A solitary mare champed grass at Helovia's border, pausing to paw through the snow to get at the wilted grass beneath. The cold season had only just begun, but there was a already a nip in the air and Aryel was grateful for her heavy winter coat. Her dark blue wings had orginally been half-unfurled to catch some of the sun's warmth, but were now pressed tight against her sides.

Aryel had only been here a day, taking some time to rest after her trip from her home to Helovia. She had caught the faintest scents on the breeze of other equines, but had yet to see any. Aryel knew about horses and unicorns, although she had never seen any up-close. She had stayed away from herds before, and her home herd had been all pegasi.

A gust of wind sent powder snow into her nostrils, and she snorted explosively to drive the tickling coldness out. The tall, stately pine trees blocked some of the wind, but replaced it with an eerie, shadowed quiet broken only by the occasional moan of stray gusts. She didn't like being in enclosed spaces very much.

(If nobody meets Aryel, she stays for a while, then continues deeper into Helovia.)

As you move along the snowy terrain you are not alone. In the bows of the barren trees there sits a peculiar bird, one that appears to emanate with light. It opens its mouth and the most beautiful tune is emit. It appears you have captured its attention.

It swoops down near you, alighting atop the smooth jut of your withers. It exudes a soothing warmth from its avian body, and as you study it, it would appear as though it is not a bird, but something else entirely. Along its avian contours you can make out small points of light, as if stars in a constellation. It perches atop you curiously for a moment before flying to a branch not far away, seemingly attempting to lead you to somewhere specific.

It moves from branch to branch. Would you follow?

Aryel looked up in surprise as a beautiful call caught her attention. "Hello, little cousin." she said to the bird, unconsciously using the term many members of her home herd had used to refer to birds. Seeming to be made of light itself, she watched as the bird spread it's wings and glided down to rest on her back. Head craned over her shoulder, she couldn't help but admire the creature. "What are you?" she wondered aloud. It certainly didn't look like any bird she had seen before.

In response, the bird took flight again, perching on another branch with an expectant air. "Do you want me to follow you?" asked Aryel, tilting her head. She took a step forward, then stopped in one of her rare moments when she considered before she acted. What if it was a trap, and this bird was some sort of malign spirit?

No, that was ridiculous. Besides, she was strong (for a horse not even fifteen hands) and fast. If there was danger, she would be ready. Adventure was beckoning! Aryel kicked up her heels and galloped to the bird's perch, following it.

(Excitement :D)

The bird grows exuberant that you have decided to make chase, and it begins to fly closer to you. It swoops beneath your head and then above, maneuvering through the air with profound finesse. Something glitters within its beak; something you failed to notice previously. It had since fallen somewhat from its grasp, so that a deep purple gem can be clearly seen as it dangles from a chain in the bird's mouth. It spins through the air, the cool clasp of frostfall stark in your lungs.

It seems to be begging for an aerial race, as it begins to elevate into the sky. Perhaps if you win, you will be able to study the precious stone for yourself, which begins to glow faintly in the sunlight. Perhaps it harbors more power than meets the eye?

Aryel watched as the bird flew up, the strange necklace clasped in it's beak. "Hey, wait up!" laughed the mare, turned and galloping again. Her wings unfurled, pumping the air. Taking flight was difficult in a forest, but she caught sight of a small clearing that would provided just enough space. She jumped in time with each downstroke, whinnying as her hooves finally left the ground.

Aryel spiraled upwards in a wide circle, her legs still galloping as if she was running in the air. Her wide, powerful wings caught an updraft and she managed to draw level with the bird. She put on another burst of power, gliding around the avian and ending in a flapping hover in front of it. "Watch this!" she cried, folding her wings and diving, angling into a spin. Diving always gave her vertigo, though, so she angled into a climb before she went too far. No sense in impaling herself on the trees.

The astral body seemed to bubble with mirth at the mare's athletic game. It chirped a hollow symphony, a mellifluous sonnet so diverse from the one composed by more terrestrial birds. This one - a living constellation; this incandescent, celestial body - almost seemed other-worldly: no doubt a creature conceived from the nebulas. It too dove down toward the mare, before taking off toward a field of alabaster which lay beyond the vast palisade of trees below them.

The Deep Forrest stretched for what seemed like an eternity beneath them.

The bird soared merely feet from the trees' barren limbs and the spires of evergreens, its speed rather anomalous, though the mare would likely have no problems keeping up - pegasus can fly faster than the average bird... but then again, Columba was no average bird.

Aryel's ears flicked at the bird's song. She had never a birdcall like it before, it reminded her of the stories of the phoenix, the flaming bird with the most beautiful call in the world. This bird had to be a close second. She still couldn't tell what it was, but now that she had a closer look, it almost resembled a cloud of stars, a piece of the night sky.

The bird had changed direction again, mimicking her dive and then swooping off towards an icy field. Aryel followed, her wings stirring snow flurries from the treetops. It was obvious the bird was leading her somewhere, the pace it was setting was slow enough so she wouldn't fall behind, but fast enough that she had to keep moving. As far as she could tell, they were heading southwest. "Where are we going?" Aryel asked the bird, not expecting an answer. It could sing beautifully, but so far, it didn't talk. Her eyes were drawn to the chain in it's beak again. The bird was practically dangling it in front of her. Aryel snorted, her wings picking up speed as she slowly began gaining ground on the bird.

