let the winds erase me,

like the memory of a kiss

She’s elated after her time with the Basin’s healers. There’s something infectious and wonderful about the trio of horses. Though Tia was no longer a healing, and Lyanna hadn’t actually met their third Time Mender, if she was being precise. Still, she can’t help but be pleasantly surprised at how well their lesson had gone. Not that she had expected to find cold, cruel healers in the North just because they lived in a much colder place. She just hadn’t entirely known what to expect, having had very little interaction with those from the Basin. She’d only spent a bit of time with Tiamat in the Threshold, and that’s not much to go on, though Tia was the same there as she was here.

When they are done, she sets off to find Glasgow, permission given from Tia and the other healers for her to linger and visit with her friend. It was high time they caught up, and already Lyanna can see what might have brought Glasgos here. It’s beautiful in its own way, far different from the Edge, but still beautiful. Even in the heat of Tallsun, the weather is pleasant, though she can’t quite imagine what Frostfall here is like. Nor does she want to find out, if she’s being perfectly honest.

She doesn’t go too far, instead trying to stick to the path between the greenhouse and the entrance, because she doesn’t want to just wander around without an escort. Even though she has permission, it feels rude. This is not her home, and she is a guest, and she intends to behave like one. Instead, she hopes that Glasgow will find her, or someone who’s seen the pale mare recently. Or could point Lyanna in the right direction. After all, she has no idea where Glasgow hangs out here. This isn’t the Edge, after all, and all the things that once might have been true don’t hold true now.

Set after this thread, so she has permission to stay and talk to Glasgow. If someone wants to escort her to find Glasgow, that is totally cool, because she feels super awkward, haha :)

sweet bitter words, unlike nothing I have heard:

Who that? Duir asks, stopping to look over at the greenhouse, which I’d been making my way passed. Having taken to checking the caves around the realm from time to time after hearing that one of our own had laid in a coma for at least a season without notice, I don’t care about not having it happen again so much as I appreciate the time alone.

The breeze, pleasant at the height of the afternoon, tugs my dark forelock down across my cheek as I follow his stare towards where the pegasus is standing. Unsure exactly who she is, I shrug.

Someone who doesn’t live here, I tell him, before heading her way.

"Hey, can I help you with something?" like, showing you where the door is? my voice intones, despite the otherwise pleasant expression on my face, including the faintest traces of a smile; sure she’s not this far in without permission (or, if she is, what a fun day for me), I’m not immediately hostile, simply aloof, and a bit cold.

She doesn’t seem hurt, I think to myself, looking her over, my buck mentally agreeing with me, from where he’s stayed back towards my hindquarter, and watches the winged mare with a curious expression.

It was another day where Glasgow felt the need to visit the Greenhouse she so carefully crafted so many seasons ago. The world around her was beautiful, and it rubbed off on the scarred mare. She had bathed more frequently, ate better, even had a glimmer of happiness that lightened up her glassy eyes from her permanently gaunt face. She felt like she could live again, breathe again, just simply be herself without fear of anyone getting weirded out by her. The crafting cave helped in that aspect as well, since she had a way she could hide away when she felt the need to instead of sleeping at an awkward schedule to simply appease her herd mates.

But when the sun glimmered on the greenhouse and Glasgow squinted as she approached, she didn’t notice her close friend among the space between. It wasn’t until she approached after giving the Greenhouse a quiet and cheery hello to the day as she did when she passed typically, that she noticed the familiar teal tinged edges of a very curious face. A wide grin spread across Glasgow’s features, the scars moving and accentuating her smile even more as she bounded up to her friend, aiming to press her soft grey muzzle into the feathers of the mare’s shoulder, where her wing and body collided.

Oh Lyanna! What a surprise to see you here!” She exclaimed, her eyes seeking the gaze of her friend, wondering if she’d notice how much the old woman had changed. “Have you come to make sure I’m behaving myself?” She asked with a wiggle of her eyebrow and a small giggle.

It was then when she noticed Rikyn, and how she missed him was something beyond her. “Oh I’m so sorry I didn’t see you there! This is Lyanna, she’s a great friend of mine from the Edge.” She began, her smile returning to her frightening features.

let the winds erase me,

like the memory of a kiss

It’s not long before someone finds her, but not the someone she is looking for. He seems less than pleased to find her wandering around alone, and she doesn’t even blame him. Instead she offers the stallion and the cerndyr a smile and a nod. “Actually, I am looking for my friend, Glasgow, and I would be forever grateful for some help. I was just with Tia, Lena and Mortuus and they said it would be okay if I stayed to see her.” She hopes that’s explanation enough, and she tries to keep a welcoming look on her face which is easy enough. This is his home, and he is more than welcome to accompany her in whatever direction. She’s not about to argue.

But then, before she can even introduce herself, there’s a familiar figure coming their way. Lyanna’s teal eyes light up as she catches sight of Glasgow bounding in her direction. The pale mare greets her with a touch of her nuzzle to Lyanna’s shoulder, and her smile turns into something of a giant grin. “Glasgow,” she says warmly, reaching out to touch her friend on the neck if the other will allow it.

