiamat hums amusingly to herself, ever aware of the tall stallion’s presence at her side. Both of her dainty ears are quick to rotate in his direction when he begins to speak, answering her own inquiry about his history with this beautiful land. The words he speaks are not what she had been expecting. The blue Lady had no idea that the Hidden Falls used to be called the Windtossed Foothills, or that this valley used to be mountainous at one time, and—perhaps worse of all—that there used to be wraiths that haunted Helovia.

There is so much of this world’s history that she still doesn’t know!

Unsurprisingly, the sea maiden finds herself with a lack of words. “The mountains crumbled? She echoes softly, her gaze sweeping momentarily across the various levels of waterfalls and little woodland cloves, trying to imagine the mighty power that would be able to accomplish such a task—and why. Why level the mountains? But that is not all— “Sickness? Wraiths? She nearly stutters, her ears flicking back in a brief moment of uneasiness. How could a sickness reign so terribly, that everyone was forced underground?

The very idea is difficult to wrap her fragile, sheltered mind around.

Her attention returns to Mesec, and she shakes her head slowly. “No, I wasn’t. It sounds like it was a frightening time though,” her velvety lips twist into a half-hearted grin, white eyes still wide with the trepidation of imagining the horror that it must’ve been. Almost unconsciously, the Ocean’s Light shifts herself closer to the dark stallion, finding comfort in his presence and boyish charm. “I didn’t even know this place used to be the Windtossed Foothills—or have mountains,” she laughs once, breathless, as she gazes out again across what is now the Hidden Falls. “Why did they fall? Why were there wraiths?” There are so many questions that leap to her lips, she finds it hard to bridle her curiosity.

Tiamat isn’t sure how long it is that she stares out across the picturesque view, but eventually her eyes flicker again to Mesec, her weight shifting more comfortably. “Shortly after I first came to Helovia, the sky went dark. That’s why I left—to search for my mother,” she smiles softly. Despite the terror that it had been so have her whole world trapped in an endless night, she can remember vividly the joy she had felt when her mother sky had returned again—brighter and more vibrant than ever. “I returned a few years ago, I’m not sure how long it’s been exactly. I’ve always called the Basin home though,” Tiamat sighs wistfully, looking to the stallion out of the corner of her eye.

Tiamat’s reactions to his short story about how the Windtossed Foothills had turned into the Hidden Falls was certainly answer enough to his question about whether she had been in Helovia at the time. He cannot help but smile, a small and sweet smile, at how she echoed the most terrible of the words he had spoken - utter surprise and shock clear in her expression. Perhaps he shouldn’t have brought it up, if it would distress her to hear of those darker times. She shifted a little closer to him and, in response, he shifted his wing slightly - pushing it out from his body just enough to brush lightly against her side in a silent reassurance that, though they make speak of them, those times were in the past.

But, she was curious about those times as well - asking a few questions, and Mesec only wished that he had more answers for her. “I don’t know why… same reason why any of the strange and sometimes terrible things happen to Helovia - good and bad magic seems to be drawn to this place. But I think the sickness that infected the horses that became wraiths affected the lands as well - and maybe that’s why the mountains crumbled. I think that was when the marshes in the south died as well…” Of course, not something else was living in that land, though it still had looked as bleak as ever even after the work of so many Helovians to clean it up.

Mesec didn’t really want to worry about Kaos right at this second, however. “It seems to all be gone now, though.” He added, with an encouraging smile.

He got a little bit of Tiamat’s story as well - how she had been in Helovia years ago (he imagined she must have been quite young, as she did not look much older than him) and left, only to return again a few years ago. Her wistful sigh at the mention of the Basin warmed his silver eyes as he looked to her. “I’m a little jealous of how connected you are to the Basin. I’ve never felt like that towards any of the herds. I’ve lived in them all, at one point in my life, but they never really felt like home.” It was a fact that had troubled Mesec quite a lot in his past, though he tried to sound casual about it now.
