She looked at the two leaders before turning and walking out of ear shot of the rest of the herd. She didn't want anyone else to hear what she had witnessed. Once she thought they were far enough away she halted and turned to face the much older horses. She wondered if her Apa would be mad that she had went somewhere he deemed dangerous alone. Was she about to get her ass chewed out? Sucking it up the filly pushed her nervous down with a deep breath. "I'm sorry to interrupt the fun, but I've been trying to find a time when you were both free and I couldn't pass this time up." She dipped her head apologetically before continuing.

"A while ago I went to the Spectral Marsh. I found a strange stone alter there with glowing symbols on it." She assumed they already knew that bit of information, but it was necessary to her story. "I was joined by Lady Amaris of the World's Edge, and a strange colt. We were talking about the alter while standing in front of it. Then the ground started shaking, no, it was vibrating." She could still remember the way her whole body had shivered along with the Earth. "You could feel it all the way in your bones. Then this teal liquid shot out of the top, it was the same color as the markings on the stone." She paused allowing that to all soak in.

"It looked like teal rain, but it kind of floated down, like a leaf. When it landed on me, it made me feel refreshed." Her scarlet eyes shimmered at the memory. "It was like getting the best nights sleep of your life." She lowered her head and opened the white tiger pelt sheath on her leg. "Where the liquid touched the ground these strange black clovers sprang up." She had carefully hidden some away in the sand, just in case they tried to confiscate all of it. She cautiously pulled the remaining clover from her sheath, making sure to leave her dagger in place. The girl made sure to night bite into the plants as she laid them between the Sultan and Sultana's hooves. "There are probably still some there if you would like the rest." She stepped back and looked up at them wondering if she had done well.

His daughter's presence at the party is enough to make grey hairs sprout in his dark onyx fur - what if she gets into the alcohol and gets drunk? What if a fermented-apple-addled colt gets carried away and makes an inappropriate move on her? The answer to the second one is fairly simple - smash the unlucky colt into pieces, or at least think strongly about doing so whilst reluctantly refraining thanks to his status as Sultan - but there's still so many things to worry about now Vezér is here.

He forces himself to relax, telling himself that the spiderweb girl is just here for a bit of fun and she's allowed to enjoy spending time with her herdmates. When she comes over to him and Ampere, he tilts his head towards her with interest, as surely it isn't cool to be seen with her father whilst there's others of her own age to socialise with? But it's soon obvious that the filly doesn't have joviality on her mind as she begins to speak. "Don't apologise, love. What's wrong?"

Her revelation at being in the Spectral Marsh is enough to make his eyes boggle out of his head, his protective-father-syndrome revving up into overdrive at the thought. He refrains from scolding her, though, knowing that whatever she wants to tell him and Ampere must be important. The knowledge that she was with Amaris is enough to relax his muscles somewhat, although he still doesn't like the idea of her in the Marsh without him or another warrior to protect her. The spiderweb girl continues, speaking of the ground shaking and a teal liquid erupting from the altar. This is deeply interesting, and the Indomitable looks over to Ampere as Vezér continues her story. He's picturing the liquid like some kind of volcanic eruption, yet the filly describes it as refreshing. How could anything associated with Kaos be considered good? The beast's brow is twisted into a frown, absorbing every one of his daughter's words as he tries to understand what has transpired.

The filly then places some black clovers at his feet, and he leans down to cautiously sniff them. "We should have one of the healers analyse these and see if they can determine what they are," he says to Ampere, careful not to crush the clovers with his massive hooves. He looks to his daughter then, extending his muzzle to try and touch it gently to her own. "Thank you for telling us this, Vezér. However, in future please do not go to the Marsh on your own. We have no idea what Kaos is planning, and going there by yourself is dangerous. Make sure myself or one of the warriors is with you whenever you go anywhere near the Marsh." He's already lost Vezér once, and the crippling grief of her faux-death had been horrendous. He does not want to go through that again if he can help it. The beast's voice is stern and firm, but gentle at the same time - her information could prove valuable and that's worthy of respect, but the father in him shudders at what could have happened to her.