Then she draws back, taking in the mare and how happy and healthy she seems. Though Lyanna always finds herself missing the scarred ex-Glazier, seeing Glasgow looking so good makes the pain of missing her diminish. If this is the life her friend wanted and needed, then Lyanna was glad for her. “I have indeed come to make sure you aren’t causing too much trouble without me.” She says with a wink, as if either of them were troublemakers. Because what she is really here for is simply to make sure her friend is happy and safe.

Her attention turns back to include Riykn as well, feeling terrible for ignoring his presence while she greeted her friend. But Glasgow was one of the few in Helovia Lyanna trusted completely, and she couldn’t quite bring herself to be selfless when it came to getting to visit with her friend. She gets a little wrapped up in their conversations sometimes.

sweet bitter words, unlike nothing I have heard:

She’s looking for Glasgow, she tells me, and my eyebrows go up with recognition at the name; it takes me a minute to remember who she is, though, having met so many new people in the past weeks, and, when the memory of the scarred woman who’s back I’d held at the mouth of the crafter’s cave finally rises to mind, I nod. Though I know the others – Tia and Lena being friends, and Mortuus, a tentative adversary, as we had never, at least by my experience, gotten along, but tolerated one another – I figure its best to know exactly who she’s looking for, if I’m to be much help to her, after all.

There is not much of a pause between her explanation and the arrival of the pale woman herself, however, and she arrives to the gathering as if I’m not here. Lifting my head and watching the ongoing interaction between the mares with the sort of expression that reveals the truth of the matter (I’m offended). Even when being ignored comes with an offhand “I didn’t see you there!” from a woman who might actually not have (her eyes are scarred, after all, which perhaps did affect her vision), I find it hard to remove the frown from my face, despite the happiness which infects both of the women.

I’m not so cheerful all the time, unfortunately.

"Probably a good thing, Lyanna," I decide, after Duir gives me a mental poke (it’s my turn in the conversation, according to him, I guess), "I like trouble, most of the time. Wouldn’t stop her if I noticed."

Nodding my head in farewell, I turn to leave, deciding that I’d rather not hang out while they talk about hoof tinctures and mane conditioners… or whatever it is “gal pals” get all giggly about when they get together. I wouldn’t really know; the girls I’d spent the majority of my time around so far were, well, a little bit moody, at the best. They didn’t seem to have gaggles of friends, like some chicks seemed to, which suited me just fine – I didn’t have a lot of true friends, either. More like a thousand acquaintances, plus one, now that I've met this Lyanna of the Edge, too.

"I’ll leave you ladies to it then," I say with a smile, as I gladly return to my aimless wandering, lion’s tail curving slowly behind me; Duir gives them a last farewell glance of his own, and I shoot the cheeky wink and smirk of a shared joke towards Glasgow before departing, "I’ll be looking inside caves for unconscious unicorns if you need anything."

The greeting went well, it seemed to Glasgow, as Lyanna’s muzzle reached out for her neck. Standing tall and happily, the scarred mare allowed it, thankful to have a friend to talk to even if it was only for a short time. A brilliant smile grew on her scarred lips as they withdrew from one another and a wink was given from Lyanna. A small laugh escaped Glasgow’s lips breathlessly as she turned to look to Rikyn as they allowed him a chance to speak in their conversation, his smile only emphasized Glasgow’s more as she nodded to her Lord.

A small nod of her head was given to Duir as well, until his words reached her ears and another small giggle escaped her lips. “Let me know if you need any help with that.” She beamed. Everything was looking up for her now, good relations with her lord and lady, as well as the start of friendships in this strange land. It was sparse enough, too, that she felt comfortable wherever she went. She figured if her herdmates were steadfast enough to deal with the intensive winters here, then her face wouldn’t be frightening to them in the slightest – though it was a silly thought in all honesty.

When Rikyn left, she turned to look at Lyanna with that same brilliant smile. “How have you been? How’s the Edge?” She questioned with a tilt of her head, some guilt growing in her chest at the way she had left them when it seemed they really needed her. She hoped they had figured it out, gathered new glaziers and continued on.

let the winds erase me,

She laughs at Rikyn’s joke, though she suspects it’s not entirely a joke. He seems like he really might like trouble, though she doesn’t judge him for that particular bit of information. He is not quite like the others she’s met so far in the Basin, but then again, if everyone were sunshine and rainbows all the time, life would be pretty dull. He seems like a good kind of trouble, though, quickly excusing himself to leave them to it. Though she wouldn’t mind getting to know Rikyn, she’s admittedly glad to have some time to talk to Glasgow alone.

They do not talk about hoof tinctures and mane conditioners, as he may think. Lyanna has plenty of acquaintances with which to talk about nothing in particular, but Glasgow knows Lyanna better than the pretty smiles that constantly live on her face. Glasgow knows her heart, knows what those pretty smiles conceal. And she’s one of the only horses in Helovia she can really talk to. A thousand acquaintances and very few real friends. She knows that problem as well as Rikyn does.

