When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

Orangemoon had settled upon the Thistle Meadow beautifully. The cool breeze let the field of golden grasses billow and wave lazily, the soft rustle providing a calming backdrop to the upbeat song of the morning birds. The trees seemed to hold fire, and in the dawning golden light, they seemed to truly be ablaze.

Stark against the amber backdrop was the unicorn mare, her galaxies and white banners moving leisurely across the meadow. Ears twisted and pivoted, capturing the song of the morning, and she found herself humming along. She had just woken, and having just experienced a dreamless night, she was well rested and ready to take on the day. A soft mist still hung low over portions of the meadow, creating light cover for some of the field’s inhabitants to cross over unbothered to sup from the cool water at the river’s edge. Ki’irha paused as a pair of deer bounded across her path, seeking a drink before retreating into the forest for better cover.

Despite her troubled heart and weary soul, she had to admit that sometimes living this way was peaceful. She was not teathered by law or purpose, and she felt no desire nor need to please anyone other than herself. At some points, instead of motivating her to continue forward, the obvious disappointment showed by those who had emerged from her past forced her to step backwards. Sure, she had left and disappeared, but everyone was so quick to assume she had just left willingly. Had no one come looking for her? Had no one decided it was so unlike her to abandon her post or her loved ones? Had no one wondered if she was cold or starving or bleeding or dead? It was better this way. No one had to depend on her, and she didn’t have to depend on anyone other than herself. When she happened into one of these moods, she allowed herself to feel wild. She was truly a vagabond, a fearless wanderer. She could go anywhere, do anything, sleep beneath any sky. No one would hold her back. Nothing would stand in her way.

She stretched her legs, traveling at an easy canter towards the river bank. Her tail swayed behind her, and she let out a light whinny to disturb a small flock of birds pecking the mud in search for bugs. She dropped her head down, allowing her lips to touch the clean fresh water.

A voice carried easily through the chilled air, and the doe lifted her head to look. There she saw a pegasus mare, who carried a gentle youth in her smoothly carved face. The presentation of the offer seemed to be lighthearted, and though the woman had at least a few years on the girl, she seemed to be a fair enough match. The fae was slightly taller than the unicorn, though the height didn’t much matter seeing as how the girl also carried an impressive set of wings. A bit of her felt strange fighting a stranger, whether or not it was all in good spirit. Regardless, this could be fun, and she would enjoy the sport.

“It’s a beautiful morning,” Ki’irha began, turning her entire frame to face the girl head on. “I wouldn’t mind starting it off right.” With that, she sprang.

Muscles coiled and released beneath her navy coat as she tried to close the distance between them. She was thankful for the quick pace she had taken traveling to the river’s side, as despite it’s short length, it had warmed her up enough to avoid any initial strain from the sudden burst. Approaching quickly she skid to a halt, rising up onto rear hooves, scraping the air with her fore-hooves, hoping to feel them make contact with tensed muscle or springy wing. Her hooves came crashing down, though she cast her silver gaze across what she could see of the earth, trying to ensure she didn’t fall upon one of the canids that would more than likely join the fray. She was not attempting to kill or maim, especially not the girl’s companions.

When blackened hooves met earth once more, she leapt forward, tail lashing behind her to assist with her balance as she reached out with bared teeth, attempting to catch flesh or feather within her gaping jaws. She charged through, willing to use herself as a battering ram, though she was careful to avoid leading with her horn. She was unsure what kind of force it could take to complete the break, so better safe than sorry.

Something about this felt so natural, felt so right. Despite her focus and drive as she participated in this dance, she felt more free than she ever thought she could.

Perhaps she had danced this dance before.