The constellation sailed through the air with nary a flaw. Its pyretic anatomy sliced through the air like a blade, and a small amount of dust flitted to the ground from its luminescent, caudal appendage. It was rather close to the snowy earth, and it watched its rival speed up next to it. It increased speed, then slowed back down, as if mocking the mare in playful jubilance. Quite a while had passed by, and quite some ground had sped by the pair. They now flew across a glade thinly interspersed with trees. They were headed toward the Thistle Meadow in the east, yet still they remained within the vast expanse of woodland that was Helovia's Threshold.

The bird coerced the pegasus to accelerate, chirping and swirling through the stale Frostfall air. It began to increase its altitude once again and headed directly upward, then proceeded in its arc until its belly faced the heavens, and it twisted so that it was right side up once again. Perhaps just a little bit longer. It hadn't grown tired of its aerobatic escapade just yet. It was enjoying this too much to give up its animator, the svelte star breather's treasure so soon.

Aryel noticed the meadow in the distance, and wondered how far they were going. She was hardly tired, though. Just like when they were running, pegasi could fly for a long time. She increased her speed again, trying to overtake the bird. The cold air whooshed by, chilling the mare and filling her with excitement. There was something in the cold air and the bright sky and just flying fast that set her blood pumping. She tossed her head as she trailed the bird, throughly enjoying herself.

She watched as the bird flew up, completing a slow rotation before dropping back down. She wasn't sure she could do the same, though. Somehow, she couldn't visualize herself flipping over like that. Still, it was worth a try. Tilting her wings, she gained altitude and slowly rolled, spreading her wings as far as they would go for balance. She wobbled a little as she completed the spin and righted herself, but she had copied the bird's trick. "You're not getting away just yet." she taunted it, increasing her speed yet again.

For a moment, the amulet was in free fall. It had slipped from the bird's grasp as it sought to keep ahead of the winged mare, and it squawked in momentaneous panic. It swooped down abruptly and clutched it within its beak once again moments before it hit the frozen loam. From the corner of its eye it watched as the pegasus continued her pursuit.

This mare was a worthy opponent, decided Columba. It was pleasantly surprised that the pegasus managed to replicate its aerial maneuver, and it would seem that Aryel had managed to impress the avian constellation. It halted in mid air as the mare caught up, the amulet dangling from its beak like a pendulum, swaying modestly in the breeze.

It alighted upon the snow-powdered terrain and waited for the mare to do the same, watching curiously as alabaster dust began to careen slowly through the air.

Aryel gasped as the bird momentarily lost it's grip on the amulet, then breathed a sigh of relief as it caught it again. That was close, she thought. She wasn't quite sure about the amulet's significance, but she had a suspicion that beautiful birds that looked like the night sky didn't just up to everyone carrying mysterious necklaces. She noticed the trees were now behind them, and stretching in front of them was a large snowy expanse dotted with the occasional patch of tall grass peeking through the snow. Clouds had gathered into a thick blanket overhead, making the whole area look somewhat desolate. Silence lay like a blanket over the meadow.

She slowed as the bird did, flaring out her wings to come to a hovering stop. "That was fun." she giggled, the invigorating cold and the flight making her feel almost like a foal again. The four-year-old didn't often get a chance to frolic and goof off, especially back home. She watched the bird go into a landing, swooping down to alight gracefully in the meadow. Aryel's landing was somewhat less elegant, she tilted into a downwards spiral and hit the ground at a gallop, sending up a wave of powder snow that mixed with the flakes beginning to fall. She trotted to a stop, nostrils sending up clouds of steam as she regarded the bird curiously. "Okay," she said, lowering her head to get a better look at it. "You brought me here. Now what?"

When the mare alighted, the celestial dove slowly waddled toward her, talons squelching the soft snow. Its anomalous heat caused some of the powder to melt, causing large prints to dapple the ashen mantle. It stopped in front of the mare and dropped the amulet at her hooves, seemingly as a reward for partaking in its aerial cavort.

Upon doing so, it took to the sky, this time, it seemed, for good.

As you study the stone closer, you notice it begins to glow. Perhaps unbeknownst to you is the fact that this particular stone is a deflection amulet, capable of obviating harmful magic. Where the bird may have found such a treasure remains a mystery, and it would appear as though you may never know the origins of the peculiar creature of the stars.

Aryel watched as the bird dropped the necklace at her hooves. "It's beautiful." she said, entranced by it's gentle purple glow. A flutter of wings alerted her that the bird was leaving again. And this time, she could tell, it didn't intend for her to follow. "Wait!" She called up to it as it disappeared. Don't go! Who are you?" What are you?

And then she was alone again.

With a sigh, she looked down at the amulet again. It was a gift, and it certainly was pretty. She nudged her nose under it, then lifted her head and let the chain slide down her neck to rest at her shoulders. She felt...what? Protected? She had never experienced ward magic before and didn't recognize it now, she just knew that the necklace gave her a feeling of security. She snorted, and chalked it up to just have an active imagination.

The snow had begun to fall in earnest down, and the temperature had dropped. Chilled, Aryel began heading southwest to look for shelter.