He’s gone before she looks to Glasgow, adding, “How often are there unconscious unicorns in the caves around here?” laughing a bit with the question. She wonders too if they have anyone other than unicorns, given his choice of words. The Basin had opened their borders to others, but perhaps they had not changed much. She knows little of the history of this place.

Then Glas is asking the questions Lyanna doesn’t want to think about. She wants to pretend the past few weeks hadn’t happened at all, but then again, if there was anyone she could talk to, it was Glasgow. She couldn’t very well tell her herd that she wasn’t entirely sure she was equipped to lead them. “Tembovu stepped down,” she says first, letting that revelation sink in. Even if not everyone had agreed with all of Tembov’s choices, he’d led the Edge well for more years than Lyanna had lived there.

“He made me Queen. Me. I’ve lived in Helovia less time than he ruled. How am I supposed to follow him?” The words just sort of spill out, and it’s good just to have them off her chest. She doesn’t bring up that they are shy a glazier now as well, not wanting her friend to feel any guilt. She’d made the choice she needed to make for her own happiness, and that was all anyone could ask of her. Though Lyanna would have loved to stand as Queen with Glasgow on her side.

How often are there unconscious unicorns in the caves around here?” Lyanna asked with a hint of a laugh to her question, and Glasgow couldn’t help but to mirror the happiness. A small laugh escaping her own lips as she let her eyes land softly on her Pegasus friend, her best friend, with the hint of a teasing smile on her lips. “I was looking for the crafting cave – since they actually have a place like that here – and when I showed up, there was a unicorn that lived in it and the place smelled horrid. Rikyn showed up and offered his help to get the unicorn a new place to sleep while I figure out how to clean it.” She chuckled again with the explanation of the actions she’s taken since coming to the Basin.

But then the questions shifted to a more serious tone, Lyanna’s overall attitude seeming to grow quiet, as if the Edge had been changed, shifted, different, than it had been when she was there last. Raising an eyebrow slightly, yet saying nothing and quietly assuming, before her voice reaches her ears. After that one sentence, Glasgow’s scarred eyebrows began to furrow as a frown graced her lips. “Oh? I never thought he would, to be honest.” She offered quietly before Lyanna continued.

He made me queen. Me.” A look of surprise came over the scarred mare, her eyes widening though still glassy and milky white as she searched her friend’s face. She began to spill out her words, and Glasgow stretched out her muzzle to gently brush by Lyanna’s neck should she allow it for any sort of comfort. “That is a great honor, Lyanna.” She murmured, offering a small smile of comfort to the mare. “Obviously he saw something in you that you don’t see in yourself. Your kindness, dedication, your love for your herd. Sometimes being in a rank of power makes you lose your happiness, your drive. He had a large family, right? Perhaps he wanted to spend more time with them.” She began to mutter before looking over across the Basin. “Your family is the herd. Even if they don’t agree with you sometimes, and try to argue with your choices. That’s what family does. You, however, will make an amazing lead. I know it.” Her head shifted back toward her teal tinged friend with an even wider, consoling grin.

so i listen to the    wind for an answer
She listens as Glasgow recounts the tale of first finding the crafting cave, wrinkling her nose slightly in mock (and somewhat real) disgust. Unable to hold the silly face seriously for long, she breaks out into more laughter soon enough, a bit louder now. “It sounds like they are lucky to have a clean and tidy crafter now.” She wonders briefly what the other crafters of the Basin are like. If, like the healers and Glasgow, they are all as kind and pleasant as welcoming. There were, of course, many in the Basin she did not know, but her experiences here had always been pleasant, if not more than pleasant. Her friend’s choice to move here made sense, even if Lyanna would always be a little sad to have her friend so far away. But distance could not end their friendship.

Distance was simply a thing to be traversed, nothing more. Glasgow was one of the few Lyanna trusted so completely, possibly the only horse in Helovia that she felt comfortable enough with to be entirely herself. With Glas, Lyanna could lay herself bare and find truth, perhaps comfort. The pale mare’s reaction to Tembovu’s departure is the same as Lyanna’s, and she nods her head slightly in agreement. “I thought the same as well. He seemed like a permanent fixture in the Edge.” It was not the same place without him, but all she could hope was that she didn’t make it a worse place without him. Different, perhaps, but different was okay. She could feel successful if it became different, but thriving and successful still.

Glasgow’s touch is welcomed and it helps to alleviate some of the tension Lyanna feels. The pale mare’s words are even more comforting, and though somewhere in the back of her mind Lyanna had probably always known that Edge was her family, hearing it aloud makes it sink in finally. She nods, silent for a moment. “He has a new filly. Beautiful girl, but with a heart too weak to sustain her. I imagine he is much needed with his family now.” Not that she had seen him around much, but the Edge was still his home, and would always be his home should he choose. “Thank you,” she says quietly, hoping the words can convey just how thankful she really is. Hoping those few words can convey all the feelings she cannot find words for. “I never even imagined I would lead one day. It’s definitely overwhelming.”

Glasgow is right though, the Edge is Lyanna’s family. She would do her best not to fail this family as she had her first. “And how are you? Other than dirty caves, is the Basin treating you well?”
