Our chief want is someone who will inspire us
to be what we know we could be

Gone. Gone. Gone.

The word repeats itself over and over in his mind, matching pace with the throbbing pain in his skull. Was it from his magic? Was it from the seemingly endless flow of tears? He didn't know just how long he'd laid there beside her but her body was cold and the sun was quite a bit lower in the sky by the time they left. If he'd had a choice, he wouldn't have left - it would have been far easier to simply lay beside her and hope for death to come take him too. But he wasn't alone. He had their babies to think of and it hadn't escaped his notice that she hadn't gotten the chance to feed them. The mere thought of her missing out on being a mother yet again was enough to rip his heart to shreds all over again.

All they'd wanted was a family.

It seemed a simple request at the time. A request that they'd been denied not once, but twice. Merialeth wasn't very old when she suddenly disappeared without a trace and now December was gone. Gone. Bright blue eyes are rimmed with red, his whole face feels puffy and sore but still he gathers the twins beneath his great white wings and heads south to the only place he knows they'll be safe. The Edge. At least, it used to be a safe place. It has been more than two years since he left the Edge. More than two years since he'd stepped hoof on their soil but that's where he last knew Alysanne to be. She is the only one he has left. She is the only one he can turn to for help. Everyone else he'd met had been predominantly acquaintances - most of them friendly - but in his sorrow he doesn't feel comfortable going to just anyone, not even Tiamat whom is one of the sweetest horses he's ever met.

There was no question in his mind. No hesitation.

His heart leads him south from the Frostbreath Steppe, doing everything he can to keep the foals close to his side. The journey wasn't a short one - he didn't want to exhaust them but still there was an urgency in his steps. They need to eat - their very survival depends on it. He ushers them along, fighting against the anxiety threatening to overthrow his sanity. As the border of the Edge creeps into view, he visibly relaxes - exhaling a sigh so deep his whole body seems to visibly deflate a bit. They'd made it, and certainly no worse off than they'd already been. But it isn't entirely over yet. His anxiety, though lessened significantly, is not gone in its' entirety. There is still the issue of finding a mare willing and able to nurse Fenyx and Vynter - a feat he worried would be near impossible. He had to hope, though, didn't he? He had to hope that at least one thing would fall into place.

Slowing to a halt several feet outside the distinct gate on the southeastern corner of the Edge herd lands, he gestures for both of them to stop as well. "We must wait here." he murmurs, his deep voice rather coarse from the outpouring of his emotions not long ago. He reaches down to touch his muzzle gently to each of theirs before lifting it once more to gaze at the gated entrance. A few moments pass before he releases a rather hoarse yet loud whinny but he doesn't rely on that alone. Eliana has been resting not far away, attempting to hide away from the agony coursing into her through their bond. Ellie, check the Edge... please. We need to find Aly. Though the bird does not respond, a few moments later he spies her dark shape soaring over the glass spikes that now serve as the wall around the Edge. He trusts her but his anxiety seems to grow once again as he waits. Somehow he manages to stand still and strong for the twins; a miracle, if one ever existed.

You hadn't wanted to leave the grey one. She appeared to be sleeping and Miykael had insisted that you go. So despite your reservations, in your mind your instincts drove you to follow him It was with great persistence and energetic curiosity that you managed to keep pace with this man. There would be times where you would lose balance and fall, or fall behind because of some new interesting thing. Yet you would get right back up and keep trotting on, because there was much to see in this big wide world. Keeping to the golden patched man's left side, your icy eyes were intent to figure out where you three were going.

You didn't know how Sister felt about any of this, but she was still also very new, and exciting. She had shared a womb with you for nearly three seasons, that was enough reason for you to be greatly infatuated with her. She was different, a bright smattering of reds and browns that combined to make an almost reverse patched babe. She was pretty too, but not at all like the grey lady. She would always be the prettiest in you mind. You continued to think of her as they continued to meander, before the smell of salt wafted in your tiny ivory nostrils. With a short squeak you ambled ahead, only looking back to see if Miykael would refuse for you to go further.

