fear the vulture and it will come. fear nothing and you are the vulture.
Ever since meeting (truly meeting, not simply running away from her presence in the Meadow), there had been something new in the stallion.

Yes, the drive for pleasure, desire for lust and any other feel-good action, was still present in his barrel and mind. But there was also a new drive that pushed and pulled him south: paternity. It both terrified and surprised the hulking man in equal parts. How did he have this drive? Where did it come from? He had no example of paternal love in his own life—though, deep down, he had certainly yearned for it throughout each blow and harsh word. In fact, this yearning had driving him to find love in any way he could. Physical love was easiest and quickest, to be certain—so he had sought that out in droves. But it never lasted long.

But this new feeling that had begun to fill him since splashing with Melita was lasting. It was a continual warmth—a feeling of worth and of being needed—that stayed, unwilling to be shaken from his chest. It was rather disconcerting how strongly and quickly it found a foothold (hoofhold) in him.

So the vulture found himself staring into the mouth of a cave, nearly as far south as one could get in the continental Helovia. Heat billowed out from the Heart Cave’s mouth, leaving the ground rather barren and rocky where he stood. Orangemoon had robbed any greenery, as well. To be truthful, it was rather dreary.

“Gode, wat doen ek?” was a guttural grumble to himself.

gode, wat doen ek? - gods, what am I doing?