The giant looks over to Ampere, keen to get her opinion on this new information. "We should gather a patrol and head to the Marshes once the party is over, see what we can find out." Waiting until tomorrow may be best, though - he doesn't fancy taking a gang of drunken Throatians into possibly dangerous territory.

Burning on the E D G E of something beautiful

Even when Ampere wanted to party, the serious nature of her position and the threat facing Helovia loomed over her. Vezer's shadow had danced over Ampere's form as the girl approached her by the crackling fire, and Ampere's good spirits and laughter had initially met the young girl where Ampere stood by the liquor trying to entice an underaged Arakh to partake. Yet when her blue gaze met that of the child's, and her ears flicked to catch the hushes words of invitation from the girl, Ampere's humor dissipated instantly, as if Vezer was a cleaver that had swung down.

Remembering her place, Ampere turned back to the small crowd that had gathered around the drinks and gave out a hearty laugh and a broad grin, goading someone else into drinking before slipping away to pee, as she said. No need to spoil the fun for the rest of the herd after all.

As soon as her back was to the party however Ampere's features eroded back into their serious lines, and she followed the girl and Volterra, surprised by his tenderness towards the filly (unaware at first it was his daughter). Ampere is mostly quiet, listening, eyes widening and nostrils flaring at times. At first a jolt of alarm runs through her to learn that the filly had been the marshes unaccompanied, and she slides a narrowed gaze towards Volterra when he doesn't initially broach the topic, because the mother in her, much less the Sultana, is itching to chastise the girl for ignoring one of their rules specifically designed to keep them all safe. This isn't her child though, so Ampere bides her tongue, relieved when Volterra eventually brings it up, surprised once more at the gentleness he displays for his child.

"We should have one of the healers watch over her as well," Ampere advised, her gaze suspicious as she listened to the refreshing tale the filly spoke. "She feels good now, but we know Kaos has used deception before. Perhaps it was really a curse, or an illness, one hidden with the promise of healing." She tries to say it quietly, talking mostly towards Volterra to whom she inclines her head, as she does not wish to needlessly frighten the child.

As she straightens up she offers the girl a smile, and dips her head. "Thank you very much for getting us Vezer. You're very clever to know this information cannot wait, and that is better not to be said in front of everyone. You've the makings of a Sultana." Ampere winked at her, honest, if not also purposefully trying to uplift the girl. "But yes please mind the herd rules next time and do not go out alone, we would hate for anything to happen to you."

As Volterra suggested they patrol tomorrow Ampere nodded. "Yes, we must let them have their fun tonight, but this cannot wait longer than a night. We also need to promote heads of the ranks if we're going to keep them organized and stop ourselves from being exhausted with constant meetings. I think we've had enough time to notice who is worthy of a promotion for almost all the classes."

She smiles kindly at her Apa's kind words as she apologizes for putting a weight on their shoulders. When she starts to talk about what had happened to her she watches her Apa. It's almost comical as the stallion stares at her with bulging eyes. She has to fight down a laugh and focuses her face to remain calm. Her eyes switch to Ampere wondering what's going through her mind. She notices the way her nostrils flare every once and a while and she can relate. Of course she hadn't been scared when the teal liquid had rained down on her. If Kaos had wanted to harm her she was sure he would have done something more dramatic than just that. She catches the look Ampere gives her Apa and she has to smother another laugh. It amuses the girl that they think they can keep a handle on her. She would just slip away again, no matter what they said to her now. She wouldn't mind going with someone, but she wasn't going to seek someone out and ask them to follow her around.

It took all she had to not snort her contempt at the thought of being on a leash. When Ampere tries to whisper to her ebony father she listens in catching the gist of what she had to say. Gods she was making it hard to not let her snotty brat side show. She was a big girl, she had taken beatings and seen the aftermath of her father's rage. An image of her mother's mangled corpse flashed through her mind before she focused again.

