The mare was treading lightly on this ice-crusted earth, wary of the slick ice that betrayed your weight, letting you plunge deep into the soft white and fought back as you scramble out onto the deep drifts, trying to avoid falling into the soft white snow. Tor was experienced in these little details, at her good age of seven years, she wasn't any inexperienced filly these days. Although the mare would happily meet with others in the Deep Forest, she was mainly searching for the Grey. Official Grey business, the healer thought to herself, amused with the sound of it. It was still somewhat bizarre to be part of something- she hadn't really been with a herd for, oh, one and a half or two years now, even if she had lived not completely alone. Simply, she was curious to meet the part of Ophelia and Ktulu's intriguing band.

Tor snorted, quietly reprimanding herself as she turned her focus back to the dark forest. It was a beautiful evening, the sooty purple sky quickly shifting to a deep navy, the rim of the world painted with black. The death of the sun led to the flickering specks of white stars, to the hanging of the pure white moon happily resting on its bed. Full moon, Tor thought. Not only was the evening peaceful, it was quiet, a warm silence that enveloped the soft glowing snow. Night was peaceful mostly, despite at times being a ravenous beast feeding on your fear, preying on your darkest thoughts. At least, that was how Tor had always perceived it. Night had its own regal beauty, in the silver lines brushed onto the edges of trees and the swooping white curves over snow, in the deep rich blues and purples that contrasted it on the bark of the pines and the bare trees, in the shadows of the forest.

Tor came to rest near under one of the many fir trees, one hoof cocked lazily, not really dozing but instead watching the flickering balls of light suspended far far away in the black velvet sky. It seemed endless, the ebony curtain, chock full of constellations and stars sprinkling the black hide like the white fur petals on a fawn's coat.

It was getting increasingly late and Eytan still being so young had gotten tired very quickly. When night rolled around she found herself thankful that he played so hard during the daylight hours. He always exhausted by the time the evening rolled around and he slept all night. She didn't have to worry about him running off into the darkness and getting himself hurt. She worried enough about her son doing the same.

He was not by her side tonight, though. Ktulu had left him in Ophelia's care so she could wander the forest she had become familiar with. Eytan grunted in his sleep, causing Ktulu to tilt one ear in his direction. He stirred then was still and quiet again. The dark mare continued to pick her way carefully through the forest, mindful of low tree branches and slick ice that would threaten Eytan's sleeping place on her back.

It was not long before she happened upon another mare, one whom she recognized from the Grey's meeting. "Good evening." She greeted quietly. "Tor, I believe?"

A faint rustle announced the presence of another. Tor vaguely recognized the black-and-white mare. She seemed to look like Ophelia... Ktulu! Ah, that's who it was. Head executioner, other half of the leaders of the Grey. Most distinctly did the mare remind Tor of Paladin, with a mane and tail of snow white and cream legs, a golden pawprint upon her ebony shoulder, eyes red as crimson blood and silver horn dipped in violent red, perhaps a hand shorter than Tor. This time, she was unaccompanied by the grizzly bear cub. Indeed, Tor's thoughts were confirmed when Ktulu greeted her cordially and softly.

"Yes, I'm Tor. And you're Ktulu." The words were spoken kindly, not with anger, as the mare's brown eyes shifted back to the exposed innards of the sky, the glowing workings of the stars and moons. If Tor's once-mentor, Lei, was here, the strange unicorn would probably speak of the movements of Li'Ning and Tuta, the constellations Barin and Borock, how their celestial alignments meant something about the luck of pegasi this month and the strength of the wolves... something like that. Tor had never been interested in these words, although the polite mare had always done her best listen and take in the information. Lei had always said- 'too set in the present, Tor' whenever Tor had attempted to discover the secrets of the constellations to appease the eccentric unicorn. "Are you well, Ktulu?" Tor asked, shifting her gaze down to the black mare from the canopy of the stars.

"I am." Ktulu said after a moment of silence. She hadn't ever had anyone tell her who she was before and had to take a moment to decide if this new mare that Ophelia had brought into their group was speaking out of sarcasm because Ktulu was unsure of her name, or if she was showing off her knowledge. In the end she decided that it would not due to be rude or defensive to any individual in their group that was undeserving.

The mare moved to position herself beside the medic, her steps slow and gentle so she wouldn't jostle Eytan and wake him. "I am." She answered the older mare's question. "Yourself?" Ktulu had never been one for idle conversation with individuals she didn't know. In the Threshold she could tell them where to go or invite them to the forest. She could speak easily when she had instructions to give, but idle conversations was difficult.

"Well enough. It's silly, but I wish there was something for me to do, some action. As much action as a healer can do, anyways." Tor replied to Ktulu, welcoming the black mare's company. Neither of them seemed able to carry on a conversation much beyond a handful of words, unlike Tor and Ophelia's instant friendship. No, Ktulu was very different from Ophelia. In the end, the draft was uncertain if she liked Ktulu, or disliked her. Of course, Tor did not question her loyalty to Ktulu- she would treat her with the respect due for one of such position. No, she simply wondered what the inverted mare actually was...

"And who is your companion, may I ask?" Tor asked curiously, looking at the small bear. At one time, Tor had pondered the possibilities of taking on a companion. Surely it would be an intimate relationship, but Tor couldn't quite bring herself to go ask the gods for one. No. Tor liked sharing her ways and helping others, but to have her mind connected to another animal at all times seemed a little too out of her comfort zone.

Ktulu remained silent as she listened to the healer speak of wishing she had something to do. Wasn't there plenty to do? She could begin setting up regular health checks for the members to make sure they stayed as healthy as possible. Or she could begin gathering herbs and storing them away. Not all herbs died in the winter, right? She wished she knew the answer to that question, but the Earth God had only given her the gift of a son, not the gift of knowledge. "I'm sure there is plenty you can do." She said instead. "You could begin gathering herbs for healing." She suggested, though she wouldn't tell the mare what to do. Ophelia had put her in charge of the medics. If she really wanted to find something to do to help them all then she would.

At the question of who oher companion was, Ktulu turned her head enough to peek at him with one blood red eye. "His name is Eytan." There was a hint of a smile on her face, which softened her features, but it was gone quickly. "If he were not sleeping now he would be attacking your tail." She shifted into a more comfortable position. "He is quite the busybody."

A flicker of a frown crossed the black mare's face, or maybe Tor was imangining it, yet the words were spoken without any bad intent. Maybe you could begin stocking up winter stores. "Yes, I could. In fact, I should be doing that... and starting up health checks for the Grey... and find out whose in the Grey..." Tor gave a quiet sigh. "On second thought, there is rather quite a bit to do. I should start that right away, or rather when the morning comes."

A wisp of a smile crossed Ktulu's face as she turned to watch the bear cub. Eytan was a good name for a little grizzly. "Eytan is a lovely name. I better find somewhere to sleep for the night. Good dreams to you, Ktulu." Tor slipped off into the night after the farewells, and even her white coat quickly faded into the black velvet wrapping the world.
