Safiri ♛

The princess had been determined to find what her magic wanted, had let it reach in a desperate attempt to find out just want it was asking for, but only turned up empty handed and frustrated. She could only scour for so long before the fatigue hit her, her heart racing and her head twirling atop her neck; she would lay herself against the cold stone and wait for her heart to ease, for the aches to stop and the world to come back into focus. Often, before that could even happen, Safiri will have fallen asleep.

She sets out for the outside again, going in baby steps this time, rather than leaping and bounding into the swirling mists without taking into consideration the condition her heart is in. It's step by step, each day going a little farther, pacing herself as she moves away from the entrance of the cave and into the scattered pines that loom over the Edge. Today, her magic picks over the familiar landscape, having already been over the materials presented to it in the past few days as she walks carefully on the path she's worn. The lamb grows hopeless the longer it drags on, walking on despite having long since past the point she had planned to stop; midnight dipped legs tremble, unable to hold her up any longer, and she finds herself exactly where she had been only a little while before - leaning up against a tree, with her head drifting off and her lungs never quite taking in enough air, little heart beating against her chest as it works furiously to circulate all the blood in her body.

Safiri decides to remain slumped against the tree until her body ends its aching and she doesn't feel like she's floating ten feet off the ground, glittering green looking down at her onyx hooves as she takes in deep breaths. If she doesn't get back soon, her mother may begin to worry, and the princess doesn't want to do that to her gilded dam, ushering her heart to start working the way it should so she can get back quickly.

The Elephant is, now, a hovering father. Where, before, he could not be as present in his young daughter’s life, he now is a watchful and attendant man; deep navy eyes fluidly fluctuating from deepest concern to buoyant jubilation with each setback or success young Safiri had against her poor health.

Today, however, it is Mbwene that quietly follows the gilded ivory princess. The wrinkled grey matriarch aimlessly shuffles through the underbrush, keeping a distance with a relaxed face offset by an hawk-eye stare that never leaves Safiri. ’Saf tired,’ was her single, lone thought to the ever-present, worried force that was Tembovu through their bond.

So the Elephant leaves his place with Rexanna, a brisk walk of long and ebony-stained limbs bringing him to his companion. Though his thick limbs do not stop alongside the small elephant—nor does he cast her a glance; no, his entire attention is focused on the small, porcelain girl whose skin is slumped against the rough bark of a tree.

Great head drops the moment he reaches his daughter, muzzle gently reaching out and aiming to brush against the slender ribs (—always checking for a heartbeat—) where her white marking met her shoulder. Flared, dark nostrils quickly breath in the sweet foal-scent of his sweetling child;

“Where are you going, binti?” despite the relaxed manner of his deep rumble, the Elephant could not entirely hide the worry that lined and clouded his black-marked face. Though he knew his daughter needed to get out of their cave-home, after watching his daughter struggle from birth, the paternal concern would never leave.

Her innate sense of curiosity has her scrounging for material for her newfound magic. Safiri has found it increasingly difficult to come upon ivory, which is of no surprise to her considering she was limited to searching beneath the cover of mist wrapped pines - whatever animals roam through here will probably be the least likely to have any piece of ivory on their body. And how does the lamb plan to get that ivory in the first place? Will she wrestle an elk for an ivory tooth? She thinks not, so her chances are even less; she will have to search for a body, which makes her stomach twist at the thought of having to scavenge and pick at the crumbling corpse of some poor animal.

Her nose shrivels at the thought, as her steps slow and her mind grows hazy, full of tire and less excited about finding something more for her magic to form. Safiri so easily recalls the brightening moments in the cave, when her magic had crawled forward to the ivory tooth Marembo had brought and pulled, stretched until Safiri had crafted a small, intricate ivory buffalo that responded to her commands, never freely roaming. Her first command was for it to follow, and it did just that. The small buffalo paraded behind her, sometimes slower than she with its petite legs and bulky body, racing forward to catch up to the panting princess.

It finds her slumped against a tree, heaving as her head twirls atop her neck and her joints are aching, numbed by the lack of blood flowing through them. She looks down to her golem, watches as it stands by her side tentatively, still and silent as she catches her breath. Her shoulder is itching against the tree, bark tearing at delicate skin and a fair coat, dirt and grime smearing against her sweaty sides and prying open her golden skin. Safiri can barely feel it, the scrapes are barely enough to arouse her interest as she focuses on breathing, black tipped ears swiveling as she hears heavy steps. Her crowned head is swinging as fast as it can, frantic and afraid, heart thundering faster than it could manage before her eyes can glide over the familiar bulky figure of her father. She smiles modestly, tilting her head so he can't catch the fading of her panic.

A soft touch brings her attention back to him, head craning to look up at the Elephant King. He addresses her gently, as soft as the touch to her heaving side, and her green eyes are twinkling. The King had always been busy with maintaining order within the Edge, but now that he had chosen to step down, he had been allowed more time - Safiri was overjoyed with this, but realized that all her time was spent in a cave, a cave that seemed far too cramped and suffocating once he stepped foot in it, with his giant stature he made the cave feel small, as small as the heart throbbing in her chest. "Baba, I was looking for ivory." She glances to the miniature buffalo by her hooves, "I made that! Auni! Hapa, she beckons the golem forward to present to her father, looking up at him with spring green shining, full of pride at her work. "Isn't it so pretty?" Safiri has studies Auni's figure a thousand times over, has each detail and fault of its design imprinted into her mind; she had the time to do it, with her life being confined to her cave, sitting by the entrance where it was brightest to study Auni. She admired her own handiwork, but also critiqued it. The princess felt that the geometrical carvings in the buffalo's horns could be worked upon, seeing the mistakes in the notches and grooves, knowing that nearer to the tip they began to falter, less intricate and more of a hassle of cluttered lines. She knows that already chips and scratches have marred the off white of Auni's side from its walks with her.

Safiri looks back to her father, disheartened by her failed search for ivory. She lets out a weary huff, heart steadily returning to its soft beats rather than the fatigued, rapid thundering that always left her breathless and dizzy. "Ivory is impossible to find!" She sighs, kicking at the dirt beneath her midnight hooves hopelessly, now she was focused on resting and returning to her cave rather than scrounging for material for her magic. Despite being interested in creating another golem, she was left with nothing. Perhaps later Safiri could ask her mother to send Marembo out to find more ivory teeth, since she couldn't do it herself.