"I thought it was a good idea to bring them back." She nodded her head towards the black clovers. She places her muzzle against his breathing in his scent and blowing her own back smiling softly. When her father spoke next she braced herself her ears flickering with her aggravation. "I understand the rules Apa, I really do, but it probably wouldn't be easy to get a warrior to come with me. They are all busy preparing for a potential war." She held back her real feelings, because Ampere was there. She wanted to blow up, yell that she wasn't a helpless foal, a foal, but not helpless. He had taught her how to defend herself, he should know that. Instead she held her words back, picking them carefully. Her scarlet eyes flashed with her real thoughts for just a moment.

She turned her gaze back to Ampere as she spoke to her. She dipped her head to the Sultana as she was thanked then praised. Her eyes sparkled at the thought of being a ruler after her father. She carefully hide the ambition, most of it anyway. She didn't want to scare the lady with her determination to be the best. When she basically said the same thing as her Apa she dipped her head keeping the nasty words inside. "Thank you Miss Ampere."  She listened quietly as they spoke of going to the Marshes the next day. Her ears perked up,"Can I go as well? I can show you where we were and some of the clovers might still be there." She didn't get her hopes to high, sure they would both so no. "Then I would be with several capable warriors." She smiled laying it on thick.

He nods to Ampere's words, the frown lines in his face deepening. He hadn't thought of that - Kaos strikes him as a manipulative beast, as after all hadn't Kisamoa lulled them in with empty promises before turning against them? There's no saying the flowers haven't had some unpleasant hidden effect on his daughter, and the idea of her being inflicted with a potentially fatal disease is enough to send a shudder down his spine.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, Ampere's words of reassurance towards the girl are enough to bring the ghost of a grin to his face. Her compliment will undoubtedly make Vezer feel about ten feet tall, and he reminds himself that the spark-mare is a mother as well as a Sultana, a mother obviously used to saying the right things to her children. At the girl's argument that it would be hard to get a warrior to come with her as they're preparing for war, Volterra gently shakes his great head. "A warrior's job is not always just preparing for battle. Guarding members of their herd is another vital role that they perform, and I can say with conviction that any Throat soldier would take pride in defending a child of the herd." If they thought it beneath them or too much like hard work, then Volterra would not want them amongst his ranks anyway.

As his daughter asks to join them, Volterra hesitates for a moment. On the one hand, it would be good to have her with them to guide them towards where the flowers were found, and at least there would be enough people around to protect her this time. On the other hand, it could still be dangerous, and having to look after a filly during the patrol could detract from the rest of the party's focus upon their task. After a raging internal battle, the stallion finally steels his resolve and shakes his head. He might incite the girl's wrath, but that's preferable than leading her into danger. "No, Vezér. I'm sorry, but it is too dangerous. For all we know, Kaos showed you the flowers knowing that you would return and inform us and that we would head into the Marshes to investigate. It could be a trap, and I want you to have no part of it." He keeps his voice soft, but stern enough to broach no argument. The girl is strong; he knows this. She survived her mother's beatings, she saw the mare dead by her father's hooves, and she's been trained by the warlord himself, yet still he fears for her safety.

He's not going to lose her again.

He glances back to Ampere, nodding to her suggestion. "Yes, that is a good idea. We could promote them now so we are all ready for action in the morning." That will give them a night to let their new rank sink in before they receive a baptism of fire tomorrow when they all head out on patrol.

Burning on the E D G E of something beautiful

Children always wanted to grow up so fast. It's one of those things you can't miss until it's gone - youth. There's an unrelenting end of duty to partake in once adulthood hit, and it was coming one way or another, so there was no need to rush. Saying as much though only seemed to make them hurry.

Ampere had been the same way, but she seemed to forget that now that she was a mother. She tried her best to hold onto them, to their youth, but to no avail.

Volterra handled his daughter well though, answering both as sultan and father. He wanted her safe, but not smothering her either, and thinking ahead of things she may not realize because despite her thoughts, she was still a child and a very inexperienced and vulnerable one at that, as they all were, and much more so than any of them realized.

As Volterra agreed Ampere nodded and began to slip away back to the party, knowing Volterra would follow soon, but she expected the daughter might offer a rebuke and it was better that it become a family matter at that point.
