He doesn't come to the Veins very often, not unless he's visiting the Earth God for advice or a quest. It just seems wrong to trespass upon such sacred ground for unimportant reasons, yet he finds himself coming here today out of necessity rather than desire. Volterra has racked his brains to think of somewhere volcanic to obtain the second item for his quest, and after much frustrated musing, he finally decided that the Veins is the only place that the Earth God could possibly have meant. There's no other volcanoes in Helovia that he can think of, and the leakings of lava that seem to expand the island daily are certainly a sign that he's looking in the right place.

Now he's here, with his hooves clacking heavily upon the hardened magma underfoot, there's the small task of deciding which bit of the volcano to steal from. Is it not akin to sacrilege to just snatch a piece of holy volcano? The onyx warlord gazes up at the four shrines, realising that they seem to be nearest to the volcano itself but finding it hard to make the decision to go up there and take a bit. "Hmmm," he finds himself rumbling, arching his tail and shaking his head as he ponders the conundrum that faces him. Going up to the shrines to pilfer a piece of rock from behind them could result in him angering the Gods, and he's not entirely sure that the possibility enhanced magic is worth the risk of a painful smiting.

Above him, a full moon crests in the sky, bathing him in a silvery glow that accentuates every muscle in his body. He certainly has the physical strength to chisel off a chunk of volcano for his quest, but it's another question entirely whether he's willing to risk the ire of the Gods for taking a piece of holy land. Volterra snorts unhappily and stares up at the volcano, his mind a haze of indecision.

I figured we could have this quest thread as just Vol and Iso, then have the one in the Endless Blue with all four of them? :D @Isopia

ISOPIA
Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

As if reading his thoughts, Isopia shakes her head.
"They dont' care." She muses under her breath, regarding the blue-encrusted expanses of land with an academic but wholly disinterested gaze.

They have left Vulkan and Otem in the care of Hubris and Babel - though truthfully Isopia isn't sure whether or not her golden counterpart actually cares about the wellbeing of her offspring. Hubris does, and that is all the assurance that she needs that when she and Volterra return, they will find the twins safe and sound.

Today is about completing Volterra's quest, or at least making strides to bring it nearer to completion. Does she even know what this quest is for? Since her pregnancy and the birth of the twins her memory has been hazy. But, not wanting to seem disinterested, she doesn't bother asking.

"Once this land was lush and beautiful. But then the Gods abandoned it. They used to appear much more frequently than they do now." Casting her golden gaze around, the demigoddess sighed and shrugged. "If they cared so much about the land, they would not leave it like this. Besides, The God of the Earth would not ask you to remove something that you would later be chastised for having removed." For all of the Earth's faults, maliciousness wasn't one of them.

The voice summons a smile onto the concerned countenance of the Indomitable, and he immediately swings around to beam at Isopia. He glances downwards, looking for the foals, and there's a frisson of worry when he sees that she's alone - the absence of her dragons soon settles any anxiety, though, and he knows his own companions have remained in the Throat to keep an eye on things too. Besides, the twins seem to be growing far faster than any child Volterra has observed before....except Isopia. They'll certainly become self-sufficient more quickly than other foals, and he reminds himself that with their strong genes, they'll be fine to remain alone in the Throat with just the dragons for company.

The giantess's tail has Volterra's ears pricking forwards, his interest painted openly on his white-marked face. "I didn't know that," he responds, glancing curiously around himself. It's hard to imagine this barren spit of rock ever being lush or green, but he's also aware that Isopia's knowledge of Helovian history far outweighs his own. Her additional remark about the Earth God slaps him like a fist across the face; of course, he should have known that Father Earth would not set him something impossible, or something that would incite the wrath of the Gods for obtaining. "That's true," he murmurs sheepishly, feeling rather foolish for ever having doubted his patron deity. Volterra fears very, very few things in this world, but the ire of his favourite God is certainly one of them. Not just because the Earth God could undoubtedly crush him into oblivion with one careless flick of a hoof, but also because he idolises the giant tribrid so much that it would cause him immeasurable pain to disappoint him.

"Will you accompany me to the shrines? The volcano seems more....present up there." He begins to move, casting his massive head around to see whether the mare is following. "How are you, kis hollo? Motherhood suits you." And it does, which is a surprise given the giantess's somewhat frosty exterior. It could be Volterra seeing what he wants to see, but he thinks he's never seen anything more perfect than Isopia tending to their foals.

ISOPIA
Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

Isopia nods her head in willing agreement, but says nothing in response to his mutters of surprise or acknowledgement of the logic of what she says. If she wasn't so fond of Volterra, she might say that they could fill a book or an entire cave with the contents of what he didn't know. But she loved him, in her own way, and easily forgave his transgressions. Her two children were evidence of that, surely.

"Does it?" Isopia asks, her normally placid voice sounding mildly surprised. She thinks back to her recent argument with Otem and how unimpressed her daughter was with Isopia's way of dealing with her. It hadn't bothered the demi-goddess at the time, but nor would she be nominating herself for any parenting awards any time soon. "You're the expert, not me." Isopia replies before she can properly think about what she's saying. And as soon as the words at out, Isopia mentally bites her tongue not wanting to open that particular can of worms just now. "Neither of my parents were around much, as you know." She quickly adds, trying to mask the potential sting of her words.

"Already Otem and Vulkan seem quite clever in their own ways. I think they'll take more after me than you in that regard." A small smile parts Isopia's lips and she lightly flutters a wing towards Volterra's side in jest.

All of this feels easy and comfortable once more. Although now the two are uncontroversially more than just friends the way that they once were, the solidity upon which their new relationship has been built seems far sturdier than anything which had come before. Though perhaps Isopia is merely romanticizing the notion. After all, Volterra is just as promiscuous as ever he was. But still, in Isopia's mind for the time being, all is well.

Her comment stings him, even if the only sign of any hurt is a marginal flicker of an ear. There's truth in her statement, of course - he does know a lot about motherhood, and has seen more than his fair share of pregnant and just-birthed mares to be able to form an opinion on whether they seem suited to it or not. Yet the remark makes him concerned that all those things that caused their previous spat are still there, merely brushed beneath the carpet. Volterra, ever the optimist, had chosen to think that everything was revolved and that Isopia no longer cared about his other women, but now he's beginning to believe that he was hasty in his assertions.

She quickly moves to cover the comment, and whilst the Indomitable is still suspicious about what she'd truly meant, he allows the smooth segue of the conversation. It also gives him an opportunity to mention something that has been playing on his mind since the twins' birth, when the Mountain spoke of her mother. "You mentioned your mother at the birth. You never really speak about her....what was she like?" He hopes he is not being too bold in his questioning, but he is truly interested in the maternal side of the giant mare's heritage. After all, Kahlua's blood now runs through the veins of his children, so he's bound to be curious about what she was like. He doesn't even know what species she was!

Her next words incite a deep, booming laugh. Normally the beast would recoil at such an insult or, indeed, quickly move to disprove it with force, but this time he knows the truth in the giantess's voice. All the same, he gives an exaggerated flinch and looks as mock-offended as he possibly can. "Ah, but in their rugged good looks and charm, they will take after me," he rumbles, tones jovial and eyes twinkling.

He's absentmindedly walking as he speaks, ascending the narrow path towards the shrines where he intends to take his prize of volcanic rock. As ever when he's with Isopia, though, other things are pushed out of his mind - he finds himself only able to focus on her, in all her glory.
