The filly had been…overwhelmed, to put it kindly. Though her (large) family in the Throat meant well—gods, there were so many of them—they were loud and chaotic and abundant and irregular and eager and-and-and-and—

The filly young mare shook her head violently, multicolored mane and forelock scattering through the air as she lightly landed wet-packed sands of the shores. A ripple traveled through the skin from her front left limb and across her varied grey coat as a single drop of the moist granules flew up and stuck to her pastern.

Too-pale eyes widened as they rolled down to look at the offensive, small grime—a dark beige against the pure white of her sock. White-tipped ear tilted back as she shook her leg viciously, sending the wet sand flying far, far away from her skin.

A snort of consternation—rather than relief—heralded her return to the Throat. She was home—but home wasn’t this place. Home was brother. Rak.

Far above, an eerie (and pained) harpy keen sounded; a sharp pain of annoyed hurt stabbed through the strange grey mare’s chest as Esi looked to the skies as her bonded: Sachi. ’Sachi home, too,’ she quietly thought to her companion.

Again, her mottled hide twitched as the tide tickled her back hooves; the salty waves churned with sand and other filth. A concerned low pushed out of her nostrils—she wasn’t yet ready to leave the hard sand for the soft, swallowing, sucking, deep dunes.

In response, a spattering of water came down from the heavens before her—the intermittent trail of water that had bloomed in Sachi’s wake recently. The strange grey mare smiled slightly—but it was enough to lighten the worried and fearful lines around her eyes…it nearly made her white-marked face pretty.

But it wasn’t enough to tempt the mare into the sands, yet. So she waited at the cusp of the sea, harpy-Sachi settling onto her withers and seamlessly shifting into her lemur body. Small, dextrous black hands combed through the mottled strands of Esi’s mane there; while two sets of pale, pale eyes stared out at the Throat.

And they waited.

Esi! He's drawn to her like a magnet, his wings seeming to move independent from his body in their quest to bring him to her. His flight path is a strong one, his wingbeats assured to the point of almost being frantic as he gives into his haste to reach her. The warm thermals of Throat air help carry the bull along, and his tail flows like a banner behind him as it's flung up and around by the breeze generated by his flight.

She waits just outside the Throat, and the sheer familiarity of her is enough to relax the young stallion's muscles more than they've relaxed in months. Adulthood has not been easy for Arakh - whilst it has forged his body into handsome lines and raw, virile strength, it has come with the pitfalls of lust and his fear that he's broken because of how he now feels around other horses. He's also crippled by sadness at the loss of both parents, consumed by a desire to destroy Kaos for what he did, and frustrated with himself for not doing more around the Throat.

All of this is forgotten when he sees her, resplendent, at the edge of his home.

The bull's wings tilt, swooping him down towards her. He lands with a heavy thud, unleashing a loud bellow of greeting as he seeks to thrust his muzzle deep into her mane. He's careful to avoid the creature sat on her back, feeling a sudden spasm of jealousy towards it for its closeness to his twin. "Esi back," he says, his voice a heavily accented, thunderous growl. "Rak been so worried. Where Esi been?"

Though Esi knew she had grown and changed, even in the relatively brief span of time since her departure from the Throat, she didn’t truly know it until she was faced with her twin.

He was massive. So much larger than the long limbs and foalish neck she remembered him by. Brows knit together in surprised concern—he looked so different. So grown—did she look like that? Though she was concerned with dirt and filth, she was less concerned with her physical appearance. Thus, her filling into womanhood was lost on her. But Rak…Rak was swelling into manhood, and the young mare wasn’t quite ready for that change.

Her ears tilted back in anxiety—though she could not deny the relief that rushed through her as Rak’s musky, homey scent invaded her senses. And the warmth from his muzzle and breath in her mane tilted her lips in an even larger smile, calming her too-pale eyes and lightening her face. “Hello Rak,” was her response, muffled as she buried her nose into his shoulder. His strong, smooth, perfectly grey skin—home.