Only when you reached the very edge of the glass wall did his muzzle rest against yours. Blowing a quick bout of air at him you studied his face, his red rimmed eyes and hollow expression. He had been like this since you all had left the grey lady behind. He seemed very sad that she was unable to come with. Yet not a moment after his gentle correction did he lift his head and call out, causing you to look ahead with curious eyes. He was calling someone to you. Who were you going to meet next? Before you could stop yourself you too, were calling out. It was high and short in length, a soft whine compared to his coarse roar. Yet you didn't mind, you felt rather accomplished... that was until an interesting creature caught your attention.

" Oh!" you crooned, before instantly making your way over the wall and promptly following Miykael's companion.

Ever since coming to Helovia, Alysanne had been used to seeing companions appear and beckon her to follow them. It wasn’t quite an everyday experience - but it happened often enough that she learned to keep an eye out for any movement while she was going about her day.

But there were some companions she just didn’t expect. So when a bright, familiar looking bird caught her attention while she was grazing - she didn’t know quite what to do. “Eliana?” The name of the pretty zephyr slipped out of Alysanne in such a quiet whisper, she wasn’t even sure if she had spoken aloud or if it had merely been a thought. Soon after it came another name, spoken just as quickly as Alysanne tried to figure out if this was some sort of dream. “Mikey?”

But then reality slammed into her and, though she and her oldest friend had left things off on good terms, fear pushed her into movement. She raced towards the borders of the Edge - mind whirling with all sorts of fearful outcomes. What could have brought him back here? What could have caused him to get his companion to seek her out instead of finding her himself? “MIKEY!” His name, the affectionate nickname that she used so often before - not the awkward way she had spoken his full name the last time they spoke - ripped from her when she finally spotted him. There was a foal as well, and normally Alysanne would have paused, but her attention was on her friend - her green eyes searching him over, grieving for the distress he seemed to be in. So she hurried over to the metal gate, the only entrance into the Edge where it was nestled among the dangerous spikes, and eased to a stop before Miykael. “What is it? What can I do?” Her voice was rushed and quiet.

Hemlock was already moving in the opposite direction - searching for anyone that he could bring to the border. From his experience, the meetings between Alysanne and Miykael rarely went well. So he sought out someone anyone - hopefully a friend of Aly’s but he wound settle on a neutral acquaintance. Anything so that they wouldn’t be alone together.  Especially while he was looking so upset - everyone knew that was Aly’s weakness.

Rexanna

Rexanna had hoped for a quick little escape from the cave, as she moved about the forests of the Edge. A strange feeling of happiness and excitement blossoming in her chest since Safiri had begun to grow so much. Still, the poor child was plagued with issues when it came to travel and exertion, but despite those things, the child was beautiful and getting older before her eyes. This extent was intended to be nothing more than stretching her legs, and perhaps a small bath to get the little marks of dirt that lined her knees off, but as she continued her walk and search, a familiar form came cascading through the trees.

Hemlock broke through the tree-line in what appeared to Rexanna as a frenzy. “Hemlock? What’s wrong?” She called out before the bird turned its course and headed back to Alysanne. Immediately Rexanna diverted her course and plans for the day, wondering if something had happened to her Queen and friend. Worry gleamed in her icy eyes as she galloped after the owl, heading toward the entrance to the herd, uncertain of what things she might find in doing so.

As she approached the gate, she slowed, slipping out from the metal as she began to catch her breath. Alysanne was there, and seemingly fine, as was a man she recognized who had actually healed her of the Labyrinth’s disease from the Rift wars, yet a man whom she still didn’t know his name. A frown immediately found her lips as her gaze traveled from Miykael to the foals that had accompanied. Concern caused her brows to furrow as she approached Alysanne’s side. “Can I help?” She questioned quietly into the air, stepping slightly closer to the pair of foals.

She was still producing milk, and if it was a meal these foals needed, Rexanna was able to provide it. Still, she glanced around in case a mother might show, patiently waiting for direction on what to do.

