YOU CAN'T STRAY FROM WHAT YOU ARE
YOU'RE THE CLOSEST THING TO HELL I'VE SEEN SO FAR

The third and final part of the Indomitable's quest brings him to the Endless Blue. Initially, the Earth God's request for sand from beneath the Endless Blue had concerned him considerably - Volterra is capable of many things, but breathing underwater is not one of them. Then he'd remembered the glass tunnel placed there by 'Kisamoa', one of the only good things that the vile false God actually managed to do. That will make the onyx warlord's task considerably easier, and he makes the journey from the Throat to the beach in good spirits.

Before he leaves his home, he invites Isopia, Otem and Vulkán to come with him. Spending time with his youngest children and the Mountain is something that brings him great happiness, even if he can't do it as much as he'd like thanks to the many obligations that come from the crown upon his head. This quest, though, is technically for the benefit of the Throat - a stronger Sultan means a stronger herd, in Volterra's mind - so he feels no guilt in taking time out of his duties to gather the necessary items, and if he can involve his young family in that then all the better. Vulkán, ever the keen explorer, quickly agreed and has followed close on his sire's heels across Helovia. The colt is a little bit odd (he'd refused to move from his sleeping spot to come with his father until the sun had hit a certain notch on a rock, which is downright bizarre and quite worrying), but his large size, volcanic magic and obvious intelligence means that Volterra has high hopes for him. Vérzés flies alongside them during their journey, whilst Vadir hangs back to look after Isopia and Otem during their trek - well, that's her excuse, although the stallion suspects she just wishes to eyeball Babel some more.

They arrive upon the beach in mid-afternoon, and the beast quickly glances down with a warm smile at his youngest son. It's a warm day and the travel has been long, but he's pleased to see that the colt doesn't seem overly exhausted. A fine warrior in the making! "This is the Endless Blue. It's changed a lot recently...that tunnel never used to be there." He gestures with his scarred muzzle to the glowing stones that signify the entrance to the cavern, which he begins to wander towards ready to collect the sand required for his quest. "You know, lad, when I was your age I used to come here to train. Running on the deep sand helps tone your muscles and increase your stamina ready for when you can take to the battlefield as an adult." He beams happily down at the boy, assuming he will be delighted at the mention of future battle. After all, he's Volterra's son - surely he will want to become a great warrior as well?

The journey is a long, arduous one, but the colt does his best to keep up with his father's large strides. He might not fully comprehend the idea of trying to impress anybody, but there's a part of him that wants his esteemed sire to look proudly down upon him and ignore his many flaws in favour of his nature-given boons. Vulkán is growing rather quickly considering his actual age, but the long journey is extremely tiring and he can feel the warm weather taking its toll on his young, untested limbs. Only through sheer force of will does the volcano-boy keep pace with his father, and he seizes the opportunity to catch his breath and shake some of the sweat from his body whilst Volterra's back is turned.

When the Indomitable addresses him, the colt's face creases into a frown. "The Endless Blue? Why is it called that, Apa? The sea isn't actually blue, you know, it's just a reflection of the sky, so that seems like a rather silly name." He's discovering these naming errors quite regularly, much to his concern. "Nor is it technically endless, as there must be some land in the distance that breaks it up." He huffs, displeased yet again by the slapdash naming of Helovia's lands.

Vulkán is used to sand underfoot, but this moist sea-sand is entirely different from the soft, endless Throat-sand. The ocean receives a glance of vague interest from him, and he thinks he'll come back here at some point to investigate more intently. As his sire speaks to him again, he glances up and tilts his quad-horned head impassively. Why on earth would he want to waste his time running along the sand? It seems like a dreadfully pointless exercise, and the colt stares up at his father as though the black warlord is quite mad. "That strikes me as rather pointless. There's a big difference between stamina that comes from long-distance running, and stamina that comes from fighting. Using one to train for the other does not seem like it would work." It's said in that emotionless, monotone voice of his, his tone not changing regardless of what he's saying. He doesn't realise how this may offend his father - he doesn't realise a lot of things, really.

"Besides..." His voice trails off as he looks out to sea again. "I don't really like the sound of battling. I think there's much better ways to settle disputes." For all his futile, attempts to impress his father, he may have just caused untold damage with that one sentence.

YOU CAN'T STRAY FROM WHAT YOU ARE
YOU'RE THE CLOSEST THING TO HELL I'VE SEEN SO FAR

He blinks stupidly down at his son as the boy speaks. Heavens, Isopia was right - their children really have inherited her brains. "Uh...." Volterra has never really thought about that before. He'd just accepted that things are named just because, and questioning them had never entered his mind. He stares numbly down at the boy, torn between being impressed at the lad's obvious intelligence, and annoyed at his smart-arse questioning. Eventually he just gives a deep, booming chuckle. "I think that's a question for your mother, son," he says with a laugh and a wink.

He moves towards the cavern with his son trailing behind him. Inside the glassy abyss in front of him, he can see the fish swimming overhead, quite perturbing considering the fact they're normally below him. Cautiously he steps into the tunnel, and the sea above him casts dazzling lights across his body as the sun refracts through the water. It's beautiful, he supposes, if eerie.

Then, the volcano-boy is speaking again, and Volterra snaps his head towards him. Goodness, the colt is argumentative! He should be proud of the fact that the foal is willing to stand up to even his father to get his point across, which certainly denotes a kind of bravery. "They're one and the same, Vulkán. You're right that there's a world of difference between running and fighting, but increasing your stamina through one will help you with the other. There's no experience that can match what you'll get on the battlefield, of course, but anything you can do to tone your muscles will help." He nods sagely. At Vulkán's next words, the stallion's head nearly snaps from his neck as he turns to stare. The boy...does not wish to be a warrior?

Volterra thinks of Astarot, focused on his healing. He'd been proud of the young man for the path he'd chosen, but he'd truly thought that Vulkán, given his esteemed parentage, would want to follow his genetic perks onto the battlefield. To learn that the boy has no interest in fighting is a disappointment, to say the least. "Oh," he rumbles, hardpressed to hide the disappointment in his voice. The lad is entitled to choose his own path, but...it seems like such a waste. "What would you like to do, if not become a warrior?" He makes a valiant attempt to sound cheerful and interested, but it is hard to keep the sadness from his voice.

His father bats his question to his mother, and the colt resolves to ask Isopia once the giantess arrives with Otem. Volterra is only too happy to answer his question about fighting, though, and the boy senses that he's touched a nerve. It's obvious that his father is passionate about the battlefield, but it's sadly not a passion that Vulkán shares. With his difficulties when it comes to emotions, he finds it hard to find the fine line between expressing his opinions, and accidentally offending somebody.

Because Vulkán is not very good at reading cues that aren't expressedly said, he doesn't notice the disappointment in his father's voice and expression. He thinks the stallion is genuinely interested, which he supposes is a good thing. "I haven't decided yet. I quite like the idea of crafting, though." He's not given the matter much thought given his age, but crafting seems like an excellent way to put his intelligence to good use. Crafting things for the herd would mean it's in his power to make sure they're all neat and orderly, as it wouldn't do for a herd as great as the Throat to have haphazard, poorly-made equipment. For all his 'quirks', Vulkán is very determined once he sets his mind to a task, which is why he thinks that particular job would suit him.

He's followed his father into the glass tunnel, and glances up with vacant interest at the fish overhead. The reef and all manner of sea plants will surely appeal to Otem, and the colt looks over his shoulder impatiently for the filly to arrive.