A long pause met his question—long enough for Sachi’s protective and curious lemur-hands to reach down and attempt to grab and stretch Rak’s nostrils that breathed so close to her in her Esi’s mane. There was no malice in her motions, just watchfulness and possessiveness. Her long, fluffy tail curved around Esi’s withers, as if to reaffirm her own stake in the strange mare’s life in the face of Esi’s overwhelming relief at seeing her twin once again.

“Esi in the bamboo,” was her quiet, and simple, reply. Though much of the Green Labrynth was a nightmare for the mare—so many haphazard poles shooting up through earth; chaotic shadows and a maze to get lost in. From the air, however, she had found a stand of perfectly ordered bamboo; as if someone had carefully planted it. Each shoot equally distanced from the other…it had been the perfect place of solitude for the mare to hide.

“Esi need…space, alone,” there was an apology in these quietly bleated words, “Miss Rak, though.” And, again, she pushed into his shoulder, though this time with her whole head (perhaps not taking quite enough care of her sharp bull horns) and not just with her muzzle.

Sachi indignatnly barked from Esi’s back, however—quite at odds with her bonded’s happy reunion. Esi was not alone, the lemur seemed to imply. Not in the slightest.

A startled snort is given as little monkey-fingers grab and pull his nostrils. He fights back his natural urge to bite away the offending hand, knowing that doing so would hurt Esinakh by proxy. Instead he gently disentangles himself from the lemur, ruffling his wings and edging towards his sister's cow-horned head so as to inhale her warm, familiar scent away from the curious hands of her companion. She smells like home, even more than the Throat does. No matter how long they're apart, the second she returns to him he feels as though she's never been away.

Esi in the bamboo. He frowns, tilting his head and flickering his ears. "Where that?" He hasn't explored Helovia as much as he could have, and has no idea where one might find bamboo. He'd tried to search for his sister, yet he quickly realised that their home was too large for one man to make any kind of dent in it. Unable to find her, he'd had to flee back to the Throat in the hope she'd appear there, which she thankfully has.

At her remark about needing space alone, the young stallion's frown furrows. Does that mean...without even him? Trying his best not to be hurt by the comment, he instead grasps onto her next one like a lifeline, and burrows his muzzle deeper into her warm Esi-skin. "Rak miss Esi so much." It's no false admission - he really had missed her more than he can put into words. She pushes into his shoulder and he returns the gesture with gusto, smiling as he hears their horns clack together as they maneuvre into position. "Esi rejoin Throat? Rak can call for someone to come and accept Esi." He looks at her hopefully.

The strangeling’s ears flickered in time with every word her twin brother spoke, catching every syllable and holding onto it dearly. Softly, she answered his question, “It beyond spiders,” referencing the depths of the forest where the colony of young spiders had asked for help in eating ants—and her too-pale eyes blink rapidly as she remembered her panic at being covered in burning, biting ants.

But, by now, the encroaching tide has brought the waves churned with sand and grit up to her hind fetlocks, and a shudder runs through her thin hide of many grays. Unbidden, her long and slender wings unfold slightly, as if begging to take her from the insulting sand that threatened to overwhelm and snuff her out in every moment.

A shaky breath, slightly white-rimmed eyes seeking solace in Arakh’s pale blue, “Rak—” slight panic rising in her voice—but in his eyes she found hope instead of solace. A hope that she would return to the Throat, call it home with him.

A tangle of thoughts, fears, and wishes collided in her head; all the while, in her pained silence, she strained forward into Arakh’s bulk, as if seeking to be absorbed by him and escape the threatening waves.

“Yes,” she finally gasped, “Stay in Throat,” though there was no relief or happiness in her words, only a need to stay near her brother-calf. And then her pale, pale, panicked eyes closed tightly, “Just need…space…from family.” The smallest amount of overwhelmed apology colored her last confession—a plea for her brother to understand.

Sachi, meanwhile, clutched tightly to Esi’s mane—as if she could somehow hold her bonded together.