Our chief want is someone who will inspire us
to be what we know we could be

None of them wanted to leave December behind. Not a single one. Fenyx, however, put up the biggest fight. The girl had passion, that's for sure, and she likely inherited his emotional nature - something he wasn't really ready to face just yet. Vynter followed along a bit easier but the boy seemed to take after his mother emotionally. He is a curious boy, though rather aloof - his brain seemingly geared more towards logic than emotion. Both of them are still so young it's difficult to discern what their personalities truly are and with his judgment rather clouded from sorrow, he can't be certain of anything. This was all new to him, just as it was new to them. Miykael has never been left to care for foals by himself, at least not without a mare to bring them back to when they get hungry.

As the trio approach the gate, both foals respond to his touch and stop alongside him. The girl safely tucked beneath his wing and the boy seemingly wanting to explore but listening to him anyway. His nose lingered briefly on Vynter's, feeling the warmth of the colt's breath on his nose and offering the slightest smile. Miykael is trying to be strong, trying to keep himself together but he's constantly hovering around the line of 'holding it together' and 'complete breakdown'. All it would take is one wrong word or thought and he'd be a puddle again. How is he supposed to do this? How is he supposed to keep going? His call, no matter how hoarse it was, rings true across the land. He has no doubt that someone has heard him and everything seemed to be going well... until Vynter saw Eliana soar over the wall. Suddenly the colt bolts, racing after the night bird as quickly as his newborn legs can carry him. In that instant, Miykael is suddenly riddled with anxiety. Fuck. Fuckfuckfuck FUCK! is all that seems to run through his brain. "VYNTER, NO!" he shouts after the boy, hoping against all hope that he stops and comes back. That boy will probably be the death of him.

Miykael's gut twists as he watches the boy disappear. 'Vynter followed you. Watch him Ellie, please. Keep him safe.' he pleads through their bond, And though he is stilll anxious, he knows he can trust her. It takes everything he has to stand still, to keep himself from pacing. He has to hold it together for Fenyx. He has no choice. But his panic causes him to zone out a bit, to stare blankly at the gate in front of them while unspeakable images race through his mind. Miykael hears her first but it isn't until he squeezes his eyes shut and opens them that he sees her. And he almost breaks down right then and there. Alysanne is clearly concerned as she approaches and her questions are soft, so soft. "It's... their mother... she..." died he thinks, but he can't say it. Miykael fumbles over his own words, fighting to hold back the tears that threaten to fall once again. And his face, his whole face just hurts. Everything hurts. Red-rimmed blue eyes find crystal clear green. "I... I'm sorry. I just... didn't know where to go." he begins, feeling the familiar burn of tears moistening his sore eyes. The dunskin paint blinks rapidly a few times, allowing a single tear to escape.

He longs to move closer, to fall to pieces in her embrace but he (barely) resists. "I couldn't save her." his voice wavers with his confession. The words are another blow to his already broken heart. Miykael had been so focused on Aly that he didn't notice the golden mare's approach. As his gaze shifted to her, he recognized her instantly from the Rift battles - she was one of the many he'd healed. "December didn't get a chance to feed them. Do you know of anyone that could..?" he asks, hopeful but desperate at the same time. He knew they wouldn't stand a chance if they couldn't find a lactating mare willing to help.

Just like fire, burning up the way
If I can light the world up for just one day

Fenyx was even more resistant when he made the decision for them to move on. The grey one hadn't responded, hadn't opened her eyes but the girl was ever so certain that she was only sleeping. Obviously, the mare is just a heavy sleeper, right? Fenyx fought as hard as she could, squealing and skittering away from the golden one but her refusal to move too far from the grey one was her ultimate downfall (well, that and the fact that she wasn't even a day old). Her clumsiness landed her in tucked beneath his wing and though she tried to drag her hooves in the dirt, to avoid walking in some desperate attempt to stay here until mother wakes up; she eventually gives in. She simultaneously huffs in irritation and cuddles herself beneath the comfort of his massive wing.

She starts their journey off with a hefty dose of stubbornness, dragging her hooves and resisting the pace father attempts to set. So many questions swirl around in her head, leaving her lost and confused... and wanting her mother. A distinct growling noise seems to rumble from her tummy after the three of them travel some distance but it isn't the noise that causes her to pause, it's the discomfort accompanying it. The golden one, father, takes notice and frowns down at her. Worry creases his brow and anxiety squeezes his chest but these are things she does not know nor can she identify them. All she notices is the frown upon his face and she instantly fights to silence her own body. It isn't a fight she can win; involuntary reactions cannot be voluntarily silenced, but still she tries. Each rumble seems to distress her more, until the glass spikes come into view and provide her with a significant distraction.

Near the 'wall' of glittering spikes, the girl finally slips out from beneath his wing. As she moves closer, she reaches out her muzzle with the intent of touching the surface of the strange structure but father's immediate reprimand is enough to make her pull away... this time. Fenyx quickens her pace in an attempt to catch up to Vynter and father but by the time she reaches them she finds both standing outside another strange structure. Well, both of them briefly. Very briefly. By the time she slips beneath one of Miykael's wings to get a better view and possibly explore the gate barring their way, a dark creature catches her eye. She watches it for a moment as it disappears over the wall but by the time she shifts her amber gaze back down, Vynter bolts after the bird. Fenyx bleats at Vynter, hoping that would be enough to bring him back to her.

Yet, he doesn't turn around.
And so she simply pouts.

That is when things get interesting. A black and white winged mare races towards them, through the forests on the other side of the gate. Fenyx peers at her curiously, amber eyes clear and bright. Without really consciously meaning to, she shifts herself closer to father's leg - almost clinging to him as she tries to discern whether or not to trust this new pegasus. Frankly, it doesn't last long. Father seems to trust her. The red girl shifts away from his leg and takes a few steps closer, her small nostrils flaring as she inhales the new one's scent. She has wings, too, like daddy and soon the filly is bleating at the black and white mare as she practically bounces closer. Fenyx stretches out her neck, attempting to reach up and touch her soft nose to Alysanne's left wing. She can't help but wonder if wings are more common than not. Mother didn't have them but everyone else she's seen has.

Fenyx was completely immersed in examining the painted mare that she was almost surprised by the arrival of another mare. This one, however, gave her reason to pause. She had something long and seemingly pointy stuck to her forehead. Confused, the filly moves closer and as her eyes trail the length of the pointy thing, she suddenly finds something delicate and shiny. Strings and they seemed to dangle everywhere on the golden and white mare. The closer she gets, though, the more her attention is drawn elsewhere. A certain smell reaches her nostrils, a smell that pulls her attention to the gurgling growl of her stomach. But it doesn't just growl, it aches and something smells so good. She follows her nose to the source, shameless in her approach as she finds the golden mare's teat. She doesn't wait for father's question to receive an answer. The girl smells a food source and simply goes for it. As a newborn she has no idea of what the consequences might be or that her actions might not be welcome. She is a bundle of selfish instincts and there is no shame in that.

You were pleased with the amount of swiftness you had managed to contain despite being on unsteady legs. You were certain that if given more time, you might have actually managed to catch the feathered being. Yet it is the booming tone of the golden one that caused you to at once slow your pacing. He is distressed, anxious and tired. His words are borderline desperate, and despite your need to further explore; there is something within you that is commanding you to take heed. Letting small hooves slow down, you turned your head in his direction; waiting to see if anything else would be said. As you were about to return to his side you hear rustling from the brush before you, causing your ears to prick up curiously. Soon a woman of ebony and ivory came into view, standing tall and regally before you.

Yet she didn't seem to notice you, and instead rushed past in the direction of Miykael and Fenyx. Well now you had to follow. With as much gumption was a colt with one wing could, you hobbled/jogged off in the general direction she went. Soon you saw your family again, and with ease you brushed past the new female to reach Miykael. Looking into his bright eyes that matched your own you blinked, tilting your head curiously. He had needed something before. He had said no. What did it mean? But before you could think too much of it, he was talking, and you were certain it was about the grey one. December. She had a title now. December the grey one. Elated with this newfound discovery you cheerfully bleated, before looking to the black and white brightly," December! December goodbye."

So lost in this revelation you failed to notice the golden beauty approaching the group. She was slim, and unlike the majority no wings were splayed across her back. You were fascinated by the horn protruding from her skull, long and elegant with a pointed end. The trinkets that hung around her body were also distracting, even to Fenyx. Eyes of crystal looked over the mare once again, until the scent came across your senses. December had had the same smell on her when they first came into the world, and although she had been much more inviting; your instinctive need was driving you to investigate. Slipping to the open side of the dam quietly, your nose found the edges of her hip, before slipping down against her stomach and finding her warm teat. Your twin was already helping herself, leaving you to study the scene for a moment, before finally beginning to suckle yourself.

Her heart was already breaking for him when he couldn’t get out the word to explain what had happened to to the mother. Reassurances died on her tongue, unable to make their way out. She wouldn’t tell him that it was okay because how could it be? He was so far away from being okay as he stood before her and she could only imagine what the pain was that he was going through. Her friend was a healer, a guardian angel, and not being able to save December…

He didn’t move towards her, but she took a cautious step towards him - reaching out with a dark muzzle to touch him briefly on his cheek, a soft echo of the fond greetings they once shared, as she spoke gently. “I’m so sorry, Mikey.”

She stepped backwards, enough room to give him space, and was then greeted by the small filly by his side. She’s red, beautiful shades that remind Alysanne of autumn and fire, and she bleated out a greeting of her own. A small smile lights in Alysanne’s eyes and she stayed completely still as her wing was inspected by a soft, curious nose. The ache in her heart, meanwhile, deepened - thinking of this girl (and her brother) growing up without a mother.

Speaking of the colt - he returned to the group, Alysanne feeling foolish when he brushed passed her and she realized she must have missed him entirely on the other side of the glass spikes. So consuming had her desire been to reach Miykael that she had not paused to consider anything else. The colt parroted the name that Miykael spoke, speaking in cheerful tones that only made Alysanne feel worse. These foals were too young to have such a tragedy happen to them - too young to even understand what had happened.

Hemlock soared over her head, his agitation and worry keeping him from landing, and soon Rexanna joined the group. The presence of someone else encouraged Alysanne to focus on the problem at hand. But before Alysanne can start to ask Rexanna if she knew anyone in the herd that might be nursing, the foals had picked up that the golden mare herself was producing milk. They flocked to Rexanna in a heartbeat and a small wave of relief flooded over Alysanne. “I think Rexanna might be able to help?” She grinned at the golden mare - reaching out to nudge her softly on the shoulder in thanks - and the two foals that were giving her special attention.

Her attention then drifted back to Miykael, now that the immediate needs of the foals were being taken care of. Though her smile faded, her face was soft and welcoming - whatever history lay between them, she had no hesitations about what to do now. “You’re all welcome here for as long as you’d like.” She would help him through this, if he would let her.

December didn’t get a chance to feed them. Do you know of anyone that could…?” Rexanna’s frown immediately deepened at the idea of foals without a mother, providing them with the thing they needed most to survive. In fact, she was surprised they had made it this far. As she began to open her mouth to speak, she paused when the foals began to move toward her. At first, it seemed like they knew and it relieved Rexanna as their instincts drove them right beneath her. When Alysanne’s words reached her ears, a soft smile crossed her pale muzzle as she readjusted her stance to better fit the twins beneath her to eat.

Her gaze then looked over to Miykael, trying to offer a reassuring smile and a nod. As Alysanne tells Mikey and the children they could stay, Rexanna nodded along happily as well. “I’m willing to help for however long you need me.” She finally said, her reassuring smile growing slightly larger. “In fact I have a daughter that’s got a slight health problem that could use some friends and outward interaction other than myself and her father.” She admitted with a slightly awkward laugh.

Then, she sat back and waited, allowing the children however long they needed to eat all while observing the events at hand. She wondered what happened to December, and who the mare even was. Though she didn’t dare say the thoughts out loud. She’d remain quiet, allowing the poor grief stricken man to say whatever he felt necessary, entirely without judgement.
